• Need advice on a monitoring, reminder and warning application.

  I am a developer that also has to monitor several things on different servers. Such as: 1) Did all of the MS SQL databases backup last night? 2) Did all of the MySQL databases backup last night? 3) Were the database dumps actually copied to the right folder? 4) How much free space is left on each server's hard drives? 5) How big are folders "abc", "def", "etc" getting? 6) Send emails/alerts when thresholds are reached Etc. Just basically something to help me NOT forget such important things. I thought about writing something myself but didn't want to waste the effort if something is already out there. I would also prefer one application instead of many if I could. Thanks. EDIT Forgot to mention the operating system. These run on Windows Server 2003 and/or 2008. In fact, what would be cool is a program that supports multiple servers from one machine. Something that can log into those servers.

• Does Guest WiFi on an Access Point make any sense?

  I have a Belkin WiFi Router which offers a feature of a secondary Guest Access WiFi network. Of course, the idea is that the Guest network doesn't have access to the computers/devices on the main network. I also have a Comcast-issues Cable Modem/Router device with mutliple wired ports, but no WiFi-capabilities. I prefer to only run one router/DHCP/NAT instead of both the Comcast Router and the Belkin Router, so I can disable the Routing functions of the Belkin and allow the Comcast Router to But if I disable the Routing functions of the Belkin device, the Guest WiFi network is still available. Is this configuration just as secure as when the Belkin acts as a Router? I guess the question comes down to this: Do Guest WiFi's provide security by 1) only allowing requests to IPs found in-front of the device, or do they work by 2) disallowing requests to IPs on the same subnet? 1) Would mean that Guest WiFi on an access point provides no benefit 2) Would mean that the Guest WiFi functionality can work even if the device is just an access point. Or maybe something else entirely?

• Can grub and BCD work simultaneously?

  Here's my setup. After I installed a new SSD, I have: Original Windows 7 on sdc1 (to be retired) Copy of Windows 7 on sdb2 A Windows system partition on sdb1 Ubuntu 12.04 on sda, /boot and ergo grub is on sda1 Grub is MBR on sda and set to boot from BIOS. I prefer to not change this; grub is much preferable as a boot manager. I've run update-grub from Ubuntu and grub seems to be correctly configured as all options are available: I can boot any of the 3 Windows partitions and Ubuntu. I also ran the repair tool to get Windows to add both installations to BCD. At present, choosing particular options seem to have no effect; the old version of Windows on sdc1 always boots. I don't understand what is causing this, but I can't figure out what. How does grub and BCD play along? I can't find any docs on this. My thought was to only boot Windows off sdb1, and then let BCD do the rest (present a menu to boot between sdb2 and sdc1, but I can't seem to get BCD to boot sdb2), but this has been unsuccessful. • Bypass proxy authentication [closed]

  My scenario: My network has a proxy that requires interative authentication. When I access any URL, an username and password is requested to enable navigation. I do have a valid username/password (this means I have permissions to access external content). I do not have access to the proxy server (any change to the proxy server is not an option). What I need: I need to bypass the interative authentication process and make it an automated authentication process. What I do NOT need/want: I do not need/want to hack the network. I do not need/want to access unauthorized content. In other words, I just need to find a way to "save" my password in the computer (security is not a problem) to allow application that does not support this kind of interative authentication to access the internet (like non-browser software that also uses HTTP port). My guess: My guess is to develop a new proxy server that will run in the local machine (eg, a proxy for the network proxy). This proxy server will access my network proxy, authenticate and forward the content. Of course this is a last resort. I prefer to not need to develop a proxy server. Does someone know other solution? (any operating system)

I see a couple of unusual entries in my routing table that I would like to remove: Network Destination Netmask Gateway Interface Metric XXX.27.44.1 255.255.255.255 127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 20 XXX.27.255.255 255.255.255.255 XXX.27.44.1 XXX.27.44.1 20 All the "XXX"'s are the same octet. I would strongly prefer NOT to clear the routing table, since this is a production server. • Edit-text-files-over-SSH using a local text editor

  I am working in various Linux and UNIX environments. I'd like to elegantly solve the problem of editing remote configuration files over SSH. Instead of using terminal editors (nano), I'd like to open the file in a local text editor on my desktop (Sublime Text 2). CyberDuck, WinSCP and various other SFTP apps can do this. Using editors over X11 forwarding has also proven to be problematic. Also using archaic text editors like Vim or Emacs do not serve my needs well. They could do this, but I prefer using other text editing software. Using ssh mounts (FUSE) are also problematic unless they can happen on the demand and triggered by the remote site. So what I hope to achieve Have a somekind of easily deployable shell script etc. which I can copy to remote server (let's call it mooedit) I run mooedit command on the remote server of which I have connected over SSH connection mooedit sends some kind of signal (over SSH( to my local desktop On my local desktop this signal is captured and it determines 'a ha! moo wants to edit a file on server X in folder Y' File is SFTP transfered to the local desktop (/tmp) File is opened in a nice GUI text editor on the local desktop When Save is pressed, the local desktop notices changes in the file and SFTP sends the resulting file back to the server The question is: What signaling mechanisms SSH provides for this? Any other methods to trigger a local text editor for remote SSH file?

• Suggestions on the best home server rack cabinet

  I have a lot of gear in a colocation facility right now. Some of it is going to come home with me now. I do not know anything about the "rack mount" side of the industry. I lease a rack, and I put my stuff in it. I have a few 1U boxes, a few 2U boxes, and a few 4U boxes. 1U switch. One is a new Xserve, which means it is deep. I think I can get by with around 12U to 18U. I want to keep it as small as possible, since I do not have a lot of spare space at my home. I will not be able to bolt to the wall, floor etc, so it should not be tall. This is something I would love to more or less just be a box that sits on the floor but gives me the ability to mount nicely, do nice cable management etc. Are the "post" style racks junk? I am liking the open space, and the no limitations on depth of something like this: http://www.rackmountsolutions.net/images/products/Martin-relay-rack.jpg However, that thing is way too tall, and probably way too expensive. I am looking to be around $300.00 or less. More if I have to, though I would prefer not to. These look near perfect: (See comment for this link, the system will not let me post a second url) but I am worried the Xserve will not fit in it. If anyone has any good links, or website recommendations of good past experience, I would appreciate it. I am almost considering that I may be able to build something with random scraps of stuff at Home Depot as well.

• With no password expire notification at logon in Windows 7, how are you configuring password expire

  To my understanding, Windows 7 users do not receive password expiration notification during the logon process - it occurs strictly from the system tray. We currently have tray balloon notifications disabled to lessen user distraction, and I expect the password change process is a smoother one during the logon process rather than in an existing session. As a result, users will get prompted to change their passwords at expiration. The users also connect to Terminal Services boxes, but receive the advanced notification for password expiration there. So, Windows 7 is not notifying, but TS/RDS and XP boxes are. Any guidance on configuring this? Personally, I would turn off all expiration notices, but I understand most users would prefer to see the notification. Thoughts? Any GPO or other settings I might be overlooking? The interactive logon setting below is already enabled for our Win7 workstation GPO. My thought is balloon notifications will get turned back on for Windows 7, but I wanted to see if anyone was aware of alternatives. Thanks. • Free/opensource application for charting stock prices?

  I am looking for a free or FOSS software application for SIMPLY charting stock prices. I am not interested in any of the other nonsense typically bundled with such packages (technical analysis, back testing, tracking etc, etc). All I want to do is the following: Import file from CSV and plot on the chart Ability to scroll the chart left/right (zoom feature would be nice to) Ability to draw straight line (between 2 points) on the plot Ability to plot the graph for different resolutions (for e.g weekly, monthly - or some other custom resolution that I want) print the displayed graph (I can always use screen capture if printing is too much to ask) Thats all I want to do. I am not interested in anything else. I would have thought I could have found something by now. I would have written my own tool (I still will do that at a later stage), but I am a bit short of time at the moment, so I just want something that will do all of the above. Can anyone recommend a package. Last but not the least, I am running on Linux (and would prefer to do so - BUT if I have to, I can run on ahem - you know, Windows)

  Hi! I happen to run into various problems regarding grub and kernels. I don't really care about the kernel internas. All I want is VMware server in that dedicated root-server. 1.) I cannot build foreign headers because they will not match the running kernel. So how does one deal with that situtation? I'd prefer not to have to downgrade the kernel. Thanks for any answers!

• Vanishing Windows Desktop Shortcut Keys

  The Situation Like you, I have many applications that I like to open. I've set up keyboard shortcuts for the most common, by placing a link on the desktop and setting its Shortcut Key property: This is all fine and dandy, most of the time. When I want to bring up the GIMP, I press Ctrl+Alt+G and the GIMP launches. Lovely. The Problem Sometimes--perhaps once a month per desktop shortcut--the shortcut key assignment simply vanishes. I press Ctrl+Alt+G and nothing happens, so I go check the shortcut and see that lo and behold: nothing is there. This happens regularly to all my shortcuts (not all at once). It doesn't matter what keys I assign, and there doesn't seem to be any correlation with particular applications being open or anything of that sort. This has happened on every Windows XP machine I've ever used with any regularity. Obviously what makes this issue particularly obnoxious is that it's not easily reproducible. I have searched long and hard for a solution for (or at least acknowledgement of) this problem, to no avail, so hopefully you guys know something that I don't. I did find this question, where the answers are all basically "use a third-party app", but as far as I could tell that was a slightly different issue, related to Explorer being busy. If the solution for this turns out to be the same, fine, but I'd prefer a native fix if at all possible. Note: I've tagged this with Windows in general because I seem to remember it happening on Windows 7 as well as XP, but I rarely notice it because I use the start-menu search in preference to desktop shortcuts.

• How can I control disk numbering (enumeration) in Windows 7 Disk Management?

  A desktop system had two drives (Assigned C and D, which were enumerated in Disk Management as Disk 0 and Disk 1). A new SSD was added as the boot drive, after copying the C drive to the SSD. The SSD was connected to SATA 0 (master) port on the motherboard. The previous C Drive was moved to SATA 2 and is reformatted as a non-booting NTFS partition. The D drive remained on SATA 1. The system boots and everything seems fine. I was able to manually adjust the Drive Letters. However, the list in Disk Management is re-ordered. Disk 0 is the the previous Disk 2 (D Drive) on SATA 1, Disk 1 is the new Boot Drive (now C) on SATA 0, and Disk 2 is the former C Drive (now assigned E) on SATA 2. Does the Disk 0, 1, 2, designation mean anything? I would prefer to have them display in Disk Management as Drives C, D, and E from top to bottom. Is the Disk enumeration based on the SATA port or something else? (If it was based on SATA Port, they should be ordered C, D, E. Is there any way to re-order the Disk number assignments? What actually does determine the Disk number enumeration?

• Hardware needed to route between two networks over wireless

  I recently rented an apartment about 100 yards from my brother's house. I have line of sight to his house and can pick up his home AP signal with one of my two laptops if I go out on my balcony (facing his house) or put the laptop by the window. The other laptop will sometimes see the SSID broadcast, but fails to connect, drops, etc. We would like to set up a persistent wireless connection between our homes. We would prefer each network be logically segmented as independent networks, but he will share his internet connection. I've got a bunch of tv shows saved to a NAS by my TiVO that I'd like to make available to him across the wireless link. My brother strongly prefers to not mess with his WAP at all. His network is running fine and is afraid to mess it up. I guess you could say he is "technologically declined". If we can get a reliable 11Mbps connection we will be satisfied. What hardware do I need to make this work? I was thinking a router with two wireless interfaces (external antennas) a wired interface, and a directional antenna mounted on my balcony facing his house. Can anyone recommend hardware to make this happen? Cheaper is better. I'll only be living in the area a year or two. I do have an old satellite TV antenna if that can be used to direct the signal.

• Exchange 2010 DAG + VMWare HA = no support?

  We currently have an Exchange 2003 clustered environment (two machine cluster) that we're looking to upgrade to 2010. We recently purchased a VMWare virtualization environment (three Dell R710's with an EMC NS-120 serving up NFS datastores - iSCSI is available) that we wish to use for this new environment. I'm seeing that Microsoft does not support Exchange 2010 DAGs with a virtualization high availability solution (see links below). I would like to utilize the DAG to ensure the data stays available if one host goes down, and HA to ensure that if the physical host goes down, the VM will come back up on the other available host. Does anybody know why MS does not support this? VMWare HA will only restart the VM if it is hung/down - I don't see any difference between this and restarting the physical box if someone pulled the power... Will we only run into issues with support if it has something to do with HA/DAG failover or will they see we have HA and tell us to put it on a physical box even if it has nothing to do with HA? If we disable HA for these VM's will that satisfy them on a support case? Has anybody set up an Exchange 2010 DAG on VMware with HA enabled? Will they have any issues with using an NFS datastore? We have much greater flexibility on the EMC with NFS vs iSCSI, so I would prefer to continue utilizing that. • Looking to replace Ghost with FSArchiver or Clonezilla, few questions about capabilities

  I work for a PC Repair company and we are looking into setting up a dedicated machine with externally accessible SATA bays to clone harddrives as a safety net incase something goes wrong during a repair. We currently use a SATA/PATA to USB bridge called MagicBridge and Norton Ghost on any workstation, but we're looking to move away from Ghost. We have a computer with a large RAID5 array with Windows Server 2008 Standard currently installed, but this can be replaced with a flavour of *nix. I have some experience with Clonezilla, but FSArchiver also seems like a suitable replacment too. My Head Technician wants to know if my chosen solution (probably Clonezilla or FSArchiver, but I'm open to free suggestions) is capable of: Cloning a degraded RAID, such as a single drive from a RAID1 mirror without complaining Producing images that are easily mountable (he'd prefer them to be mountable in Windows, but if there is no other easy way, *nix should be fine) akin to Ghost Explorer so individual files can be restored as well as being able to do bare metal restores. My apologies for wordiness but I wanted to be thorough in my explaination. Thanks for any suggestions or tips :) EDIT: I've just found out that Clonezilla has a workaround for cloning RADI1 drives EDIT2: Found the answer to both of my questions, aparently I wasn't phrasing my searches right, could this question be deleted please?

  I've inherited a Subversion repository, running on FreeBSD and using Apache2.2 . Currently, we have one project, which looks like this. • Program for remove exact duplicate files while caching search results

  We need a Windows 7 program to remove/check the duplicates but our situation is somewhat different than the standard one for which there are enough programs. We have a fairly large static archive (collection) of photos spread on several disks. Let's call them Disk A..M. We have also some disks (let's call them Disk 1..9) which contain some duplicates which are to be found on disks A..M. We want to add to our collection new disks (N, O, P... aso.) which will contain the photos from disks 1..9 but, of course, we don't want to have any photos two (or more) times. Of course, theoretically, the task can be solved with a regular file duplicate remover but the time needed will be very big. Ideally, AFAIS now, the real solution would be a program which will scan the disks A..M, store the file sizes/hashes of the photos in an indexed database/file(s) and will check the new disks (1..9) against this database. However I have hard time to find such a program (if exists). Other things to note: we consider that the Disks A..M (the collection) doesn't have any duplicates on them the file names might be changed we aren't interested in approximated (fuzzy) comparison which can be found in some photo comparing programs. We hunt for exact duplicate files. we aren't afraid of command line. :-) we need to work on Win7/XP we prefer (of course) to be freeware TIA for any suggestions, John Th.

• Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2, built-in font smoothing

  I've just installed Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 onto my Windows XP to evaluate it and check whether it meets my preferences the way it did before. Okay, I've temporary defeated an urgent bug with a strange workaround (I could not open any file from the Solution Explorer), and it left bad memories to me. But however, it's okay. The first thing I've seen just opening the code editor was ClearType font rendering. Wow, so unexpectedly. I must note that I do not use standard Windows rendering techniques, but I still prefer GDI++, a font renderer developed by Japanese developers. (GDI++ allows to render the fonts in Mac/Win-Safari style over entire Windows.) Personally for me, GDI++ reaches the great font-rendering results allowing me to use the Dejavu Sans Mono font with really nice smoothing in Visual Studio 2008 (VS 2005 too, though VS 2005 crashes in this case). But GDI++ cannot affect Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 text editor - it uses ClearType (right?), and it does not care about the system font smoothing settings. It could be an editor based on WPF, right? So as far as I can see, I can't use GDI++ anymore because it uses Windows GDI(+) but no WPF? So I've got several questions: Is it possible to disable VS 2010 b2 built-in ClearType or override it with another font smoother? Is it possible to install a Safari-like font renderer for Visual Studio 2010 [betas]? Thanks a lot.

• Tool for search, watch and download youtube videos on Ubuntu

  I am looking for a tool like MacTubes for Ubuntu. MacTubes is a mac app that can search, watch and download youtube videos. The great advantage of this app is that it searches youtube and shows all videos available there and allows you to select all and download everything fast and easy. MacTubes is so awesome that it also converts the video to MP4 and downloads the HD version of a video when available. I use this on my mac, but my sister uses Linux and I am looking for something like that for her. I have tried Miro, but Miro's search feature is bad as hell. I search for something using MacTubes and it shows me 1600 results. The same search under Miro shows me 40 results. Miro never shows more than one page of results. I prefer it to be an application with a GUI, instead of command line, because my sister's proficiency in Linux is not that good. Any suggestions? Thanks.

• Playing iPad to iPad Wifi games over PPTP VPN

  I'm trying to use a VPN to play iPad to iPad Wifi (Local) games over the internet. Normally you open the game on both iPad's, connect to the same Wifi point and they can "see" and speak to each other. I figure using a VPN I can put them both on the same network (either both on the VPN or one on the "real" network and one on the VPN). On my router I've set up PPTP VPN with the ip range 192.168.1.2-50, where the PC's on the real local network are assigned 192.168.1.100+ When I connect one of the iPads to the VPN, using an external WiFi network (BT Openzone) I can ping it as expected (from any machine on the local network). However the iPad's cannot "see" each other and none of the Wifi-Wifi games work. I've also tried connecting both iPad's to the same VPN, with the result the same. All machines on the local network (and those on the VPN) can ping the iPad's but none of the Wifi to Wifi games work. I've set both iPads to send all trafic over the VPN and if I check their external IP's they match that of the real network. Does anyone know how to fix this? And/or what is causing it? Or what further debug information I can provide? Note: I don't feel this is iPad specific so would prefer if this isn't moved to a Apple SuperUser equivalent

I thought it might be easier if I included a small "wanted list": I receive about 15 to 30 e-mails every day, but I have large archives (10'000 emails), which I frequently need to access. I usually open and close my mail program many times, so I'd like it to start pretty fast I cannot use an online mailbox, because I have too many email addresses (about 5: 1 for work, 1 for home, 1 semi-private, 1 for specific emails, and 1 for newletters By order of importance, the things I'd like my mail client to be able to: Efficiently categorize e-mails. Until now, I've mostly been using Outlook folders, because filtering by tags was not easy, but I'd rather one large list of mails, neatly tagged so I can easily filter. I'd love being able to select mails by tags (eg in a click or too (could be a tab) show all mails tagged with "software") Create "tagging rules", such as "if the mail was sent to this address, add this tag", or "if the body contains ..., add that tag" Sync contacts with Gmail, handle tasks (syncing with toodledo would be awesome), possibly provide a calendar Create e-mail templates, signatures... Other ideas: A timeline, scripting support, being able to import MS Outlook emails, provide a nice backup format... Thanks for sharing ideas and suggestions!

• Router startup problems

  I have problems with my Tilgin Vood Router. As I try to start my router by turning the power on (captain obvious), it generally doesn't work the first 3-4 times. This is getting very annoying. Five minutes after turning the power on the router's signal LEDs don't blink in the way they should do in a connected state. I can connect to my routers web configuration interface through my PC connected to it via LAN though I can't access the internet. It usually takes the router five minutes to get to the point where it should be connected to the internet but as it doesn't work the first times. So I turn on my router 3-5 times, let him work 5 minutes and then suddenly, after turning the power off and on again it all works. I also have to restart my PC too in order for everything to work. How can I solve this problem? Just leave the router turned on all time? I prefer a daily IP switch, though. May the problem have something to do with my PC? There is another one connected to the router too and it doesn't work there either.

• How/when do you study?

  Would be interesting to find out how other sysadmins are educating themselves. I find myself in the need of constantly learning new things. I prefer to spend more time on the subject and know it thoroughly knowing that not doing so will kick me back in the future. This can be frustrating sometimes as it feels that I move too slowly. Our company has account on safari.oreilly.com and I am reading a book or two at any given time. I also read sysadmin related blogs for ideas and tips and to keep myself in the tune with the trends. I cannot do any study at home as I would rather spend my out of work hours with my family plus I find it hard/impossible to study at home due to the inability to concentrate at home. So I mostly study while on the train, luckily my commute time takes up to 2 hours a day. I also read a lot at work and don't feel guilty about it. To fix/implement/plan, I need to have a solid knowledge and if it requires time then this is a part of my job being a sysadmin. There is a joke that says "sysadmin is a person that knows a lot about everytihng and as a result knows nothing" - I think ther is a grain of truth here...
