• Migrating Printers from XP to 7 (using USMT 4.0)

  I'm attempting to migrate a user from an XP machine to a 7 machine, using USMT 4.0 (User State Migration Tool, from Microsoft). For some reason the migration of printers isn't working, and none of the topics at Microsoft's TechNet are helping me out. They also mention a folder named DIManifests, which has to be present in the USMT directory. I've tried everything, but with no success. Can anyone please help me sort this one out? Apparently it's a bug, but there's gotta be some workaround. Thank you!

• Windows 7 - problems launching default application

  Just built up a new W7 PC. I've noticed some strange issues with launching default applications. I've got Visual Studio & SQL Server Management Studio set run as administrator when launched. If i double click a .sql file SSMS opens ok but the file itself does not get loaded. If I do the same with a .sln then I get nothing at all from Visual Studio. For the latter I presume the UAC prompt is hidden somewhere waiting for me to say it's ok to launch the app but i've no idea what's happening with SSMS. Is this a W7 bug or are there some settings somewhere that I can tweak to improve this behaviour?

• CentOS - Configuring Puppet to play nice with SELinux

  I am running into an issue every time I attempt to start the puppetmasterd service, for which I receive the following error message: root@service1 ~ # -> /etc/init.d/puppetmaster start Starting puppetmaster: Could not prepare for execution: Got 1 failure(s) while initializing: change from absent to directory failed: Could not set 'directory on ensure: Permission denied - /etc/puppet/ssl [FAILED] Apparently there was a known issue with this scenario as outlined in this bug report, however in the bug report it states the issue has been resolved in selinux-policy-3.9.16-29.fc15, but the latest CentOS default upstream version is 3.7.19-155.el6_3.4. So I am trying to figure out the best solution. I can either create a local security policy to allow puppetmasterd the access it needs, or keep researching and install a newer version of selinux-policy outside of the default upstream channel. Anyone have any recommendations? • Can installing URL Rewrite 2.0 on production IIS 7.5 have a negative impact?

  We have a Windows 2008 R2 server with IIS 7.5 and a lot of customer websites. Being no sys-admin but a developer, I hate to touch that wonderfully running system. However, I'd like to update the IIS plugin URL Rewrite to version 2.0 via Web Platform Installer. I do not want to do anything that might compromise the server, hence the question: can I expect it to work with at least a 99% chance? I did not find any bug reports or reviews on the web, so I'd like to hear an expert on that.

• Sendmail Alias for Nonlocal Email Account

  I admin a server which is running a number of web applications for a software dev team (source control, bug tracking, etc). The server has sendmail running solely as a transport to the departmental email server over which I have no control. We have someone who is still in the department but no longer on the dev team so I need to configure the transport agent to redirect all outgoing email (which would be coming from these applications) to the person that has taken their place. I added an entry in /etc/aliases like such: [email protected]: [email protected] But when I run /etc/init.d/sendmail newaliases I get the following error: /etc/mail/aliases: line 32: [email protected]... cannot alias non-local names So clearly I'm doing something I shouldn't. Is there a way to get aliases to work with non-local names or alternatively is their a way to accomplish my goal of redirecting outgoing mail for this user to another one? Technical Specs if the matter: Ubuntu 6.06 sendmail 8.13 (ubuntu provided package)

• IE9 development tools giving "Unable to attach to the process." error

  Notice: I have now rebuilt my machine to remove this bug, so I can no longer verify any answers. I recently installed Internet Explorer 9, and activated the development tools by pressing F12; I then clicked "script" and the "start debugging" button but I got the following error: Unable to attach to the process. Another debugger might be attached to the process. I get this message regardless of the site I am on (currently I'm on google.com). I have no other applications running, and have rebooted my machine. Can anyone suggest why this may be appearing?

• Meta refresh tag not working in (my) firefox?

  Code like on this page does not work in (my) Firefox 3.6 and also not in Fx4 (WinXPsp3) Works in IE8, Safari 5, Opera 11, Mozilla 1.7, Chrome 9 <meta http-equiv=refresh content="12; URL=meta2.htm"> <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="1; URL=http://fully_qualified_url.com/page2.html"> are completely ignored Not that I use such back-button killing things, but a LOT of sites do, possibly including my linux apache it seems when it wants to show a 503 error page... If I firebug or look at generated content, I do not see the refresh tag changed in any way so I am really curious what kind of plugin/addon could block me which is why I googled (in vain) for a known bug... In about:config I have accessibility.blockautorefresh; false so that is not it. I ran in safe mode and OH MY GOD, STACKEXCHANGE IS FULL OF ADS but no redirect

• Machine only responds to network requests from machines it is pinging

  I have two machines. WOPR: Ubuntu server edition 10.10 LTS 32 bit Adam Selene: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit / Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 LTS 64 bit I want to be able to SSH from Adam Selene to WOPR, so I connect them to the same network. Here's where things get weird. I cannot connect to WOPR in any way under normal circumstances. But, if WOPR is pinging Adam, then it starts responding to ping requests, HTTP gets, and SSH tunnels. I'm an amateur, and brand new to Ubuntu server, so I suspect there's a misconfiguration somewhere, but there's an off chance it's a bug in the OS. Does anyone know what might cause this behavior? • 504 Gateway Time-out after php fatal error

  I'm using nginx and php-fpm to develop a symfony2 based website, under ubuntu 12.10 (yes, I know I'm using a beta OS). Everything was working out fine until, due to an error on my code, I called an unexisting function, and got the following: Fatal error: Call to a member function (....) This isn't a problem (it's a bug in my code, easily fixable), but after this, no other page loads. My browser just keeps trying to load the page from the webserver, until nginx timeouts (after +- 30s, which should be some default timeout) and returns: 504 Gateway Time-out Restarting php-fpm solves the issue. Nginx logs show a timeout message, and nothing appears on php-fpm logs, even if I set them to debug level. I tried switching from fpm to fastcgi, and the same thing happens. I've looked around, but all similar error are related to big requests/file handling, which isn't the case. All the pages on my website load in a few seconds, even under development conditions (no caching, etc).

  Okay, I made a mistake and I'll be the first to admit I'm new at this setup. I built a bare bones kit, installed Ubuntu on it, and attempted to set up a source control server for a project some friend and I were going to work on. Unfortunately, I screwed up. I followed a dodgy tutorial from 2005 and when it didn't work, started mixing and matching trying to get to the source of my problem. So now I sit before you, a broken and miserable man. Desperate to escape this annoying echo of 'Unable to resolve host computer.repositoryname.com', I uninstalled apache and subversion. That did not fix it. Next I tried to edit my /etc/hosts, going so far as to remove the reference to '127.0.1.1 computername'. Still I'm plagued. I know I messed up, is there any way to track down this wayward bug?

• What could cause sudden crash of a MySQL 5.0.67 installation?

  I have an old Ubuntu 8.10 32-bit with MySQL 5.0.67. There's 5.7GB of data in it and it grows by about 100MB every day. About 3 days ago, the MySQL instance begin dying suddenly and quitely (no log entry) during the nightly mysqldump. What could be causing it? Upgrading MySQL is a long-term project for me, unless there happens to be a specific bug in 5.0.67 then I guess I'll just need to reprioritize. I'm hoping somebody might be familiar with this problem since this is a fairly popular version bundled with Ubuntu 8.10. Thanks

  My Windows 2008 R2 machine is joined to a domain. In the logon screen, if I type in "[email protected]:something" as the username, I can still logon properly, what's the meaning of ":something" appended at the end? I can even see the current user is displayed as "[email protected]:something" in the switch user screen. Is it a feature in Windows? Or is it just a bug? If it is a feature, what's the difference between logging in as "[email protected]" and logging in as "[email protected]:something"? Note that I tried different combinations like "mydomain\username:something" and "mydomain.com:something\username". None of them work except "[email protected]:something".

• How to use graphical line drawing characters with Midnight Commander on OS X under ssh?

  I discovered that when I do ssh to a machine using OS X 10.6 and use mc I do not see the graphical line drawing characters. This does not happen if I open terminal and start mc. I'm connecting using putty configured to use xterm-color, configuraton that works just fine if I do ssh to a linux machine. The mc from OS X is version 4.7.0 (installed using macports). What locale returns: LC_CTYPE="C" <== ssh LC_CTYPE="UTF-8" <== Terminal.app ssh: mc display bits shows: 7-bit ASCII (changing does not help, it defaults to the same value) Terminal.app: mc display bits shows: UTF-8 The environment shows TERM=xterm-color in both cases Terminal.app and ss but mc looks different. • Sometimes tabs in notepad++ won't make a new window when dragged out

  Long-time Linux user on a Windows 7 machine, using Notepad++ to edit multiple text files. Sometimes I can drag a tab out of the notepad++ window onto the desktop to get a new notepad++ window. This is a very nice feature. But sometimes when I try to drag a tab out, nothing happens. I don't see what is different about these tabs or the files they contain. It is repeatable; the same tab still won't make a new window. I'm not familiar enough with Windows and its strange ways to begin to guess what is going on, unless it's a bug. How can I make all tabs draggable-to-new-windowable, no exceptions?

• How to restore one contact from Address Book with Time Machine

  I want to restore one contact from my Address Book with Time Machine. To do so, I select the contact in Address Book. Then, I press the Time Machine icon in the dock. Then my address book is "taken into space". However, when I browse back in time (either pressing the arrow back, or selecting a time on the right), the contact details do not change. And I am sure the data has been changed between dates. Also, when I do press restore, it's still the new data, not the backup. Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong? I'm using OS X 10.6.3 in combination with a external USB drive on an iMac.

  BSOD constantly and the disk indicator is frozen. Error do not happen immediately, usually an hour after boot up. Here is the Minidump: Bug Check Code = 0x00000124 Caused By Driver = ntoskrnl.exe Caused By Address = ntoskrnl.exe+4b094c Crash Address = ntoskrnl.exe+4b094c Seems to be hardware problem, but I checked RAM, no error. I have two HDs installed, system is on SSD, data is on HDD. Checked SSD with the properties-tools-error-checking , no error. Re-installed several times, still happens even after removed HDD. Configuration: SSD: Crucial M4-CT064M4SSD2 with Firmware 0009 Intel HM65 CPU: i7-2630QM The SSD is set correctly, SATA III 6Gb/s enabled, and everything worked perfectly for nearly a year.

• Kaspersky processing error Explorer.exe (recycle bin)

  I get daily critical errors from Kaspersky involving Explorer.exe... The file in question is almost always in the Recycle Bin, or something on the desktop. • Is there any danger in disabling windows firewall on a azure worker role?

  I'm trying to troubleshoot a bug on our Azure worker role where we occasionally get the error "Unable to read data from the transport connection: An established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine". This error occurs when we are connecting to outside resources like google auth servers. A few people have recommended disabling the firewall\antivirus on the server. I'm just wondering what kind of security risk we would take by doing this. The server doesn't have iis installed but would it be vulnerable to hacking without the firewall? Thanks

  Hello everyone. This problem seems to have been discussed in the past everywhere on google and here, but I have yet to find a solution. A very simple fopen gives me a PHP Warning: fopen(http://www.google.ca): failed to open stream: HTTP request failed!". The URL I am fetching have no importance because even when I fetch http://www.google.com it doesnt work. The exact same script works on different server. The one failing is Ubuntu 10.04 and PHP 5.3.2. This is not a problem in my script, it's something different in my server or it might be a bug in PHP. I have tried using a user_agent in php.ini but no success. My allow_url_fopen is set to On. If you have any ideas, feel free!

  when doing simple query on 4 inner joined tables, the server crashes with the output below appearing in the the mysql .err file. eg. select * from table1 inner join table2 on table1.a = table2.a and table1.b = table2.b inner join table3 on table2.a = table3.a and table2.c = table3.c inner join table4 on table3.a = table4.a and table3.d = table4.d If i remove one of the tables it executes fine. Likewise if I remove a different table, it executes fine. • SharePoint MOSS - Serve HTTP content on an HTTPS page without Mixed Content Warning?

  Our "portal-like" SharePoint site is served using HTTPS/SSL. So a user goes to https://web.company.com and sees content and different Web Parts. So far, no problem. The desire now is to have new Web Parts added that either frame HTTP content (such as Weather Bug) or HTTP RSS feeds. The issue that arises is that by doing this, results in a "Mixed Content" warning in the browser. Has anybody successfully been able to implement such a scenario, or one similar to it? • Weird windows quirk when renaming file

  Hi, I am finding when I try to rename a file in windows 7, i typically select the file i want to rename, hit F2 (rename) and type the new name. I've been getting this weird bug which the while file name gets selected again, sometimes right in the middle of me typing. I can sit there and watch it reselect the entire filename every second or so as if someone is invisibly hitting control+a while type. I have tried making sure that my keys aren't being pressed, and also have even gotten a new keyboard and this problem still consists. I know it'll probably be a long shot, but just hoping someone's seen this issue and has a resolution. UPDATE: This is on a desktop machine, not a laptop, so there's no issue with Trackpad.

• Thunderbird segmentation fault problem

  Hey all, my thunderbird crashes few seconds after it boots up regardless of in safe mode or normal, here is a strace log: http://pastebin.com/tccfYwcD I've searched google, ubuntu forums, and mozilla bug tracker about this problem, but any of found answers did not helped me :/ I've tried: nscd daemon install solutions posted earlier fresh clean instal of ubuntu 10.10 (32b) and thunderbird 3.1.7 from repos on a VM - problem still exists removed all thunderbrid related dot files and dot dirs, and setup profile from beginning Remove thunderbird and related stuff with apt purge, and install tb from official .deb package None of these steps helps me, tb still crashes with segmentation fault :/ I use gmail IMAP account, I've searched and found few other tips on google, but with no success. I've even tried to remove mails from web gui, that came after first notice of problem, still no luck. I'm not using any network fs, and not sharing this account with anyone, and I do not use filesystem or home encryption either just clean install :/ If You guys need some more info for this let me know. TB: 3.1.7 from repos and official package Ubuntu 32bit 10.10 with medibuntu repos, fully updated

• Word suddenly always on top, how to get rid of this?

  For one reason or another, my Word suddenly decided to stay always on top of all other windows. This is terribly annoying. The odd thing is: of three documents I have open, two are on top of everything else, and one behaves normal. I found one other mention of this behavior. I wonder whether this is a known bug and whether there's a workaround. Sometimes closing all windows helps, but later the behavior creeps back. Other Office products don't seem to show this behavior. I'm using Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010, 14.0.4760.1000 (64 bit).
