    I like to use the following commands to manage 'TIME_WAIT', in the hope to free up resources. echo 20 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse=1 sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle=1 I found something interesting while doing a tcpdump. Sometimes if a client makes a connection (syn), the server will not reply (syn -ack). My question is, could it be because of the top three commands.

    I would appreciate some help debugging my windows 2008 profile service. Any domain account that logs on to my 2008 machine gets a +- 20 second waiting time on "user profile service" I am using roaming profiles, they are around 8mb in size, and most folders are already redirected to a network share. event log registers no errors, there is more than 1 network card installed, but I have the correct card listed as "primary" Is there any way to increase verbosity of logging on specifically the "user profile service" ?     I had a hell of a time installing lxml for python2.7 on centOs5.6. For some background, python2.7 is an alternative installation of python on centOS5.6 which comes with python2.4 installed. it was bulit from source per its instrucitons ./configure make make altinstall However, after about 20 hours of trying I managed to find a workable solution and was able to install lxml. Until, I notice the following error at the top of the interpreter: python2.7: /usr/lib64/libz.so.1: no version information available (required by python2.7) Python 2.7.2 (default, Jun 30 2011, 18:55:26) [GCC 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-50)] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. >>> print 'Sheeeeut!' this error is printed out everytime I run a script. For example: $ ./test.py /usr/local/bin/python2.7: /usr/lib64/libz.so.1: no version information available (required by /usr/local/bin/python2.7) the script runs flawlessly, but this error is bothersome. After some digging I have seem to believe I have a wrong version of libz installed, that it is either an older version or built for a different platform. I'm not quite sure how, I've only installed libz through yum, as far as I know. Although, I can't quite remember every little thing I tried in my twenty hours of trying. I think having it install to /usr/local/ was a poor default choice. However, without the make uninstall option being present it seems to be a time consuming task for a solution I am not quite sure would solve my problem.

My question is: will/should tcpdump output some packages coming from 192.168.16.21?

  • My facebook blocking ACL has stopped working

    This probably very simple. This was setup before I arrived, and has been working to block facebook. I recently eliminated some static port forwarding on this 2691 (as in, I don't think anything else has changed), and now facebook is once again accessible. Why is this list not doing what it seems like it should be doing (and was doing)? Would an extended outbound ACL be more appropriate (I think that would have been my thought if I had been tasked with creating this in the first place)? Something different?   • Using curl -s in *nix command line not working for some reason

    I am trying to install composer (though to be honest I really have no idea how it fully works and documentation seems to be quite poor) on my MediaTemple DV machine. I am using their [instructions][1] Trying to install globally using: $ curl -s https://getcomposer.org/installer | php My command line (again using putty and logged into my server as root) thinks for a second, then sets up for next prompt. I run a simple ls -l to check for the file it should have downloaded with no luck. Any idea what could be causing the issue? I have tested and do in fact have curl installed.     Hi, I have some issue to install MySecureShell on CentOS 5.4 because I want to use Yum to install it (for maintainability). I get this error : yum install mysecureshell Error: Missing Dependency: libcrypto.so.10()(64bit) is needed by package mysecureshell-1.20-1.x86_64 (mysecureshell) I assume that the issue is that openSSL shipped with CentOS 5.4 is too old... I don't want to install everything manually so I would like to know if there is an equivalent to MySecureShell which would work with CentOS 5.4. Thanks!

Which approach should I use until I can change the battery on a weekend? Should I switch from rdate to ntp? The machine runs plenty of cronjobs and thus I need to ensure that everything is started even when the time is changed.

  • Why won't vyatta allow SMTP through my firewall?

    I am setting up a vyatta router on VMware ESXi, But I see to have hit a major snag, I could not get my firewall and NAT to work correctly. I am not sure what was wrong with NAT but it "seems" to be working now. But the firewall is not allowing traffic from my WAN interface (eth0) to my LAN (eth1). I can confirm its the firewall because I disabled all firewall rules and everything worked with just NAT. If put the firewalls (WAN and LAN) back in place nothing can get through to port 25. I am not really sure what the issue could be I am using pretty basic firewall rules, I wrote the rules while looking at the vyatta docs so unless there is something odd with the documentation they "should" be working. UPDATE Just to see if the firewall was working properly I made a rule to block SSH from the WAN interface. When I checked for port 22 on my primary WAN address it said it was still open even though I outright blocked the port. Here is the rule I used; rule 21 { action reject destination { address 74.219.80.163 port 22 } protocol tcp } So now I am convinced either I am doing something wrong or the firewall is not working like it should.

My users are running an application from Win2008 Terminal server using RemoteApp. If the application remains idle for 10 minutes it gets "locked" and the user is required to enter username and password to continue using it. This is VERY VERY annoying as the app usually sits idle for bout 20-30 minutes, used for 1 min... repeat.
