Now users could allegedly download a much smaller installer, and only install the client tools without having to install an instance of SQL Server Express. While the latter is true, the former remains a pipe dream.   Spent the weekend helping out several non-profits doing what we like to do best...  Designing, developing and making people very happy with their new websites, systems, applications and features.  Form what I saw at this GiveCamp about 75 percent of the non-profits needed updated or new websites supporting CMS features and the ability for staff members to update the content on their websites.... Some cool apps were designed and developed..... A centralized system for distribution of daily schedules and task assistance to autistic clients was a show stopper with an awesome central management interface, IPhone and in the future windows phone support for tactile, auditory and visual cues. SharePoint was upgraded and forms were automated for a volunteer fire company that desperately needed some automation to help the fireman do their primary job. Many cool sites for non-profits that had ether an outdated or non existent web presence.

  Just very recently I encountered an issue in deploying a custom SSIS component assembly which turns out to be a relative "no-brainer" error if only the clues were more straightforward. Basically after deploying the assembly I could not find my component listed in the "SSIS Data Flow Items" tab list.It turns out that the assembly containing the component just had missing or referenced the incorrect assemblies.I have outlined the steps I took that guided me on the right direction on this blog post of mine : adding custom SSIS transformation to visual studio toolbox fails

• Visual Studio 2010 Find and Replace With Regular Expressions

  Here is a quick notes about using regular expressions in the VS2010 Find Replace dialog.  1.  To create a backreference, use curly braces (“{“ and “}” ) instead of regular parentheses. 2.  To use the captured backreference, use \1\2 etc, where \1 is the first captured value, \2 is the second captured value, etc. Example: I want to find*: info.setFieldValue(param1, param2); and replace it with: SetFieldValue(info, param1, param2); To do this, I can use the following find/replace values: Find what: {[a-zA-Z0-9]+}.setFieldValue\({[a-zA-Z0-9., ]+}\); Replace with: SetFieldValue(\1, \2); Use Regular Expressions is checked, of course. *If you’re wondering why I’d want to do this – because I don’t have control over the setFieldValue function – its in a third party library that doesn’t behave in a very friendly manner. • Installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1 or Windows Phone tools in your VM (danger!)

  If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you probably know that I tend to develop stuff in a Parallels VM on a Mac. It's how I roll. I like VM's because I can trash them and do really stupid things with beta software. That said, there is a pain point that doesn't seem that well documented when it comes to installing stuff in this scenario.The WP7 tools, and SP1 for Visual Studio 2010 (perhaps only if you already have the WP7 tools installed, I'm not sure), do something strange on install. As if it weren't already a long and slow installation, for reasons I don't understand, the installer fires up an instance of Windows Phone Emulator. As you may already know, the emulator doesn't run in a VM, because it is itself a VM, apparently. What it will do is fire up your CPU, make your comprooder hot and make the fans blow harder.I found this out accidentally, as I started the (slow) phone tool installation once, and walked away. An hour and a half later, I came back to find it hadn't finished. But it was hot and the CPU was pegged, so I fired up the task manager to find XDE.exe, the phone emulator, cranking away. I had to kill it several times, and eventually the install finished. It fired up just once in the SP1 install, but it still had the same hanging effect.I can't for the life of me figure out why it does this. In a VM, I can connect the phone to it and use that, so I don't need the emulator. But this install, firing up the emulator, will make it choke until you kill the XDE.exe process. Watch out!

  Today , I try to write a Silverlight app that talks to SharePoint 2010 using the REST API.However after deploy the silverlight app and run the code , I got the following error.In order to fix this I need to make the target framework of your caller application to 4.0,in this case I need to use Silverlight 4.0 instead 3.0.After I have done that and redeploy the solution to the SharePoint.It works like a charm.   Exceptions details: System.Data.Services.Client.DataServiceQueryException: An error occurred while processing this request. Request version ’1.0′ is too low for the response. The lowest supported version is ’2.0′. However , if you got the error like this: Could not load type ‘System.Data.Services.Providers.IDataServiceUpdateProvider’ from assembly ‘System.Data.Services, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089′,then you need to install ADO.NET Data Services Update for .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 ,you can download here (for windowns 7 and server 2008 r2 ) or here (for windows vista of server 2008).

• Workflow of sharing code for small teams

  Problem is, we have developed a small CMS, that is different per implementation (currently). Of course development of this is never complete. Sometimes, we are working on more than one project that implements it (by copying-pasting the code files of the CMS to each project), and we add a new feature that we want to share on other projects as well (these can be small ones too, ie a custom ajax JSON controller - we use MVC) What we want to do is quickly and uniformly share the code with all other projects, via a version control system (or something similar), and generally organize the workflow as we know this isn't a very good workflow that we have. What would you suggest? Also, at the momment, the software we use is Visual Studio 2010, so we are strongly considering TFS, but even if we get it we still don't know the ideal workflow, or even if TFS supports what we want to do. Edit: Also note, we have specific implementations that have modifications over the CMS base that we want to KEEP only in the project area. (ie: a specific feature that we DONT want to share with the base CMS code)

• Visual Studio Express 2012 debug mode doesn't work

  I have a project in Visual Studio that I have been working on for a while, and I have used the debugger extensively. Recently I changed some settings and I have lost the ability to stop the program and step through code. I can't figure out what I had changed that might have affected this. If I put a breakpoint in my code and try to have the program stop there, it doesn't. The break point shows up white with a red outline. If I hover the mouse over it, it says "The breakpoint will not currently be hit. No executable code of the debugger's target code type is associated with this line. Possible causes include: conditional compilation, compiler optimizations, or the target architecture of this line is not supported by the current debugger code type." I know for a fact that the program executes the code where the breakpoint is because I put the breakpoint in the beginning of the InitializeComponent method. The program displays the window fine, but does not stop at the breakpoint. Yes, I am running in debug mode. It seems as though there is a disconnect between the compiled code and the source code displayed. Does anyone know what that would be, or know which compiler settings I should check to re-enable debugging? • How to avoid manual editing of manifest file

  My application uses isolated activeX (outer), that depends on another activeX (inner), both are using registration-free-com. The generated manifest file contains only the information for the outer activeX. (probably because vs cannot know that the outer activeX is using inner activeX ) When I re-build my project, I always need to manually add the information for the inner activeX to the manifest file, otherwise the application only shows the outer, without the inner. Is there a way to inform visual studio (2008) that I do not want it to re-generate the manifest file for each build? Will I have such option if I upgrade to VS2010 ? Thanks, Atara

• Is it possible to control the destination folder when checking out a project from VSS 2005?

  We are currently using VSS 2005 for source control - and please let me start by saying, I've read a lot of posts on Stackoverflow and I realize VSS is the devil. That being said... its what we have to work with now and I have a question about the checkout process. We have the code organized in a certain hierarchy on the vss server, but when we do a checkout we don't need that same hierarchy on our machines. Is there a way to control how visual studio 2008 and vss 2005 create the checkout destination folder so that I don't end up with the code being 9 folders deep on MY machine?

  Stack Overflow has covered favorite short-cuts and add-ins, optimizations and preferences -- great topics all. If this one has been covered, I can't find it -- so thanks in advance for the link. What are your favorite Visual Studio keyboard remappings? Mine are motivated by the fact that I'm a touch-typist. Mouse, function keys, arrow keys, Home, End -- bleh. These are commands I do all day every day, so I've remapped them to sequences I can execute without moving my hands from the home row. The command that is remapped in Tools = Customize = [Keyboard] is shown in parentheses. I'm 100% positive that there are better remappings than these, so please post yours! VS will display a list of all the open windows. You can select from the list by typing the file name; the matching file will be selected as you type. • Controlling CodeModel's code output formatting: putting lines between namespace declarations

  I'm making some experiments with Visual Studio's CodeModel. I tried creating a file with two namespaces in there through VS's Code Model: CodeModel codeModel = projItem.ContainingProject.CodeModel; codeModel.AddNamespace("Namespaces.FirstNamespace", "namespacestest.cs"); codeModel.AddNamespace("Namespaces.SecondNamespace", "namespacestest.cs"); the output of such code is: //file namespacestest.cs namespace Namespaces.FirstNamespace { } namespace Namespaces.SecondNamespace { } Which is almost what I'm looking for. The only catch here is that I'd like to control the spacing: having at least one line between the first and the second namespace. Does by chance anyone know of a way of achieving this? This is what I want: //file namespacestest.cs namespace Namespaces.FirstNamespace { } namespace Namespaces.SecondNamespace { } Thanks

• Visual Studio 2008 & Perforce. Where is my .vspscc files?

  Hi, I use Visual Studio 2008 and Perforce. When I bind my project to perforce(File - Source Control - Change Source Control - Bind), Visual Studio complain like "~.vspscc File is not under source control". Should I create that file for myself, or is that file created by Visual Studio? If it is created by Visual Studio, why does it complain about it? Thanks in advance.
