• Alternative to VLC player [closed]

  I've been using VLC player but since the latest version (2.0.1) it's rendering all the Hebrew subtitles as question marks. I'm looking for a good free alternative that runs on Windows OS. I prefer a player with a huge dashboard and zillion preferences where all the possible options are customizable. Once ago I used MV2 player and loved that type of player that supports all the possible tweaks etc. etc.

  I have some videos from a few years ago,with various formats, such as avi, mpg, wmv, rm, rmvb, .... Their sizes are huge(more than 500 MB, and sometimes 1GB). Given there may likely be some advance in data compression, I would like to know which file formats and compression methods are recommended these days, by the standard that without losing obvious data, while achieving big size reduction. How can I perform the file format conversion and data compression in Ubuntu 12.04? Command line and batch ways would be the most convenient, although GUI ways are also appreciated. • iPad connection to external monitor

  Apple have been relatively restrictive in the way in which they have enabled the iPad to be connected to an external display i.e. only certain things like videos and images can be displayed in this way (via a converting lead). Does anyone know of a way to get around this? I.e. display any content on the iPad on an external display - not just the apps/content that Apple has designated? For example, I want to connect my iPad to an external monitor and create documents, viewing them on the monitor not the iPad display? Thanks in advance for any help.

  I have some instructional videos I am getting ready to release on DVD and I want to know what is the quickest and most cost effective way to produce these in bulk? I am open to both customized PC based software/hardware solutions as well as dedicated hardware appliances which perform the same function. All options considered seriously. I don't have a problem building a system for this purpose. If I build something I would prefer it have the ability to make multiple copies at once. I figure I will need to make about 300 copies initially.

• Linux : How to convert media files to DVD format and burn?

  I have a load of media files on my PC, mostly AVI/MKV and some mpegs. On windows, I would use ConvertXToDVD to convert these to DVD format, and to burn to disc. That application also lets you save a bit of space on the DVD to put the original file in its AVI format on as well. How can I do this on linux? What are the alternatives to this Windows application? I could try to run ConvertXtoDVD under wine but I would prefer to find a native linux solution Thanks in advance!

  Is there a way (a google search, maybe?) to list/find all Youtube videos embedded under a single domain? There used to be (if memory servers) an option on youtube, to find all videos from a single site (they were referencing them as "blogs"), but was available for short period of time and it totally disappeared. I was experimenting with a couple google searches, but to no avail, like this one: site:theverge.com intext:"youtube.com/embed" Even if it worked, it wouldn't provide elegant "thumbnailed" results.   I have taken 30,000 still images that I want to combine into a timelapse movie. I have tried QuickTime Pro, TimeLapse 3, and Windows Movie Maker, but with such a huge amount of images, each of the programs fail (I tried SUPER ©, but couldn't get it to work either...?). It seems that all of these programs crash after a few thousand pictures. The images I have are all in .JPG format, at a resolution of 1280x800, and I'm looking for a program that can put these images into a timelapse movie in some kind of lossless format (raw/uncompressed AVI would be fine) for further editing. Does anyone have any ideas, or has anyone tried anything like this with a similar number of pictures?

  Hi All, I have a friend that hosts his website on IIS and Windows Server 2003 R2 32-bit. He has .WMV files and .MPG and others and some of these are 30 mb in size! He wonders why users complain the site is slow! So my question is how can we reduce the size of these movies? What software? What settings for bit-rate, etc? Is there free software? I can use either a Mac or a PC. Thoughts are appreciated.

• Ubuntu 11.04 fresh install - "Input signal out of range" or "Mode not supported..."

  I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 using a CD .iso. Installation went fine. Upon completion I rebooted and after a second or two I got a black screen with the message "Input signal out of range". And there it sits... Read a few things about how this could be related to screen resolution, refresh rate, etc. For the heck of it I tried a different monitor. The result is the same but the message provides some clues - "Mode not supported - H:92.7kHz, V:58.3Hz" (the latter is Hz; not kHz). So my thought is that I should probably be able to use the 11.04 install disc to "Try out Ubuntu", find and edit some file that was created by the install with the correct values. Problem is, I am not too sure what I am supposed to edit. Looked at the xorg.conf file but this is so minimal at this point I am not sure it is where I want to go. By the way, the monitor is an I-Inc ix191a. Anyone have any ideas on how to get around this?

  Is there any way at all that I can set up VLC on a server PC in such a way that I can access a list of all my videos from another PC, and pick one to be streamed on demand? I've been pointed at this streaming guide (pdf), but it's pretty useless. For a start, most of the menus in those screenshots don't match the actual current version VLC, and then it sort of assumes you already know what you're doing. So far I managed to figure out how to stream a single file, which I must choose before watching on the server PC - pretty useless if you ask me! The impenetrable "UI" doesn't help either... (P.S. The reason I'm going for streaming rather than the very simple to set up network drive is described in this question)

• How can I further improve the quality of my home videos?

  So now that I have found out how to deinterlace my videos, I am wondering if there is other software out there that can further help improve the quality of my videos. Some other problems I have noticed is when you move the camera side to side very quickly you can notice tearing in the the picture. That is the top half of the frame doesn't line up with the bottom half, it appears that the bottom half is shifted to the right or left depending on which way the camera is moving. Shaky camera hand is also a problem in some videos. I don't expect any software to be able to correct these problems 100%, especially the shaky hand. I know that using a tripod or something of the sorts is the best way to prevent the shakes, but for preexsiting videos what are the best solutions I can use?

• Dowload size of Streaming Videos

  I would like to know that if a website advertises a streaming download as say 100MB, would my download to my computer be 100MB ? Would there be streaming control packets that a service provider would charge for over and above the 100MB content ? Assume the latest RealPlayer viewer. The rub for me is that I have downloaded MIT lectures and according to my file manager the file sizes have matched up to the download sizes on YouTube. However my ISP seems to think that the streams were larger and charged me for more than the file size of the download. I am left wondering where the data came from.

• Can I get some advice on graphics cards please?

  I know that Steam for linux is on the way and have been seen a lot of games appearing in the Ubuntu Software Centre of late but my system lacks a decent graphics card and was hoping I could get some recommendations. The desktop is a Packard Bell Imedia S1800 (or Imedia D3526 UK) with the following specs; Memory: 3.8 GiB Processor: Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5800 @ 3.20GHz × 2 The system lists the graphics as 'unknown', though I think its just an integrated Intel card From what I can see there is a free PCI-E x16 slot. • PC connected to TV via VGA & audio in, plays Youtube videos ok but lags when full screen

  I managed to connect my PC running Windows XP SP3 to my LCD TV with VGA and audio in for the sound. Everything seems ok, there is no lag with the mouse or when watching videos on Youtube, iPlayer, etc. until I put the videos in full screen mode. The videos appear to lag slightly. What possible solutions are there to fix this? Thanks.

  I have a question that you can hopefully answer me. I am trying to write a ffmpeg script that transcodes my clips in XDCAM HD 422 1080p24, and it works fine as long as the original file has 24 fps, but is there a way that I can set an option which says "even if the original file has 25 fps I will transcode it in 24 fps". I have tried it, like I said it works fine as long as the original clip has 24 frames, but as soon as the original clip has another framerate, he can not convert it to 24 frames. I have tried using -r 24 which normally settles the framerate, but here it doesn't work. I am using the -vtag xd5c
