• Who should own the root folder of a drive?

  All partitions are NTFS. The system is Windows 7 Pro. It does not belong to a domain. I do use shared folders occasionally (both via the Homegroup and old school sharing). Should I set the owner to be Administrators or SYSTEM for a A) fixed drive? B) removable drive? C) Is it ok to make every object on the drive inherit the new ownership? I just realized that I had some messy settings because I turned UAC on for the first time in years and I am now getting some undesirable prompts. I already have permissions set properly and I am only concerned with ownership.

• rTorrent, too low memory usage !?

  I want to know from more experienced rTorrent users how to tweak the .rtorrent.rc so that rTorrent will cache disk reading and writing (same as uTorrent does). I have set the max_memory_usage = 1GB but this amount is not used. I run 6 rTorrent instances on a Quad Core, 8 GB Ram machine and total used memory reported by htop is only ~500MB. I need to use memory buffers cause disk IO activity is very high.

  I need to draw a few diagrams that describe the working of some smaller programs (nothing real, but some exercise to illustrate some points). They're supposed to be 'old kind' diagrams, like you remember from the "old school of programming" - I gather some users here will know what I mean. And it's be good if they have ready blocks for program units, IF conditions, FOR/DO loops and such ... So, anyone knows of an application for such ? (I've tried Visio which I have on my work machine (for whatever reason ... I sure didn't put it there) ... but it is "too visual" for this kinda thing ... I just want to draw a few simple black on white diagrams ... nothing special or in colours).

• Memcached Debuging/Server Logs Monitor the Memcached Servers?

  I have chat engine which is based on the Memcached variables, putting them into arrays and reading them in other end via jquery, which works fine 95% of the times, however when the server load is high memcached (presume its the memcached) the crash and browser gets stucks up. I dont think its jquery issue since this only happens when the server load is very high. I need a way to monitor the memcached servers or somehow write a log file into where the fails/errors comes in... Any idea on how i can do this ? or any idea why memcached servers fails ? • How to crash a program

  I have a program called BlueCoat Proxy installed on my school issued laptop that basically blocks every second website on the Internet, including stack exchange, YouTube and yahoo answers. I do not have administrator rights, nor can I delete anything in program files, I tried every possible method of obtaining admin rights. It is not accessible in task manager (it doesn't even appear there). I tried to close it with Windows command prompt through commands like 'taskkill' but it returns 'Access is Denied' (I'm only denied access with that program). Does anyone know a method of crashing a program with a batch file or VB program? I was thinking something like the ping command, though for a program. Maybe automating 1000 meaningless requests to the program? Your input on the subject matter is appreciated, however telling me that this is wrong or illegal is not.

• Digital Blue Digital Movie Creator 3.0 driver

  I'm having a complete 'mare of a time trying to use my schools Digital Blue cameras. We've got the model 3 ones, but can't find the driver disc and using the Windows Hardware Installation Wizard gets me no where! Can you help me to find the driver? When I've used it at my old school it had a piece of software called the Digital Movie Creator, which I've heard you can use to make stop-motion films, which is what I want to do! • When connecting to a unix box, how does it know you have SSH setup on your desktop?

  When you use something like putty to connect to a linux box, and you setup your SSH keys etc. When connecting, how does it tell the server that you want to connect using your SSH keys? Is SSH running as a service on a particular port or does it simply pass your private-key and then the login service sees that and tries to connect using it? Just looking for a fairly high level understanding (with maybe some detail if you want to...)

• DNS updating issue

  Hey guys, I'm new to serverfault so please excuse me if I sound a tad nub. I work in an environment that is kinda peace mealed together, and I honestly don't know how it works. I'm new to the IT field and am still in school. When I replace a PC I rename the old one to mo-o-pcname and give the new one the proper name of mo-pcname (mo is a location thing we use so it really doesn't apply to the problem.) The new PC will function on the network; it will have the ability to access network resources (printers, file shares, etc) and it will have the ability to get out to the internet. However I can no longer ping the machine. It would appear as if the DNS (A) record is not getting updated or something. Like I said I'm kinda new to the field and just trying to work through this problem. Thanks for your help.

• Please wait for User Profile Service... on WIndows 7 takes around 1-2 minutes to process

  When loggging into our domain, after entering account credentials the log in process takes around 1-2 minutes before it gets past the User Profile Service, the rest of the process takes 2-3 secs. This effects all machines running Windows 7 Enteprise 32-bit and is on fairly high spec laptops (SSD drives, i5 2.93Ghz CPU, 4GB memory). Is there any way to speed this up or is this time delay acceptable? Thanks in advance.

Is it something I'm doing, is it working? It is installed, it's given high priority in IIS (do see it visibly present). Any ideas why it isn't logging? Should it log even if not rewriting?

• Monitor for HD video editing

  I have been researching for days and nights on a good monitor to buy for a Mac Pro with an ATI Radeon 2600 XT (256mb). It will be used extensively for HD video editing (1080p) and photo editing, and likely also digital/3D animation next year(a lot of FCP + CS4). I am a student, so money is a little bit of an issue, but I want something that I'll be able to use semi-professionally after I'm done school, and am willing to finance something if it is worth the cost. I'm HOPING for something under $1000 though. The IPS Ultrasharps from Dell seem to be getting good reviews from other video editors. Accurate colour correction is a concern for me (hopefully something that covers Adobe spectrum), as well as a decent response time, HD resolutions, and DVI port. Also something with good gradient/definition in black areas, as this is difficult for editing on most LCDs. 1X1 pixel, brightness, good DVD playback etc. Hopefully this is not impossible to find for under $2000!

  I'm here because the Google has failed to get me what I need. I just recently graduated from university, and I'm working on a website. Back in college I used the school's web server for my projects, and there were a few tools that aided in the process. One was a Linux program/script/executable/prayer to the computing gods called "httperrors". You typed that into bash, and it would pop up any errors that would occur while running the web server. Specifically, if you had errors in your php code, it would tell you what was wrong. I guess it was a debugger of sorts. I can't find any such program's details online. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

  I'm planning on using a MacBook Pro with a projector that only has a VGA input (through the MBP's Mini DisplayPort and a Mini DisplayPort to VGA converter). So I typically zoom in to the point just before the level where I have to scroll horizontally.   Hey all, I run the following from command line: handbrakeCLI.exe -i SourceFile.mkv -o OutputFile.mkv --stop-at 120 According to the CLIGuide you can supply the --stop-at value as seconds (which is what I want, stop encoding 120 seconds into the file). My purpose for this is to quickly create a very high quality video clip from a full movie for testing other encoding processes. However, when I view my output file it is the entire movie. Any ideas?
