  • Can't connect to Gmail server via Mail.app in Mac OS X 10.6.3

    I've added my gmail account to Mail.app It worked find in previous days, and downloaded thousands of previous mails. But now, it can't connect to gmail server for days. What's the matter here? Here is my config in account setting: Account Type: Gmail IMAP Email Address: [email protected] Incoming Mail Server: imap.gmail.com User Name: [email protected] Password: xxxxxx And also, is there any means that I can view the transaction log of Mail.app? Maybe there I can find more information.

  • Isolate user from the rest of the system..?

    There is a non-techsavvy user, who doesn't want to learn, and can only use Windows XP or 7. The problem is, that the computer is shared which she would like to use, and the computer stores sensitive, important data. Since she clicks on everything, it's quite a russian roulette. How could I isolate her account from the rest of the system? Like having a profile on the computer (it runs Windows 7 now) which would have the files and other stuff sandboxed? I was thinking of having a dual boot system, but that could compromise the files too, or the boot sector (talking about Windows). Linux is not a way, hence ... see the first line. Is there such a software that can set up a sandboxed environment?

  • Set up ad hoc wireless connection between Windows Vista and Mac OS X

    I have the following problem - Windows Vista does not connect to adhoc wireless network created on my Macbook. I have tried to create secured (with 40 bit key) and unsecured network but Windows Vista still has problems to connect. Windows VISTA informs me -- after 5 minutes of attempts - that setting up the connection -- with my adhoc network -- took too much time. My question: do I need to configure some settings on Vista to connect it to my Macbook? Maybe it is a problem with DHCP?   • Extremely slow network directory subfolder listing from QNAP NAS in OS X

    Having an issue where I have a folder on a QNAP NAS (TS-439P II+) with over 68,000 subfolders within it. I can browse it quickly and almost instantaneously within Windows 7 via samba, however in OSX 10.6.8, it takes nearly 10+ minutes to display the subfolders, using both samba and AFP. Hoping there is an easy solution - we can't break the folders into smaller subfolders due to a requirement of proprietary software that accesses the sub folders.     There are so many choices that it's hard to know where to start. My requirements are these: Runs on Linux Most of the files will be between 5-9 MB in size. There will also be a significant number of small-ish jpgs (100px x 100px). All of the files need to be available over http. Redundancy -- ideally it would provide the space efficiency similar to RAID 5 of 75% (in RAID 5 this would be calculated thus: with 4 identical disks, 25% of the space is used for parity = 75% efficent) Must support several petabytes of data scalable runs on commodity hardware In addition, I look for these qualities, though they are not "requirements": Stable, mature file system Lots of momentum and support etc I would like some input as to which file system works best for the given requirements. Some people at my organization are leaning towards MogileFS, but I'm not convinced of the stability and momentum of that project. GlusterFS and Lustre, based on my limited research, appear to be better supported... Thoughts?

  • Install full version of Unity on Chrome OS using crouton

    I have an Acer Chromebook. Using crouton, I installed Ubuntu (unity) on it. I am pretty familiar Ubuntu 12.04. But the installed one is very minimized package. My fonts are missing and I manually installed language pack for Korean but still browser can't display Korean characters. Is there a way to install the whole packages via crouton like when you install Ubuntu 12.04 with the CD? Or is there a script that installs the missing packages on the bare Ubuntu? Thanks. Sam

    I'm a bit of a UNIX noob, but I'm trying to run the cat command to make a simple text file and it works great, however cat is never exited after making the file. For instance, I type cat ~/mytextfile.txt and hit enter, the file is created but my cursor remains on a blank line.

  • CentOS Default ACLs on Existing File System Objects

    Is there a way to have existing file system objects inherit newly set default ACL settings of their parent directories? The reason I need to do this is that I have an user who connect via SFTP to my server. They are able to change directories in their FTP client and see the root folder and the rest of the server. They don't have permissions to change or edit anything but their own user directory but I would like to prevent them from even view the contents of other directories. Is there a better way to do this than ACLs? If ACLs are the way to go I'm assuming a default ACL on the root directory would be the best way to do restrict access. I could then selectively give the user permission to view certain directories. The problem is default ACLs are only inherited by new file system objects and not existing ones.

  • Turn icon previews off globally in Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    When connecting to network drives (e.g. using ExpanDrive) every operation takes a long time. I've discovered this is due to the Finder trying to render an icon preview of every music file and PDF it encounters. Over the network, this can take a long time. I know I can turn off icon previews on a per-folder basis using the "View Options" dialog. Is it possible to change these settings globally?

  • System Monitoring Redundancy

    I consult in a small business environment where I have two HyperV hosts (with <10 VMs) + a couple other servers. I recently had an issue where one of the HyperV hosts had a CPU issue and it came down, bringing most of my non-critical VMs with it, plus a free piece of software that I use for network & system monitoring and availability. Because of this, and the fact that iDRAC locked up to, I did not get any alerts about the crash. So I am wondering how I can (cheaply) get a redundant availability monitoring system in place--Is is as simple as running Nagios or Zenoss (or whatever) on two different HyperV hosts? It just seems like running more than one copy of Nagios/Zenoss/etc could be expensive and have high overhead. Thoughts? Thanks! -Josh

    There is a site that I need to monitor for changes and pop an alarm if the change is over a certain threshold. Ideally it would use Growl to pop the notification but I'm open to alternatives. If there is an application out there that does this for purchase, I'll just buy it. If not, pointers to any Linux / Java / other recompilables that I could just add Growl support to would be very helpful!

  • IBM PS/2 Keyboard with OS X 10.6 and PS2->USB Converter

    Just got a new Mac Pro at work and as I can't stand the ZX Spectrum-esque 'dead flies' feel of the new Apple keyboards, I brought my trusty IBM SpaceSaver II to the office (with a USB/PS2 adapter) All seems generally to work ok - even the Trackpoint 'nipple' but periodically the modifier keys, notably the Ctrl and Windows keys seem to go into 'sticky' mode so that typing an 'S' brings up the save dialog, 'O' = open dialog etc. etc. Its generally fixed by switching windows and then returning back to the offending one, but this is really beginning to cheese me off. Can anyone suggest a fix?

    After I turn on my machine, the first couple of Time Machine backups seem to go OK, but after about an hour I get this error: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Latest successful backup: 7/31/11 at 12:32 PM I'm running 10.7. Time Machine is backing up an internal HD to an external USB HD. I've already run Disk Utility to repair the Time Machine partition. It's a relatively new hard drive and didn't have any issues.   • OS X multiple use of same machine via VNC

    I'm wondering if I can connect to my wife's mac via VNC while she is logged in herself. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't possible, although the machinery should be there with "fast-user-switching" support. So, if I create a profile for myself and I log in (and enable the VNC server/sharing for my profile), and then my wife switches to her own account which she uses on the physical console. Will I be able to use the mac ?

  • OS X Server - setting up a share for network home directories + fast user switching

    I'm nearly finished setting up my Open Directory master to allow users to be managed centrally and logged in on any of the client machines at home. I found discussion suggesting that using an AFP share for the 'Users' automount would result in network users (cf. users defined locally, or Portable Home Directory users) are unable to use fast user switching, as the first user logging in would trigger the automount and mount the 'Users' share with his permissions, preventing further users from using the mount. I've also found some suggestions to configure autofs such that the 'Users' share is mounted prior to any user logging in, but not great amounts of details along these lines. I'd greatly appreciate some instructions to set up autofs - ideally, on the OpenDirectory server rather than each client's etc/fstab or equivalent location, so that it isn't required per every client machine - to get fast user switching working with network users.

ERROR: `/private/tmp/pear/temp/imagick/configure --with-imagick="/Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin"' failed The error above shows up when I input /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/bin after Please provide the prefix of Imagemagick installation [autodetect] Do I need to install some other library before running the Imagick install command?

  • System fan connection on Mini-ITX server case and motherboard

    The case: Newegg listing for Chenbro ES34169-BK-120 The motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-D525TUD (Newegg has it as well but I can't post more than one link due to being a new user) As far as the question, the system fan I have no idea how to get these to connect to the motherboard. There are two connectors which then go to extension fan cables. So when you connect these, it should be good, but the extension cables are two connectors that go to the system fans and a female molex connector (if you click the Chenbro listing, look at the 6th picture and you'll see the two connections being made and the molex connector just kind of hanging out in the case). Is there a piece I'm missing to get it to connect to the 3 pin sys_fan section of the board? Thanks,

  • Setting up NIS/NFS on Mac OS 10.6

    We have an Ubuntu NIS/NFS server at work and we recently got a few new iMacs. Is there a way to set them up so they can use the linux user accounts and mount the shared nfs files? Are there any guides on how to do this? I've been googling with no success. I tried getting NFS to work by connecting to the server via the Disk Utility but after I run 'sudo automount' from the command line and ls the directory I tried to mount it to (Volumes/nfs) it gives a permissions error. If there isn't a way to do this, anyone know of any not to complicated ways to share user accounts and files between mac and linux computers (and even hypothetically a windows computer one day?) I know its kind a of huge question, but I'll greatly appreciate any advice on the topic. Thanks!

    I am trying to use cURL and get the following error on every https request I make. The error is always the same. HTTP requests work flawlessly. The verbose output is quite useless.     I read the manual page of the "mount" command, at it reads as below: All files accessible in a Unix system are arranged in one big tree, the file hierarchy, rooted at /. These files can be spread out over several devices. The mount command serves to attach the file system found on some device to the big file tree. My questions are: Where is this "big tree" located? Suppose I have 2 disks, if I mount them onto some point in the "big tree", does linux place some "special marks" in the mount point to indicate that these 2 "mount directories" are indeed seperate disks?
