• Reporting Services keeps erasing my dataset parameters

  I'm using a web service and every time I change something on the dataset, it erases all my parameters. The weird thing is, I can execute the web service call from the data tab and it prompts for all my parameters, but if I click to edit the data the list is empty or if I try to preview the report it blows up because parameters are missing. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if there is a way to prevent this behavior. Here is a copy of the dataset, not that I think it matters. This has to be the most annoying bug (if its a bug) ever. I can't even execute the dataset from the designer without it erasing my parameter list. When you have about 10 parameters and you are making all kinds of changes to a new report, it becomes very tedious to be constantly re-typing the same list over and over. • Hiring my first employee

  A few years ago I moved to a new job having been programming for 2 years using C#, however this new company was mainly using VB6. I made the case for .NET and won, but one of the consessions I had to make was to use VB.NET and not C# (understandable as most of the other developers were already using VB). Three years later it was time to move on, but when applying for jobs I couldn't get past the recruitment agents. I realised that when they were looking at the basic requirements (5 years experience) that they could not add 2 and 3 together to make 5. They were looking for 5 years in VB or C# not across both. Frustrated I decided to combine my skills with a designer friend and start my own company. After two years of hard graft we are now looking for our first employee (a programmer), and this question has hit me again, but now I see the employers perspective. Why take the risk of someone getting up to speed when you have thousands of applicants to choose from. So my question is this, if I define the requirements to be too narrow, I could miss the really great candidates. But if they are too broad it's going to take ages to go through them all. This will be our first 'employee' so the choice needs to be good, I can't afford to make a mistake and employ someone naff. Another option would be to choose a bright university graduate, and train them up (less of a risk because we can pay them less). What have others done in this situation, and what would you recommend I do?

• How can I improve this search usability?

  This is the first real programming attempt of mine, and theres some major flaws. It's a learning project, and I'm currently re-writing the entire thing as my php is is really messy. I really want to get an idea on how I can improve the actual usability and accesibility of the site at the same time though - so I know how to implement it correctly. The website is basically a comparison website for gameserver hosting. As I mentioned, its a learning project and I don't actually expect any revenue from it. At the moment theres only test data in it, so in the game input box select either 'Battlefied Bad Company 2' or 'Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare' and ignore the actual search results. http://www.laglessfrag.com I wasn't really sure how to work the search functionality. Basically when you click a game in the drop down box, it sends an ajax request and finds all the locations available to that specific game in the database. After selecting the country theres another ajax to find all the citys available to the game in that country - which gives me the two unique identifiers I need to create the search results. One major and fundamental flaw is that without javascript enabled, the site ceases to function. I'll overcome that in the next re-write, but without the ajax functionality stopping the user 'going wrong' - how can I implement a search that requires two fields without creating extra steps in new pages after form submissions? I'm also no designer so my whole layout and css is a bit rubbish, but this was mainly a learning project as I'm interested in applications / programming rather than design. It's also slow as its on shared hosting, but if I can get it to work correctly then I'm not impartial to chucking a bit of money at it for faster hosting and maybe a bit of advertising and seeing where it goes (if anywhere!). Any info appreciated.

• InfoPath FormControl on STA worker thread

  I have a .NET class that exposes two public methods: one to create an InfoPath form and another to Export to one of the supported formats. I’m using the Microsoft FormControl to do this. It’s hosted by a Form that does not get displayed. I get called by a Winforms app, but on an MTA worker thread instead of the UI thread. So I create an STA thread and execute on that, which works exactly once and then results in this exception: System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled Message="Unable to get the window handle for the 'FormControl' control. Windowless ActiveX controls are not supported."   I want to know whats the Relationship between a common wall (that are located In an adjoining room ) and the rooms. As i know the relationship between a room and its walls is Composition not Aggregation (am i right ?) And according to the definition of Composition the contained object can't be shared between two containers, whereas in aggregation it is possible. now i am confused that whats the best modeling approach to represent the relationship between a common wall and the rooms located next to it ? • Can Core Data be used for objects with variable schemas?

  I'm implementing a new iPhone app and am relatively new to Cocoa development overall. I am at the stage of choosing how the persistence layer of this app will work, and it looks like I'm basically choosing between Core Data and sqlite3. The persisted models in this app are intended to have a schema that is loaded at runtime (from some kind of defn file, probably XML). By which I mean, this app is intended to have objects that are user-definable to some extent, e.g. the Customer type (which has certain built-in fields like "name" and "email") can be modified to have extra fields based on the user's specific needs (e.g. a user might want to add a "favourite fruit" field to their Customer type). Having said that, will Core Data work for an app with a non-baked-in data model like this? I've just started playing around with the Core Data object designer thing in XCode and it seems like this thing wants to work with objects that have fixed fields that are compiled in. I'm definitely trying to take the path of least resistance here, and I can see the benefits of using an Apple-supplied data framework, but don't want to start down that path if it's going to lock me into a data model that's defined at compile time.

  I am looking setting up a deployment process for a highly customised Magento site, and was wondering how other people do this. I will be setting up dev, UAT and prod environments. All the Magento files will be in source control (SVN). At this stage, I can't see any requirements for changing the DB, so the 3 databases will be manually maintained. Specifically, How do you apply Magento upgrades? (Individually in each env, or on dev then roll out, or just give up on upgrades?) What files/folders do leave alone in each environment (e.g. magento/app/etc/local.xml) Do you restrict developers to editing specific files/folders? Do you restrict theme designers to editing specific files/folders? How do you manage database changes?   Does anyone know how to get a CodeDomProvider in the new Microsoft.VisualStudio.TextTemplating.VSHost.BaseCodeGeneratorWithSite from the Visual Studio 2010 SDK? I used to get access to it just by in mere inheritance of the class Microsoft.CustomTool.BaseCodeGeneratorWithSite, but now with this new class it is not there. I see a GlobalServiceProvider and a SiteServiceProvider but I can't find any example on how to use them. • Nothing gets displayed when debugging Microsoft Surface

  I am trying to write my first Microsoft Surface application, and am doing the development on the Surface unit itself. I successfully re-created the quick "Photos" application that is shown on the PDC Video, however, now that I'm trying to create my own app - nothing actually shows up when I run it. I'm mainly just adding ScatterViews right now - and they show up fine in the designer, but as soon as I hit F5 - the shell is shown on the surface - but none of the ScatterViews show up. Here's my xaml code so far. When I try to open "Shell.xaml" in the designer it tells me : The "shell.xaml" cannot be loaded at design time because it says it could not create an instance of type "SearchBar.xaml". When I debugged the devenv.exe using another visual studio instance it tells me that it does not have access to the Brush I created in app.resources. If one is doing a Presenter first approach, how does one access resources? I had this working when the startupURI was "Shell.xaml" and the startup event was not present. Any clues/ideas/suggestions. I am just trying to understand. Everything works as expected when I run the application just not @ design time.

• ASP.NET MVC Newbie: why isn't my model available when creating a strongly-typed view?

  I'm starting with ASP.NET MVC, and working with NerdDinner as reference. I did the following: Created a new project Added a couple of tables Created LINQ to SQL for them Created a new controller My Models directory now contains MyModel.dbml, under which I have MyModel.designer.cs, that contains classes for models relating to both of my tables (let's call them Categories and Products). Now, under my new controller, I would like to create a strongly typed view. So for example I have the following code in my controller (for my application I must work by name, and the "Name" field is unique): public ActionResult Details(string name) { MyModelDataContext db = new MyModelDataContext(); Product user = db.Products.Single(t => t.Name == name); return View(user); } I would like to create a strongly-typed view. So I right-click the line "return View(user)", and choose "Add View...". I click "Create a strongly-typed view". When I click the dropdown of "View data class", I don't see my models, but only: MyProject.Controllers.AccountMembershipService MyProject.Controllers.FormsAuthenticationService What am I missing?

• Design PDF template and populate data at runtime using java,xml etc..

  well i have been looking for a java based PDF solutions...we dont have a clean way i guess-still.. all solutions are primitive and kind of workarounds... No easy solution for this requirement - 1. Designing a PDF template using a IDE (eg. Livecycle designer ..which is not free) 2. Then at runtime using java, populate data into this PDF template...either using xml or other datasources... such a simple requirement and NONE has a good "open-source and free" solution yet ! Is anyone aware of any ? I have been searching for since 3-4 years now..for a clean way out... Eclipse BIRT comes close.. but does not handle Barcode elements ..OOB. Jasper - ireport is also good but that tool does not have a table concept and is kind of annoying ! Also barcode support is not good. XSL-FO has not free IDE for design . Looking for a better answer .. got one ?

• Synchronizing screencasting (ffmpeg) and capturing from the webcam (OpenCV)

  As from my previous questions, I am trying to build a simple eye tracker. Decided to start from a Linux version (run Ubuntu). To complete this task one should organize screencasting and webcam capturing in such way that frames from both streams exactly match each other and there is the same number of frames in each of them totally. Screencasting fsp fully depends on the camera's fsp, so each time we get the image from the webcam we can potentially grab a screen frame and stay happy. However, all the tools for the fast screencasting, like ffmpeg, for example, return the .avi file as the result and require the fsp already known to be started. From the other side, tools like Java+Robot or ImageMagick seem to require around 20ms to return the .jpg screenshot, which is pretty slow for the task. But they may be requested right after each time the webcam frame is grabbed and provide the needed synchronization. So the sub-questions are: 1. Does the USD camera's frame rate vary during a single session? 2. Are there any tools which provide fast screencasting frame by frame? 3. Is there any way to make ffmpeg push a new frame to the .avi file only when program initiates this request? For my task I may either use C++ or Java. I am, actually, an interface designer, not the driver programmer, and this task seems to be pretty low-level. I would be grateful for any suggestion and tip!

• Return type from DAL class (Sql ce, Linq to Sql)

  Hi, Using VS2008 and Sql CE 3.5, and preferably Linq to Sql. I'm learning database, and unsure about DAL methods return types and how/where to map the data over to my business objects: I don't want direct UI binding. A business object class UserData, and a class UserDataList (Inherits List(Of UserData)), is represented in the database by the table "Users". I use SQL Compact and run SqlMetal which creates dbml/designer.vb file. This gives me a class with a TableAttribute: <Table()> _ Partial Public Class Users I'm unsure how to use this class. Should my business object know about this class, such that the DAL can return the type Users, or List(Of Users) ? So for example the "UserDataService Class" is a part of the DAL, and would have for example the functions GetAll and GetById. Will this be correct : ? • Generating SQL change scripts in SSMS 2008

  I have gone through many related SO threads and got some basic info. Already generated DB diagram. After that i am unable to find a button/option to generate SQL scripts (create) for all the tables in diagram. "Generate script" button is disabled, even on clicking the table in diagram. However i enabled the auto-generate option in tools-designer. But what to do with previous diagrams. I just want an easy way to auto-generate such scripts (create/alter) and would be gud if i get auto-generated stored procs for insert/selects/update etc. EDIT: I could do generate scripts for DB objects. Now: 1. How to import DB diagram from another DB. 2. How to generate (and manage their change integrated with VS source control) routine stored-procs like insert, update and select. Ok let me ask another way, can experts guide on the usual flow of creating/altering tables (across releases), creating stored-procs (are stored-procs the best way to go ?) and their change-management using SSMS design tools and minimal effort ?

• MVC 2 - Name Attributes on HTML Input Field when using Parent/Child Entities

  Hi All, I'm pretty new to MVC 2 using the Entity Framework. I have two tables Company {ID int identity PK,Name nvarchar} and User {ID int identity PK,UserName nvarchar,CompanyID int FK}. A Foreign Key exists between User and Company. I generated my ADO.NET Entity Data Model, a Controller and a view to insert a record. My HTML form has the fields Company and UserName and the idea is when I click save a Company and User is inserted into the database. Sounds straight forward right! My question is as follows: I created a strongly-typed view derived from my 'User' entity. I'm using the the html helper Html.TextBoxFor(model = model.Organisation.Name) but the html name attribute for this input field is 'Organisation.Name'. My problem with this is that the dot throws up all sorts of issues in JQuery, which sees this as a property. If I want to change the name I read that I can use DataAnnotations but because I used the Entity Designer this involves using Buddy Classes. Seems like a bit of overkill just to change the html name attribute on this input field. Am I approaching this the right way or am I missing something here? Thanks for the help !

• In Java it seems Public constructors are always a bad coding practice

  This maybe a controversial question and may not be suited for this forum (so I will not be insulted if you choose to close this question). It seems given the current capabilities of Java there is no reason to make constructors public ... ever. Friendly, private, protected are OK but public no. It seems that its almost always a better idea to provide a public static method for creating objects. Every Java Bean serialization technology (JAXB, Jackson, Spring etc...) can call a protected or private no-arg constructor. My questions are: I have never seen this practice decreed or written down anywhere? Maybe Bloch mentions it but I don't own is book. Is there a use case other than perhaps not being super DRY that I missed? EDIT: I explain why static methods are better. .1. For one you get better type inference. For example See Guava's http://code.google.com/p/guava-libraries/wiki/CollectionUtilitiesExplained .2. As a designer of the class you can later change what is returned with a static method. .3. Dealing with constructor inheritance is painful especially if you have to pre-calculate something.

• Using Tcl DSL in Python

  I have a bunch of Python functions. Let's call them foo, bar and baz. They accept variable number of string arguments and does other sophisticated things (like accessing the network). I want the "user" (let's assume he is only familiar with Tcl) to write scripts in Tcl using those functions. Is this possible to do in Python? If so, how? from Tkinter import *; root= Tk(); root.tk.eval('puts [array get tcl_platform]') is the only integration I know of, which is obviously very limited (not to mention the fact that it starts up X11 server on mac).

• Moving from a non-clustered PK to a clustered PK in SQL 2005

  HI all, I recently asked this question in another thread, and thought I would reproduce it here with my solution: What if I have an auto-increment INT as my non-clustered primary key, and there are about 15 foreign keys defined to it ? (snide comment about original designer being braindead in the original :) ) This is a 15M row table, on a live database, SQL Standard, so dropping indexes is out of the question. Even temporarily dropping the foreign key constraints will be difficult. I'm curious if anybody has a solution that causes minimal downtime. I tested this in our testing environment and finally found that the downtime wasn't as severe as I had originally feared. I ended up writing a script that drops all FK constraints, then drops the non-clustered key, re-creates the PK as a clustered index, and finally re-created all FKs WITH NOCHECK to avoid trawling through all FKs to check constraint compliance. Then I just enable the CHECK constraints to enable constraint checking from that point onwards, and all is dandy :) The most important thing to realize is that during the time the FKs are absent, there MUST NOT be any INSERTs or DELETEs on the parent table, as this may break the constraints and cause issues in the future. The total time taken for clustering a 15M row, 800MB index was ~4 minutes :)

• Tools\addin's for formating or cleaning up xaml?

  I'm guessing these don't exist since I searched around for these but I'm looking for a few tools: 1) A tool that cleans up my xaml so that the properties of elements are consistent through a file. I think enforcing that consistence would make the xaml easier to read. Maybe there could be a hierarchy of what comes first but if not alphabetical might work. Example before: TextBox Name="myTextBox1" Grid.Row="3" Grid.Column="1" Margin="4" TextBox Grid.Column="1" Margin="4" Name="t2" Grid.Row="3" Example after: TextBox Name="myTextBox1" Grid.Row="3" Grid.Column="1" Margin="4" TextBox Name="t2" Grid.Row="3" Grid.Column="1" Margin="4" (note < / has been remove from the above since control seem to have issues parsing whe the after section was added) 2) Along the same lines as above, to increase readability, a tool to align properties, so from the above code example similar props would start in the same place. <TextBox Name="myTextBox1" Grid.Row="3" Grid.Column="1" Margin="4"/> <TextBox Name="t2" Grid.Row="3" Grid.Column="1" Margin="4"/> I know VS has default settings for XAML documents so props can be on one line or separate lines so maybe if there was a tool as described in (1) this would not be needed...but it would still be nice if you like your props all on one line. 3) A tool that adds X to the any of the Grid.Row values and Y to any of the Grid.Column values in the selected text. Every time I add a new row\column I have to go manually fix these. From my understanding Expression Blend can help with this but seem excessive to open Blend just to increment some numbers (and just don't grok Blend). Maybe vs2010 with the designer will help but right now I'm on VS08 and Silverlight. Any one know of any tools to help with this? Anyone planning to write something like this...I'm looking at you JetBrains and\or DevExpress. Thanks.

• Favourite Features of VS 2010

  With the general public release of Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 today, this latest version has created a lot of hype and interest. Indeed, the opinion I've gauged is that VS 2010 has resolved a great deal of the minor flaws left over from previous versions, as well as added some particularly useful new code editor and project development tools (in particular the Premium/Ultimate versions). My question here is: what are you favourite new features in VS 2010 that have really got you excited? Or similarly, what are the flaws of VS 2008 that you are most glad to have resolved? There is a wealth of changes in VS 2010, of course, but these are some of the ones that have interested me most (about which I know!). Integrated support for F# (with multi-targeting for .NET 2.0 - 4.0)/ Much improved WPF designer. The VS 2008 was more than a bit buggy at times. Great improvements to the code editor, such as call hierarchy viewing. A decent add-in framework. A greatly expanded testing framework (now capable of database testing, for example) in Premium/Ultimate. Project planning and modelling features in Premium/Ultimate. If I could request one point/feature per post, I think that would be best, so we could vote them individually.

• How should I use .ico files in a Winforms Application ?

  I'm developing a WinForms c# 3.0 application. Our designer created quite a lot of .ico files containing all the needed art. The choice of .ico was made because quite often, the same image is needed in several places in different dimensions. Now, it seems .ico files are really annoying to use in visual studio. The only way to use those images seems to be through images list (which aren't supported by all controls). Compared to other resources, you can't write this : foo.Image = global::RFQHUB.RFQHUBClient.Properties.Resources.foo; // Cannot implicitly convert type 'System.Drawing.Icon' to 'System.Drawing.Image' Here are the options I'm considering : create ImageLists of all possible sizes referencing all my icons in my main window. Link these ImageLists from other windows and find a way to export Image objects from the ImageList when I can't use it directly ; since ImageList contains a Draw() method, this should probably be possible. convert all the x.ico I've got in several x16.gif ...x48.gif, and use those through resources. I'd be interested to know if some people have been successfully using .ico resources in a Winform application. In so, how did you set up things ?
