• How should I measure Concurrent Licence Usage

  Hi I have detailed stats on user access to my system detailing login and logout times as well as machine used, network username etc. I am in need of measuring what I would term a concurrent user licences level based on this information. Now I could take the maximum logged in for any 1 day in a 3 month period say 170 or I could take the average say 133. Does anyone have or know of a formula for working this out or is it as simple as the high water mark which is 170 in my example. A client has recently gone from an unlimited licence to a concurrent licence so I am faced with the task of setting the initial licence level. There is potential for more licence sales in the future so I don't want it set to high and I do want it based on historical data that the system collects rather than guess work.

  The Java Memory Model (since 1.5) treats final fields differently to non-final fields. In particular, provided the this reference doesn't escape during construction, writes to final fields in the constructor are guaranteed to be visible on other threads even if the object is made available to the other thread via a data race. (Writes to non-final fields aren't guaranteed to be visible, so if you improperly publish them, another thread could see them in a partially constructed state.) Is there any documentation on how/if the Scala compiler creates final (rather than non-final) backing fields for classes? I've looked through the language specification and searched the web but can't find any definitive answers. (In comparison the @scala.volatile annotation is documented to mark a field as volatile)

• Can backslash be encoded correctly in URL with URL rewrite?

  I am working on a ASP.NET MVC2 project. The problem is when a string which would be rewritten into URL that contains special character such as backslash or question mark. That will make URL wrong, even I have encoded it before. For example: 1. I have a product id "p001/2-2". 2. I encoded it into "p001%252f2-2" 3. The URL http://domain.com/ProductView/p001%252f2-2 will response HTTP Error 400 - Bad Request. How can I get it correct?

• Find out 20th, 30th, nth prime number. (I'm getting 20th but not 30th?) [Python]

  The question is to find the 1000th prime number. I wrote the following python code for this. The problem is, I get the right answer for the 10th , 20th prime but after that each increment of 10 leaves me one off the mark. I can't catch the bug here :( count=1 #to keep count of prime numbers primes=() #tuple to hold primes candidate=3 #variable to test for primes while count<20: for x in range(2,candidate): if candidate%x==0: candidate=candidate+2 else : pass primes=primes+(candidate,) candidate=candidate+2 count=count+1 print primes print "20th prime is ", primes[-1] In case you're wondering, count is initialised as 1 because I am not testing for 2 as a prime number(I'm starting from 3) and candidate is being incremented by 2 because only odd numbers can be prime numbers. I know there are other ways of solving this problem, such as the prime number theorem but I wanna know what's wrong with this approach. Also if there are any optimisations you have in mind, please suggest. Thank You

• How to version MVC JavaScript includes

  I'm working with someone else's code, so I don't know the whole picture, and I don't even know MVC that well, but here's the problem... In Site.Master there's a <%= Html.IncludeJs("ProductPartial")%> which produces this line in the final mark-up <script type="text/javascript" src="/Scripts/release/ProductPartial.js"></script> I made some changes in the JS file, but the old one is obviously cached by the browser, so the changes won't show up until the user refreshes. The usual workaround is to add a version tag at the end of the script source path, but I'm not sure how to do that in this case. Any suggestions?

  I'm working on Rails 3.0.0.beta2, following Advanced Rails Recipes "Recipe #32, Mark locations on a Google Map" and I hit a road block. The following code is returning a "ActiveSupport::JSON::Encoding::CircularReferenceError" "object references itself" at line 3. This code represents the /layouts/maps.html.erb file <% if @maps -%> <script type="text/javascript"> var maps = <%= @maps.to_json %>; </script> <% end -%> This is my first attempt at rendering JSON, and I don't know how to debug this problem. I'm interested in creating my own website, or possibly just a stand alone windows program for tracking my finances in ASP.NET or C#.NET. I'm assuming the answer is no, but is there any way that a personal developer can download transactions from financial websites like these? I know once you login to most financial sites you can download a CSV or Quicken file. Yet I really like how I can log-in to my Mint.com account and update all my accounts with one click.

I have an ajax-based search that should just trigger the search when actual characters are pressed like a-Z (upper and lowercase), numbers and maybe a questionmark, a dash(hyphen), and an exclamation mark. Also the spacebar should be enabled. Otherwise the ajax search would be triggered as well if the shift-, option, or control-key, is pressed. What's the easiest regex pattern to understand here? thank you for your help

• Sanitize Content: removing markup from Amazon's content

  I'm using Amazon Web Service to get product descriptions of various items. The problem is that Amazon's content contains mark up that is sometimes destructive to the layout of my web page (e.g. unclosed DIVs, etc.). I want to sanitize the content I get from Amazon. My solution would be to do the following (my initial list so far): Remove unnecessary tags such as div, span, etc. while keeping tags like p, ul, ol, etc. Remove all attributes from all the tags (e.g. seems like there are style attributes in some of the tags) Remove excess white space (e.g. multiple spaces, carriage returns, new lines, tabs, etc.) Etc. Before I go off trying to build my solution, I'm wondering if anyone has a better idea (or an already existing solution). Thanks.

• Truncate a UTF-8 string to fit a given byte count in PHP

  Say we have a UTF-8 string $s and we need to shorten it so it can be stored in N bytes. Blindly truncating it to N bytes could mess it up. But decoding it to find the character boundaries is a drag. Is there a tidy way? [Edit 20100414] In addition to S.Mark’s answer: mb_strcut(), I recently found another function to do the job: grapheme_extract($s, $n, GRAPHEME_EXTR_MAXBYTES); from the intl extension. Since intl is an ICU wrapper, I have a lot of confidence in it.

• WiX: Extracting Binary-string in Custom Action yields string like "???good data"

  I just found a weird behaviour when attempting to extract a string from the Binary-table in the MSI. I have a file containing "Hello world", the data I get is "???Hello world". (Literary question mark.) Is this as intended? Will it always be exactly 3 characters in the beginning?   hellow all, in xcode whenever we load a mapview ,it automaticallay shows the current user location right. In my case i am showing another location on map ,such that the map loads the current location and zoomed to the location i have given .. but, the current location point was not showing (the blue one which comes automaticay..). i have given mapView.showCurrentLocation=TRUE; but its not showing . so could any one tells the way it works and it should say the current location mark and then zoomed to the point i have given. • Checking COM Port Availability in C#

  Hello. My C# application populates a comboBox with the COM ports found on the system. I would like the mark the COM ports that are in use as such. I know that I can use try / catch blocks to attempt to open every COM port, but I was wondering if there is a more graceful way to do this. Perhaps using a WMI query?   Hi, I have been looking into HTML5 and CSS3 and have been liking it quite a lot. Got around the modernizr API, but am stuck at one point, and that leads to further confusions: How will I write a code that caters to the situation of non-compatibility between browsers ? This leads to the following confusions: if I write the doctype as <!DOCTYPE HTML> and my page is accessed in IE6, then ho IE6 will handle the page? If I try to include <video> tag and the page is again accessed by IE6/IE7IE8 (which don't support this tag), Then how am I supposed to be rolling back to flash for them?   I'm trying to create a menu tree in drupal like this: - term 1 node 1 node 2 - sub-term 1 node 3 node 4 + sub-term 2 - sub-term 3 node 5 - sub-sub-term 1 node 6 + term 2 etc. (Sub-term 2 and term 2 are toggled closed.) Some requirements: Output this using something like JQuery Menu to get an interactive tree Filter the nodes by cck type Filter the nodes by cck field Only have terms with nodes or other active terms in them show up Mark the current node as such, and automatically open the tree to that point Do I have to write this myself, or are there a combination of modules that can do it? I've got Advanced Taxonomy Blocks, which is pretty close, but it doesn't list the nodes.

• Subversion has --record-only for merges, how do I do the same in Git ?

  I have a repo where 'master' is going in a certain direction, and a second branch 'foo' is going to be divergent for a couple of commits, then track all subsequent changes to 'master' after that. This is all by choice of course. In Subversion you could do a --record-only merge to mark things as "merge has happened" even though no actual changes were committed. i.e. this change the merge-tracking numbers in properties attached to directories in the target branch. I have had a play with.. git merge --no-commit master .. as something I may be able to tinker with before I do the commit, but it is making a hell of a mess of the target branch for part of the change in question (rename followed by delete). There must be an easier way.. ? Paul

  Hi, I would like to do something like this in my application layout: %title= "#{yield(:sub_title)} - Page Name" and in a real view - content_for :sub_title do Übersicht # I tried &Uuml;bersicht, != "&Uuml;bersicht" and a bunch of other methods what happens is, I either get the black pound with the question mark in it - wrong encoding or the raw string (&UumI;bersicht). Does anyone know a way how to get this to work? Another requirement is that I'd like to show user generated content in the title and this content may or may not have umlauts in it.   As a software developer one sometimes gets feature requests that seem to be in some kind of morally grey area. Sometimes one can deflect them, or implement them in a way that feels less 'evil' - sometimes - on reflection - while the feature request 'feels' wrong theres no identifiable part of it that actually causes harm. Sometimes one feels a feature is totally innocent but various anti virus products start tagging one as malware. For example - I personally consider EULAs to (a) hopefully be unenforceable and (b) a means by which rights are REMOVED from consumers. However Anti Virus scanners frequently mark as malware any kind of download agent that does not display a EULA. Which to me is the result of a curious kind of double think. What I want to know is - are there any online (or offline) resources that cover evil software development practices? How can I know if a software practice that I consider dodgy is in fact evil enough to consider fighting?

• How to change order in ordered+persisted collection?

  I just need to change order of items in a (previously persisted) ordered collection... I tried simply passing the re-arranged collection to a setter: after committing a transaction the collection is gone. Then I tried to clear() the existing collection and addAll() afterwards: clear() makes persistent manager to mark all the elements as deleted. (But obviously I would like to be able to work with the collection items in the very transaction.) (The collection is not in a default fetch group, so I tried the above also with the named fetch group added into the fetch plan. No luck.) This must be the most stupid question, but I ran out of ideas and I'm stuck here two days already. I swear I googled. :(

• Limit the number of cron jobs runnging a PHP script

  I have a daily cron job that grabs 10 users at a time and does a bunch of stuff with them. There are 1000's of users that are part of that process every day. I don't want the cron jobs to overlap as they are heavy on server load. They call stuff from various APIs so I have timeouts and slow data fetching to contend with. I've tried using a flag to mark a cron job as running, but it's not reliable enough as some PHP scripts may time out or fail in various ways. Is there a good way to stop a cron job from calling the PHP script multiple times, or controlling the number of times it is called, so there are only 3 instances for example? I'd prefer a solution in the PHP if possible. Any ideas? At the moment I'm storing the flag as a value in a database, is using a lock type file any better as in here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/851872/does-a-cron-job-kill-last-cron-execution ?

• Should I use the Model-View-ViewModel (MVVM) pattern in Silverlight projects?

  One challenge with Silverlight controls is that when properties are bound to code, they're no longer really editable in Blend. For example, if you've got a ListView that's populated from a data feed, there are no elements visible when you edit the control in Blend. I've heard that the MVVM pattern, originated by the WPF development community, can also help with keeping Silverlight controls "blendable".   Hi guys, I am developing some small little application that sits on the screen and on top of all window and flies around the screen, could be a bird or a butterfly or a fish. But I have a little bit of problem. How do I redraw the background without my images included? or how do I copy the background (not the wallpaper) behind my form with image? is it possible to have a custom shaped form also? currently, the app looks like this the 2nd image with X is what I currently have (it has some sort of tearing) and it's supposed to be the 1st one with check mark.
