• Changing Windows 'hosts' file in guest OS under Parallels Desktop 6

  Hi all, I am running Win7 in a Parallels Desktop 6 on Mac. I would like to modify my Windows hosts file. When doing this through notepad it says "You don't have permission to save in this location..." I am logged on as a regular windows user - not as 'local admin'. How can I edit the file? How can I grant my regular user 'local admin' rights? How can change the Windows user to 'admin' ... this option seems to be missing in my windows install... Does anybody recognize the issue?   Hi Alls, I'm trying to make a script to list all directory, subdirectory, and files in a given directory. I tried this : import sys,os root="/home/patate/directory/" path=os.path.join(root,"targetdirectory") for r,d,f in os.walk(path): for file in f: print os.path.join(root,file) Unfortunatly it doesn't work properly, i get all the files, but not them complete path. like : if the dir struct would be : /home/patate/directory/targetdirectory/123/456/789/file.txt It would print: /home/patate/directory/targetdirectory/file.txt What i need is the first result, any help would be greatly appreciated ! • Set resolution of unattached display in OS X?

  I have an HDTV that I'm hooking up via DVI to HDMI from my Mac mini. In my struggle to eliminate overscan I managed to set the screen resolution to something not supported by the tv. How do I change the resolution without that screen attached? Specifically my tv says it's "720p and 1366 x 768 Resolution". The 720p resolution option in OS X made for a ton of overscan (couldn't see menubar or dock at all). So I tried something x 768 and managed to shoot myself in the foot with an unsupported resolution. I thought it was okay to experiment since a resolution change times out if you don't accept it. Apparently that didn't happen for some reason. I've already deleted the com.apple.windowserver.plist in /Library/Preferences as I saw suggested in other places, with no effect.

  Is there a diff tool I can run from the command line or maybe just an online webpage that will compare single lines? GitHub diffs do this but I'm don't want to publish things to GitHub just to read the diffs!   I have a MacBook that prints to a shared Windows 7 printer. Sometimes the Windows machine is asleep, and the Mac will just queue up its print requests. I recently created a script to send a wake-on-lan packet to a Windows 7 machine. This wakes up the Windows machine and printing starts. Great, but I think the system can be automated en Is it possible to have the MacBook run the wake-on-lan script everytime something is printed? Stated more generally, can I have the OS X print subsystem execute a script everytime something is printed?

  Hi, I'm trying to connect to my HP/UX machine from Mac OS X using Xnest. The problem is that I can not get the keyboard to work. I can see the login-prompt, but unable to type in my username. • How to install PyQt on Mac OS X 10.6

  I want to install PyQt. This seems kind of complicated to install on OS X. I haven't found any precompiled packages of it (are there any? I would really prefer those). So I downloaded PyQt. And SIP, because it depends on that. Tried the same on PyQt -- and failed of course: /Library/Frameworks/QtCore.framework/Headers/qglobal.h:288:2: error: #error "You are building a 64-bit application, but using a 32-bit version of Qt. Check your build configuration." Ok, so I tried with python configure.py --use-arch=i386. Same error. Any idea?

• How to recover my invisible HD again?

  I made this several times now, but this time something bad happened. What I did: I installed Windows 7 at a 32GB partition on my slot 2 HD in my MacPro. Windows 7 made a 105MB partition… I knew this before, but what I didn’t know was that this partition is now on my slot 4 HD. My home folder, my private videos and some other stuff are on this 1TB drive. What I found out so far: I’m currently logged in as another admin since my OS partition as well as the two other HD's aren't harmed. Disk Utility: … only shows the 105MB NTSF partition on this 1TB volume. It isn’t showing my old 1TB partition/ex-HD named "storehouse". Only the partition tab is telling me that there now is a 1TB empty free unpartitioned space. Data Rescue II: … is showing the Volume as it used to be with it's old Name "storehouse". A quick scan and a thorough scan both were done in 1 second which leds me to the conclusion that there's isn’t something deleted at all (» hope!). Data Rescue doesn’t even mention the damn "system reserved" partition. Drive Genius: … also shows the old partition and doesn’t mention the new one. But looking at the info it tells me under "content": FDisk_partition_scheme (instead of Apple_partition_scheme). Well D'oh…. Tech Tools: … doesn’t show the volume, otherwise I'd might have been tempted to press rebuild/repair. What to do next?? I think the best approach is to buy another 1TB HD and let Disk Warrior Clone my old one to it… just to be on the safe side. But what is the best thing to do after this… ???

I'm sure that I can grab it with the key "Print Screen" . but I don't found any key for it on my Mac. also though Windows Snippet tools can take the whole screen, I've to use the cursor .. • All terminal commands (like ls, cd, edit, open) are returning errors on my Mac

  From what I can tell from reading other questions/answers is that my .bash_profile file may be corrupt. If I type echo $PATH in terminal the result is: /usr/local/git/bin From what I've read, that's not what the result is supposed to be. But I also can't get any of the commands (like edit or subl, for Sublime Text 2) to open the .bash_profile file to edit it. I was able to open the file in TextEdit using "cmd-shift-.", and here's what's in the file: [[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" PATH=$PATH:~/bin export PATH export PATH=/usr/local/git/bin But the file is LOCKED, so I can't edit it there either. I'm very new to programming and in the middle of trying to install everything on my Mac to go through a Ruby on Rails tutorial. I can't even check my version of ruby, since even ruby -v returns -bash: ruby: command not found Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  Ok so this is what I got, but it don't look right... The set up is as follows: My Mac is on a wireless network, presumably behind a firewall over which I have no admin privileges. Further, said wireless network changes my internal IP randomly at random times, so I do not know what my ip is. Note that localhost is a variable ip I forward some port or the other to my dns: ssh -R 19999:localhost:22 sourceuser@remotehost connect to my remotehost from my machine: ssh sourceuser@remotehost and then connect to the port I forwarded: ssh localhost -p 19999 [solved] Second question, there are a bunch of ssh clients for the iphone. Which one should I use? EDIT: Since jailbreak is not illegal, simply frowned upon by the Corporation, I've decided to go with that. I have a nice shell with openssh and the works. Best of all, it's free and it does exactly what you expect.

  I've got an late 2009 macbook pro 13' and yesterday I replaced the native hd (new hd: Hitachi; same form factor). I choosed "Restore from Time Machine" in the options menu on the snow leopard install discs and waited several hours to complete. After an reboot the mac shows up a white screen with apple logo and tiny loading animation. Nothing happens. After another restart; the same. Now I cant boot from CD using the C-Key and I have no idea how to fix that problem.

• Mac firewall blocking nginx (port 80) from external side

  I installed nginx using ports and started it with sudo. Accessing the nginx welcome page from localhost works perfectly, however accessing it from an external computer fails. Doing an nmap on the computer from the outside reveals 80/tcp filtered http So clearly the mac firewall is blocking the port. I then proceed to add the nginx executable to the firewall exception list as seen in this image, however the nmap still shows up as port 80 being filtered and I'm unable to access the webpage. The exact binary that is in the list is /opt/local/sbin/nginx which to my knowledge seems correct Any ideas what I should do? Thanks! P.S. Turning the firewall off does allow me to access the website from the outside world, however that isn't an ideal solution.

  Hi, I'm running Windows XP sp3 on my mac using bootcamp. Objective: I'd like to move this partition to a windows machine. This is what I tried: 1. create image using winclone 2. restore drive to disk partition on windows machine using paragon 3. reboot from new partition Results: it attempts to boot in XP (windows flag and progress bar load screen) but then gives me the old BSOD. safe mode just hangs while loading. (I then uninstalled KB977165 on a hunch, but that did nothing to help the issue.) Any ideas, advice, etc would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  Am running a MacBook Pro, and have never installed Chrome, Google Earth, or anything blatantly Google. Just installed Little Snitch (are there no good free firewalls for Mac?) and see that CURL is sending to Google every few minutes, as is a request to Google update and more. Little Snitch doesn't say what program setup these requests. So, how do I find out how G got on my machine, why is it sending so many requests (every minute or so) and how do I remove it (and is it there for reasons other than to help G spy on me)?

  I want to run Squeezebox server on my Mac running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard. The Firewall settings on 10.6 now let you speciy by Application things that are allowed to connect through the firewall. But Squeezebox server isn't an application, so I can't select it. If I turn the firewall off, it works fine. This is a reasonable step for a desktop (as it's always connecting to the 'net through the router's firewall) but on a laptop that connects via public WiFi it doesn't seem like a good idea. Help!

  I am using your excellent ts_blocker, release 20120530, on my server 2008 R2 Enterprise. it works very fine, i use the vbs script, launched with wscript. The only problem is that is does not work for users attempting to connect RDP from a mac intosh. With this machine the distant IP seems to be not recognized when the login fails. The IP is visible when the login is good (event ID 4624) but not when it fails (Audit failure event ID 4625) : then the IP is not to be seen in the event log ! In the "network information" of the event log entry is nothing given. Have you already been told of that and is there something to do ?

• How to disable Spotlight content indexing in Mac OS

  From Windows experience, I could always elect Live search to only index file names not their content. Is this something that can be done with Spotlight on a Mac? It used to index absolutely everything, for instance it would return a bunch of video files for any obscure character combination typed into the search field. Right now I've disabled Spotlight entirely as per this answer, but it seems to have disabled searching altogether. For instance, Finder is yet to locate any .pdf files in a small directory as I'm typing this question (unlike windows search which would still be able to work even with indexing disabled) Alternatively, if there is any way (including a trusted third-party app) that will index file names and metadata e.g. ID3 tags that would likely be the preferred option.

  Im looking for some advice on a system Im looking to impliment within our company, but so far I have not found an adequate solution too. I need to provide my users with a way to backup there laptops whilst in the office and if possible offsite as well, we have a mixture of Windows & Mac laptops so software should ideally be multi platform. This is the first time i am attempting to-do something like this as we normally charge the users with responsibility for their backups. I have ruled out most of the services like dropbox, sugarsync (unless one exists that does this) as whilst they does exactly what I want it does not give me any control over restoring / recovering data in the event of the user being unavailable, as it requires their account password to access data.

• Running a command line app with sudo and password automatically on OS X startup

  I need to run an app at startup/login on my mac. I want it to launch in the background and start doing it's work without interrupting me or me having to start it up because I invariably forget and then when I need it, it wasn't running! I have tried using AppleScript to tell Terminal to run it and type my password in, but it ends up opening multiple Terminal windows and not working. Ideally I need a script that I can just add to the user login items and it will run for me. The app has no way of taking a password argument either and it has a password as well as the sudo! I need a solution that can either be done as an applescript (which can be made into an executable) or i need a commandline script but I have no idea about them. • windows printer spool gets stuck with file at 64kb from linux and mac

  Hi I have two printers one on a file server with windows 2003, and other with windows XP. The thing is that when i try to print from my machine, my file stays in queue for ever, it says 64kb out of whatever the file i send. I have seen similar problems with some machines that run on Mac OS X. The windows machines apparently have no problems printing. They are not connect through active directory, just the network. In the past I have seen people install non microsoft windows Printer server on windows, i dont remember the name of any of the programs. I have being googling a lot and have not found anything to replace the microsoft print spooler service, maybe i am mistaken. Everyday I have to restart the print spooler service i even created a bat file for it. I am out of ideas here.

• Mac OS X desktop background gets reset to "Andromeda Galaxy.jpg" when users log out

  I'm running Mac OS 10.6 server, and have a set of 10.6 and 10.7 workstations connected to it for authentication and MCX. Users have network profiles (home folder stored on server, via AFP). When users are logged in, they can change their desktop background. So far so good. However, the next time they log in, their desktop background has been reset to "Andromeda Galaxy.jpg". Though MCX is enabled and used to control other settings, MCX is disabled for the Desktop. What is keeping the users' desktop background from being preserved? How can I fix it?
