  I'm running apache with a worker MPM and php with fastcgi. the following are my mpm limits: StartServers 5 MinSpareThreads 5 MaxSpareThreads 10 ThreadLimit 64 ThreadsPerChild 10 MaxClients 10 MaxRequestsPerChild 2000 I've also setup my php-cgi with the following: PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=5 PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS=500 I'm noticing that my average php-cgi process is using around 200+mb of RAM, even as soon as they are started. However, my php memory_limit is only 128M. How is this possible, and what can I do to lower the php-cgi memory consumption?

I want an antivirus program that I can simply right click and object and select "scan for viruses" and nothing more. Is there a reliable antivirus program out there that offers this and only this without the automatic updates, background processes, and intrusive automatic system scans? Note: this is for Windows.

• kill process but fail

  Hi, I am running a bash script as a background job. The bash script calls a time-consuming executable. If I am not wrong, the running of the bash script is the parent process and the running of the executable is the child process. I now want to stop the whole running by killing the parent process which is the background job kill -9 $(jobs -p) The terminal shows that the running of the bash script is killed. But the running of the executable still hangs on the output of top. I just wonder how to also kill the child process? Thanks and regards!

• windows 7 crash during hibernation

  At times, when I hibernate my Dell Latitude e6400 with Windows 7 (64 bit), the laptop screen goes black as it should, but then it takes several minutes before it powers down. Then, when I attempt to "resume," Windows boots up from a fresh startup, with all my work lost, and tells me that it's recovered from a serious error. What can I do to resolve this problem? Other background info: -I got a new hard drive with plenty of space about a year ago; I only use a small fraction of that space. This sometimes happens when I don't have any programs running at all. If it's relevant, I do have Dropbox and OneDrive running in the background, though. -The problem usually occurs when I hibernate just after I unplug from an external monitor to bring my laptop home, but I believe it happens at other times, too. • Apache maximum request number 256?

  I have a very good server running an Apache instance with mod_jk for proxying the request to an Application server. I'm doing a load test and although I'm sending over 600 requests, the status worker keep showing this: 256 requests currently being processed, 0 idle workers I'm using 'prefork MPM' <IfModule prefork.c> ServerLimit 2048 StartServers 5 MinSpareServers 5 MaxSpareServers 10 MaxClients 1000 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> Is there a compiled limit for Apache to handle just 256 request or what would I be missing?

• Skype message sync and notifications - Windows 8

  The problem is that my messages don't seem to sync and neither do I get notifications from the Windows Store App. I have both, the desktop program and the Windows Store App, the problem is that whenever someone messages me I do not receive a notification of the App but I get one from the desktop program. The Skype app is running in the background and does not have disabled the notifications neither have turned on sleep notifications. I have to manually open the app and moreover, open the chat window of the one who is talking to me, then wait like 10 minutes and then the chat will get syncronized. in short: Notifications don't work even: if computer unlocked and Skype is running in background if computer unlocked and Skype is running in foreground These doesn't seem to help: Reboot doesn't affects skype. Having only the App opened. Uninstalling/reinstalling Is there a way to fix this? or is this an issue with the Skype app in Windows 8?

• Getting jerky backgrounds on Win7 on iMac 27'' 2560x1440

  I installed Win7 on bootcamp on my new iMac 27'' (ATI videocard) and everything was good until recently I noticed that the default win7 background (then one on the background on login) looked jerky. When I say jerky I mean the kind of jerky you get if you can't display enough colours, and instead of nice fading shades you just get stripes and jerky patterns. I am on native resolution but even if I go down to 1920x1080 I get the same. This might have happened after a firmware update but as I don't use windows very often I am not too sure it's what caused it. Oh, and when I am playing games everything looks OK (as in not jerky!). Any help appreciated!

I read in the NFS man page that the retry defaults should handle this: retry=n The number of minutes to retry an NFS mount operation in the foreground or background before giving up. The default value for forground mounts is 2 minutes. The default value for background mounts is 10000 minutes, which is roughly one week. I have tested this, but it doesn't appear to work. Am I missing something? All servers are RHEL 5.4. Cheers z0mbix

  Based on many online sources, in serving static files, Apache2 will create new thread on every different connection... results in resource hungry But how about serving PHP through Apache2 (mod_php, MPM worker, etc)? Does apache will also open new thread like serving static files? (AFAIK, in nginx php-fpm, we can set the max thread, but I dont know how many connection per thread) I'm planning to use Apache2 in serving PHP, and hope it will be same as nginx PHP-FPM or even better in resource usage and performance.

They only need access to a few folders. Aside from joining them to the "Domain Guests" group and granting them access only to the folders specified. Are there any other issues to be aware of? • Is there a way to prevent output from backgrounded tasks from covering the command line in a shell?

  I would like to be able to run task(s) in the background of a shell and not have their output to stdout or stderr cover the command line at the bottom. Frequently I need to run other commands to interact with the background processes and would like to do so from the same shell without having to open up another terminal or using multiplexer to split the terminal like screen. Ideally there would be some setting that I just don't know about (I commonly use bash or ksh), but a new or different shell or a script would be fine by me. I'm open to any suggestions and appreciate any help, thanks.

• Weird graphical artefacts on OS X Snow Leopard.

  Since a couple of days I experience some strange graphical artefacts on Snow Leopard. Usually after a certain uptime, the background image would show some strange colours at some place. This could be reverted by reloading the background image. But the problem would appear again after rebooting (and waiting for an indefinite time). Sometimes, the shadow of windows would also have some artefacts; and this time the application switcher is completely distorted. Any ideas where I need to search for a solution of the problem? Edit: Model: MacBook Gen. 3.1 / all updates installed Update: After not having used Safari for a while, the problem has not occurred anymore (at least not after 20 days of uptime). Could well be that the problem had its origin in Safari or a Safari-related plugin. (Possibly Flash or Click-to-Flash as it did not happen with both deactivated, though the running time with this configuration might have been to short to be of any validity.)

  I use the master password feature of Firefox, and I also use SSH keys to login to a bunch of UNIX machines. For SSH, there is a very useful application called ssh-agent that runs in the background knowing the required information about unlocking the key so you don't have to type the question every single time you want to connect. I open and close Firefox a lot, so I was curious, is there a way to have Firefox run in the background (preferrably doing nothing, but the whole process would be fine I guess as well) so that I don't have to type my master password every single time I open Firefox? • How to convert poor quality bitmap image to vector?

  I'm designing a website for a group which has lost the original digital image for their logo. The only file they have of it is a jpg which was embedded into a word document. The image has everything possible wrong with it: Anti-aliased onto a white background where it should be transparent Image artefacts Resized downwards poorly. Lines that should be straight and solid aren't. I've currently used the wand tool to get rid of the white background, and stuck it on the website, but it's poor quality makes it stick out like a sore thumb. I need a few different sizes of it to use, so how would I go about creating a vector image based on it?

• X-ming, Ubuntu apps - getting the Ubuntu style/theme to load

  I am running X-ming on Windows 7 and using putty to ssh into an Ubuntu system. On the Ubuntu system I use the command: $ gnome-terminal & to display a terminal back on the Windows box. When I do this I don't get the standard Ubuntu style, i.e. dark purple background, Mono font, solid cursor (which I've configured in the Gnome Control Center.) Instead I get a very plain style - white background, blinking cursor, very small font. However, if I run gnome-control-center and then click on, say, the Keyboard icon, the terminal window will be reconfigured with the Ubuntu style with my customizations (e.g. block cursor vs. blinking cursor.) Just starting one of the control applets seems to trigger this style change. My question is: How can I trigger this style change more directly - without having to launch the Gnome Control center and launching one of the configuration applets?

To run kippo, I do: su kippo ~/kippo/start.sh The contents of start.sh is simply: #!/bin/sh echo -n "Starting kippo in background..." authbind --deep twistd -y kippo.tac -l log/kippo.log --pidfile kippo.pid Which starts up a background process for kippo. What can I do to make this automatically run on startup? Do I need to add a script that calls this in /etc/init.d?

• Sendmail Tuning For Batch Mail Jobs

  I have a webservers that send out emails to a sendmail relay server as a batch job. The emails need to be accepted by the relay sendmail server as fast as possible, however, they do not need to go out (be relayed) very quickly. I am seeing a couple timeouts once and a while from the webserver trying to connect to the relay server. The load currently is about 30 emails a second for a couple minutes. There are quite a few tuning options for sendmail in the sendmail tuning guide. What I am focusing on now is the Delivery Mode: Delivery Mode There are a number of delivery modes that sendmail can operate in, set by the DeliveryMode ( d) configuration option. These modes specify how quickly mail will be delivered. Legal modes are: i deliver interactively (synchronously) b deliver in background (asynchronously) q queue only (don't deliver) d defer delivery attempts (don't deliver) There are tradeoffs. Mode i gives the sender the quickest feedback, but may slow down some mailers and is hardly ever necessary. Mode b delivers promptly but can cause large numbers of processes if you have a mailer that takes a long time to deliver a message. Mode q minimizes the load on your machine, but means that delivery may be delayed for up to the queue interval. Mode d is identical to mode q except that it also prevents lookups in maps including the -D flag from working during the initial queue phase; it is intended for ``dial on demand'' sites where DNS lookups might cost real money. Some simple error messages (e.g., host unknown during the SMTP protocol) will be delayed using this mode. Mode b is the usual default. If you run in mode q (queue only), d (defer), or b (deliver in background) sendmail will not expand aliases and follow .forward files upon initial receipt of the mail. This speeds up the response to RCPT commands. Mode i should not be used by the SMTP server. I currently have the CentOS default modes: Sendmail.cf: DeliveryMode=background Submit.cf: DeliveryMode=i Is sendmail.cf/mc for outgoing email from relay (to the intertubes) and sumbit.cf/mc for incoming eamil (from my webservers). Would it make sense to change the outgoing delivery mode to queue? If I did, what would the outbound email flow behave like? If this is the right thing to do, can anyone show me example mc configurations for this change? If it isn't, what recommendations are there for these constraints?

• Windows Server 2003 W3SVC Failing, Brute Force attack possibly the cause

  This week my website has disappeared twice for no apparent reason. I logged onto my server (Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2) and restarted the World Web Publishing service, website still down. I tried restarting a few other services like DNS and Cold Fusion and the website was still down. In the end I restarted the server and the website reappeared. Last night the website went down again. This time I logged on and looked at the event log. SCARY STUFF! There were hundreds of these: Event Type: Information Event Source: TermService Event Category: None Event ID: 1012 Date: 30/01/2012 Time: 15:25:12 User: N/A Computer: SERVER51338 Description: Remote session from client name a exceeded the maximum allowed failed logon attempts. The session was forcibly terminated. At a frequency of around 3 -5 a minute. At about the time my website died there was one of these: Event Type: Information Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1074 Date: 30/01/2012 Time: 19:36:14 User: N/A Computer: SERVER51338 Description: A worker process with process id of '6308' serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' has requested a recycle because the worker process reached its allowed processing time limit. Which is obviously what killed the web service. There were then a few of these: Event Type: Error Event Source: TermDD Event Category: None Event ID: 50 Date: 30/01/2012 Time: 20:32:51 User: N/A Computer: SERVER51338 Description: The RDP protocol component "DATA ENCRYPTION" detected an error in the protocol stream and has disconnected the client. Data: 0000: 00 00 04 00 02 00 52 00 ......R. 0008: 00 00 00 00 32 00 0a c0 ....2..À 0010: 00 00 00 00 32 00 0a c0 ....2..À 0018: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........ 0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........ 0028: 92 01 00 00 ... With no more of the first error type. I am concerned that someone is trying to brute force their way into my server. I have disabled all the accounts apart from the IIS ones and Administrator (which I have renamed). I have also changed the password to an even more secure one. I don't know why this brute force attack caused the webservice to stop and I don't know why restarting the service didn't fix the problem. What should I do to make sure my server is secure and what should I do to make sure the webserver doesn't go down any more? Thanks.

• load-causing processes disappearing from "top" ps -o pcpu shows bogus numbers

  I administer a large number of servers, and I have this problem only with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS: I run a server under normal load (say load average 3.0 on an 8-core server). The "top" command shows processes taking certain % of CPU that cause this load average: say PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 11008 mysql 20 0 25.9g 22g 5496 S 67 76.0 643539:38 mysqld ps -o pcpu,pid -p11008 %CPU PID 53.1 11008 , everything is consistent. The all of the sudden, the process causing the load average disappears from "top", but the process continues to run normally (albeit with a slight performance decrease), and the system load average becomes somewhat higher. The output of ps -o pcpu becomes bogus: # ps -o pcpu,pid -p11008 %CPU PID 317910278 1587 This happened to at least 5 different severs (different brand new IBM System X hardware), each running different software: one httpd 2.2, one mysqld 5.1, and one Twisted Python TCP servers. Each time the kernel was between 2.6.32-32-server and 2.6.32-40-server. I updated some machines to 2.6.32-41-server, and it has not happened on those yet, but the bug is rare (once every 60 days or so). On a normal server, these numbers are advancing, every time I check the /proc/PID/stat. On a buggy server, these numbers are stuck at a ridiculously high value like 4611685932654088833, and it's not changing. Has anyone encountered this bug?
