• installing simplejson on the google appengine

  Super nub question time! I am trying to use simplejson on the google appengine. In a terminal on my machine I have simplejson installed and working. But my when I try to import it in a script running on the appengine I get an error saying no such library exists. If open the interactive console on my machine (from the link on http://localhost:8080/_ah/admin) and type "import simplejson" I get: Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/chris/google_appengine/google/appengine/ext/admin/init.py", line 210, in post exec(compiled_code, globals()) File "", line 1, in ImportError: No module named simplejson Any thoughts?

• Problem with truncation of floating point values in DBSlayer.

  When I run a query through DBslayer http://code.nytimes.com/projects/dbslayer the floating point results are truncated to a total of six digits (plus decimal point and negative sign when needed). { ... "lat":52.2228,"lng":-2.19906, ... } When I run the same query in MySQL, the results are as expected. | 52.22280884 | -2.19906425 | Firstly, am I correct in identifying DBSlayer as the cause of this effect? • Flex: Why does setting scaleX/Y in mxml effect the components size but setting it in actionscript do

  Hi, I'm playing around with the scaleX/Y in the canvas tag and have noticed some strange behaviour. When I set scale in in mxml the width and height of the canvas are adjusted accordingly. For example if I have a canvas like this: <mx:Canvas width="1000" height="1000" scaleX="0.1" scaleY="0.1" /> The canvas now appears on screen to have a width and height of 100 and if inside my creationComplete callback I check the width and height property they are indeed 100. But if I do exactly the same thing except I set the scaleX/Y property from actionscript the canvas on screen appears to have a width and height of 100 as expected, but when I check the width and height property of the canvas they are still at the previous values of 1000. Could anyone help me understand what is going on and also tell me if there is any method that will refresh the width and height values so that they are correct? Thanks, Chris

• Javascript/iframe/embed/object question

  OK, so here is my issue. I'm building a system which will allow people to embed lists of links on their pages. When the link is clicked, i'd like to use something like Lightview or Lightwindow to open it up over the whole window, not just in the iframe. I don't have access to the page that the user will be embedding this object into. Everything I've tried so far tells me that I can't open anything over the parent window, since I don't have access to it from the iframe or object, javacript security issue. However, I've seen sites that do that kind of overlay. so it must be possible. If anyone can point me to any resources that could help, that would be great. if it matters, i'm using Ruby on Rails... • Multiple key/value pairs in HTTP POST where key is the same name

  I'm working on an API that accepts data from remote clients, some of which where the key in an HTTP POST almost functions as an array. In english what this means is say I have a resource on my server called "class". A class in this sense, is the type a student sits in and a teacher educates in. When the user submits an HTTP POST to create a new class for their application, a lot of the key value pairs look like: student_name: Bob Smith student_name: Jane Smith student_name: Chris Smith What's the best way to handle this on both the client side (let's say the client is cURL or ActiveResource, whatever..) and what's a decent way of handling this on the server-side if my server is a Ruby on Rails app? Need a way to allow for multiple keys with the same name and without any namespace clashing or loss of data.

• iOS4.2: TouchBegan does not draw more then one circle per sensed touch

  Hi all, quick question (which might be a no-brainer for most here) :) My code below should draw a circle for every time touch that is recognised but although more than ones touches are sensed only one circle will drawn up at a time. Can anyone see any obvious issues? This method sits in the XYZViewControler.m class. TouchPoint.m is the class that defines the circle. Thanks a bundle for your help and redirects. • Another answer to the CAPTCHA problem?

  Most sites at least employ server access log checking and banning along with some kind of bot prevention measure like a CAPTCHA (those messed-up text images). The problem with CAPTCHAs is that they poss a threat to the user experience. Luckily they now come with user friendly features like refresh and audio versions. Anyway, like linux vs windows, it isn't worth the time of a spammer to customize and/or build a script to handle a custom CAPTCHA example that only pertains to one site. Therefore, I was wondering if there might be better ways to handle the whole CAPTCHA thing. In A Better CAPTCHA Peter Bromberg mentions that one way would be to convert the image to HTML and display it embedded in the page. On http://shiflett.org/ Chris simply asks users to type his name into an input. Examples like this are ways to simplifying the CAPTCHA experience while decreasing the value for spammers. Does anyone know of more good examples I could use or see any problem with the embedded image idea?

• bad performance from too many caught errors?

  I have a large project in C# (.NET 2.0) which contains very large chunks of code generated by SubSonic. Is a try-catch like this causing a horrible performance hit? for (int x = 0; x < identifiers.Count; x++) {decimal target = 0; try { target = Convert.ToDecimal(assets[x + identifiers.Count * 2]); // target % } catch { targetEmpty = true; }} What is happening is if the given field that is being passed in is not something that can be converted to a decimal it sets a flag which is then used further along in the record to determine something else. The problem is that the application is literally throwing 10s of thousands of exceptions as I am parsing through 30k records. The process as a whole takes almost 10 minutes for everything and my overall task is to improve that time some and this seemed like easy hanging fruit if its a bad design idea. Any thoughts would be helpful (be kind, its been a miserable day) thanks, Chris

  Hello, I'm developing a Adobe AIR application using Flash Builder 4. This app needs to access a remote PHP service which is being hosted on a remote web server. I am having troubles figuring out how to add a PHP data service which uses a remote service. I can add the PHP data service in Flash Builder as a service hosted on localhost, but given that this will not be feasible when the application is deployed, will not work. Does anyone know how to connect a Flash Builder (Flex) project to a remote PHP data service? Thanks, Chris

• Control Philips Living Colors using PC

  Hi guys, is there a way (hardware/software-combination) that I can use to control one or more "Philips Living Colors" lamps using a PC - e.g. a USB-stick that acts as the "remote". This way i could control the lamp through software (e.g. a web-app - over iPhone / remotely) or even create what Philips builds into some of their TVs and calls "ambilight" (graphics driver detecting the main color to control the lamp). I guess this is more like a hardware than a software question - but I couldn't find anything about this online and I'm sure not to be the first to have come up with this idea right when I unpacked my LivingColors lamp yesterday ;) Any idea/hint is appreciated. -chris

  I've recently had a question about coledatetime java implementation, and Chris said, that the problem might lay in type conversions: cpp-float vs java-float (Or maybe cpp-date vs java-date. Not types, but..). Now I have several questions on this: Is there a table of comparison for java vs c++ types? If type conversions is the problem, in my situation (I have a db with OLEDate records, already created with some c++ program. I need to read and write to that db, so that the OLEDate field compatibility remained: my java code reads proper dates, and c++ program is not affected with what the java program wrote to the db.), what would you do: Use COleDateTime to retrieve the date with JNI? Create your own implementation at all costs (using broader types, or anything else)? Is there anything, I'm missing here?

  I need to parse JavaDoc (documentation) comment syntax with Delphi 7. It is well known in the java world as "JavaDoc", but I'm actually doing this for PHP, ie, parsing JavaDoc in some PHP code. Call it PHPDoc if you want to. To see how these comments work, you can see RAD IDEs like NetBeans etc. Example of JavaDoc for addition function: /** * Adds to numbers together. * @param integer $a The first number. * @param integer $b The second number. * @return integer The resulting number. */ function add($a,$b){ return $a+$b; } Please note that the parser need not be full, ie, parsing all of the PHP code.   Hi, I'm looking for the most basic solution to create multiple indexes on a Java Collection. Required functionality: When a Value is removed, all index entries associated with that value must be removed. Index lookup must be faster than linear search (at least as fast as a TreeMap). Side conditions: It should ideally work with JavaSE (6.0) alone - no extra libraries, if possible. If necessary, then only small (not something like Lucene), common and well tested libraries. No database! Of course, I could write a class that manages multiple Maps myself. But I'd like to know, if it can be done without - while still getting a simple usage similar to using a single indexed java.util.Map. Thanks, Chris

• How do I make a sql query where fields are the result of a different query?

  I have two tables, the first is like this: f1 | f2 | f3 | f4 ----------------- data.... the second contains info about the fields of the first: field | info ------------ f1 a f2 b f3 a etc. I would like to query the first table selecting the fields with a query on the second. So, for example, I might want to get data for fields where info is equal to "a", thus I would do "select f1, f3 from first_table". How do I do this programmatically?   Hi, I have four models: Customer, QueueRed, QueueBlue, QueueGreen. The Queue models have a one to many relationship with customers A customer must always be in a queue A customer can only be in one queue at a time A customer can change queues We must be able to find out the customers current position in their respective queue In an object model the queues would just have an array property containing customers, but ActiveRecord doesn't have arrays. In a DB I would probably create some extra tables just to handle the order of the stories in the queue. My question is what it the best way to model the relationship in ActiveRecord? Obviously there are many ways this could be done, but what is the best or the most in line with how ActiveRecord should be used? Cheers, Chris

  I'm auditing my site design based on the excellent Essential PHP Security by Chris Shiflett. One of the recommendations I'd like to adopt is moving all possible files out of webroot, this includes includes. Doing so on my shared host is simple enough, but I'm wondering how people handle this on their development testbeds? Currently I've got an XAMPP installation configured so that localhost/mysite/ matches up with D:\mysite\ in which includes are stored at D:\mysite\includes\ In order to keep include paths accurate, I'm guess I need to replicate the server's path on my local disk? Something like D:\mysite\public_html\ Is there a better way?

• A good F# codebase to learn from

  Hi all, I've been teaching myself F# for a while now. I've read Programming F# by Chris Smith (great book) and I've written a few small scripts for getting the job done here and there. But IMO the best way to learn a new programming language—and more importantly, the idioms that come with it—is to read a good open source codebase written in that language. Naturally, writing code in that language is crucial, but in the beginning, you're basically struggling with your own ignorance about how things should be done. You could perform certain tasks one way or the other, but it takes experience to realize the flaws and virtues of each. Even after you've gotten a firm grasp of how things work, reading the code of people who have an even firmer one helps a great deal. Most would agree that the most insightful parts of any learn-a-programming-language book are the code examples, and reading a well-written open source codebase is the next level of that. So are there any out there for F#?

  Can dirtiness of pages of a (non-shared) mmap be accessed from userspace under linux 2.6.30+? Platform-specific hacks and kludges welcome. Ideally, I'm looking for an array of bits, one per page (4kB?) of the mmap'ed region, which are set if that page has been written to since the region was mmap'ed. • The Wheel Invention - Beneficial For Learning?

  Hello, Chris Coyier of css-tricks.com has written a good article titled Regarding Wheel Invention. In a paragraph he says: On the “reinventing” side, you benefit from complete control and learning from the process. And on the very next line he says: On the other side, you benefit from speed, reliability, and familiarity. Also often at odds are time spent and cost. He is right in both statements I think. I really like his first statement. I do actually sometimes re-invent the wheel to learn more and gain complete control over what I am inventing. I wonder why people are so much against that or rather biased. Isn't there the benefit of learning and getting complete control or probably some other benefits too. I would love to see what you have to say about this.

  Let's suppose you have this class: class A { public: A () {} A (double val) : m_val(val) {} ~A () {} private: double m_val; }; Once I create an instance of A, how can I check if m_val has been initialized/defined? Put it in other words, is there a way to know if m_val has been initialized/defined or not? Something along the lines of the defined operator in Python, I suppose. (But correct me if I'm wrong.) I thought of modifying the class and the c-tors the following way: class A { public: A () : defined(false) {} A (double val) : m_val(val), defined(true) {} ~A () {} private: double m_val; bool defined; }; How do you rate this solution? • App Engine - Save response from an API in the data store as file (blob)

  Hi there, I'm banging my head against the wall with this one: What I want to do is store a file that is returned from an API in the data store as a blob. Here is the code that I use on my local machine (which of course works due to an existing file system): client.convertHtml(html, open('html.pdf', 'wb')) Since I cannot write to a file on App Engine I tried several ways to store the response, without success. Any hints on how to do this? I was trying to do it with StringIO and managed to store the response but then weren't able to store it as a blob in the data store. Thanks, Chris

  Hello. I want to use an embed an sqlite database into an existing tcl application (Migrate from flat-file). Currently; our tcl interpreter is run from a network location; /bin/tclsh8.3 I do have an nfs $PATH for executables set for all users already; I am assuming I can place a standalone sqlite3 executible there; though I have been not found an easy way to compile a local lib independent sqlite yet... (all linux clients, running anything from red hat 9 to ubuntu 10.04) Anyone able to poke me in the right direction in building an sqlite3 standalone binary I can use in my nfs tcl install?   I'm sure I've done this in another solution, but I can't seem to find any solution as to do it again and wondered if anyone can help me... This is my WebAPI code: public class WebController : ApiController { public void Get(string telephone, string postcode, List<Client> clients) { } } And, calling this from jQuery: function Client(name, age) { this.Name = name; this.Age = age; } var Clients = []; Clients.push(new Client("Chris", 27)); $.ajax({ url: "/api/Web/", data: { telephone: "999", postcode: "xxx xxx", clients: Clients } }); But the "clients" object always comes back as null. I've also tried JSON.stringify(Clients), and this is the same result. Can anyone see anything obvious I'm missing here?
