• Installing Visual Studio 2010 SP1 or Windows Phone tools in your VM (danger!)

  If you've read my blog for any amount of time, you probably know that I tend to develop stuff in a Parallels VM on a Mac. It's how I roll. I like VM's because I can trash them and do really stupid things with beta software. That said, there is a pain point that doesn't seem that well documented when it comes to installing stuff in this scenario.The WP7 tools, and SP1 for Visual Studio 2010 (perhaps only if you already have the WP7 tools installed, I'm not sure), do something strange on install. As if it weren't already a long and slow installation, for reasons I don't understand, the installer fires up an instance of Windows Phone Emulator. As you may already know, the emulator doesn't run in a VM, because it is itself a VM, apparently. What it will do is fire up your CPU, make your comprooder hot and make the fans blow harder.I found this out accidentally, as I started the (slow) phone tool installation once, and walked away. An hour and a half later, I came back to find it hadn't finished. But it was hot and the CPU was pegged, so I fired up the task manager to find XDE.exe, the phone emulator, cranking away. I had to kill it several times, and eventually the install finished. It fired up just once in the SP1 install, but it still had the same hanging effect.I can't for the life of me figure out why it does this. In a VM, I can connect the phone to it and use that, so I don't need the emulator. But this install, firing up the emulator, will make it choke until you kill the XDE.exe process. Watch out!

  I have an experience in Java language and in JEE related Framework for about 5 years. In these 5 years i have worked on Core java, Spring, Hibernate, JPA, Struts 1. Now just to be prepared for the near future, i am thinking to learn some new programming language or some new technology, this will help me out to be a more elligible employee. So my question to you is, which new technology or language should i learn, my target is for next 3 years. So just in case if Java fades out (thought it won't) than i can jump on to this newly learned stuff. Where should i start from ? Should i learn some other language in JVM like Scala, Clojure, Groovy, JRuby ? Or should i learn some altogether different language like Python or Erlang, Perl ? • What is a right datatype in C++ for OpenGL scene representation with use of GLSL

  I am programming in C++ OpenGl with GLSL. Until now I have been using a data structure that is composed of std::vector filled with structures of vertexes and with their parameters (position , normal, color ...) as a global variable for all the code. My question is, as I am using VBOs for drawing - is this a good approach to this problem? I am asking because I happen to have a lot of memory related trouble with this structure. I am trying to generate a terrain with a lot of vertices - more than 1 million. This seems to work, but as I refill the buffer I get memory related issues (crushes that occur, more or less randomly). So again the question is, is this a good data structure to use / and look for the faults in my code, or should I change to something else? Or what data structure would be advisable?

• Take Camera Phone Macro Photos with a Cheap Laser Pointer Lens

  Inside those cheap laser pointers you see in the grocery store checkout line there’s a handy little plastic lens that, when slapped on your phone’s camera, makes it easy to take macro photographs. In this tutorial, they take the lens from a laser point and secure it using tape and a bobby pin. An alternative method to achieve the same end (and with a higher quality lens) is to dismantle a CD/DVD drive to source the lens and use painter’s tape to hold the lens in place–this is the technique I used several years ago, check out the tutorial video here. • Deal Registration Moves to Oracle Partner Store (OPS)- The Four Action Items for Partners

  In November 2012, Oracle’s partner deal registration process will move to the Oracle Partner Store (OPS). During this time, OPS will become the single source for partners to register deals, obtain deal status, and place orders. What will partners need to do? 1. Request an OPS Account – If your company is new to OPS the first thing you need to do is request an account (if your company already has an OPS account, go to step 2). It’s important to have the person who will be managing your OPS account make this request as soon as possible. They will be set up as your company’s primary administrator. 2. Set-Up Users in OPS – Setup of users can start immediately, and will be handled by the primary OPS administrator at your company. The process is simple, but all existing users of Global PRM (Partner Relationship Management) deal registration will need to be set up in OPS before November 14, 2012.  3. Review/Action Any Registrations Pending Submission in PRM – Prior to November 14, 2012, all pending registrations should be submitted in the existing PRM system. It is important that this step is complete so registrations will not need to be re-entered when the system is moved to OPS on November 17, 2012. Registrations pending submission are easily identified on the registration listing screen with either “Incomplete” or “Returned to Partner” in the status column.  4. Attend Training – Oracle will offer multiple VAD and VAR training sessions beginning October 29, 2012. It is recommended that all users attend one of these important sessions.  Detailed instructions on each of these tasks can be found on the OPS Information Page. • The Evolution of Computer Keyboards

  While the basic shape of keyboards has remained largely unchanged over the last thirty years, the guts have undergone several transformations. Read on to explore the history of the computer keyboard. ComputerWorld delves into the history of the modern keyboard, including the heavy influence IBM’s extensive keyboard research on early keyboards: As far as direct influences on the modern computer keyboard, IBM’s Selectric typewriter was one of the biggest. IBM released the first model of its iconic electromechanical typewriter in 1961, a time when being able to type fast and accurately was a highly sought-after skill. Dag Spicer, senior curator at the Computer History Museum, notes that as the Selectric models rose to prominence, admins grew to love the feel of the keyboard because of IBM’s dogged focus on making the ergonomics comfortable. “IBM’s probably done more than anyone to find [keyboard] ergonomics that work for everyone,” Spicer says. So when the PC hit the scene a decade or two later, the Selectric was largely viewed as the baseline to design keyboards for those newfangled computers you could put in your office or home.   In some computer master program online application, it says: Please list the programming languages in which you have written programs. For each language, indicate the length in lines of the longest working program you have written in that language. You may approximate, but only count those parts of the program that you wrote yourself. I don't quite remember that, and I have never counted the lines of each program. Do programmers always know approximately how many lines in each of his programs, and keep record of them? What is the relation between " lines of the longest working program " in a language and familiarity with it? Typically, how many lines will indicate the programmer being excellent, good, fair, or unfamiliar with the language? Is knowing "lines of the longest working program" really helpful?
