• Retlang: What is the best way to unsubscribe from a channel?

  I'm not sure what is the best way to unsubscribe from a channel when using Retlang. When you subscribe by calling ISubscriber<T>::Subscribe(...) you are returned an IUnsubscriber. This interface has no methods. Going up a level, IChannel<T> also does not have any methods. The only thing I can think of is casting an ISubscriber<T> to the concrete Channel<T> and calling its Unsubscribe() method or adding an Unsubscribe() method to ISubscriber<T>. I'm just curious if anyone knows what they had in mind before I modify the code.

• Notepad++ like "multi editing" in VIM?

  I'm switching from Notepad++ to VIM as main text editor. Notepad++ can have multiple cursors by holding down ctrl and clicking anywhere in the text, so if you type, the text appears in multiple locations. Is it possible in vim? Something like insert after selecting multiple rows in visual mode, but with the possibility to have cursors anywhere in the text. It's a feature I rarely use, also it's quite easily avoidable, I'm just curious, since its the only one I could't find a replacement for in vim yet.

  dear All. I'm using integer PKs in some tables of mysql database. Before input from PHP script, I am doing some sanitizing, which includes intval($id) and $mysqli-real_escape_string(). The queries are quite simple insert into `tblproducts`(`supplier_id`,`description`) values('$supplier_id','$description') In this example, $description goes through real_escape_string(), while $supplier_id only being intval()'ed. I'm just curious, if there're any situations, when I need to apply both intval and real_escape_string to integer I'm inserting into DB? So basically do I really need to use? $supplier_id = intval($mysqli->real_escape_string($supplier_id)); Thank you.

  In an attempt to better learn Rails and I'm building a simple Blackjack game, but I'm running into a problem of storing the variable. I understand how to store user-genereated data into the db using form_for, but I'm struggling to create a random number and put it in the db. @hand = rand(9) + 2 I have "hand" as a field in my db, just curious how to store this random number. • python open does not create file if it doesnt exist

  I am using Python. What is the best way to open a file in rw if it exists, or if it does not, then create it and open it in rw? From what i read, file = open('myfile.dat', 'rw') should do this, no? it is not working for me (python 2.6.2) and im wondering if it is a version problem, or not supposed to work like that or what. The bottom line is, i just need a solution for the problem. I am curious about the other stuff, but all i need is a nice way to do the opening part. thanks in advance

• Started with a local git repo now I want to push my changes to a remote server

  Hi, I started a new project and created a local git repo with "git init" and now I have a few branches and everything works great. However since my webhosting company offers git hosting (if you're curious https://support.eapps.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=203) I'd like to push my entire repo to their servers to have a backup in the cloud in case something bad happens to my local repo. • How to use rvm (ruby version manager) with root account?

  The whole point of rvm is to be able to install multiple rubies and access them from a user account. What do you do when you need to access any of those rubies from root? Or use gems installed in one of those rvms? Is there an elegant (or even hackish) way to use these I haven't considered? My guess is that I should just add it to my PATH, but I'm curious if anyone has come up with a better idea. I'd rather not install rvm just for the root account and duplicate everything.

• Alternatives to FastDateFormat for efficient date parsing?

  Well aware of performance and thread issues with SimpleDateFormat, I decided to go with FastDateFormat, until I realized that FastDateFormat is for formatting only, no parsing! Is there an alternative to FastDateFormat, that is ready to use out of the box and much faster than SimpleDateFormat? I believe FastDateFormat is one of the faster ones, so anything that is about as fast would do. Just curious , any idea why FastDateFormat does not support parsing? Doesn't it seriously limit its use? Thanks! EDIT Holy crap, I just left a comment and that literally REMOVED a good answer! This appears a serious bug on stackoverflow!

  What is the best way to share a virtual server with friends? More precisely, I have the following assets: A virtual private server (Debian Lenny) with root access for myself, running... SSH apache2 mysql Some unused disk space Some friends in need of hosting The problem I would now like to do the following: Hosting one or several domains per friend My friends should have full access to their domains, including running PHP scripts, for example My friends should not be able to poke around in other directories The security of my server should not be compromised by faulty PHP scripts To clarify: I do trust my friends in the sense that they are not trying to do something evil with their access. I just do not trust the programs they are going to run. So, what are your recommendations for establishing such a scenario? Partial solution I already came up with the following plan: Add chrooted SSH users for my friends Add Apache vhosts per user (point the directories to subdirectories of the homedirectories, i.e. /home/alice/example.com, /home/bob/example.net, etc. But how can I enforce a chroot-like environment for the scripts they are running within these vhosts? Any pointers would be appreciated.

  Hello, The question Is it possible to ask SSIS to cast a value and return NULL in case the cast is not allowed instead of throwing an error ? My environment I'm using Visual Studio 2005 and Sql Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003. The general context Just in case you're curious, here is my use case. I have to store data coming from somewhere in a generic table (key/value structure with history) witch contains some sort of value that can be strings, numbers or dates. The structure is something like this : table Values { Id int, Date datetime, -- for history Key nvarchar(50) not null, Value nvarchar(50), DateValue datetime, NumberValue numeric(19,9) } I want to put the raw value in the Value column and try to put the same value in the DateValue column when i'm able to cast it to Datetime in the NumberValue column when i'm able to cast it to a number Those two typed columns would make all sort of aggregation and manipulation much easier and faster later.   I'm doing a windows form and would like an audit task to happen every 30 seconds. This audit is essentially checking a series of services on remote computers and reporting back into a richtextbox the status. Current I have this running in an endless background thread and using an invoker to update the richtextbox in the main form. Is this best practice? If I made an endless loop in my main form that would prevent any of my buttons from working, correct? I'm just curious if every time I want to create a periodic audit check I have to create a new thread which checks the status or file or what have you?

  Is there a HTTP status code to tell Google (and others) to go away, index me again later? Basically, one that semantically tells clients that the site is down for maintenance? The ones I have considered are 304 => Not modified 307 => Temporary redirect 410 => Gone 503 => Service Unavailable I'm leaning towards the last one, but was just curious as to which one was proper choice.   I am currently developing a script in PHP to fetch webpages. The fact is that by doing so, I occasionally do too much requests to a particular website. In order to control any overflow, I would like to keep trace of how many requests have been done in the last hour or so for each domain. It doesn't need to be perfect, just a good estimate. I doesn't have access to a database, except sqlite2. I would really like something really simple because there will typically be a lot of updates, which is kind of heavy for a sqlite database. If no one has a magical solution, I'll go for sqlite, but I was curious what you can come up with Thank you very much

  I'm building a UserControl in WPF. The control has two properties, Title and Description, that I'd like to bind to two textblocks. Seems real straightforward, and I got it working, but I'm curious about something. To get it to work I had to add this code: void CommandBlock_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { this.DataContext = this; } My bindings look like this: <TextBlock Text="{Binding Title}" Width="100" ... /> <TextBlock Text="{Binding Description}" Width="100" ... /> What I'm wondering is how come I couldn't get it to work without the this.DataContext = this; and instead use DataContext="{Binding RelativeSource={RelativeSource Self}}" (in the UserControl element of the markup)? I'm sure I'm missing something about DataContexts but don't know what.

  This is a Canonical Question about File Permissions on a Linux web server. I have a Linux web server running Apache2 that hosts several websites. Each website has its own folder in /var/www/. /var/www/contoso.com/ /var/www/contoso.net/ /var/www/fabrikam.com/ The base directory /var/www/ is owned by root:root. Apache is running as www-data:www-data. The Fabrikam website is maintained by two developers, Alice and Bob. Both Contoso websites are maintained by one developer, Eve. All websites allow users to upload images. If a website is compromised, the impact should be as limited as possible. I want to know the best way to set up permissions so that Apache can serve the content, the website is secure from attacks, and the developers can still make changes. One of the websites is structured like this: /var/www/fabrikam.com /cache /modules /styles /uploads /index.php How should the permissions be set on these directories and files? I read somewhere that you should never use 777 permissions on a website, but I don't understand what problems that could cause. During busy periods, the website automatically caches some pages and stores the results in the cache folder. All of the content submitted by website visitors is saved to the uploads folder.

• Image as a background of a form in Delphi

  I'm using Delphi 2006. I have a few PNG images with transparencies and I have to create a GUI using them (top bar, left panel...). The images have different aligns properties. One of the images is the background of the form. The problem here is that I can't align it as alClient because it only occupies the rectangular zone that the other images have left, showing the naked canvas in their transparent zones. What I need is that the background image is put behind all the other images and taking all the canvas size. Is there anyway to do this? I know I can do this writting some logic in the OnResize event of the form but I was just curious if I was missing something. Thanks.

  We do maintenence on a number of systems. I'm finally in a place where I'm teh fucking boss for once, and have to design a large system that will have a long maintenance contract. There's a couple of tasks I find myself always repeating: 1) similar tasks for users with JS and those without 2) similar things for contents and rss/atom feeds, etc. To combat these I will need appropriate handling of assets (think JS files, CSS, themes/templates, etc.), excellent auth/user systems, javascript/ajax forethought, appropriate model setups. Codeigniter fails on many of these. Basically, with enough time I could build this system with Zend, but I'm curious what else is out there as Zend is also kind of a heavy-weight. We need something that is Rapid but maintainable, CodeIgniter is not maintainable. We will have a lot of AJAX APIs in place for the design team to play with. At first I thought jQuery was cool, but now I'm looking at Dojo.

  While reading Wikipedia's page on decltype, I was curious about the statement, Its [decltype's] primary intended use is in generic programming, where it is often difficult, or even impossible, to name types that depend on template parameters. While I can understand the difficulty part of that statement, what is an example where there is a need to name a type that cannot be named under C++03? EDIT: My point is that since everything in C++ has a declaration of types. Why would there ever be a case where it is impossible to name a type? Furthermore, aren't trait classes designed to yield type informations? Could trait classes be an alternative to decltype?

I am using source control since several years for multiple projects using different systems (svn, hg, git) and I learned how to improve my messages by following guidelines etc. But as far as I can remember I never ever had a look at them afterwards. So ... how do you profit from your own commit messages? When I need to go back because I smashed something and need a fresh start, I usually just go back to the latest "node" (where I started or merged a branch). Do I write those messages just for people monitoring the project who are curious what is going on? Regards

  I'm in the process of porting a Windows application to OS X (we wrote it in Java so most of the code is portable), but what I'm currently unsure of is how to add context menu items in the Finder window when the user right clicks on an item (i.e. I wish to add some items to the the menu that has "Open" "Open with" , "Get Info", etc... when the user right clicks). Most of the articles I've found deal specifically with Windows (I've searched for "context menus" and "shell extension", but I believe I may be searching the wrong terms), so I'm curious as to how to go about adding this in Mac or what literature I should be reading.
