  Quite a long ago I wrote about a SQL Server programming tip on how to extract date part from a DATETIME column. The post discusses about using of T SQL function convert() to get date part. One of the readers of the post, tipped me about a better way of extracting date part and here is the SQL query he sent to us SELECT DateAdd(day, DateDiff(day, 0, getdate()), 0); In clean way this query trims off time part from the DATETIME value. I rate this solution better than the one I wrote long ago as this one does not depend on any string operations. According the commenter, this method is faster compared to the other. What do you say? Am I doing good wanting to learn C# when I'm determined to stick with ubuntu and develop on it or for it? If not, can you give me reasons why? And which languages would be better than c# for ubuntu development? I already know c, c++, java(basics), php, mysql, python(basics). I like to learn new stuff, but stuff that worth my time. Does C# worth my time? If c# worth my time, here's what I have done and what I need: I installed all mono packages I could find on the ubuntu standard repositories. Now I want a good tutorial to get me started. I'm a complete noob with c# so a basic tutorial and how to compile run under ubuntu 12.04 would be great.

• Turn a Kindle into a Weather Display Station

  The e-ink display, network connectivity, and low-power consumption of Kindle ebook readers make them a perfect candidate for an infrequently refreshed high-visibility display–like a weather display. Read on to see how to hack a Kindle to serve up the local weather. Tinker and hardware hacker Matt Petroff hacked his Kindle to accept input from a web server and then, graciously and in the spirit of geeky projects everywhere, shared his source code. He explains the heart of the project: The server side of the system uses shell and Python scripts to convert weather forecast data into an image for the Kindle. The scripts first download and parse forecast data from NOAA via the National Digital Forecast Database XML/SOAP Service. After parsing the data, the data then needs to be converted into an image. This is accomplished by preprocessing a specially crafted SVG file to insert temperatures, forecast symbols, and days of the week. This SVG is then rendered as a PNG using rsvg-convert and converted to a grayscale, no transparency color space as required by the Kindle using pngcrush. Finally, it is copied to a public location on the web server. The Kindle is set to refresh twice a day (you could easily tweak the scripts for a more frequent refresh) and displays the forecast as seen in the photo above–with crisp and easy to read text and icons. • A good language for c# dev to expand his mind [closed]

  I have some free time on my hands and I was thinking about learning a new language. I do not plan to use it in my day-to-day job, but I rather want to expand my way of thinking to get a better sense where the dev world is heading from a language perspective and to don't get stuck in my way when programming by rather try new approaches. I was thinking either a functional language, like Haskell or F# (which is a bit more 'pragmatic from a .NET dev standpoint) or something dynamic (like Python, that in my oppinion has nicer syntax than Ruby). What can you recommend that is enjoyable, at least a bit practical, but most of all, new (from a c# dev perspective). I appreciate any answers.

• Notable programs/games made in C/C++/Java/Python? [closed]

  What are some famous programs or video games that were written in the following languages? C C++ Java Python I'm asking this particularly so I know how powerful impact did those languages have on our lives. I believe Windows was also written in C/C++ but I'm not sure if fully. Also if you are kind enough you can mention some other language impacts besides programs/video games. These languages are by far the most common so that's why I've picked them. Besides the impact on our lives I'd also like to see the power these languages have. I'm studying programming and I've learned bits of all those languages and I think if I knew some famous examples of programs written in those languages I could understand the power of them, as well as inspire me further in my career.

• Is it OK to live without knowing how the program you created works?

  I mean, there are really useful libs that can solve problems when you are stuck and do not know how to solve this or that with your knowledge of programing language you use... For example, Boost for C++ or JQuery for JavaScript or Spring for Java... They solve problems in seconds and you do not really care how they did it (despite that they are written in the very same language you are programming in)... So I wonder am I alone use libs not being capable to write solutions for my problems from scratch or its standard practice?

• Is there a well grounded theory on backward and forward compatibility of formats, languages, grammars and vocabularies?

  I have a friend who has the specific problem of building a case against the use of a custom HTML <wrapper> tag in some site's markup. Now, intuitively we can answer that use of such a tag is risky, as future HTML specs may define a wrapper tag with semantics that conflict with its use on the site. We can also appeal to a particular section of the HTML5 spec which also recommends against the use of custom tags for this reason. And while I agree with the conclusion, I find these arguments a little on the weak side, on their own. Is there some well grounded and proven theory in computer science from which we can derive this conclusion? Have programming language theorists created proofs about the properties of vocabulary versioning, or some such thing?
