    i've setup a forwarding zone on a RHEL6 Bind server like this: zone "office.local" IN { type forward; forward only; forwarders { 192.168.0.2; 192.168.0.3; }; }; when i try to query using dig @127.0.0.1 monitorsms.office.local i see the following message in the syslog: client 127.0.0.1#39376: query: monitorsms.office.local IN A + (127.0.0.1) validating @0x7ff7640357d0: monitorsms.office.local A: bad cache hit (monitorsms.office.local/DS) google tells me, that there is an issue with DNSSEC, but both servers do not have DNSSEC configured and thus do not send any DNSSEC records. What's wrong with my configuration?

By far and away the most common technique deployed as carefully isolating work from home life. Carol writes: I love working from home and have done so for 6 years now. I have a routine just as if I was going to an office, except my commute is 12 steps. I get ready for work, grab my purse and smart phone and go to up the steps to my office. I maintain a separate phone line and voice mail for work that I cannot answer from anywhere but my work desk. I use call forwarding when I travel so only my office phone number is published. I have VOIP phone service so I can forward calls from the internet if I forget, or need to change where the phone is forwarded. I do have a wired and wireless head set so I can go get a cold drink if on one of those long boring conference calls. I plan my ‘get off from work’ time and try to stick to it, as with any job some days I am late getting off, but it all works out. I make sure my office is for work only, any other computer play time is in a different part of the house on different computer. My office has laptop, dock, couple of monitors, multipurpose printer, fax, scanner, file cabinets – just like the office at a company. I just also happen to have a couple of golden retrievers that come to work with me and usually lay quietly until 5, and yes they know it is 5pm sometimes before I do. For me, one of the biggest concerns when working from home is not being unproductive, but the danger of never stopping work. You could keep going and going because let’s face it – the company will let you do it, so I set myself up to prevent that and maintain a separateness.   • Just how slow should my VPN be?

    I have a VPN setup between a remote office with 2 ADSL connections (8Mb downstream, 512Kb upstream) and a main office with a 10Mb EFM connection (10Mb both up and down). The VPN is an IPSec connection using a DrayTek 2930 router for the ADSL and a DrayTek 3200 router at the EFM end. However, I'm unable to get speeds over this connection (tested with iperf) of anything over 600Kb or so down from the main office (traffic will pretty much always be from the main office to the remote office) Whilst I realise that there is an overhead and I'm never going to get the "full" bandwidth available over this VPN, I'd like to think that there's something I should be looking at that may help improve it. I've tried using the DrayTek's built-in "VPN Trunking" features which are supposed to load-balance connections, but this doesn't seem to improve matters much. I guess my question is - is this the kind of performance I should expect from this kind of setup and I'll just have to live with it, or should I be able to squeeze something more out of it through some VPN magic?

    My central office and remote offices are connected to each other over site to site ipsec vpn. We use Fortigate firewalls and everything is working fine. On the other hand, only central office is also connected to another company's network over ipsec vpn as well. In this situation, everything is also fine and employees at the central office is able to reach the other company's resources without problem.   • StackOverFlowException - but oviously NO recursion/endless loop

    Hi there, I'm now blocked by this problem the entire day, read thousands of google results, but nothing seems to reflect my problem or even come near to it... i hope any of you has a push into the right direction for me. I wrote a client-server-application (so more like 2 applications) - the client collects data about his system, as well as a screenshot, serializes all this into a XML stream (the picture as a byte[]-array]) and sends this to the server in regular intervals. The server receives the stream (via tcp), deserializes the xml to an information-object and shows the information on a windows form. This process is running stable for about 20-25 minutes at a submission interval of 3 seconds. When observing the memory usage there's nothing significant to see, also kinda stable. But after these 20-25 mins the server throws a StackOverflowException at the point where it deserializes the tcp-stream, especially when setting the Image property from the byte[]-array. I would have assumed that because new adds more complexity to the execution of a function by getting prototypes involved, it would be slower.     Say, I have a class: class M { public int val; And also a + operator inside it: public static M operator +(M a, M b) { M c = new M(); c.val = a.val + b.val; return c; } } And I've got a List of the objects of the class: List<M> ms = new List(); M obj = new M(); obj.val = 5; ms.Add(obj); Some other object: M addie = new M(); addie.val = 3; I can do this: ms[0] += addie; and it surely works as I expect - the value in the list is changed. But if I want to do M fromList = ms[0]; fromList += addie; it doesn't change the value in ms for obvious reasons. But intuitively I expect ms[0] to also change after that. Really, I pick the object from the list and then I increase it's value with some other object. So, since I held a reference to ms[0] in fromList before addition, I want still to hold it in fromList after performing it. Are there any ways to achieve that?

  • Teamcity build agent gives 504 gateway timeout

    I have a new teamcity build agent machine, which when started up tries to connect to the build server and fails. It never shows up in the connected, disconnected or unauthorised agents tabs of the build server web interface. The logs on the build agent show that it fails to connect with a 504 gateway timeout. Other VMS with similar configuration can connect fine and do not report this error. What can possibly be preventing this connection?

  • How much network latency is "typical" for east - west coast USA?

    At the moment we're trying to decide whether to move our datacenter from the west coast to the east coast. However, I am seeing some disturbing latency numbers from my west coast location to the east coast. Here's a sample result, retrieving a small .png logo file in Google Chrome and using the dev tools to see how long the request takes: West coast to east coast: 215 ms latency, 46 ms transfer time, 261 ms total West coast to west coast: 114 ms latency, 41 ms transfer time, 155 ms total It makes sense that Corvallis, OR is geographically closer to my location in Berkeley, CA so I expect the connection to be a bit faster.. but I'm seeing an increase in latency of +100ms when I perform the same test to the NYC server. That seems .. excessive to me. Particularly since the time spent transferring the actual data only increased 10%, yet the latency increased 100%! That feels... wrong... to me. I found a few links here that were helpful (through Google no less!) ... Does routing distance affect performance significantly? How does geography affect network latency? Latency in Internet connections from Europe to USA ... but nothing authoritative. So, is this normal? It doesn't feel normal. What is the "typical" latency I should expect when moving network packets from the east coast <--> west coast of the USA?

  • Server Names Inside Private Network

    Our office has a private network, where any requests on a (pre-determined) public IP are forwarded to a private IP inside said network. On that private IP, we've got a server running several services, including HTTP servers, and SCM systems. We only control our private network, having no control on the public IP configuration. We bought a domain name, and pointed it to that public IP, so people can access our services from the outside. But, when inside the office, people can't use that DNS name, because the server and any other hosts inside the network share the same public IP! For desktops, inside the office network, dealing with names is really easy: one entry on the hosts file and we're done. However, for laptops, that keep going in and out, and need to access services inside the office, the naming is really annoying. I don't know the "standard" process for dealing with these kind of situations. I've considered installing BIND in the office, and make people configure their wireless and wired connections to use that DNS server. What is the correct approach in this situation? If using BIND (or any other DNS server) is the answer, how should I configure it so that people inside the office can use it to get our custom names, and get forwarded to the ISP DNS when trying to reach the internet?

  • Cooling Server Closet - No A/C Is Possible

    We're moving into a new office in an old building in London (that's England :) and are walling off a 2m x 1.3m area where the router & telephone equipment currently terminates to use as a server closet. The closet will contain: 2 24-port switches 1 router 1 VSDL modem 1 Dell desktop 1 4-bay NAS 1 HP micro-server 1 UPS Miscellaneous minor telephony boxes. There is no central A/C in the office and there never will be. We can install ducting to the outside quite easily - it's only a couple of metres to the windows, which face a courtyard. My question is whether installing an extractor fan with ducting to the window should be sufficient for cooling? Would an intake fan and intake duct (from the window, too) be required? We don't want to leave a gap in the closet door as that'll let noise out into the office. If we don't have to put a portable A/C unit into the closet, that'd be perfect. The office has about 12 people; London is temperate, average maximum in August is 31 Celsius, 25 Celsius is more typical. The same equipment runs fine in our current office (same building as new office, also no A/C) but it isn't in an enclosed space. I can see us putting say one Dell 2950 tower server into the closet, but no more than that. So, sustained power consumption in the closet would currently be about 800w (I'm guessing); possibly in the future 2kw. The closet will have a ceiling and no windows and be well-insulated. We don't care if the equipment runs hot, so long as it runs and we don't hear it.

  • Difference in performance: local machine VS amazon medium instance

    I see a drastic difference in performance matrix when i run it with apache benchmark (ab) in my local machine VS production hosted in amazon medium instance. Same concurrent requests (5) and same total number of requests (111) has been run against both. Amazon has better memory than my local machine. But there are 2 CPUs in my local machine vs 1 CPU in m1.medium. My internet speed is very low at the moment, I am getting Transfer rate as 25.29KBps. How can I improve the performance ? Do not know how to interpret Connect, Processing, Waiting and total in ab output.   • AWS elastic load balancer basic issues

    I have an array of EC2 t1.micro instances behind a load balancer and each node can manage ~100 concurrent users before it starts to get wonky. i would THINK if i have 2 such instances it would allow my network to manage 200 concurrent users... apparently not. When i really slam the server (blitz.io) with a full 275 concurrents, it behaves the same as if there is just one node. it goes from 400ms response time to 1.6 seconds (which for a single t1.micro is expected, but not 6). So the question is, am i simply not doing something right or is ELB effectively worthless? Anyone have some wisdom on this?   • Strange network issue (ZIP file fails CRC test over VPN)

    We have a server in the office running Windows Server 2003 Our office is connected to our datacenter via hardware VPN (Linksys RV082 router in the office to CISCO router in the datacenter). There is a job that runs on the server in the office that does following: ZIP certain files from the server using 7Zip, copy ZIP file to a network share in the office and verify ZIP integrity, copy ZIP file to a network share in the data center and verify ZIP integrity. Problem is - verifying ZIP integrity for the file in the data center always fails. However, if I run 7Zip on the server in data center that exposes that share ZIP file verifies just fine, so it is not actually corrupted during copy operation. Additionally, I tried running ZIP on other computers in the office to verify ZIP file on datacenter file share and it verifies OK. I tried plugging server to the same network port where my workstation is connected using different cable (my workstation doesn't exhibit this problem) and ZIP verification still fails. So the problem is local to that specific server. On network adapter properties for the server in question there is no "Advanced" tab where one can usually configure a lot of network settings. Network card driver is up to date (Windows Update doesn't find anything newer and Lenovo website doesn't have any drivers for Windows 2003 for this computer model). Is there any other way to configure network setting via command line? What settings could be relevant to this problem?
