• How to enlarge a .PDF document to better show it in a Kindle 6"?

  I have a kindle 6". The problem is that I often read pdf files that are technical, therefore, it doesn't get converted very well to kindle's native format (for example, code blocks get messed, and things like that). When I view the pdf page, it's very small to read easily, so I have to rotate the screen to a horizontal position in order to see it better, but my page get divided. But some documents would be easy to read in vertical position if I had the chance to enlarge the font size a little bit in a external pdf editor, therefore enabling the reading in the vertical orientation. Has anybody had the same situation? Is there a solution for that?

  I'm looking for a way to record live video with the specific requirement of having each frame georeferenced with GPS. Right now I'm using a normal video camera with a PDA+GPS that records the position, but it's difficult to sync both of these plus sometimes I've forgotten to turn the PDA+GPS or it has failed for some reason and all my video has been useless. Using google I found that about two years ago a company named Seero produced such video cameras and software, but apparently the domain doesn't exist any more and I only find references of other pages mentioning it. Does somebody know of any other product? I need to record this video in HD and have some way to export to Google Maps or other GIS software the positions of the frames in a way that I can click on the map and see what was being recorded in the video at that point. The precission of the GPS tracking is good enough as one position per second, intermediate frames of the video stream can be interpolated.

  I switch monitors really often: At work I have a very poor computer, and gpu too, which is bad at keeping its configuration, resolution and monitor position between each reboot. Both monitor are different size and resolution. When doing that I often have applications that were on one of the monitors that remember their last position opened... so now they are unseen, at screen coordinates I cannot access. I know there is a shortcut that can access the move functionnality of a window. Could you remind it to me. Do you have other trick to center all opened windows into the visible screens ?

• How do I capture my second monitor using avconv?

  With this command: avconv -f x11grab -s 2560x1440 -i :0.0 I can stream video from my main monitor. I also have a second, 1080p monitor on which I do my gaming. I want to stream from that monitor. This doesn't work: avconv -f x11grab -s 1920x1080 -i :0.1 I assume I have to use -i :0.0 and somehow specify that it should capture 1920x1080 pixels from X position 2560 and Y position 0. My gaming monitor is placed to the right of my main monitor. Unfortunately the man page for avconv is miles long, so I haven't had any luck figuring this out on my own. I have tried Using -vf with crop like this: -vcodec libx264 ... -vf "crop=$IN_WIDTH:$IN_HEIGHT:2560:360" But that only displayed 1080p video from the top left corner of my main display.

• What does this WinImage Error Mean?

  Hi, I am using WinImage (version 8.0) on Windows XP SP3 to create a VHD File from my Hard Drive, however, everytime I try to, everytime it says: "I/O error in reading data on position 000000007cd40000:00010000. Error 23: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)." with the options "Abort", "Retry", "Skip" & "Skip All". Everytime I try "Retry" the message comes, if I click skip another message comes up (same as above, except the data position). I have run "CHKDSK /F /R" several times, but the error always appears. What is wrong? Can I safely skip the Errors? Is there anything I can do to fix the error?

  I am in the process of migrating 2 DB servers (Master & Slave) to two new DB Servers (Master and Slave) DB1 - Master (production) DB2 - Slave (production) DB3 - New Master DB4 - New Slave Currently I have the replication set up as: DB1 -> DB2 DB3 -> DB4 To get the production data replicated to the new servers, I'd like to get it "daisy chained" so that it looks like this: DB1 -> DB2 -> DB3 -> DB4 Is this possible?   So i have a computer that has 2 hard drives and i installed Ubuntu server on it. I used LVM to connect the two. So i tried to put windows back on it but it failed because it said it couldn't position the drive and then when i booted again the OS couldn't be found. So i booted it with the Ubuntu setup disc but now when it goes to partition it says that the position can not be modified because its already in use. I am asking if there is a way i can just remove everything and start fresh?

• Moving windows using keyboard...faster?

  I like using keyboard shortcuts because it's faster as it does not force me to move my hands off the keyboard. In Windows I can use them to move windows around desktop: Press Alt+Space to open common windows menu Press M to choose "Move" command Navigate window position by cursor keys Confirm new position with Enter Additionally, to achieve better accuracy, I can hold Ctrl while navigating. Now the problem is that the normal "step" when moving is about 20px, and my desktop is quite large, so "walking" all the way across takes quite a long time. This kind of defeats the purpose of using keyboard for these tasks. Is it possible to change size of this step so that takes less steps to walk the same distance? (I imagine a hidden setting in Windows registry...?) I tried holding Alt while navigating, but it does not seem to have influence on speed.

  I have a long text on powerpoint slide. Instead of separating it on multiple slides, I made an animation that moves it up using animation path, so that text hidden at bottom appears while text on top goes off screen. However, I need more move animations to reaveal more text (the text takes more than 2 screens). This means, I need two (or more) animation paths (of the same length) and I want them to move obejct from position, where the last path has left it. • Go Directly to Desktop Mode in Windows 8 on Login (Without Installing Extra Software)

  A lot of people are unhappy with being forced to interact with the new Start Screen in Windows 8 first thing once they have logged into their system. But their is a quick and simple work-around to go directly to Desktop Mode that does not require installing extra software or making changes to your system. The first thing that you will need to do is make sure that the Desktop Tile is in the left uppermost position on the Start Screen as seen here. Once the tile has been moved to that position you will need to restart/reboot your system. Once your system has restarted and you are back at the Login Screen, type in your password but do NOT click on the Arrow Button or tap the Enter Key. Instead of tapping the Enter Key simply press down on it and hold it down until you see the regular desktop. Keep in mind that you may see the Start Screen become visible for just a short moment as it is being bypassed for the desktop. So I spent my time and wrote this tool. In addition, the tool has functional which can change position of windows (It is useful for laptops, you can move windows with hotkeys). And of course this tool can move windows between monitors. Hot keys can be customized. Interface in English. Now I don’t want to add new functionality, because now I’m using Windows 7 with all functions that this tool have. I wrote this tool on C# with .NET 3.5.   HR TMS provides enterprise talent management solutions for healthcare, retail and corporate customers, focusing on performance management, compensation management and succession planning. As the competency of nurses and other healthcare workers is critical, the government, via the Joint Commission (JCAHO), tightly monitors their performances. On a regular basis, accredited healthcare organizations are required to review employee performance using a complex set of position dependent job descriptions and competencies. Middlesex Hospital managed their performance reviews for 2500 employees manually with Excel spreadsheets. This was a labor intensive process that proved to be error prone and difficult to manage. Reviews were not always where they belonged and the job descriptions and competencies for healthcare workers were difficult to keep accurate and up to date. As a result, when the Joint Commission visited and requested to see specific review documentation, there was intense stress. Middlesex Hospital needed to automate their review process, pull in the position information from those spreadsheets and be able to deliver reviews online. Users needed to have online access to those reviews from a standard browser. Although the manual system had its issues, it did have the advantage of being very comprehensive and familiar to users. The decision was made to provide a web-based solution that leveraged the look and feel of those spreadsheets in order to insure user acceptance of the system and minimize the training needed. • 3D terrain map with Hexagon Grids

  I'm working on a hobby project (I'm a web/backend developer by day) and I want to create a 3D Tile (terrain) engine. I'm using XNA, but I can use MonoGame, OpenGL, or straight DirectX, so the answer does not have to be XNA specific. I'm more looking for some high level advice on how to approach this problem. I know about creating height maps and such, there are thousands of references out there on the net for that, this is a bit more specific. I'm more concerned with is the approach to get a 3D hexagon tile grid out of my terrain (since the terrain, and all 3d objects, are basically triangles). The first approach I thought about is to basically draw the triangles on the screen in the following order (blue numbers) to give me the triangles for terrain (black triangles) and then make hexes out of the triangles (red hex). This approach seems complicated to me since i'm basically having to draw 4 different types of triangles. The next approach I thought of was to use the existing triangles like I did for a square grid and get my hexes from 6 triangles as follows This seems like the easier approach to me since there are only 2 types of triangles (i would have to play with the heights and widths to get a "perfect" hexagon, but the idea is the same. So I'm looking for: 1) Any suggestions on which approach I should take, and why. 2) How would I translate mouse position to a hexagon grid position (especially when moving the camera around), for example in the second image if the mouse pointer were the green circle, how would I determine to highlight that hexagon and then translating that into grid coordinates (assuming it is 0,0)? 3) Any references, articles, books, etc - to get me going in the right direction. Note: I've done hex grid's and mouse-grid coordinate conversion before in 2d. looking for some pointers on how to do the same in 3d. The result I would like to achieve is something similar to this video.

• Does software architect/designer require more skills and intellectual than software engineer (implementation)?

  So I heard the positions for designing software and writing spec for developers to implement are higher and getting paid more. I think many companies are using the Software Engineering title to depict the person to implement software, which means using tools and technologies to write the actual code. I know that in order to be a software architecture, one needs to be good at implementation in order to have an architectural overview of a system using a set of specific technologies. This is different than I thought of a Software Engineer. My thinking is similar to the standard of IEEE: A software engineer is an engineer who is capable of going from requirement analysis until the software is deployed, based on the SWEBOK (IEEE). Just look at the table of content. The IEEE even has the certificate for Software Engineering, since ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) seems to not have an official qualification test for Software Engineer (although IEEE is a member of ABET). The two certificates are CSDA and CSDP. I intend to take on these two examination in the future to be qualified as a software engineer, although I am already working as one (Junior position). On a side note on the issues of Software Engineer, you can read the dicussion here: Just a Programmer and Just a Software Engineer. The information of ABET does not accredit Software Engineer is in "Just a Software Engineer". On the other hand, why is Programmer/Softwar Engineer who writes code considered a low level position? Suppose if two people have equal skills after the same years of experience, one becomes a software architect and one keeps focus on implementation aspect of Software Engineering (of course he also has design skill to compose a system, since he's a software engineer as well, but maybe less than the specialized software architect), how comes work from Software Engineer is less complicated than the Software Architect? In order to write great code with turn design into reality, it requires far greater skill than just understanding a particular language and a framework. I don't think the ones who wrote and contributing Linux OS are lower level job and easier than conceptual design and writing spec. Can someone enlighten me?

• How to implement curved movement while tracking the appropriate angle?

  I'm currently coding a 2D top-down car game which will be turn-based. And since it's turn-based, the cars won't be controlled directly (i.e. with a simple velocity vector that adjusts its angle when the player wants to turn), but instead it's movement path has to be planned beforehand, and then the car needs to follow the path when the turn ends (think Steambirds). This question has some interesting information, but its focus is on homing-missile behaviour, which I kinda had figured out, but doesn't really apply to my case, I think, since I need to show a preview of the path when the player is planning his turn, then have the car follow that path. In that same question, there's an excellent answer by Andrew Russel which mentions Equations of Motion and Bézier's Curve. Some of his other suggestions of implementation are specific to XNA though, so they don't help much (I'm using Marmalade SDK). If I assume Bézier's Curve as the solution of choice, I'm left with one specific problem: I'll have the car's position (the first endpoint) and the target/final position (the last endpoint), but what should I use as the control point (assuming a square/quadratic curve)? And whether I use Bézier's Curve or another parametric equation, I'd still be left with another issue: the car can't just follow the curve, it must turn (i.e. adjust its angle) accordingly. So how can I figure out which way the car should be pointing to at any given point in the curve?
