• Book recommendation for a Ruby dev learning Java

  I've been a Ruby developer for the past 4-5 years, and prior to that coded in Perl and a language called ProvideX for years. As hard as it may seem, I've never written a Java application short of the basic Hello World app probably a decade ago. I'm beginning to start doing some Android development to port some iPhone applications we did for a client over to the Android platform. As such, I'm wondering what the best reference book I can buy is to get up to speed quickly with the features (and peculiarities) of Java. There are numerous "Learn Ruby for Java programmers" out there, but not really any reference books for going the otherway of Ruby-to-Java. I'm looking for something preferably like the "Learn Perl the Hard Way" book. I know how to code, I just need a reference on learning the proper mechanics of Java after having done Ruby (and a bit of Obj-C) work exclusively for the past few years.

• Best way to do something when a runloop event is done processing?

  I have some processing in my Cocoa app that sometimes ends up calling through a hierarchy of data to do a bunch of work as the result of an event. Each small piece creates and destroys some resources. I don't want those resources around most of the time, but I would like to find a smart way of creating them before all the work and killing them at the end. Short of creating the resources up front and then passing them entirely down through the call hierarchy when work is done, is there a way to know locally in some code when an event loop run has ended? Then I could create them if they're not there, and keep them until the run loop ends, reusing them for any subsequent calls before that time. Thanks.

I'm well aware of the general triangulation algorithms that exist, but I need a short, well optimized algorithm that deals with quadrilaterals only. • Javascriptlibrary more efficient than Rickshaw for realtime visualizations

  I want to visualize data as time-series graphs on mobile devices(tablets) and therefore stumbled upon rickshaw, which is based on D3. First I must say I was a little bit confused when I realized that realtime in web design is defined totally different to realtime in engineering which has fixed(and often very short) timeframes. Anyway my aim is to visualize the data as fast as possible, and on older tablets visualization with rickshaw is quite slow. Can anybody recommend another library, which may be more efficient in rendering? Or is there no way out and I have to go native? regards Dan.

• Flash crash on long JSON load time

  I have a Flex program that gets a JSON array from a PHP script. The PHP script doesn't contain just a simple JSON array but it grabs data from Activecollab and do some work on the data before encoding the data. The first test involve a small JSON array that took a short time to encode by PHP. However, when I try to scale up the test, the Flash movie will crash trying to load the JSON data from PHP. There's no code difference between the tests, just the amount of data and amount of time it takes PHP to encode. Am I looking at a memory problem or a time out problem?

• Connecting to Google app email servers in Python to send from an alias

  I'm looking to send many emails via Python and would like to connect to Google's email servers to send it from my company email address (it's for work). I've got working code for sending the email through the old company email ([email protected]) which is our login, but can't figure out how to send it through the alias ([email protected]) we use frequently. Long story short, logging in with my regular Google Apps account won't do and I need to sign in with an alias (nickname) instead. Alternatively, I can sign with the regular account ([email protected]) but send via a different email ([email protected]). Working in python and pretty new to programming, but am a good listener! (It's like this question: Google Apps - Send email from a nickname but in Python).

• Non-string role names in ASP.NET MVC?

  ASP.NET MVC has good support for role-based security, but the usage of strings as role names is maddening, simply because they cannot be strongly-typed as enumerations. For example, I have an "Admin" role in my app. The "Admin" string will now exist in the Authorize attribute of my action, in my master page (for hiding a tab), in my database (for defining the roles available to each user), and any other place in my code or view files where I need to perform special logic for admin or non-admin users. Is there a better solution, short of writing my own authorization attribute and filter, that would perhaps deal with a collection of enumeration values?

  Imagine I've got the following in a text file opened under Emacs: some 34 word 30 another 38 thing 59 to 39 say 10 here 47 and I want to turn into this, adding 1 to every number made of 2 digits: some 35 word 31 another 39 thing 60 to 40 say 11 here 48 (this is a short example, my actual need is on a much bigger list, not my call) How can I do this from Emacs? I don't mind calling some external Perl/sed/whatever magic as long as the call is made directly from Emacs and operates only on the marked region I want. How would you automate this from Emacs? I think the answer I'm thinking of consist in calling shell-command-on-region and replace the region by the output... But I'm not sure as to how to concretely do this.

• How to get flash player to display under content on a PC?

  Long story short, I'm developing a theme template for a blog that enables you to view the posts in blocks. The main part of the post is displayed at first, then the secondary content is displayed over that when you hover over the post block. Everything works fine on a Mac Versions of all major browsers, but start browsing on a PC, and all hell breaks loose when you start trying to display content over Flash Video embeds. The flash element remains visible over the content. It's completely unusable. From a PC, you can view an example of the problem here: http://photorific.tumblr.com I'm almost certain this is a bug in the Flash Plugin for Windows, but I was wondering if anyone else had come across this problem before, and if there were any solutions. • MySQL date query only returns one year, when multiple exist

  I'm a part-time designer/developer with a part-time photography business. I've got a database of photos with various bits of metadata attached. I want to query the database and return a list of the years that photos were taken, and the quantity of photos that were taken in that year. In short, I want a list that looks like this: 2010 (35 photos) 2009 (67 photos) 2008 (48 photos) Here's the query I'm using: SELECT YEAR(date) AS year, COUNT(filename) as quantity FROM photos WHERE visible='1' GROUP BY 'year' ORDER BY 'year' DESC Instead of churning out all the possible years (the database includes photos from 2010-2008), this is the sole result: 2010 (35 photos) I've tried a lot of different syntax but at this point I'm giving in and asking for help!

• How to paste transparent image into flash project

  Hi, I've created a short text (a word) in photoshop with the blending options I prefer and now it's all done I would like to paste it into my flash project. The problem is I can't get the text to be transparent in the flash, I always see the white background which is not very nice since the background on which the text will show is actually a picture. How to make this text transparent? In photoshop I started a new transparent project. Copying from a .GIF file also doesn't work... Thanks!!

• Simplest way of creating java next/previous buttons

  I know that when creating buttons, like next and previous, that the code can be somewhat long to get those buttons to function. I see that the fillTextFields(false) uses a boolean value and that you need to initialize that boolean value in the beginning of the code I believe. I had put private fillTextFields boolean = false; but this does not seem to be right... I'm just hoping someone could explain it better. Thanks :)

Any idea where to start? I can't really think of anything besides the naive approach (ie. trying all permutations) which would take too long to be a valid answer. Btw, the language there says c++ and pascal I think, but i don't care what language you use - I mean really all I want is a hint as to the direction I should proceed in, and perhpas a short explanation to go along with it. It feels like I'm missing something obvious... Of course extended speculation is more than welcome, but I just wanted to clarify that I'm not looking for a full solution here :) Short version of the question: You have a binary string N of length 1-100 (in the question they use H's and G's instead of one's and 0's). You must remove all of the digits from it, in the least number of steps possible. In each step you may remove any number of adjacent digits so long as they are the same. That is, in each step you can remove any number of adjacent G's, or any number of adjacent H's, but you can't remove H's and G's in one step. Example: HHHGHHGHH Solution to the example: 1. HHGGHH (remove middle Hs) 2. HHHH (remove middle Gs) 3. Done (remove Hs) -->Would return '3' as the answer. Note that there can also be a limit placed on how large adjacent groups have to be when you remove them. For example it might say '2', and then you can't remove single digits (you'd have to remove pairs or larger groups at a time). Solution I took Mark Harrison's main algorithm, and Paradigm's grouping idea and used them to create the solution below. • jquery hover menu question

  Hi all, I am developing a small web app that uses jquery quite a lot. In my app a user can hover an image, which becomes bigger after a few seconds, giving him more details. The problem is that when the image enlarges the image, it takes over the area of the nearby images as well. Now, if the user goes over the second red square (numbered as 2) I would like the currently enlarged image to disappear and instead enlarge the image pictured below as square two. I am not much of a painter, but I have attached a small image to help illustrate the problem. In short, How can I tell jquery to detect when the mouse is over red square number two, yet not raising the event if the mouse is over green square. [in my demo picture, hovering on point]

• Program occasionally stuck when writing to ldap

  hey guys, I have 2 databases for my program : mysql and ldap. All transactions happen to mysql, but i need ldap to connect to ip-phones. There's an option to synchronise the ldap database. So when the ldap is brand new, and mysql contains like 200+ records, it may want to update. But when inserting all those entries, it "freezes". It never happens at the same record, it's very random. Sometimes after 70 records, sometimes at 200 the program quits inserting, and gets stuck. This is very annoying. My best guess is that ldap can't handle that much inserts in a short time. Code isn't the problem, as it is a random problem. Does this seem familiar to somebody or is it just me? Thanks in advance.

Each person has language set and that is the language the message is supposed to be sent in.   I am developing a application for benchmarking purposes, for which I require to create large number of http connection in a short time, I created a program in java to test how much threads is java able to create, it turns out in my 2GB single core machine, the limit is variable between 5000 and 6000 with 1 GB of memory given to JVM after which it hits outofmemoryerror with heap limit reached. It is suggested around that erlang will be able to generate much more concurrent processes, I am willing to learn erlang if it is capable of solving the problem , although I am interested in knowing can erlang be able to say generate somewhere around 100000 processes which are essentially http requests waiting for responses, in a matter of few seconds without reaching any limit like memory error etc.,

• What information about me and my system do compilers add to executeables?

  I'm currently using Microsoft Visual Studio 2010. If we say that we give 10 different people a copy of MSVC 10 and a short C++ Hello, World listing. They all create a new project using exactly the same settings, add a new cpp file with the Hello, World program and compile it. Do they all get the exactly same binary? If not, what are the exact differences? What information about my system does MSVC add to my executeable? Paranoia!
