• How do I write a Guice Provider that doesn't explicitly create objects?

  Say I have a ClassWithManyDependencies. I want to write a Guice Provider for this class, in order to create a fresh instance of the class several times in my program (another class will depend on this Provider and use it at several points to create new instances). One way to achieve this is by having the Provider depend on all the dependencies of ClassWithManyDependencies. This is quite ugly. Is there a better way to achieve this? Note - I certainly don't want the Provider to depend on the injector. Another option I considered is having ClassWithManyDependencies and ClassWithManyDependenciesProvider extend the same base class, but it's butt ugly.

• Python to C# Conversion of RGBA values not working

  I'm currently converting some python code to C#, and I'm having an issue with the RGBA C# libraries # Original Python Code: d = math.sqrt( (x - size/2.0)**2 + (y - size/2.0)**2 ) rgbVal = int(200*d/md + 50) rgba = (0,0,0, 255 - rgbVal) img.putpixel((x,y), rgba) // My C# Code double d = Math.Sqrt(Math.Pow((x - DotSize / 2.0), 2) + Math.Pow((y - DotSize / 2.0), 2)); int rgbVal = (int) (200 * d / md + 50); Color color = Color.FromArgb(255 - rgbVal, 0, 0, 0); // ** ERROR ** img.SetPixel(x,y, color); At both instances of the code d is equal to 106 and md is equal to 53. However the resulting rgbVal value is 450. This would obviously mean that 255 - 450 is -195, which causes an error to be thrown as each individual value must be between 0 and 255. Anyone have any idea how I can fix this. Please note that the data is the same when running both the python and C# versions.

• Sharepoint always down on the weekend?

  For some reason, our sharepoint site always goes down on Saturday. It's the stangest thing and I can't figure out why. I'm a total noob at sharepoint and have been thrown into being the go to guy for sharepoint with my current employer. I've tried bouncing IIS on Fridays to see if there is anything I can do before hand. Is there anything that might be scheduled that I may not know about that would cause sharepoint to go down? Remember I'm a total noob as sharepoint. Thanks to all that reply. Edit: Also this our front-end and database instances are on virtual servers.

• Within SSIS - Is it possible to deploy one package multiple times in the same instance and set diffe

  In my environment my Dev and QA Database Instances are on the same server. I would like to deploy the same package (or different versions of the package) into SSIS and set the filter to select different rows in the Config table. Is this possible? This is SQL 2005. For the sake of this question lets say I have one variable, which is a directory path. I would like to have these variables in the table twice (with different Filters applied (Dev and QA) as below (simplified) . . . Filter / Variable Value / Variable Name Dev / c:\data\dev / FilePath QA / c:\data\qa / FilePath Do I need to apply a change within the settings of the package in SSIS or is it changed on the job step within Agent? Any help would be appreciated.

• Jenkins to not allow the same job to run concurrently on the same node?

  I have 4 nodes and 2 jobs. Any node can run 2 jobs concurrently and any job can be executed concurrently. I want to be able to restrict running the same job concurrently on the same machine. For example: Jobs: J1 and J2 nodes: N1,N2,N3 and N4 I can run J1 and J2 on the same node at the same time. I can run J1 on N1 and N3 at the same time. BUT I do not want to run J1 and another build of J1 on the same node at the same time. I have tried "Locks and Latches", "Jenkins Exclusive Execution", "Exclusion Plugin" plugins, and these will work well when trying to coordinate different jobs. But my case is trying to manage different build-instances of the same job.

• Loading multiple embedded flash apps onto an HTML page- problem with ordering

  We need to load an embedded version of a site written in Flash, and not originally designed to load multiple instances of itself, on a HTML page. The specific issue is how to get them to load in order when embedded, given that they are all being opened by the same instance of the flash player. It's a complicated mapping application, and at the moment, the maps and data get intermixed as the session variables are overwritten by another instance starting to load before the previous one has finished. We need a way to have them load sequentially, one finishing before another starts to load. The most we can specify in the URL is an &order=1 or similar. We have PHP and SQL on the backend. Edit: The embedded versions are being loaded in an iFrame of a parent site. One php file loads one swf, as many times as the parent site desires.

  I have a program that works when, a file is opened with it using the right click menu in explorer. But if I select multiple files and then right click and open with my program then it opens multiple instances of my program, instead of just passing the multiple files as arguments to a single instance. The program is written in vb.net but is not a windows form, it is just a module, so I can to tick the Single instance option in the properties in Visual Studio. So how do I open multiple files from explorer context menu in a single instance.

  Hi, I'm planning to log my squid instances to a mongodb, but the actual problem is that we have a huge traffic to be logged, every access authenticated with user/pass. Eventually we have to make some reports based on logs. I was thinking to insert the logs distributed by months and by users, so my collection will look like this: {month: 'april', users: [{user: 'loop0', logs: [{timestamp: 12345678.9, url: 'http://stackoverflow.com/question/ask', ... }]}] So if I want to generate my reports based on the month of april I just have to get the right month instead of looking in zillions of lines to fetch the lines that timestamp match between April, 1 and April, 30. Of course this type of insert will be slower than just insert the log line directly. So my question is: is there a best way to do this? Nowadays we have around 12 million lines of log by day.

  In my application I have a Customer class and an Address class. The Customer class has three instances of the Address class: customerAddress, deliveryAddress, invoiceAddress. Whats the best way to reflect this structure in a database? The straightforward way would be a customer table and a separate address table. A more denormalized way would be just a customer table with columns for every address (Example for "street": customer_street, delivery_street, invoice_street) What are your experiences with that? Are there any advantages and disadvantages of these approaches?

• OneToMany association updates instead of insert

  I have an entity with one-to-many association to child entity. The child entity has 2 columns as PK and one of the column is FK to the parent table. mapping looks like this: @OneToMany(cascade = {CascadeType.ALL}, fetch = FetchType.EAGER ) @JoinColumn(name="USER_RESULT_SEQUENCES.USER_RESULT_ID", referencedColumnName="USER_RESULT_ID", unique=true, insertable=true, updatable=false) private List<UserResultSequence> sequences; I create an instance of parent and add children instances to list and then try to save it to DB. If child table is empty it inserts all children and it works perfectly. if the child table is not empty it updates existing rows! I don't know why it updates instead of inserts, any ideas why this might happen?? Thank you!

• Unrecognized libraries and functions

  I am working in Eclipse 3.7.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 with C++. I have read about a few instances where libraries were not being recognized and the majority said to update the Paths and Symbols but that hasn't fixed my issue. I have 2 projects open in my workspace, one of which is already a completed project that has implemented functions and libraries with no errors from Eclipse. However, when I try to implement some of the same functions or include the same libraries in the 2nd project Eclipse can't resolve them. For example, #include <string> #include <stdio.h> strstr(p, "<Project>"); The include statement will be accepted and stdio.h will be found but the strstr function is not resolved even though it works fine in the other project. Any ideas as to why this might be happening? Thanks.

• nothrow or exception ?

  I am a student and I have small knowledge on C++, which I try to expand. This is more of a philosophical question.. I am not trying to implement something. Since #include <new> //... T * t = new (std::nothrow) T(); if(t) { //... } //... Will hide the Exception, and since dealing with Exceptions is heavier compared to a simple if(t), why isn't the normal new T() not considered less good practice, considering we will have to use try-catch() to check if a simple allocation succeeded (and if we don't, just watch the program die)?? What are the benefits (if any) of the normal new allocation compared to using a nothrow new? Exception's overhead in that case is insignificant ? Also, Assume that an allocation fails (eg. no memory exists in the system). Is there anything the program can do in that situation, or just fail gracefully. There is no way to find free memory on the heap, when all is reserved, is there? Incase an allocation fails, and an std::bad_alloc is thrown, how can we assume that since there is not enough memory to allocate an object (Eg. a new int), there will be enough memory to store an exception ?? • flex accessing children of a list component

  when I try to loop through the children of a List component that has buttons in it, I can't seem to access those children.   I have declared the following type KEY = (IPv4, Integer) type TPSQ = TVar (PSQ.PSQ KEY POSIXTime) type TMap = TVar (Map.Map KEY [String]) data Qcfg = Qcfg { qthresh :: Int, tdelay :: Rational, cwpsq :: TPSQ, cwmap :: TMap, cw chan :: TChan String } deriving (Show) and would like this to be serializable in a sense that Qcfg can either be written to disk or be sent over the network. When I compile this I get the error No instances for (Show TMap, Show TPSQ, Show (TChan String)) arising from the 'deriving' clause of a data type declaration Possible fix: add instance declarations for (Show TMap, Show TPSQ, Show (TChan String)) or use a standalone 'deriving instance' declaration, so you can specify the instance context yourself When deriving the instance for (Show Qcfg) I am now not quite sure whether there is a chance at all to serialize my TChan although all individual nodes in it are members of the show class. For TMap and TPSQ I wonder whether there are ways to show the values in the TVar directly (because it does not get changed, so there should no need to lock it) without having to declare an instance that does a readTVar ?

  Recently I attended couple of interviews. Out of all kernel questions which were asked, thr is one specific question which I couldnt find convincing answer of. How will you use different synchronization techniques while sharing data between user space process and interrupt context function? My convincing answer was: In interrupt context code: 1. do *spin_lock_irqsave* 2. access data buffer which is shared between user space app and kernel 3. do *spin_lock_irqrestore* Then this was not convincing answer. • Should I use polymorphic association, just a has_one, or attribute in this case?

  I have three Models: Contact_Email, Contact_Letter, and Contact_Call. These represent the unique pairing of a Contact with a template for each of the three. For all of these, I want to record at least a status and date for the status. For example, "declined" on 5/10/10 or "responded" on 5/10/10 or something like that. I may in the future want to extend that. I later do want to be able to see all the instances that have the same status, such as "responded" or "meeting requested." What is the best way to do this? To make the three Contacts statusable and create a polymorphic association on a model called Status. Or just each Object of Contact_Email has_one Status?

• Network license control for a Java application

  I have been tasked with providing some form of network license control for a Java application. The app would be stored on a network drive and run from a client machine. The basic idea is that it will be able to work out how many times it is being run concurrently and prevent the N+1th user from running the software where N is the number of concurrent licenses the customer has purchased. Is this possible somehow with a Java application? I implemented a "solution" which relied on multi-cast UDP communication between the running instances of the application but this didn't work because on most networks this kind of communication is blocked by security measures. Is there a better way? I don't even mind if it requires JNI/JNA. N.B. The solution does not have to be that sophisticated or highly secure.

  Hello, This is a newbe question but I have alwasy doubts with pointers in C++. This is the situation. I have a class A which as a collection (a vector actually) of pointers of class B. This same class A has another collection of pointers to class C. Finally the objects of class B have also a collection to pointers to class C which point to the same instances the class A points to. My question is, if I delete a member of class-C-type pointer in class B, what happens to the pointer in class A that points to the deleted instance of class C? How this situation has to be treated? • Cocoa (Touch) for Swing Developers #1: Where Are the Layouts?

  My iPhone SDK and Objective-C learning is moving ahead quickly, thanks to several great books and online help (including this one). But I do have some basic questions due to what I already know that will be answered eventually, but I'd rather get a heads-up now if possible :) Are there equivalents for LayoutManagers in Cocoa Touch? Are they used, or is absolute positioning used instead? I have seen some of the layout stuff in IB, but I'm not sure what to look at in code. Aside from using the IB, are UIControls added directly to UIView instances using the addSubview (like add in Swing)? These are just two concrete questions that I've thought of just now, but I would love to see any translation of Swing concepts to Cocoa Touch.

  In ruby, you can do this: d = [1, 2, 3] a, b, c = d a, b, and c, will receive the values 1, 2, and 3, respectively. d, in this case in an Array and ruby knows to assign it's contents to a, b, and c. But, if d were a Fixnum, for example, only a would be assigned to the value of d while b and c would be assigned nil. What properties of d allow it to be used for multiple assignment? In my exploring so far, I've only been able to make instances of subclasses of Array behave in this way.

• Optimal strategy to make a C++ hash table, thread safe

  (I am interested in design of implementation NOT a readymade construct that will do it all.) Suppose we have a class HashTable (not hash-map implemented as a tree but hash-table) and say there are eight threads. Suppose read to write ratio is about 100:1 or even better 1000:1. Case A) Only one thread is a writer and others including writer can read from HashTable(they may simply iterate over entire hash table) Case B) All threads are identical and all could read/write. Can someone suggest best strategy to make the class thread safe with following consideration 1. Top priority to least lock contention 2. Second priority to least number of locks My understanding so far is thus : One BIG reader-writer lock(semaphore). Specialize the semaphore so that there could be eight instances writer-resource for case B, where each each writer resource locks one row(or range for that matter). (so i guess 1+8 mutexes) Please let me know if I am thinking on the correct line, and how could we improve on this solution.

• Efficient implementation of exclusive execution

  I have an ObjectManager class that is used to process payments. It is wrapped over the Order entities, so new instance has to be created when processing is required. I need to prevent the situation when several ObjectManager instances are dealing with the same order simultaneously (it happend once because of some errors on the remote payment processing center, somehow they called our callback urls twice). I'd love to get an advice how to implement it more efficiently.
