  I need to unarchive a file to the /Developer folder. My file is in /Users/User/Desktop/VMware/Downloads And I am trying tar -xf qt-everywhere-ios-4.8.0-arm7-nossl.tar.gz -C /Developer and keep getting: Lions-Mac:Downloads User$ tar -xf qt-everywhere-ios-4.8.0-arm7-nossl.tar -C /Developer tar: Error opening archive: Failed to open 'qt-everywhere-ios-4.8.0-arm7-nossl.tar' How can I achieve this? Install Qt for iOS SDK The Qt for iOS SDK has been configured to be installed in the default Xcode installation location /Developer. It is not possible to install the SDK into another location without first rebuilding it, as the install location is contained within the qmake executable, and that is built as part of Qt. • File Sharing: User-created folders are read-only to others on Mac 10.6 Server

  Hi there We recently got a new Mac Mini Server with 10.6 Server on it. It has two 500GB volumes, one of which [Macintosh HD2 the extra one other than the boot disk] we are using to share our work files. I have added a user account for each user in the Users pane on Server Preferences, and all our staff (users added to the system) are added to a new group, called toolboxstaff. Now, when a user creates a new folder on this volume, folders are created with read-only access for everyone else besides the owner. How do I set it that when a user creates a folder, it creates it with RW access for the toolboxstaff group? Thanks in advance.

  I have been trying to open Google Chrome from command line but with no luck! I have tried How do I start Chrome using a specified "user profile"? My goal is to open Google Chrome with a specific profile such as "profile 1", "profile 2", or "Default" from the command line, using bash to be specific, on my Mac. UPDATE: 6/3/14 Got this to work BUT only works when opening chrome for the first time open -a Google\ Chrome --args --"profile-directory"="Profile 1" So How do you get --args to be accepted AFTER google chrome as already been launched??

• How to sniff for wireless MAC addresses in area - My laptop got stolen

  A few days ago my apartment got broken in, and they took all the electronics, including my $1500 laptop. We are pretty sure it's an inside job (as in someone from the same building), so I believe that the stuff is in someones apartment. Is there any tool that tells you what wireless adapters are active within range? I have my laptops MAC address, so I could use that to find out who stole it. I think it's worth a shot.   Is their a script or process completely reset all file system file permissions to factory default? (Less restoring from a image backup or reinstalling the OS). This would include I've affected all files from / to Applications and home folder and all contents. (Everything) I've tried to use the Disk Utility's First Aid 'Repair Disk Permissions' but it didn't seem to touch or affect everything - some but not all. I've ran it twice so far... I've seen this but it's not quite the something. Fixing mac user file permissions, not the system The reason for all of this is I accidentally ran a chmod on all files (as sudo). Working too fast, now I'm in a hole.

• How to skip words in OS X terminal?

  Say I wrote a long command in the Mac OSX terminal, i.e say "Hello, how are you? I am good thank you. How is it going with you? Fine, thanks" and now I decided I want to change the word Hello to Hi. To do that, right now I have to keep pressing (or hold down) the left keyboard key until the "cursor" gets to the end of the word Hello, and then delete it. The usual 'holding down option' technique doesn't work as it does in most other OS X applications. Is there a way to skip a word at a time instead (or any other shorter way of getting the cursor there)? Thanks!

• greyed out folder in OS X

  Hi all, I installed the intel compiler on my Mac (10.6), and it installed fine, but the folder in which it is installed (/opt, i.e. at the root) is not visible by default, and when I use the Finder "go to" feature, it appears, but as greyed out. What does it mean? I also checked out the permissions, and the only odd thing is that there is an @ at the end of permissions. Any ideas? I'm asking because while the intel compiler is installed (all the files are there), I cant use it from XCode (3.2), and I'm wondering whether this could be why. Thank in advance A

• Problems starting MySQL on Mac OS X

  I am not able to start MySQL server on Mac OS X 10.4.11. MySQL was installed using Macports. MySQL was running fine until it suddenly died without any obvious reason. When running "mysql", I get the error message: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' (2) If I try to start MySQL manually, I get the following error message: sudo /opt/local/share/mysql5/mysql/mysql.server start Starting MySQL/opt/local/share/mysql5/mysql/mysql.server: line 159: kill: (636) - No such process ERROR! In /etc/mysql/my.cnf I have: socket = __PREFIX/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock But the path "opt/local/var/run/mysqld/" does not exist on my system. I tried to change the socket path to "__PREFIX/var/run/mysql5/ mysqld.sock" (which is where the socket is located). Unfortunately, this did not help either. Owner and Permissions for /opt/local/var/run/mysql5/ are correctly set. Any suggestions on how to start MySQL again? Thanks for your advice.

• Using Xbox 360 controller with Mac OS X (specifically turning it off)

  So I've been using this driver for a few months with the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller For Windows with my Mac Mini. Here's an article about the driver on Gizmodo. The driver works really well for actually using the controller, but there doesn't seem to be a way to power off the controller without pulling the batteries. Does anyone know of a replacement driver that includes power-off capabilities, or know of some other undocumented way to turn the controller off? Note: I've been having problems getting to the site, but it could be our corporate filtering.

• Nearest PC equivalent to Mac Target Disk Mode?

  Mac firmware has a special boot mode that allows you to offer its internal hdd to another computer as an external disk (you just connect the two machines via an IEEE 1394 cable). Only the second machine needs a functioning OS installed. Any good suggestions for something similar on the PC side of things? Block level access isn't important to me, I'd just like to be able to copy files off it. It doesn't matter to me if it uses Ethernet, IEEE 1394, or wifi - I just like having a quick way to access files on a client PC. Is there any single-purpose Linux distro specially designed to do this? It'd be nice to have something super simple, quickbooting, and small that I could install on a USB drive. I used to use Knoppix, but it's overkill as a Target Mode replacement.

  Is there an MacOS command that makes a dhcp request, and renews the old lease, drops it for a new one, or usefully reports errors or lack of response from a dhcp server? This would both help fix networking on the machine after problems on the network without rebooting and would also be useful to diagnose wider networking problems from a mac. I can not find any command equivalent of dhclient though obviously some component must be serving this purpose. The question is, is that component exposed to a command line interface? I am biased to the command line for these features and may have overlooked settings panels or tools that might solve it using a gui interface. I believe this question is at the heart of this other question: Is there an equivalent command for 'init.d/networking restart' in OS X

  I am trying to secure a Mac after discovering that network links are being established to some unwanted internet sites. Using 'lsof -i' (list open 'files', internet) I have seen that launchd, ntpd, firefox, dropbox and other processes are either 'LISTENING' or have 'ESTABLISHED' links to a site or sites which I suspect have to do with spyware. I have been trying to find startup files and preference lists that initiate thise links but can't find them. I could easily reinstall the OS and restore data from a backup but I'd prefer to know how to fix this as I have six Macs to look after. Thanks...

  I connected to a Windows Server 2008 R2 shared folder from a Mac OS X Mountain Lion computer over the Internet using this command: mount -t smbfs //user@server/path/to/share local_folder Is traffic encrypted by default? What settings do I look at (if any) to know whether it was encrypted? If it wasn't encrypted, what's the easiest way to encrypt it? Was the password I typed at the command line encrypted? Update: sysadmin1138 has addressed the password question. Does anyone know how I can tell if the traffic itself is being encrypted?

First of all, I'm told bind: Address already in use. This is only after I've tried the command before. How do I manually close a port forwarding session? Second, when I change the command to be ssh -L 127.0.0.1:3310:[[remote ip]]:3306 user@server -N (I changed the local port to listen on). I'm told channel 1: open failed: connect failed: Connection refused when I try to connect to the MySQL server via MySQL workbench or sequel pro.   Hi all; Apologies if this has been discussed previously... I did a stack overflow and google search but probably didn't use the right keywords. Anyway, is there an easy way to determine what files are open on Mac OS X? I had an issue in which I could not unmount a firewire HD until I closed all running apps. Turns out keychain access had a reference to a file on the HD, but it begged the question: how to find out what files are open and what app (or apps) has the file open? • "php: command not found" after changing PHP system files in OS X

  I wanted to install Symfony on Mac OS X Lion. Apparently, as MAMP was already installed on my computer, there was a problem with the "timezone" field in the php.ini file. I can't remember exactly the error but basically, Symfony installation required a timezone like "Europe/Paris" but MAMP apparently changed that part. Well, it's very vague but I've seen on the web that other people had the same issue. So I tried one of the solution I found (without success) but: It didn't work. I can not use the php command anymore ("-bash: php: command not found"). I can not remember the exact commands I did to go back. Here are some potential relevant commands I found in my history and that correspond with the beginning of my problem, in this order: sudo mv /usr/bin/php /usr/bin/php-old sudo ln -s /Applications/MAMP/bin/php5/bin/php /usr/bin/php rm /usr/bin/php-old sudo cp php.ini.default /etc/php.ini rm php.ini but I don't know anymor in which repertory I was. sudo mv /usr/bin/php-old /usr/bin/php

• SVN Mac - Stripping files of SVN meta data?

  I downloaded some source files on a Mac that were previously part of some working copy on the authors computer, I need to use these files in another repository but the SVN client "Versions" for Mac is picking up on the data from this old repository. I can't find the ".SVN" folder anywhere... any idea on how to "cleanse" these files so I can commit them to my repository?

• Custom prompt doesn't work on Mac's terminal

  I like to use a custom prompt (current path in blue) on my unix machine: export PS1='\[\e[0;34m\]\w \$\[\e[m\] ' But when I try to use it on Mac's terminal it doesn't work: it fails to detect the end of the prompt and overwrites the prompt when I type commands. This also happens when I'm inputting a long command where it wraps over the same line instead of starting a new line. I don't understand why this is the case since I use bash on both machines. Any suggestions on how to remedy this?

  I have installed php5 apache2 mysql5 and postgresql84 using MacPorts. I realize my mac already has apache but it didn't have apache2 nor postgesql hooked up to use with php. I want to not use the default apple apache and use the new macports install. How do I tell my computer to stop looking at the old apache? When I do apachectl in the terminal I believe it is using the old apache. I would like to hook it up to use the new one. How would I do that? The new stuff is installed at /opt/local/apache2 and the old stuff is installed at /private/etc/apache2 I went to system preferences...Sharing...and shut off Web Sharing but when I do apachectl's that turns it on and off in the preferences. I'm running in Snow Leopard.

  Is there a way to have a single Mac OS X application utilize a different region format than the system default? For example, I'd like to keep my system operating in English with US date formats but have my lesson planning software utilize French date formats. If I put my entire computer into French mode, I get the desired results, but I'd rather keep my entire system in US mode and have the Planbook application work with French region formats. I know about Language Switcher but that only allow per-app selections of localizations to be used, not which date format to use. I don't care about having the French localization of Planbook appear, I just want the date format to be French.

• Copying OS X account settings to new user account

  Hi I hope someone can help me... I accidentally renamed my own user name on my mac running OS X 10.4.11 and tried renaming back to what it was but now I have two accounts (the one I want to use which has all my preferences, applications, mail boxes, etc etc) is it possible to copy my settings from my original into this new user name? When I open my computer it defaults to this new account but everything is setting up from new and I just need to get access to all my work documents, mail settings etc. If there is anyone who could help out, I would be very grateful.
