• SQL validation!

  I am pretty new in SQL so this may be a stupid question... I have a form in PHP which fills in few fields in my SQL table. I have this code: $sql="INSERT INTO $tbl_name (app_name, app_path, short_desc, full_desc) VALUES ('$_POST[app_name]', '$_POST[app_path]', '$_POST[short_desc]', '$_POST[full_desc]')"; But even app_name and app_path are NOT NULL columns, the query can be executed if there is no text in these fields in the form. So, my question is: How to stop the execution of the query if there is no text in the NOT NULL fields ?

• Would like help with LOGON Trigger

  I've created a logon trigger in MS SQL that needs to check dm_exec_sessions for a login. This login is the user listed in the connection string and has owner right to the database. If the login is verified, I need it to update a specific table and send an email. So far I've done just the following piece and it disabled my web site. The error I get is: "Logon failed for login 'dev' due to trigger execution. Changed database context to 'mydatabase'. Changed language setting to us_english." Any idea what I did wrong? • best place to store .net assemblies

  To give a scenario, let us simply assume an engine that loads plug-ins and exposes features in the plug-in. User 1 uploads a plug-in which allows implements Act 1 User 2 uploads a plug-in which allows implements Act 2 A plug-in in this case is .net assembly. Now in this scenario, if we have to store all the assemblies - what would be the best place? Also, the plug-in would require to be versioned so execution can happen of a particular version. Further considering the plug-in engine is installed on multiple machines or on same machine as different instances (similar to sql server). Would a centralized database (sql server 2005) with a table to store all the assembly be a good idea (centralized backup etc.,) (assembly size would be around 500kb to 1MB)

• Could someone explain __declspec(naked) please?

  I'm looking into porting a script engine written for Windows to Linux; it's for Winamp's visualization platform AVS. I'm not sure if it's even possible at the moment. From what I can tell the code is taking the addresses of the C functions nseel_asm_atan and nseel_asm_atan_end and storing them inside a table that it can reference during code execution. I've looked at MS's documentation, but I'm unsure what __declspec(naked) really does. What is prolog and epilog code mentioned in the documentation? Is that related to Windows calling conventions? Is this portable?   I want to allocate my buffers according to memory available. Such that, when I do processing and memory usage goes up, but still remains in available memory limits. Is there a way to get available memory (I don't know will virtual or physical memory status will make any difference ?). And method has to be platform Independent as its going to be used on Windows, OS X, Linux and AIX. (And if possible then I would also like to allocate some of available memory for my application, someone it doesn't change during the execution).

  Is there a way in java to create a string with a specified number of a specified character? In my case I would need to create a string with 10 spaces.   Imagine a situation where tasks are being added to scheduledthreadpoolexecutor. Each of these tasks will keep on running at different periodic intervals. Although all such tasks will not be running at the same time because each is set at different intervals, there may be a situation where a high number of threads are competing for execution. Is there any restriction on total number of threads ? It seems there is a restriction on the total number of idle threads. And does this concept of idle thread imply that long running tasks (thread) may be destroyed and recreated when needed ?

  Is there a way to drop into a read-eval-print loop from inside PHP code during execution, in a script that was run from the command line? That is, like php -a or phpsh? Or do I have to re-implement a REPL from scratch? I can't find any way to do it. To clarify: the reason why I need to do this is that I want to automatically include all the files in my project once the REPL starts, instead of having to manually include everything by hand.

  I know instrumentation is a technique to add trace code dynamically into the methods to enable tracing and debugging. I was wondering if this is only a "Trace" option, hard coded into the CLR to add only trace code, or is there the ability to add any code to the methods? For example, I want to check for a condition in the beginning of every single method call in a certain class (say for permissions). Can I do this via adding dynamic code to the beginning of the methods in execution time? I'm not sure how this trace "instrumentation" thing works, but I'm wondering if this can be used for other goals too, or not.

• Confusion using MYSQLI

  I just started using mysqli API for PHP. Apparently, every time an object of the class MYSQLI is instantiated, it can setup a connection to the database as it connects to the server unlike mysql_connect, which connects to the server first and then you are required to specify the database to query. Now this is a good problem if the db exists, in my case, the db does not exist on the first ever connection to the server/execution of the problem, hence I must connect without specifying the database, which is fine, since the msyqli constructor does not make this database mandatory. My challenge is essentially, how do I check if the database exists before attempting the first connection. The only way to really do this would be to establish a conection to the server and then use the result of the following query to gauge if the database exists: SELECT COUNT(*) AS `exists` FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.SCHEMATA WHERE SCHEMATA.SCHEMA_NAME="dbname" ; If this returns true, then the database exists, but now the challenge is how do I get the mysqli object to query this database rather than having to prefix the name of the database in the query.   Hi, Every C++ books that I've read says something like this:- All C++ programs have a main() function. main() function is the starting point for all C++ programs. All C++ programs begin its execution from the main() function. However, I found that Windows programs written using MFC do not have any main() function. It use WinMain() function as the program starting point. So can I say that Windows program written using MFC is not a C++ program? Then, what kind of program it is? Thanks.

• Is Private Bytes >> Working Set?

  OK, this may sound weird, but here goes. There are 2 computers, A (Pentium D) and B (Quad Core) with almost the same amount of RAM running Windows XP. If I run the same code on both computers, the allocated private bytes in A never goes down resulting in a crash later on. In B it looks like the private bytes is constantly deallocated and everything looks fine. In both computers, the working set is deallocated and allocated similarly. Could this be an issue with manifests or DLLs (system)? I'm clueless. Note: I observed the utilized memory with Process Explorer. Question: During execution (where we have several allocations and deallocations) is it normal for the number of private bytes to be much bigger (1.5 GB vs 70 MB) than the working set?

• Do I need something more to run NUnit under any directory?

  I have NUnit installed at this directory. C:\Program Files\NUnit 2.5.5\bin\net-2.0 When I try to run my unit test (mut.dll) in some random directory. I get the following error. I have to copy the mut.dll under the NUnit directory in order to run it. ProcessModel: Default DomainUsage: Single Execution Runtime: net-2.0 Could not load file or assembly 'nunit.framework, Version=2.5.5.10112, Culture=n eutral, PublicKeyToken=96d09a1eb7f44a77' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. What's wrong? Is there anything that I have to configure to run NUNit under any directory?

  Hi, I am developing a console application. This application generates a self signed certificate and installs it in the current machine's certificate store. The steps invlolved are :- Generate a certificate Create a pfx file Install the pfx file For these steps i would need a password for protecting the private key and the pfx file. However these passwords are used only during the execution of the exe. Should I auto generate a password using some random number generation algorithm or accept the password as input from the user? • Securely using exec with PHP to run ffmpeg

  I would like to run ffmpeg from PHP for video encoding purposes. I was thinking of using the exec or passthru commands. However, I have been warned that enabling these functions is a security risk. In the words of my support staff: The directive 'disable_functions' is used to disable any functions that allow the execution of system commands. This is for more security of the server. These PHP functions can be used to crack the server if not used properly. I'm guessing that if exec is enabled, then someone could (possibly) execute an arbitrary unix command. Does anyone know of a secure way to run ffmpeg from PHP? By the way, I'm on a dedicated server. Thanks ahead of time!

• PHP file modification time in milliseconds

  I there, I am currently writing a unit test which asserts that a file did not get modified. The test code execution takes less than one second and therefore I would like to know if it is possible to retrieve the file modification time in milliseconds. filemtime() function returns the UNIX timestamp in seconds. My current solution is using the sleep(1) function which will assure me that 1 second passed before checking if it was modified or not. I don't like that solution since it slows down the test by a great deal. I cannot assert the content equality via get_file_contents() since the data that can be rewritten would be the same. I am guessing it is impossible, is it?

• What to do when using Contract.Assert(true) and the method must return something?

  I have a bit of code with the following logic: //pseudo-code foreach (element in elementList) { if (element is whatever) return element; } } In theory, there is always one element that is whatever, so this method should pose no problems. In any case, I've put an assertion on the end of the method just to be sure: //pseudo-code foreach (element in elementList) { if (element is whatever) return element; } } Contract.Assert(true, "Invalid state!"); The problem is that as this method has to return something, and the compiler doesn't understand that the assertion will break the program execution. Before using Contracts, in these kind of situations, I used to throw an Exception, which solved the problem. How would you handle this with Contract.Assert()? Returning null or default(element_type) after the Contract.Assert() call knowing it will never be called and shutting up the compiler? Or is there any other more elegant way of doing this? Thanks

• Maven + Tomcat acceleration

  I am writing a web application with Maven in the Eclipse IDE, and use Tomcat servlet container. So, I run Maven like this: mvn clean compile. It is reasonable that after this oepration I must re-run Tomcat so it can reinitialize the context (Sysdeo Tomcat launcher helps a lot). The problem is Maven execution and subsequebt Tomcat re-running takes noticable amount of time (like 10+ seconds for Maven and 20+ sec. for Tomcat, because of logging, Hibernate mappings, etc.) every time I do it. Is there any automated and more faster solution for these two operatioins? As I see it, a way better solution can be moving re-compiled classes only to the target dir.

• Rscript does not recognize setGeneric function

  I am trying to convert an R script into something that a client can run in batch mode. My code uses generic functions and one snippet which is near the beginning goes like: setGeneric("testInput", function(inputData, params = list()) standardGeneric("testInput")) I've been using R CMD BATCH and it works fine. However I couldn't find an easy way to make my script print the output on the console, so based on that (and suggestion that Rscript.exe is the "proper" way to run R batch files) I decided to switch to Rscript. However when running the very same .R file with Rscript I get the following: Error: could not find function "setGeneric" Execution halted I know there is probably a trivial reason behind this but I just cannot figure it out. • Trying to read keyboard input without blocking (Windows, C++)

  I'm trying to write a Windows console application (in C++ compiled using g++) that will execute a series of instructions in a loop until finished OR until ctrl-z (or some other keystroke) is pressed. The code I'm currently using to catch it isn't working (otherwise I wouldn't be asking, right?): if(kbhit() && getc(stdin) == 26) //The code to execute when ctrl-z is pressed If I press a key, it is echoed and the application waits until I press Enter to continue on at all. With the value 26, it doesn't execute the intended code. If I use something like 65 for the value to catch, it will reroute execution if I press A then Enter afterward. Is there a way to passively check for input, throwing it out if it's not what I'm looking for or properly reacting when it is what I'm looking for? ..and without having to press Enter afterward?
