• ASP.Net / MySQL : Translating content into several languages

  I have an ASP.Net website which uses a MySQL database for the back end. The website is an English e-commerce system, and we are looking at the possibility of translating it into about five other languages (French, Spanish etc). We will be getting human translators to perform the translation - we've looked at automated services but these aren't good enough. The static text on the site (e.g. headings, buttons etc) can easily be served up in multiple languages via .Net's built in localization features (resx files etc). The thing that I'm not so sure about it how best to store and retrieve the multi-language content in the database. For example, there is a products table that includes these fields... productId (int) categoryId (int) title (varchar) summary (varchar) description (text) features (text) The title, summary, description and features text would need to be available in all the different languages. Here are the two options that I've come up with... Create additional field for each language For example we could have titleEn, titleFr, titleEs etc for all the languages, and repeat this for all text columns. We would then adapt our code to use the appropriate field depending on the language selected. This feels a bit hacky, and also would lead to some very large tables. Also, if we wanted to add additional languages in the future it would be time consuming to add even more columns. Use a lookup table We could create a new table with the following format... textId | languageId | content ------------------------------- 10 | EN | Car 10 | FR | Voiture 10 | ES | Coche 11 | EN | Bike 11 | FR | Vélo We'd then adapt our products table to reference the appropriate textId for the title, summary, description and features instead of having the text stored in the product table. This seems much more elegant, but I can't think of a simple way of getting this data out of the database and onto the page without using complex SQL statements. Of course adding new languages in the future would be very simple compared to the previous option. I'd be very grateful for any suggestions about the best way to achieve this! Is there any "best practice" guidance out there? Has anyone done this before?

  Hello! I have two tables of activities on a page: Views & Comments. Views id timestamp project_id user_id page_id Comments id timestamp project_id user_id page_id comment Pages id project_id title Now pages are related to projects: Projects id account_id title I am trying to create a summary page that combines views and comments ordered by time (so that the most recent views/comments are at the beginning, grouped by projects. Also, only projects for a specific account. So the result could potentially be: Project 1 View 5 (June 20th) View 4 (June 18th) Comment 5 (June 15th) Comment 4 (June 14th) Comment 3 (June 12th) Project 3 View 3 (June 10th) View 2 (June 8th) Comment 2 (June 7th) Project 2 View 1 (June 5th) Comment 1 (June 4th) If you could help with how to do this using SQL (or even doctrine) that would be awesome. • CRUD Question with Codeigniter

  I have a database with blog entries in it. The desired output I am trying to acheive is 3 entrys displayed using the css3 multi paragraph and then another 3(or more) formatted with the codeigniter Character_limiter. So I need 3 displays formatted one way and 3+ formatted another way on the same page. So far this is what I have, but i do not know how to format the sql to achieve what I want. • Understanding the passing of data/life of a script in web development/CodeIgniter

  I hope I worded the title accurately enough but I typically use Java and don't have much experience in Web Development/PHP/CodeIgniter. I have a difficult time understanding the life cycle of a script as I found out trying to implement a certain feature to a website I am developing (as a means of learning how to). I'll first describe the feature I tried implementing and then the problem I ran into that made me question my fundamental understanding of how scripts work since I'm used to typical OOP. Ok so here goes... I have a webpage that has 2 basic tasks a user can do, create and delete an entry. What I attempted to implement was a way to time a user how long it takes them to complete a certain task. The way I did this was have a homepage where there would be a list of tasks a user to choose from (in this case 2, create and delete). A user would click a task which would link to the 'true' homepage where the user then would be expected to complete the task. Now there's no error in the code but it doesn't do what I expect of it and the reason I assume why is because that each time a function of the script is called via a new page it is NOT the same instance of the script called previously so any previously created objects are no longer there. This confuses me and leaves me quite unsure of how to implement this gracefully. Some ways I would guess of how to do this is by passing the necessary data through the URL or have data saved in a database and retrieve it later to compare the times. What would be a recommended way to do, not just this, but anything that needs previously created data? Also, am I correct to think that a script is only 'alive' for one webpage at a time? Thanks!

• What is the default fontsize, fontname and shadow for titles in Navigation Bar?

  I'm trying to have a button on the self.navigationItem.rightButton that toggles a segmented control that is placed in self.navgivationItem.titleView .. this will however remove the title that is first set by self.title when the navbar is created .. I dont know if my approach is bad but I figured I could rotate between a UILabel and the Segmented Control in the titleView. It works as I would like it to, however I cant figure out what size and font and shadowoffset and shadowcolor the default titles in a navigation bar is .. could you help me with a solution that either not force me to override the navigationItem.titleView or help me figure out the information needed to make a UILabel look exactly like the default titles. Thankful for any help.

The process is as follows: (1) The site's user enters a search phrase; (2) The search results page searched the site's database, and returns the page title as a link, and a short snippet from each search "hit", with the search phrase highlighted.   I'm slowly getting up to speed with jQuery and am starting to want to abstract my code. I'm running into problems trying to define click events at page load. HTTP/1.1 502 Bad Gateway I've read that the above code is dependant on Twitter beign available and I know it gets rather busy sometimes. Is there either a better way of receiving twits, or is there any kind of error trapping i could do to just to display "tweets are currently unavailable..." ind of message rather than causing an error. I'm usnig ModX CMS so any parse error kills the site rather than just ouputs a warning. thanks.

• How to align floated elements such that their bottoms match

  I'm writing a web page where I show a title and a date over some text. My HTML: <div class="post"> <h2>Post 1</h2> <span class="date">February 28, 2011</span> <div class="post-content"> ... </div> </div> My css: .post h2 { float: left; } .date { float: right; } .post-content { clear: both; } What I want to do is vertically align the title and date such that their bottoms match. Right now they don't: I tried wrapping the two text elements in a div, setting the div's position to relative, and using absolute positioning on the two text elements (and taking out the float declarations). That didn't work because the top margin is not preserved due to the wrapper div collapsing, even though I gave it a clearfix class.

  I have this query: SELECT g.title, g.asin, g.platform_id, r.rank FROM games g INNER JOIN ranks r ON ( g.id = r.game_id ) ORDER BY r.rank DESC LIMIT 5` Now, this is my JOIN using Zend_Db_Select but it gives me array error $query = $this-select(); $query-from(array('g' = 'games'), array()); $query-join(array('r' = 'ranks'), 'g.id = r.game_id', array('g.title', 'g.asin', 'g.platform_id', 'r.rank')); $query-order('r.rank DESC'); $query-limit($top); $resultRows = $this-fetchAll($query); return $resultRows; Anyone know what I could be doing wrong? I want to get all the columns in 'games' to show and the 'rank' column in the ranks table.

• iPhone SDK - Display more information about a selected CustomCell (custom UITableViewCell)

  If got a CustomCell loaded using: NSArray *nibObjects = [[NSBundle mainBundle] loadNibNamed:@"CustomCell" owner:nil options:nil]; I have no problems with the tableview but when I select a row I want display more information on that row(like facebook app)... using the typical "show more". At the beginning the row show "title" and "description". When I select that row i want to show "title", "description" and a webview... and, of course, make the row bigger to accommodate that objects. Maybe changing this CustomCell by another bigger CustomCell? I have no idea where to start. Thanks. Sorry for my english :S

• Validators are not working anymore in Zend Framework?

I suspect this might be due to zend updates.. Does anyone face this problem?

  What's the shortest, one-liner way to list all methods defined with attr_accessor? I would like to make it so, if I have a class MyBaseClass, anything that extends that, I can get the attr_accessor's defined in the subclasses. Something like this: class MyBaseClass < Hash def attributes # ?? end end class SubClass < MyBaseClass attr_accessor :id, :title, :body end puts SubClass.new.attributes.inspect #=> [id, title, body] What about to display just the attr_reader and attr_writer definitions?
