    I have Linux server running about 6 game servers. I have 3 GB total of RAM but I use only about 500 MB. Is there a way to cache one of my game servers (all the files - even not actually used maps etc. - about 1,5 GB) to RAM?     Can I go ahead and install a Windows Home Server using an MSDN iso (en_windows_home_server_installation_disc_x86_dvd_x14-24276.iso), and activate it later when my OEM box arrives (OEM sku as bought from Amazon, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Microsoft-OEM-Home-Server-WIN32/dp/B001E5Q8CO/) , or will I have to wait and use the media that ships with the license? I know that you can not do his with the trial, but the MSDN iso is listed as "retail". I do not wish to use the MSDN activation key for this install.

  • On Windows how can I prevent login until a software package has been installed?

    I have an MSI which is configured for machine level installation because it is a device driver. I can deploy it via Active Directory and Group Policy just fine. However on a newly booted machine a user can login before the installation has a chance to complete and I get an warning in the event log saying it couldn't complete and will be tried at next reboot. How can I make the login screen wait for the installation to be completed?

  • long access times and errors in iis application

    I am having an issue with an IIS application (details of environment at the end of the message). The web site works great most of the time and I cannot reproduce any error in our test system. On the live system however with on averare of 5-15 requests per second I have a problem with that some requests (about 0.05%) will take over 300 seconds to complete. The other requests complete withing 5-10 seconds. It seem like if all the errornous requests end up with a Timer_EntityBody error in the error log. I have never seen this as an end user but I guess that they will receive some kind of error message. I am trying to find out what can be causing this errornous behaviour. Any ideas are welcome. I have read something about that there can be an MTU issue if ICMP and MTU protocols are blocked in the firewall. Does that sound reasonable? I have also read about updating to IIS 7 should do the trick. Does it sound reasonable? I think that the problem has another cause but I have no idea of what. I have tried running hte perormance monitor, monitoring for database locks and active transaction counts. I can see some of these in the perfmon log for the MSSQL server (another machine) for example: Active transactions is sometimes peaking and sometimes for long periods Lock waits per seconds is sometimes peaking Transactions per second is sometimes peaking Page IO Latch wait is sometimes peaking Lock wait time (ms) is sometimes peaking But I cannot see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log. On the IIS server machine I can also see with perfmon that some values peak a few times during a day: Request execution time Avg disk queue length I can neither see that any of these correlate to the errors in the IIS error log.   • kill -9 doesn't work

    I have a server with 3 oracle instances on it, and the file system is nfs with netapp. After shutdown the databases, one process for each database doesn't quit for a long time. Each kill -i doesn't work. I tried to truss, pfile it, the command through error. And iostat shows there are lots of IO to the netapp server. So someone said the process was busy writing data to remote netapp server, and before the write complete, it won't quit. So what need to be done was just wait until all the IO was done. After wait for longer time (about 1.5 hours), the processes exit. So my question is: how can a process ignore the kill signal? As far as I know, if we kill -9, it will stop immediately. Do you encounter such situation kill -i doesn't kill the process right away?     I have four different Macs that I use from time to time, and on each of them I notice a constant: adding more items to AppleScript Editor's Library window slows performance of mundane operations (opening a dictionary, switching between Library window and editor window, scrolling in the Library window, etc). In Leopard, I noticed little to no latency in opening a dictionary in Script Editor, but Snow Leopard's AppleScript Editor kills my productivity by making me wait on it with most UI interactions with the Library window.

  • OSX's built-in VNC server disconnects me randomly, but frequently

    I've been using OSX's VNC service to connect remotely from a Windows XP box, via TightVNC. Everything seems to work normally, except that frequently - anywhere from ten seconds to ten minutes - the connection locks up entirely, without any sort of error message. The only solution is to reconnect and wait for it to lock up again. How can this be fixed permanently?

    I am tired of watching fsck check my filesystem when my eeepc 901 shuts down abruptly due to a crash. I know that with a journaling filesystem, I won't have to wait for a check. However, I am well aware of the poor I/O performance of the SSD, so I can imagine using a journaling filesystem being even more frustrating, since there will be constant writes to the journal? I will buy a new laptop without such a crummy ssd someday but, is there anything I can do now, on the software side of things?

This is working fine with three of the user accounts I have.   • Update to recent stable php in Ubuntu 12.04

    We run an Ubuntu 12.04 server where php 5.3.10 is installed by default. I thought Ubuntu did only apply bugfixes in their updates, so micros like 5.3.x should pass through. Apparently, our version isn't updated, but we are stuck with a critical bug in php which is solved in 5.3.15. Should I wait longer for this release to bubble up? Or are there safe repositories to use for Ubuntu to continuously update php and php related packages?

    I've installed Ubuntu server 10.04 and then installed Gnome desktop on top of it, because I am new to Linux and its command line, I need the GUI desktop to help me get around. However, the problem I got is that the server doesn't boot into the GUI desktop when powered on. It's booting into a shell like this: Gave up waiting for root device. Common problems: - Boot args (cat /proc/cmdline) - Check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enought?) - check root= (did the system wait for the right device?) - Missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev) ALERT! /dev/mapper/cecdata-root does not exist.   • Which is faster, copying everything at once or one thing at a time?

    I am transferring a bunch (20+) of large (1GB+) files to my external flash drive over USB 2.0. Is it quicker to just sling them all over at once (as in one at a time but not waiting for the previous transfer to finish) so that there are multiple transfers going on, or transfer one, wait for it to finish, transfer the next. The files are coming from a variety of locations so I can't do one single big transfer. Are there any other advantages to one way or the other that are worth considering?

The line breaks seem to have been introduced in the process of paasting into this form. Well spotted - I was using a PDF file name "ascii". I added a .pdf extension but still get the error. I suspect you're right that it's to do with admin rights. Here's more about the setup and what I'm trying to achieve. Win2pdf is a product for writing PDFs by works by simulating a Windows printer. You "print" the page, select win2pdf in the print dialog and it then asks for a file name. I have it installed on my pc (called Neil) and it works fine in this conventional way. My aim is to write an html page to a PDF file using win2pdf - but via ASP/vbscript/javascript rather than with manual intervention. The script for doing this was provided by win2PDF's tech support but when it did not work, that was the limit of their understanding. In the sample script the file ascii.asp just produces a table of ascii codes/characters. The URL given is on my own PC which has IIS set up to run scripts which it does fine. The error I get occurs on about the fourth line executed. I am logged in with full admin rights - I think! But I'm no expert. I hope this helps to give some more specific suggestions about how to check/fix the admin rights.

Reason I ask, I wish to change the A record. So this will eliminate the .htaccess file, and thus null and void the redirect. How long must I wait prior to the undertaking? Thank you.
