  Im developing desktop java application using maven. I got a *.properties file that I need to retrive during execution (src/resources/application.properties). The only thing comes to my mind is to use: private Properties applicationProperties; applicationProperties.load(new BufferedInputStream(new FileInputStream("src/resources/application.properties"))); This would work if I run my application directly from IDE. I want to to keep outpout hierarchy clear, so I set maven to copy resources folder dircetly to target folder (which is a basedir for the output application). This way application.properties file won't load (since I have target/resources/application.properties but not target/src/resources/application.properties). What is the best way to manage resources so they work both when I debug from IDE and run builded jar file directly?

  Answering to another StackOverflow question (this one) I stumbled upon an interresting sub-problem. What is the fastest way to sort an array of 6 ints ? As the question is very low level (will be executed by a GPU): we can't assume libraries are available (and the call itself has it's cost), only plain C to avoid emptying instruction pipeline (that has a very high cost) we should probably minimize branches, jumps, and every other kind of control flow breaking (like those hidden behind sequence points in && or ||). room is constrained and minimizing registers and memory use is an issue, ideally in place sort is probably best. Really this question is a kind of Golf where the goal is not to minimize source length but execution speed. I call it 'Zening` code as used in the title of the book Zen of Code optimization by Michael Abrash and it's sequels.

  I have a simple linked list. The node contains a string (value) and an int (count). In the linkedlist when I insert I need to insert the new Node in alphabetical order. If there is a node with the same value in the list, then I simply increment the count of the node.   For performance tests I need a way to measure the time needed for a form to load its definition from the DFM. All existing forms inherit a custom form class. To capture the current time, this base class needs overriden methods as "extension points": start of the deserialization process after the deserialization (can be implemented by overriding the Loaded procedure) the moment just before the execution of the OnFormCreate event So the log for TMyForm.Create(nil) could look like: - 00.000 instance created - 00.010 before deserialization - 01.823 after deserialization - 02.340 before OnFormCreate Which TObject (or TComponent) methods are best suited? Maybe there are other extension points in the form creation process, please feel free to make suggestions. Background: for some of our app forms which have a very basic structure (with some PageControls and QuantumGrids) I realized that it is not database access and other stuff in OnFormShow but the construction which took most of the time (around 2 seconds) which makes me wonder where this time is spent. As a reference object I will also build a mock form which has a similar structure but no code or datamodule connections and measure its creation time.

  In Oracle (10g), when I use a View (not Materialized View), does Oracle take into account the where clause when it executes the view? Let's say I have: MY_VIEW = SELECT * FROM PERSON P, ORDERS O WHERE P.P_ID = O.P_ID And I then execute the following: SELECT * FROM MY_VIEW WHERE MY_VIEW.P_ID = '1234' When this executes, does oracle first execute the query for the view and THEN filter it based on my where clause (where MY_VIEW.P_ID = '1234') or does it do this filtering as part of the execution of the view? If it does not do the latter, and P_ID had an index, would I also lose out on the indexing capability since Oracle would be executing my query against the view which doesn't have the index rather than the base table which has the index?

  I'm just starting out in Grails and need some advice on using Ajax. I want to append some html to the bottom of a div inside a form. This is basically what I have: -form- -div id="listOfchildren"- childrow 1 input fields childrow 2 input fields childrow 3 input fields -/div- -form- -a-Add Child 4-/a- When I click on the "Add Child" I want to make an ajax call that results in a new childrow getting inserted into the "listOfchildren" div. So the document would look like this: -form- -div id="listOfchildren"- childrow 1 input fields childrow 2 input fields childrow 3 input fields childrow 4 input fields -/div- -form- -a-Add Child 5-/a- In Rails I would do something simple like this: render :update do |page| page.insert_html :bottom, "list_of_children", :partial = child_partial page.replace "add_link", :partial = 'add_link' end The previous code sends an javascript back to the browser with two commands. The first command tells the browser to append some html to the bottom of a div. The second command updates the "add link" counter. In grails I can only see how to replace an entire div (which would wipe out the user's existing input) and I don't see how I can call multiple functions from the ajax response. I can probably do this if I was to write some javascript functions in prototype or whatever, but I'd like to avoid that if there is a simpler way. Thanks! Nate

• Should I store generated code in source control

  This is a debate I'm taking a part in. I would like to get more opinions and points of view. We have some classes that are generated in build time to handle DB operations (in This specific case, with SubSonic, but I don't think it is very important for the question). The generation is set as a pre-build step in Visual Studio. So every time a developer (or the official build process) runs a build, these classes are generated, and then compiled into the project. Now some people are claiming, that having these classes saved in source control could cause confusion, in case the code you get, doesn't match what would have been generated in your own environment. I would like to have a way to trace back the history of the code, even if it is usually treated as a black box. Any arguments or counter arguments? UPDATE: I asked this question since I really believed there is one definitive answer. Looking at all the responses, I could say with high level of certainty, that there is no such answer. The decision should be made based on more than one parameter. Reading the answers below could provide a very good guideline to the types of questions you should be asking yourself when having to decide on this issue. I won't select an accepted answer at this point for the reasons mentioned above.

• How to add a dynamic library to Android?

  I want to add a non-native shared library to Android so every application on the device would be able to use it. I mean using packaged classes just like a core library as if they were present in the application itself. I studied Android source code to figure out a way to add a new path to the application ClassLoader and found out that it is created during startup and there's no way to change the paths later. I can use my own ClassLoader, but all I will get after loading a class will be a reference to a Class object. This way I will be bound to work through reflection mechanism, which is slower than the native execution system. Is there any way to organise a shared library on Android?

• Installing a new SQL Server instance fails

  I've previously in my setup installed SQL Server Express 2005. Now I've switched to SQL Server Express 2008. I updated the command line parameters to those documented for the latter. If the comp already has SQL Server Express 2008 installed, my installer should create a new instance. The command line parameters are as follows: /ACTION=Install /FEATURES=SQLEngine /QS /INSTANCENAME=ABCD /SECURITYMODE=SQL /SAPWD=CunningPassword The requested instance name does not exist on the target machine. This will end in an error -2068643838. The logs show the following error: "No features were installed during the setup execution. The requested features may already be installed." If I remove the /QS parameter and try to install interactively, I'll get as far as the Feature Selection page. The UI shows three options, Instance Features, Shared Features and Redistributable Features. Whatever I select, clicking Next results in the same error (There are validation errors on this page). • Django formsets: make first required?

  These formsets are exhibiting exactly the opposite behavior that I want. But I want that one form to be required! When I dynamically add blank forms with JavaScript and vehicles_formset.empty_form all those extra forms are required, which I don't want. From the docs: The formset is smart enough to ignore extra forms that were not changed. This is the behavior the first form is exhibiting (not what I want) but not the behavior that the extra forms are exhibiting (what I do want). Is there some attribute I can can change to at least make one form required?

Update handlers can process non-JSON formats; but the other major features are these: An HTTP front-end to arbitrarily complex document modification code Similar code needn't be written for all possible clients—a DRY architecture Execution is faster and less likely to hit a revision conflict I am unclear about the third point. Executing locally, the update handler will run much faster and with lower latency. But in situations with high contention, that does not guarantee a successful update.   Flash receives the XML, but the values are wrong. How do I fix this? Problem I can see the XML loaded with no errors, but my output is way off. It's as though it's not receiving any values. Numbers in the output window and animation move rapidly. The Flash file runs as if it's variables where set to zero. I changed the order of my code, but that didn't help with this. Please explain how I can correct this.   I have to create a program that finds all the possible ways of filling a board of size 3xN You place a domino which takes up 2 spaces to completely fill the board. So far, this is my thought process on how it should be done based on what the teacher has said as well as my own thoughts. Get input and check if its even or odd If it's odd, the board can't be filled all the way and the program ends If it's even, place a domino horizontally in the top right corner of the board Test if you can place a domino vertically in that spot. Repeat those two steps as many times as possible. The problem is I don't know how to code it to the point where you can remember the placements of each domino. I can get it to where it fills the board completely once and maybe twice, but nothing past that. I also know that I'm supposed to use recursion to figure this out fwiw. Here is the code I started on so far. There is also a main method and I have the initial even/odd check working fine. • Spring Weblfow 2 - Double Submit

  Hello All, I am investigating a possible issue with double submits and I am looking at the possibilty of a double submit from a webflow execution. I have read many times that webflow will handle double submits, there are plenty references here. However I then came across I a forum response on the spring source forums contradicting what I read saying, SWF synchronizes on the conversation. Only one request will be processed at a time per conversation. Take note that if you're using snapshots, then it's possible repeatedly clicking on the submit button will generate a second request. I would recommend setting history to invalidate or discard in the transition from your view-state. We do have snapshots enabled but the book notes that using snapshots actually allows to solve the double submits. Does anyone have any insight on this? Thanks.

• Linq to Entities and LEFT OUTER JOIN issue with MANY:1 relations

  Can somebody tell me, why does Linq to Entities translate many to 1 relationships to left outer join instead of inner join? Because there's referential constraint on DB itself that ensures there's a record in the right table, so inner join should be used instead (and it would work much faster) If relation was many to 0..1 left outer join would be correct. Question Is it possible to write LINQ in a way so it will translate to inner join rather than left outer join. It would speed query execution a lot... I haven't used eSQL before, but would it be wise to use it in instead of LINQ? Edit I updated my tags to include technology I'm using in the background: Entity Framework V1 Devart dotConnect for Mysql MySql database If someone could test if the same is true on Microsoft SQL server it would also give me some insight if this is Devart's issue or it's a general L2EF functionality...   I have two overloaded methods, one with an optional parameter. void foo(string a) { } void foo(string a, int b = 0) { } now I call: foo("abc"); interestingly the first overload is called. why not the second overload with optional value set to zero? To be honest, I would have expect the compiler to bring an error, at least a warning to avoid unintentional execution of the wrong method. What's the reason for this behaviour? Why did the C# team define it that way? Thanks for your opinions!

• Searching for cluster computation framework

  I have a library, written in C#, containing one method: Response CalculateSomething(Request); The execution time of this method is relatively large, and there are a lot of responses that should be processed. I want to use a "cluster", spread this DLL to different machines (nodes) in this "cluster" and write some controller that will distribute responses to the nodes. There should be mechanism that perevent losing task because of node crush, load balancing. Can someone suggest framework that addresses this issue? P.S. There is a framework Qizmt written in C# but I think MapReduce is not good for the above scenario
