  • Problem with Classes in Python..

    Ok guys, I'm really new at python (and programming itself) so sorry for my ignorance, but I really needed to ask this. So im doing a wxPython project where I added several tabs for a notebook (each tab of the notebook = a class) and there is one tab where I added a checkbox (in a tab, lets call it for example Tab1), and what I want is that when someone checks it, a button that exists in other tab (class called for example tab2) gets hidden where previously it was being shown. Well I see that it isn't hard to accomplish this, but my problem is the classes (tab1 and tab2, in this example). I've been trying to figure it out by searching but I guess im not searching hard enough because I just can't get it right. If they were in the same class I wouldn't have a problem, but as they are in different classes, im having a huge struggle with this. Hope someone can help me, and sorry for my ignorance once again.

So a punctuation such as '-' or for example a '.' in "No." should not spacing in a sentence, but other punctuation that don't rely on a word or a phrase should be spaced.

  • WIX: Using a temporary file during install

    Hello! I am writing a WIX installer and I have a following requirement: During installation, I need to pass an absolute path to a file (lets call it A) included in my installer to a COM component, which already exists on the hard drive and is a part of another program. I have already written an appropriate Custom Action which expects a path to the file A. I don't want to include A as a file installed in the Program Files folder and removed during the uninstallation process. Instead, I would like to put A only temporary on the hard drive, call my Custom Action which will cause the COM component to use the content of A, and then remove A from disk. Is there an easy way to accomplish this goal? I have tried to utilize the Binary Table and store A there, however I don't know how to reference A using absolute path. I know I could put A outside of MSI file but I would like to keep every file installer needs in a single MSI. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Recreation of DB using "mysql mydb < mydb.sql" is really slow when the table has tens of millions of

    It seems that a MySQL database that has a table with tens of millions of records will get a big INSERT INTO statement when the following mysqldump some_db > some_db.sql is done to back up the database. (is it 1 insert statement that handles all the records?) So when reconstructing the DB using mysql some_db < some_db.sql then the CPU is hardly busy (about 1.8% usage by the mysql process... I don't see a mysqld either?) and also the hard disk doesn't seem to be too busy... Last time, the whole restore process took 5 hours. Is there a way to make it faster? Such as, when doing mysqldump, can it break the INSERT statement into shorter ones, so that the mysql doesn't need to parse the line so hard when restoring the DB?

  • Ideas for designing an automated content tagging system needed

    I am currently designing a website that amongst other is required to display and organise small amounts of text content (mainly quotes, article stubs, etc.). I currently have a database with 250,000+ items and need to come up with a method of tagging each item with relevant tags which will eventually allow for easy searching/browsing of the content for users. A very simplistic idea I have (and one that I believe is employed by some sites that I have been looking to for inspiration (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/topics.html)), is to simply search the database for certain words or phrases and use these words as tags for the content. This can easily be extended so that if for example a user wanted to show all items with a theme of love then I would just return a list of items with words and phrases relating to this theme. This would not be hard to implement but does not provide very good results. For example if I were to search for the month 'May' in the database with the aim of then classifying the items returned as realting to the topic of Spring then I would get back all occurrences of the word May, regardless of the semantic meaning. Another shortcoming of this method is that I believe it would be quite hard to automate the process to any large scale. What I really require is a library that can take an item, break it down and analyse the semantic meaning and also return a list of tags that would correctly classify the item. I know this is a lot to ask and I have a feeling I will end up reverting to the aforementioned method but I just thought I should ask if anyone knew of any pre-existing solution. I think that as the items in the database are short then it is probably quite a hard task to analyse any meaning from them however I may be mistaken. Another path to possibly go down would be to use something like amazon turk to outsource the task which may produce good results but would be expensive. Eventually I would like users to be able to (and want to!) tag content and to vote for the most relevant tags, possibly using a gameification mechanic as motivation however this is some way down the line. A temporary fix may be the best thing if this were the route I decided to go down as I could use the rough results I got as the starting point for a more in depth solution.   • Book recommendation for a Ruby dev learning Java

    I've been a Ruby developer for the past 4-5 years, and prior to that coded in Perl and a language called ProvideX for years. As hard as it may seem, I've never written a Java application short of the basic Hello World app probably a decade ago. I'm beginning to start doing some Android development to port some iPhone applications we did for a client over to the Android platform. As such, I'm wondering what the best reference book I can buy is to get up to speed quickly with the features (and peculiarities) of Java. There are numerous "Learn Ruby for Java programmers" out there, but not really any reference books for going the otherway of Ruby-to-Java. I'm looking for something preferably like the "Learn Perl the Hard Way" book. I know how to code, I just need a reference on learning the proper mechanics of Java after having done Ruby (and a bit of Obj-C) work exclusively for the past few years.

    When it comes to web development I have always tried to work SMART not HARD. So for along time My Aproach to interacting with databases in my AspNet projects has been this : 1) Create my stored procedures 2) Drag an SQLDatasource control on my aspx page 3) Bind a DataList Control to my SQLDatasource 4) Insert, Update & Delete by using my Datalist or programmatically using built in SQLDatasource methods e.g MySqlDataSource.InsertParameters["author"].DefaultValue = TextBox1.Text; MySqlDataSource.Insert(); Recently however I got a relatively easy web project. So I decided to employ a 3-tier Model...But I got exhausted halfway and just didnt seem worth it ! It seemed like I was working too HARD for a project that could have been easily accomplished by a couple of SqlDataSource Controls. So Why Is the N-Tier Model better than my Approach? Has it anything to do with performance? What are the advantages of the ObjectDataSource control over the SqlDataSource Control?

  • jQuery : how to manipulate indexes?

    Should not be such a hard question... I'm just having a hard time figuring out how to make operations on some jquery elements, particularly their indexes. Teh codez: $( "#docSlider" ).css("background-image", "url(../../bundles/mypath/images/maquette/img" + $( "#selectable li" ).index( this ) + (".jpg)")); I want to make the name of the picture I load depend on the index of a jQuery selectable. So I grab the index and try to add 1... but it can't work because "+" is also a concatenator. I've tried to parseInt as well, but it was always worth 0. How do I simply transform the index to an integer and then concatenate it with the rest of the string? Thank you in advance! Edit : I'm using a function that already exists, so I can hardly change the parameters (well, I guess I can't...)

  • Creating a custom widget using django for use on external sites

    I have a new site that I am putting together and part of it has statistics for the site's users. I would like to create a widget that others can use on another website by invoking javascript that reads data from my server and shows that statistics for a given user, but I am having a hard time finding specific tutorials that covers this in django. I have seen the link at Alex Maradon's site [0], but it looks to me like that is passing html back to the widget and I am having a hard time figuring out how to do this using something like xml.   • Python appengine Query does not work when using a variable.

    Hi, I am trying to use a fetcher method to retrieve items from my datastore. If I use the following def getItem(item_id): q = Item.all() q.filter("itemid = ", item_id) It fails because nothing is returned. If I hard code in an item like def getItem(item_id): q = Item.all() q.filter("itemid = ", 9000) it fetches just fine, and sings merrily along. I have tried every which way to get this to work. I have used result = db.GqlQuery("SELECT * FROM Item WHERE item_id = :1 LIMIT 1", title).fetch(1) to the same effect. If I hard code in a number, works fine. I have tried setting the select statement as a local string, assembling it that way, casting the int as a string, and nothing. When I output the SELECT statement to the screen, looks fine. I can cut ans paste the output into the string, and whammo, it works. Any help would be appreciated.

  • qTip with jQuery dialogs

    I'm using qTip to show validation errors in a grid. The tooltip appears after a failed row save and doesn't disappear until the row is resaved or the changes are canceled. The problem with this is that opening a dialog while the tooltip is visible causes the tooltip to be rendered on top of the dialog. That is because the z-index is hard-coded to 6000+ for all tooltips, while jQuery dialogs are set to 1000+. I could fix this problem by changing the hard-coded value in qTip to <1000, but then tooltips fired from the dialog will appear behind the dialog. Is there anything I can do, aside from changing the qTip code or using a different tooltip library?

  • Tracing or Logging Resource Governor classification function behavior in Sql Server 2008

    I'm trying to use the Resource Governor in SQL Server 2008 but I find it hard to debug the classification function and figure out what the input variables will have, i.e. does SUSER_NAME() contain the domain name? What does the APP_NAME() string look like? It's also hard to verify that it's working correctly. What group did the function return? The only way I can see this is to fire up the performance monitor and watch unblinkingly for little blips in the right CPU counter. Is there some way I can either run it in Debug mode, where I can set a breakpoint and step through and look at variable values, or can I at least do the old-school method of writing trace statements to a file so I can see what's going on? Thanks...

  • Is there a programming language with be semantics close to English ?

    Most languages allow to 'tweek' to certain extend parts of the syntax (C++,C#) and/or semantics that you will be using in your code (Katahdin, lua). But I have not heard of a language that can just completely define how your code will look like. So isn't there some language which already exists that has such capabilities to override all syntax & define semantics ? Example of what I want to do is basically from the C# code below: foreach(Fruit fruit in Fruits) { if(fruit is Apple) { fruit.Price = fruit.Price/2; } } I want do be able to to write the above code in my perfect language like this: Check if any fruits are Macintosh apples and discount the price by 50%. The advantages that come to my mind looking from a coder's perspective in this "imaginary" language are: It's very clear what is going on (self descriptive) - it's plain English after all even kid would understand my program Hides all complexities which I have to write in C#. But why should I care to learn that if statements, arithmetic operators etc since there are already implemented The disadvantages that I see for a coder who will maintain this program are: Maybe you would express this program differently from me so you may not get all the information that I've expressed in my sentence Programs can be quite verbose and hard to debug but if possible to even proximate this type of syntax above maybe more people would start programming right? That would be amazing I think. I can go to work and just write an essay to draw a square on a winform like this: Create a form called MyGreetingForm. Draw a square with in the middle of MyGreetingFormwith a side of 100 points. In the middle of the square write "Hello! Click here to continue" in Arial font. In the above code the parser must basically guess that I want to use the unnamed square from the previous sentence, it'd be hard to write such a smart parser I guess, yet it's so simple what I want to do. If the user clicks on square in the middle of MyGreetingForm show MyMainForm. In the above code 'basically' the compiler must: 1)generate an event handler 2) check if there is any square in the middle of the form and if there is - 3) hide the form and show another form It looks very hard to do but it doesn't look impossible IMO to me at least approximate this (I can personally generate a parser to perform the 3 steps above np & it's basically the same that it has to do any way when you add even in c# a.MyEvent=+handler; so I don't see a problem here) so I'm thinking maybe somebody already did something like this ? Or is there some practical burden of complexity to create such a 'essay style' programming language which I can't see ? I mean what's the worse that can happen if the parser is not that good? - your program will crash so you have to re-word it:)

I am wondering about the following questions: Is it true that when these peripheral devices are plugged onto the computer, the addresses(port numbers) of their control registers are thus determined by how they are attached to the address bus (i.e. the hard-wiring rules, not any soft things)? Who makes the scheme of the port number assignment? If I was given a naked computer(with no operating system and with many peripheral devices), how could I figure out the port number assignment so I can use them to control peripheral deveices.     Hello, does anyone knows a file format for configuration files easy to read by humans? I want to have something like tag = value where value may be: String Number(int or float) Boolean(true/false) Array(of String values, Number values, Boolean values) Another structure(it will be more clear what I mean in the fallowing example) Now I use something like this: IntTag=1 FloatTag=1.1 StringTag="a string" BoolTag=true ArrayTag1=[1 2 3] ArrayTag2=[1.1 2.1 3.1] ArrayTag3=["str1" "str2" "str3"] StructTag= { NestedTag1=1 NestedTag2="str1" } and so on. Parsing is easy but for large files I find it hard to read/edit in text editors. I don't like xml for the same reason, it's hard to read. INI does not support nesting and I want to be able to nest tags. I also don't want a complicated format because I will use limited kind of values as I mentioned above. Thanks for any help.

  • New or not so well-known paradigms, syntax features and behaviours of programming languages?

    I've designed some educational programming languages and interpreters for them, but my problem always was that they ended up "normal" and "boring", mostly similar to some kind of existing language (ASM and BASIC). I find it really hard to come up with new ideas for syntax features, "neat things" and new or very modified programming paradigms for it. I always thought that it was hard to come up with good new things not fun/useless new things for this case. I wondered if you could help me out with your creativity: What features in terms of language syntax and built-in functions as well as maybe even new paradigms can I work into my language to keep it useless but more fun, enjoyable, interesting and/or different to program in?

  • How to add space after elements added via jQuery

    I am rendering a similar construct to the below with some server side code. The server side code inserts hard returns in between the project label and text fields. Not a big deal except the below jQuery code inserts the project label and text fields mashed together. var projectLabel = $('<label for="project">Project</label>'); var projectField = $('<input type="text" name="project" id="projectName" />'); projectLabel.insertBefore($(this)); projectField.insertBefore($(this)); Because of this discrepancy the elements rendered server side have a space between them while the ones rendered on the client do not. I've tried adding a nbsp; at the end of each line to no avail. Unfortunately, I have been unable to remove the hard returns outputted by the server side code. Further because of the space I can't fix this with CSS. What are my options for adding spacing via jQuery?
