  • PHP scripts owned by www-data

    I am always running php scripts on a dedicated server as user "webroot". It would be easier for coding and administration if the scripts were owned by www-data, the apache2 user. Also feels more simple and clean. There is no ftp on this box and there are no other users or sites. Why not have the php scripts owned by www-data? If there is anything against it, what is the worst that can happen?

To detect biral infection it is desired that internet access is limited. Network access to the host is desired, but access to the internet should be limited to a select few sites. The added overhead of network access should be small when the guest vbox is running, 0 when it is not.

  • How do I create a virtual directory in IIS?

    I have newly installed machine on which i have installed the IIS. On each of the sites I am installing requests are not reaching the site pages. However, if I send a request with the path of a HTML/image file explicitly the resource is accessible. Also, I do not get the "Create Virtual Directory" option in IIS. I only have the option to create a web site. What went wrong?

I have the updater and set the the ipv4 to have the IP of Open DNS 208.67.222.222. But still won't work. Do you know of any alternatives.

  • How to deal with 100's or 1000's of virtual hosts

    I am curious to know how services such as heroku manage 1000's of virtual hosts - ie if you create a web site/app, and put it up on these services, you get your own virtual host name - foo.heroku.com etc (the same applies to many other sites that have vanity URLs). I know with various web servers and proxies you can configure as many virtual hosts as you want - but there must be some upper limit to this ? Do they programmatically add virtual hosts - perhaps spreading the load? Or are there other solutions.

  • Tor in virtual machine - 502 bad gateway

    I'm trying to run Tor in virtual machine. It used to work, but now when I try to access sites I get "502 bad gateway" error from Privoxy instead of requested site. I tried fixing time to correct one with date command but I still get 502 error. I use Virtualbox, Linux guest, and Tor+Privoxy setup.

Now all my sites have spurious errors and execution time outs. Originally updated with VC9 build but then realised error and updated with VC6 (with same problem).   • Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 update breaks SSL

    Summary After updating from 10.7.1 to 10.7.2, neither Safari nor Google Chrome can load GMail. Spinning Beachballs all around. The problem isn't GMail; Firefox loads GMail just fine. The problem isn't limited to Safari or Google Chrome; Other applications also have trouble with SSL: Gilgamesh and Safari. Any program that uses WebKit (Google Chrome, Safari) or a Cocoa library (Gilgamesh) to access the Internet has trouble loading secure sites. The various forums online suggest a handful of fixes, none of which work. Analysis Fix #1: Open Keychain Access.app and delete the Unknown certificate. The 10.7.2 update also prevents Keychain Access from loading. The Keychain program itself Spinning Beachballs. Fix #2: Delete ~/Library/Keychains/login.keychain and /Library/Keychains/System.keychain. This temporarily resolves the issue, and lets you load secure sites, but a minute or two after rebooting or hibernating somehow magically undoes the fix, so you have to delete these files over and over. Fix #3: Delete ~/Library/Application\ Support/Mob* and /Library/Application\ Support/Mob*. There is a rumor that the new MobileMe/iCloud service ubd is causing the issue. This fix does not resolve the issue. Fix #4: Open Keychain Access, open the Preferences, and disable OCSP and CRL. This fix does not resolve the issue. Fix #5: Use the 10.7.0 - 10.7.2 combo installer, rather than the 10.7.1 - 10.7.2 installer. When I run the combo installer, it stays forever at the "Validating Packages..." screen. The combo installer itself is bugged to He||. I force-quit the installer, ran "sudo killall installd" to force-quit the background installer process, and reran the combo installer. Same problem: it stalls at "Validing Packages..." Recap The only fix that works is deleting the keychains, but you have to do this every time you reboot or wake from hibernate. There is some evidence that ubd continually corrupts the keychain files, but the suggested ubd fix of deleting ~/Library/Application\ Support/Mob* and /Library/Application\ Support/Mob* does not resolve this issue. Evidently, something is corrupting the keychain over and over and over. Also posted on the Apple Support Communities.

  • Can't install any drivers at all on Windows 8. Error 0x000003F9

    I suddenly can't install any drivers at all on my Windows 8 Pro x64 install. It doesn't matter what kind of driver it is, nothing will install. Everything ends with error 0x000003F9: The system has attempted to load or restore a file into the registry, but the specified file is not in a registry file format. When Windows Update tries to install a driver, it just gives error code 800703F9 and says that "Windows Update ran into a problem." I've already done a scan of system files with sfc, tried another user account, done a chkdsk, and a few more things, but nothing works. The problem started when I tried to install drivers for my printer earlier today and suddenly started getting messages saying that "Windows Modules Installer has stopped working." I decided to restart and was being greeted with the recovery boot options. I shut the computer down, but when I booted it back up the same thing happened, so I did a repair your pc, and was able to boot into the OS properly. Then I rebooted into my external drive and did a chkdsk on the Windows 8 install that started acting funny. When I booted back into Windows 8, I wasn't able to install any drivers. They all keep coming up with the same error. And I can't seem to find anything at all on this issue. Any help would be much appreciated.   • Free web hosting that allows JavaScript and CSS

    I was considering using Google Sites to host some webpages with HTML5 and JavaScript experiments I'm trying out, but it seems that they don't allow JavaScript. Does anybody have any good suggestions for a free web hosting service where I can upload simple HTML/CSS & JavaScript experiments? I don't have large bandwidth needs, nor do I need a WYSIWYG editor. Ideally I'd like to just upload the HTML, CSS, and JS files directly.
