• Java Formatter specify starting position for text

  I'm trying to position a string at a certain starting position on a line, regardless of where the previous text ended. For instance: Mandatory arguments to long options are mandatory for short options too. -a, --all do not ignore entries starting with . -A, --almost-all do not list implied . and .. The explanation of the options begin at position 30 regardless of the text preceding. How do you accomplish this with java.util.Formatter? I have tested with both the width (%30s) and precision (%.30) arguments, and neither provide the desired result.

• jQuery Click event on object added with JavaScript not working.

  I'm work on a quiz for school but I've bumped into a problem. I got a javascript file for custom radio buttons (CUSTOM FORM ELEMNTS by Ryan Fait if it's helping). The script hides the input buttons and adds custom styled spans instead. Now what I want, when I click one of these JavaScript added spans I want to remove disabled for a button called "Next Question" which when pressed takes you to the next question. The reason for this is that I don't want people to accidently got to the next question without choosing a answer. The problem is when I press the added spans nothing happens but when I press another identical span which I have added in the html it works just as intended. The span got the class radio which is the class I'm looking for in the jQuery. Why?

  How does one create a JAR file programmatically using java.util.jar.JarOutputStream? The JAR file produced by my program looks correct (it extracts fine) but when I try loading a library from it Java complains that it cannot find files which are clearly stored inside it. If I extract the JAR file and use Sun's jar command-line tool to re-compress it the resulting library works fine. In short, something is wrong with my JAR file. Please explain how to create a JAR file programmatically, complete with a manifest file.

• TeamCity Mercurial, How to handle tags and releases

  Hi First off, i'm new to Teamcity comming from CC. I have a server up and running and building my projects, so far so good :). My problem is this: Whenever I make a Mercurial Tag, I would like TeamCity to react in a special way, so that the resulting binaries/artifacts from the Tag build, are made avaliable for download (automatic release when tagging). In short can I do automated release so that when I create a Tag AND it builds successfully then the result is copied to some location X, but ONLY when I Tag. Im pretty sure that this can be done, but when I read the posts around the net and read the documentation, I tend to get a little confused about artifacts/build scripts/publishing and how to do it. Can anyone give me some hints about where/how to start or guide me to a location with a tutorial/example of how to do this? I want it soooooo bad :-D. Kind regards

• Distributing a function over a single dimension of an array in MATLAB?

  I often find myself wanting to collapse an n-dimensional matrix across one dimension, and can't figure out if there is a concise incantation I can use to do this. For example, when parsing an image, I often want to do something like this. (Note! Illustrative example only. I know about rgb2gray for this specific case.) img = imread('whatever.jpg'); s = size(img); for i=1:s(1) for j=1:s(2) bw_img = mean(img(i,j,:)); end end I would love to express this as something like: bw = on(color, 3, @mean); or bw(:,:,1) = mean(color); Is there a short way to do this?

• Attaching files to WCF REST service responses

  I have a resource that looks something like this: /users/{id}/summary?format={format} When format is "xml" or "json" I respond with a user summary object that gets automagically encoded by WCF - fine so far. But when format equals "pdf", I want my response to consist of a trivial HTTP response body and a PDF file attachment. How is this done? Hacking on WebOperationContext.Current.OutgoingResponse doesn't seem to work, and wouldn't be the right thing even if it did. Including the bits of the file in a CDATA section or something in the response isn't safe. Should I create a subclass of Message, then provide a custom IDispatchMessageFormatter that responds with it? I went a short distance down that path but ultimately found the documentation opaque. What's the right thing?

My project source tree looks like somewhat like this test$~: tree . . |-- folder | |-- hello.cpp | `-- hello.h `-- main.cpp 1 directory, 3 files test$~: The file main.cpp contains the main() function and all the functions invoked by main.cpp lie in the directory named folder So far in all my little projects I never had to put some source code under a sub-directory. What I am looking for, in short, is some gcc command for recursive compilation in sub-directories and their subdirectories and so on... This command should be invoked from the home directory of the code project.

  What is the worst real-world macros/pre-processor abuse you've ever come across (please no contrived IOCCC answers *haha*)? Please add a short snippet or story if it is really entertaining. The goal is to teach something instead of always telling people "never use macros". p.s.: I've used macros before... but usually I get rid of them eventually when I have a "real" solution (even if the real solution is inlined so it becomes similar to a macro). • How to feed an xml database with tags obtained thru html forms ?

  Hello! Not a programmer, I begin with xml, html forms and xslt on Mac. I plan to use a form to post short texts in a xhtml page and invite end users to add some annotations to the said text. The users would select a specific part of the text posted and each annotation would stand for one specific chain of characters. My goal is to consolidate the tags obtained from various user's annotations to one xml "knowledge base" containing the original text with all the revision indicators. Then I plan to use xslt sheets to product various reports based on the tags obtained. my two questions are : 1- am I dreaming ? Is it really possible to do that with xml, xforms, xslt without using java, php, ajax or other seasoned programmer's tools ? 2- What should be my focus for further explorations aiming in that direction ?   Short question, why do Assert.AreEqual(1.0, double.NaN, 0.0) pass when Assert.AreEqual(1.0, double.NaN) do not? Is it an error in MSTest or am I missing something here? Best regards, Egil. Update: Should probably add, that the reason behind my question is, that I have a bunch of unit tests that unfortunately passed due to the result of some linear algebraic matrix operation being NaN or (+/-)Infinity. The unit tests are fine, but since Assert.AreEqual on doubles with a delta will pass when actual or/and expected are NaN or Infinity, I was left to believe that the code I was testing was correct.

  Unlike the other posts about the task "delete all tables", this question is specifically about using SqlCommand to access the database. A coworker is facing the problem that no matter how it attempts it, he can't delete all tables from a database via SqlCommand. He states that he can't perform such action as long as there is an active connection - the connection by the SqlCommand itself. I believe this should be possible and easy, but I don't have much of a clue about databases so I came here to ask. It would be awesome if you could provide a short code example in C# (or any .NET language, for that matter). If you require additional information, just leave a comment.

• VSFTPD: Cannot figure this thing out...

  Alright, I've been giving this the best that I can, reading through various tutorials on google, but I cannot seem to get vsftpd running the way I want. For a short while I had it working with one account, but then that stopped and I haven't been able to get it to work since. I've since reformated and reinstall Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I used apt-get install vsftpd and that's where I am now... I'd really appreciate if anyone could help me understand exactly how this is supposed to work... How do I add FTP accounts and set their home directory to something like /var/www/public_html?

• Why TortoiseHg not show the "merge conflict"?

  Short version of the question: Since I already have TortoiseHg, I right clicked on that file trying to see the merge conflict visually, but there is no way to see it? Details: To make a simple case of merge conflict, I hg init a repo on Win 7, and then clone it to another folder. Now, in one working directory, i added the line "the code is 123", committed. And in the other folder, i did an "hg pull" and "hg update" Now, I go back to the first folder, and change "123" to "123abc", and then do an "hg commit" And then I go to the other folder and edit "123" to "123xyz" over there, and do an "hg commit", and when "hg push", it says it can't. So I try to use any visual tool to see how the conflict is like, but ... TortoiseHg doesn't seem to have any option to do that?

• network error 414 when using google translate with wordpress

  I am using a jQuery and google translate on a wordpress site. It works well unless I call a div that is repeated in the loop like in an archives page. On these pages I get a network error 414 that the request URI is too large. The archives page I have are short and the php is only generating about 5 paragraphs for each category archive. Does anyone know how I can correct this error? Is this a serverfault question?

  I need to import data from an Excel spreadsheet into SQL Server, but the data isn't in a relational/normalized format so the import wizard isn't going to cut it (as far as I know). The data is in this format: Category SubCategory Name Description Category#1 SubCategory#1 Product#1 Description#1 Category#1 SubCategory#1 Product#2 Description#2 Category#1 SubCategory#2 Product#3 Description#3 Category#1 SubCategory#2 Product#4 Description#4 Category#2 SubCategory#3 Product#5 Description#5 (apologies I'm lacking the inventiveness to come up with 'real' data at this time in the morning...) Each row contains a unique product, but the cateogry structure is duplicated. I want to import this data into three tables: Category SubCategory Product (I know SubCategory should really be contained within Category, DB was not my design) I need a way to import unique rows based on the Category and then SubCategory columns, and then when importing the other columns into Product, obtain a reference to the SubCategory based on name. Short of scripting this, is there any way to do it using the import wizard or some other tool?

Text in the cell stays visible till end, but without background. • Seeking tutorial: introduction to ODBC with Delphi

  I have a lot of embedded C/C++/Ada experience and an outdated smattering of Delphi plus some database stuff. Now I have to implement an app in Delphi which can manipulate MySql, Oracle, maybe MS Access. In short, I need ODBC. I need to programmatically created a database, define its structure and populate its contents, then later query its existence and programmatically search. I would prefer not to use 3rd party components, unless there is a compelling reason to do so (performance ought not to be an issue for the app, it won't have much data or be run often, at least not in v1.0) . Can anyone point me at a tutorial which can get me up to speed? Thanks

  I wrote a short C++ program to do XOR encryption on a file, which I may use for some personal files (if it gets cracked it's no big deal - I'm just protecting against casual viewers). Basically, I take an ASCII password and repeatedly XOR the password with the data in the file. Now I'm curious, though: if someone wanted to crack this, how would they go about it? Would it take a long time? Does it depend on the length of the password (i.e., what's the big-O)?

  I've got raw data streams from image files, like: vector<char> rawData(fileSize); ifstream inFile("image.jpg"); inFile.read(&rawData[0]); I want to parse the headers of different image formats for height and width. Is there a portable library that can can read ints, longs, shorts, etc. from the buffer/stream, converting for endianess as specified? I'd like to be able to do something like: short x = rawData.readLeShort(offset); or long y = rawData.readBeLong(offset) An even better option would be a lightweight & portable image metadata library (without the extra weight of an image manipulation library) that can work on raw image data. I've found that Exif libraries out there don't support png and gif.

• How do you make Python wait so that you can read the output?

  I've always been a heavy user of Notepad2, as it is fast, feature-rich, and supports syntax highlighting. Recently I've been using it for Python. My problem: when I finish editing a certain Python source code, and try to launch it, the screen disappears before I can see the output pop up. Is there any way for me to make the results wait so that I can read it, short of using an input() or time-delay function? Otherwise I'd have to use IDLE, because of the output that stops for you to read. (My apologies if this question is a silly one, but I'm very new at Python and programming in general.)

  I've all this kind of functions. ssize_t fuc1(int var1, void *buf, size_t count); int func2(char *charPtr, int mode, int dev); short func3( long var2); problem is that data types in C has different sizes when compiled on different machines(64bit & 32bit). This is true for even void*. For some reasons. I need to ensure that these sizes all are same on every machine(64bit & 32bit). So, how should I modify these ?
