• Copy files between two windows machines on seperate domains

  I need to copy several database backups between two computers. The source computer initiates the copy and is a Windows 2000 pc and is a member of domain1. The destination machine is running Windows Server 2000 and is a member of domain2. The machines are on separate networks physically connected via a firewall. The files are currently copied via ssh with http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/ installed on the destination machine. There is no need to encrypt the contents during the copy, however the passwords should not be sent in the clear. I am looking for a way to copy the files without having to install a server on the destination. I specifically need help with how to set up the permissions and what ports would need to be opened on the firewall.

• Spawned Process Terminated in GP Startup Script

  I have a Group Policy Startup Script which runs synchronously. I now need this script to run one process asynchronously. So far I have managed to get the spawned process running via the command below, however once the rest of the script finishes and the GP Startup Script "phase" finishes and the logon prompt is shown, my spawned process is terminated. Is there any way to have this process continue beyond the Startup Script phase? cmd /c start spawned.bat I guess the reason why it terminates is because the process was launched by the Startup Script process and when the parent process terminates so do its children. PS I need it to be launched via the exisitng script.

• Setting DNS Siffix for multiple network adapters in a VM

  Is there a way to set the DNS Suffix for multiple network adapters in a VM using the sysprep file? We are trying to setup Windows 2003 VMs with 2 network adapters. In the one adapter case the sysprep we are able to set the suffix using DNSDomain. But this doesnt work in the 2 adapter case. The The VM is setup corrently though without any issues but one of our apps relies on the DNS Suffix value to work correctly. Thanks in advance.

• Apache Redirect from https to https

  I am trying to redirect without a rewrite rule from eg https://www.domain.com to https://www.domain.net . I have a wildcard certificate for *.domain.net . This yields the following warning in my error_log [warn] RSA server certificate wildcard CommonName (CN) `*.domain.net' does NOT match server name!? This makes sense and I understand why the warning. I would like to ask if there is a way to use the Redirect directive to accomplish the above without the warnings. If i type the first one into my browser i end up with my website. 62.212.66.33 If i type my second ip adress in the bar i end up somewhere else. 62.212.66.56 Can i set this second ip to act as secondary nameserver. I made NS and a records for the domains. Waited 72 hours. But it returns no records. for dns check. Is this type of setup possible?

  While I could use memcached on Debian to use the default 11211 port, but I've had great difficulty setting up unix socket, Form what I'v read, I know that I need to create a memcache.socket and add -s /path/to/memcache.socket -a 0766 To /etc/memcached.conf and comment out the default connection port and IP, i.e. -p 11211 -l 127.0.0.1 However, when I restart memcached I get internal server errors on Drupal site. I'm trying to implement unix sockets to avoid TCP/IP overhead and boost overal memcached performance, however not sure how much performance gain one can expect of this tweak. I appreciate your hints or possibly configs to to resolve this.

I'm noticing that the Windows 7/8 Home editions are unable to connect to domains. I'm having to buy the upgrades to the Pro editions. I'm trying to understand as to why the Home edition of the OS is unable to connect to domains?

• Computers "applying computer settings" for a long time on start-up...why?

  Hello. Might be a bit of a slong shot but I'm stumped, along with the ICT Manager for the school I'm working it. In one of the IT rooms when you switch a computer on it will boot through BIOS fine, but when it gets to "applying computer settings" it can hang for a long time (~15 minutes). If you unplug the computer from the network it starts up fine, gets to the login screen, then you can plug the network cable in and it will work fine. I don't think it's anything to do with the fact we've been coming close to running out of IP addresses or a problem with our DHCP. Microsoft KB says apply the latest service pack, which we've done, and check a service. Servers and domian controllers are S2003, Computers and Desktops are XP. Does anybody have any thoughts on what to try?

• Cannot start eventlog service

  On a windows 2k8R2 DC box the eventlog service wont start. When i try to start the service the machine returns: "Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local Computer. Error 13: The data is invalid." event viewer wont open either. obviously, i dont have an event log for this error. ive already tried clearing the event logs. that didnt do anything. the other DC isnt experiencing this issue.

• Host multiple domains with Apache on a VPS

  Hi I have recently bought a windows VPS and installed apache, mysql using xampp. All services are running fine. I can access the hosted site using the IP of VPS but what I need to do is host multiple domains on that server. Actually my requirement was to use htaccess on a php based site but the site had to access data from ms sql server as well. So needed to enable php_mssql.dll in the php.ini which no shared hosting was supporting. Had to go for this VPS. Plesk was installed by default but as htaccess wont work with IIS, I had to stop IIS service and install apache there. Now all is well, but I need to find a way to host multiple domains there. When I bought the VPS they hosting people sent me the dedicated IP of the server and also I have the 2 name servers required to host domains. What is the next step? Exactly which file I need to modify to get things done? Please help! Any kind of help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance for all of your kind help and time.

• Want to send my neighbors to a certain website via DNS, but don't have a clue how. [closed]

  My neighbors have an unsecured WIFI router, and over the administration web-UI of the router I could log in as there was no password set. I don't know which of my neighbors these are, and I'd like to configure their router in a way that they come to my website instead of Google and Facebook, where I set up a warning in german. It this page: http://www.abelssoft.de/liebenachbarn/ Basically, I just want to see if and how this is possible - I'm aware that I could just set the WiFi-password and have them call their network provider to reset the thing, but I really want to see if this could work, because it would be a way cooler effect :-). So this router interface doesn't allow custom redirects, only filters. BUT I can set the DNS that is used, so I thought there might be the possibility to set up a custom DNS on a server, set it as the main DNS and redirect from Google to the URL above. Is this possible? If so, please try to detail a way that I have to go though to achive this. Note that I'm not the super-Linux-skilled person, I have a dyndns account and a Windows machine it points to as well as an Apache+Tomcat if that helps. I could also set up virtual machines on the windows server and redirect to those using a different port. Or is there maybe a webservice that provides such custom DNS?

• Recommend a mail server setup for multiple domains

  Hi all, I've just set up a new Debian web server which I have done plenty of times before, but I want to add a mail server which I have never done before. I am aware of this question, but I would like someone to recommend packages and briefly explain how to use them for providing pop/imap access on multiple domains, a concept that has confused me for a while. I'm planning for this server to grow slowly but surely, from serving an initial 5 or 6 domains to about 20 in the first year, continuing at this rate. (yes, I've jumped on the cloud bandwaggon). At the moment, I have a DNS-A record pointing to my server's IP and nothing else. I'm assuming that I need a DNS-MX record pointing there too, but I haven't read up about it yet so today that's what I'll be doing. Hopefully reading up on the subject and the help that I get here will get my server up and running in no time. Thanks!

• What is the difference between a plain Amazon ec2 instance and beanstalk?

  I am a solo developer and the sites I'm deploying are very small, usually hobby sites and I have a few questions about the Amazon services. Is there a reason for me to use beanstalk or should I just stick with a single ec2 instance? Should I use RDS for database? I heard someone say that I could just install a database on my ec2 instance, making it cheaper. I'm trying to keep everything as cheap as possible. I need to point custom domains to my sites. Pretty sure that means I have to deal with elastic IPs. Do those work with beanstalk or only with individual ec2 instances? Thanks in advance!

I work at a local web-hosting firm and we get a lot of tickets from clients who want to set up these settings. I just set them up something like: example.com. 14400 IN MX 10 ALT1.ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. example.com. 14400 IN MX 10 ASPMX4.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. example.com. 14400 IN MX 15 ASPMX5.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. example.com. 14400 IN MX 15 ASPMX2.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. example.com. 14400 IN MX 30 ASPMX3.GOOGLEMAIL.COM. I see another firm (rival one) who sets up way more MX-records ? Roughly, around 10-15 entries. Am I doing something wrong ? More is better in this case ? Is there a secret that I'm not on too ?

  Exchange 2010, one-server installation (small production, I know not best practice) OWA Connectivity has been confirmed, Autodiscover is configured and working properly for EVERY other installation. Other user accounts tested on problem Outlook, none can connect. Windows Firewall is pre-configured by Group Policy, only modifications being related to remote management. Firewall has also been disabled during diagnostic period. Network discovery and file sharing is enabled on workstation as well. Windows 7 Professional, latest updates installed. Driving me nuts. Help, serverfault?

• Upgrade no raid server to raid

  I have just learned that our PDC has a single drive with 2 partitions. I also know that this drive has bad blocks as recorded in the event log. What I would like to do is to convert this to a RAID solution with a nice balance between economy and performance. I will admit that I have only configured servers with RAID from scratch, and have no experience upgrading an existing system into a RAID system. In fact, I'm not sure it is even possible. Since this is the PDC for 350+ workstations downtime is important. I'd like to hear from other System Administators how they would tackle this and their recommendations for all devices. At this time it seems to me that I can replace the existing drive and then restore from backup or install a controller, drives, configure the RAID an basically start from scratch. • How do I cancel windows server 2003 repair install?

  System: Windows 2003 Server Enterprise Scenario: NTDS db is corrupt and all attempts to fix with esentutl fail. Ran chkdsk which seemed to repair disk error and give access to the ntds.dit file but still esentutl fails. (Attached the drive to a different server to run the esentutl) Error: Access to source database '[path to copy of]/ntds.dit' failed with Jet error -1022. Operation terminated with error -1022 (JET_errDiskIO, Disk IO error) after 0.170 seconds. This error occurs on any disk I cpoy the files to including original location in C:\WINDOWS\NTDS\ Now enter the "Stupid!" and "what was I thinking!?" part (must be the late hour...) Stupid: No updated backup - after using a backup I get a network password error in the lsass error. what was I thinking!?: Started the install repair from the original CD but the install fails since the AD fails to start. Now I cant boot into any mode (safe mode, AD restore etc) nor complete the repair install. I would really like to avoid a fresh install since I have the Exchange server on this DC and would rather migrate to a new server than have to start from scratch. Thanks!

• Two domains hosted on the same server with different root folder shows up the same homepage

  I have hosted two domains from GoDaddy at Linode VPS. They are mobiletoast.com and lesseltechnologies.com Thought the latter site has a separate index folder, whenever I navigate to it, I get the homepage of mobiletoast.com The strange thing is, I see the expected page (It works), when I open the site from my mobile phone. But when I open the site from my PC (any browser, without any cache, hard refresh), I get the homepage of mobiletoast.com The Linode support team says, they see the correct "It works" page. But I am not able to see that page. • how to figure out why sites on my server aren't loading

  I seem to randomly receive "page cannot load, cannot connect to server" errors for sites on one of my servers. when this happens, it seems to only happen on certain IPs or IP ranges at a time. I say this because while I'll get the error from my home laptop I'll be able to access the site fine from my work computer or from an offsite VPS. DNS records should already be fully propagated as these records were updated months ago. I have no idea how to diagnose what's going on. Is there a tool in cpanel or outside on the web that can help me figure out what's going on?

  I've disabled the web server on Snow Leopard, and I'm using an emulated Ubuntu with Lighttpd web server. In order to access to the web pages I need to specify the ip of the emulated machine. However I now need to associated such ip with "localhost" in Leopard environment. When I type localhost in Leopard I actually want to visit the localhost on the Ubuntu machine. Symptoms: From a domain-member Windows 7 Client: Domain credentials to a domain controller = success Domain credentials to a member server (by hostname or FQDN) = success Domain credentials to a member server (by IP) = fail Local credentials to a member server (by either) = success From a non-domain-member Windows 7 Client: Domain credentials to a domain controller = success Domain credentials to a member server = fail Local credentials to a member server = success (Identical behavior from a Mac RDC 2.1 client) Server Configuration Details: Windows 2008 R2 Datacenter w/ SP1 The domain in question is a subdomain of a Windows 2008 domain (forest root). Root has DCs in both Site A and Site B, subdomain only has DCs in Site B. RDP is operating normally on all root member-servers and DCs. No remote desktop settings are defined by GPOs. Network level authentication is enabled; all clients are compatible and the certificate exchange/SSL handshake completes successfully. Not catching any errors in netlogon log.

  I am developing a web application on localhost with domains and sub-domains and I would like to use a HTTPS connection. On my Mac OS, in order to enable SSL, I need to set Apache correctly, so I followed some guide to accomplish part of that. Now it is time to choose a certificate in order to test HTTPS requests. I seen the cacert.pem, but I don't know how to use that and for what it is used (can you explain to me some about its usage?)... So, is it possible to use the cacert.pem (see the link) for all my domains and subdomains (maybe, as a wildcard certificate) on localhost? If so, how to do that? What certificate I have to take and use? If no, what I need to do in order to use a wildcard certificate for all my domains and subdomains on localhost? Of course those certificates must be accepted by browsers and working for HTTPS connection between my domains.
