• Sorting in Matlab

  Hi, I would like to sort elements in a comma-separated list. The elements in the list are structs and I would like the list to be sorted according to one of the fields in the struct. For example, given the following code: L = {struct('obs', [1 2 3 4], 'n', 4), struct('obs', [6 7 5 3], 'n', 2)}; I would want to have a way to sort L by the field 'n'. Matlab's sort function only works on matrices or arrays and on lists of strings (not even lists of numbers). Any ideas on how that may be achieved? Thanks, Micha

Is the use of ifstream here efficient? Can I do better? I'm reading about mmap() implementations but I'm not understanding them 100%. The input file is simply text strings with *nix line terminations.

  Is there a way to convert a Json Object to a Multidimensional C# Array? I know it might be impractical but I can't be bothered to write classes and then deserialize the strings into them. List<string> ohyeah = (List<string>)JsonConvert.DeserializeObject(g.CommToken); That returns an Invalid Cast exception!   Hello Im building a new version of an iPhone application and Im wondering if I should review how my app communicates with the server. My iPhone client sends and receives XML over HTTP requests. To send the information I use ASIHTTPRequest framework. I "manually" build the XML request by appending strings. To parse the response Im using a NSXMLParser. My question is if I have better options to A) Create an XML string from a memory object. B) Create a memory object from the XML string. Is there anything like JAXB to marshal XML into object?   I want to use position (returned from a gridview for e.g.) or a similar numeric integer to do various things, e.g. create a sprite, or in any command that wants something other than a number, e.g. I want to use something like: sprites.add(createSprite(R.drawable.image(position)); , where createSprite creates a sprite using the image supplied, instead of: if (position == 1) {sprites.add(createSprite(R.drawable.image1);} if (position == 2) {sprites.add(createSprite(R.drawable.image2);} ...etc There is an easy solution for strings: Most efficient method to use position to open a .java but what about for situations like this one?

• PowerShell: How to add XmlElement to a non-root element

  I'm having trouble adding an XmlElement to a non-root element in PowerShell. Basically, given this xml: <clubs> <club name="boca" position="1"> <field>bombonera</field> <field>bombonerita</field> </club> <club name="racing" position="19"> <field>cilindro</field> </club> </clubs> I create an element, $new = $clubs.CreateElement("Barracas") When I try to add this element to a non-root node i.e. $clubs.clubs.club += $new I get Cannot set "club" because only strings can be used as values to set XmlNode properties. What am I missing? Thanks in advance.

  I've noticed that some sites (including http://jobs.stackoverflow.com) have query strings that look like this: http://somewebapp.example/?123 as compared to: http://somewebapp.example/123 or http://somewebapp.example/id/123 What are the reasons that developers choose to implement their web apps' URLs using the first example instead of the second and third examples? And as a bonus, how would one implement the first example in PHP, given that 123 is the primary key of some row in a database table? (I just need to know how to retrieve 123 from the URL; I already know how to query the database for a primary key of 123.)

• Reading bytes from JavaScript string

  I have a string containing binary data in JS. Now I want to read, for example, an integer from it. So I get the first 4 characters, use charCodeAt, do some shifting etc. to get an integer. Problem is that strings in JS are UTF-16 (instead of ASCII) and charCodeAt often returns values higher than 256. The Mozilla reference states that "The first 128 Unicode code points are a direct match of the ASCII character encoding." (what about ASCII values 128?) How can I convert the result of charCodeAt to an ASCII value? Or is there a better way to convert a string of four characters to a 4 byte integer?

  We are planning to capture a user's height and weight and am looking for ideas on representing them in sql. I have the following questions in mind weight can be expressed in kilograms and grams and height in meters and centimeters, so should I capture them as a BigDecimal with an appropriate precision and scale or capture them as vanilla strings and do the manipulation in the user interface. Note: I am planning to capture the kilograms and grams separately in the user interface. should the metric of measurement be part of the sql (i.e. the end user might want to view this information in pounds, inches according to his preference) OR Should I just support kilograms / meters in the database and do the conversion while showing this in the user interface

  I want to emit dynamic error messages like all interpreters do nowadays, for example: Name error: Undefined variable would be constant, however what I want to reach is: Name error: Undefined variable 'X', in line 1 Okay. The line number was really no problem: Every error message must have a line number, so I added it to the error emitter function: Error( ErrType type, string msg, int line ); So where is my problem? How do I get the 'X' into Undefined variable *? I can't use sprintf as it doesn't support strings yet I use them everywhere I can't simply use cout and connect everything as I want error messages to be supressable I'd like to get everything into one function like above, Error() How do I put together dynamic error messages? For example: Error( Name, sprintf("Undefined variable %s", myVariableName ), lineNum ); (But myVariableName is a string and sprintf will mess things up)

  I'm trying to understand an old classic Mac application's entry point. I've disassembled the first CODE resource (not CODE#0, which is the jump table). The code refers to some variables off the stack: a word at 0004(A7), an array of long words of starting at 000C(A7) whose length is the value at 0004(A7), and a final long word beyond that array that seems to be a pointer to a character string. The array of long words looks like strings at first glance, so it looks superficially like we're dealing with an (int argc, char ** argv) situation, except the "argv" array is inline in the stack frame. What should a program be expecting on its stack / registers when it first gets called by the Mac OS?

However, at runtime in either a window app or console, you'll get true: object t1 = "a"; object t2 = "a"; MessageBox.Show((t1 == t2).ToString()); // outputs true The runtime behavior is consistent with the definition for the == operator and strings.   Hi, I work on apllication which allows plugins to access different set of functionality, every plugin provides "initialization string" which sets level of access to different features. Developers send me this strings, and I encrypt them using my 1024 bit RSA private key and send encoded data back. When started, my application decodes encoded data(encoded initialisation string) using built-in public key and if "decoded data != initialization string" it fails to start. So, is it possible to use a database of "initialization string" = "encoded initialization string"(extracted from other plugins) to crack my private key, or make it possible to bruteforce it in reasonable time?

  I need little help with transferring data from variables, arrays, lists to my SQL Server. Im not bad in SQL, but im not familiar with DataSet, DataTable objects. My data is now stored in list of strings (List). Every string in that list looks similar to this: QWERTY,19920604,0.91,0.35,0.34,0.35,343840 There are about 900000 rows like this. Target datatypes in SQL Server: BIGINT (primary key, im not inserting it, its identity(1,1)) VARCHAR(10), DATE, DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), DECIMAL(10,2), INT How to convert that data to SQL Server data types? How to insert that data into SQL Server? Also i need some progress bar updates between inserts. I could do this using old-fashion SQL command, but i have learn more modern way :)

• What's the best way to replace the first letter of a string in Java?

  I'm trying to convert the first letter of a string to lowercase. I know there's a capitalize method, but I want to accomplish the opposite. This is the code I used: value.substring(0,1).toLowerCase() + value.substring(1) Effective, but feels a bit manual. Are there any other ways to do it? Any better ways? Any Java string functions that do it for you? I was thinking of using something like a replace function, but Java's replace doesn't accept an index as a parameter. You have to pass the actual character/substring. Another way I can think of doing it is something like: value.replaceFirst(value.charAt(0), value.charAt(0).toLowerCase()) Except that replaceFirst expects 2 strings, so the value.charAt(0)s would probably need to be replaced with value.substring(0,1)s. Is this any better? Does it matter? Is there any standard way to do this?

• Using Custom Generic Collection faster with objects than List

  I'm iterating through a List<> to find a matching element. The problem is that object has only 2 significant values, Name and Link (both strings), but has some other values which I don't want to compare. I'm thinking about using something like HashSet (which is exactly what I'm searching for -- fast) from .NET 3.5 but target framework has to be 2.0. There is something called Power Collections here: http://powercollections.codeplex.com/, should I use that? But maybe there is other way? If not, can you suggest me a suitable custom collection?

• convert int into string with certain length of char

  If the title wasn't clear, ill try to explain it well here. I have a bunch of integers, ranging from 1 to 999, and i need to convert these into strings, but when i do that, i need them to be 3 characters long. so for instance, if i had: int i1 = 45; then when i turned that into a string, i'd need this: "045" or similarly, if i had an int of 8 then that would have to turn into "008", and if anything had 3 places, such as 143, then it would just be outputted as 143. is this easily possible? Thanks for responses in advance. :)

  Hey All, Okay, so I have an iphone app that presents the user with a UIWebview of an html page with a form I created. The form has standard stuff like a message box and dropdown boxes. Once the user fills out the form and clicks submit, it saves the information as nsstrings in my program. Okay, no problem there. That all works fine. However, I also wanna be able to edit this form as well. Once I save all this information the user selected in the form (as strings), is there a way to put it back into an html form using an uiwebview so a user of the app can edit the info later on?? I apologize in advance if I didn't give enough info.

How do I generate these kinds of system-specific error strings for HRESULTs?

• Generate MySQL data dump in SQL from PHP

  I'm writing a PHP script to generate SQL dumps from my database for version control purposes. It already dumps the data structure by means of running the appropriate SHOW CREATE .... query. Now I want to dump data itself but I'm unsure about the best method. My requirements are: I need a record per row Rows must be sorted by primary key SQL must be valid and exact no matter the data type (integers, strings, binary data...) Dumps should be identical when data has not changed I can detect and run mysqldump as external command but that adds an extra system requirement and I need to parse the output in order to remove headers and footers with dump information I don't need (such as server version or dump date). I'd love to keep my script as simple as I can so it can be hold in an standalone file. What are my alternatives?
