  • How long (max characters) can a datastore entity key_name be? Is it bad to haver very long key_names

    - by indiehacker
What is the maximum number of characters that can be used to define the key_name of a datastore entity? Is it bad to have very long key_names? For example: Lets say we use key_names of a 170 characters, which is the length of a Twitter message 140 plus 10 numeric characters for latitude and 10 for longtitude and 10 for a timestamp. (Reasoning of such a key_name: So by using such a key_name we can easily and quickly be sure of no duplicate postings, since the same message should not come from the same place and time more than once.)

  • Django model field value preprocessing before returning

    - by Satoru.Logic
Hi, all. I have a Note model class like this: class Note(models.Model): author = models.ForeignKey(User, related_name='notes') content = NoteContentField(max_length=256) NoteContentField is a custom sub-class of CharField that override the to_python method in purpose of doing some twitter-text-conversion processing. class NoteContentField(models.CharField): __metaclass__ = models.SubfieldBase def to_python(self, value): value = super(NoteContentField, self).to_python(value) from ..utils import linkify return mark_safe(linkify(value)) However, this doesn't work. When I save a Note object like this: note = Note(author=request.use, content=form.cleaned_data['content']) The conversed value is saved into the database, which is not what I wanna see. Would you please tell me what's wrong with this? Thanks in advance.

  • Accessing protected REST endpoint with JQuery

    - by Andy
I have a site where members login to their account (FormsAuth). I would like to set up a RESTful service that I can access using jQuery. I would like to protect these services using the same FormsAuth. How would a third-party site be able to access these services? They would need to pass in the Principal/Identity to the service, right? I've only seen examples of Basic Authentication (which Twitter uses and jQuery supports). I'm very new to WCT/REST, so not sure how this should be done.

  • mvc components in codeigniter?

    - by ajsie
in yii i could have mvc components (acts like an own application). could i have this too in codeigniter? eg. in SYSTEM/APPLICATION have a folder called COMPONENTS and in there i put stand-alone applications that would be a part of the application. components like ADDRESS BOOK, MAIL, TWITTER and so on. every component folder has folders like: models, views, controllers, config etc. so a component model extends the application model which in turn extends system's (code igniter) model. the same goes for view and controller. i've already got a lot of these components which i want to use in codeigniter. is it good idea to place them as i said in SYSTEM/APPLICATION/COMPONENTS or is there best practice for this?

  • Using different languages in one project

    - by Tarbal
I recently heard about the use of several different languages in a (big) project, I also read about famous services such as Twitter using Rails as frontend, mixed with some other languages, and Scala I think it was as backend. Is this common practice? Who does that? I'm sure there are disadvantages to this. I think that you will have problems with the different interpreters/compilers and seamlessly connecting the different languages. Is this true? Why is this actually done? For performance?

  • razor intellisense not working on VS2010 for microsoft.web.helpers

    - by pomarc
I have VS2010 Premium,.NET4.0, MVC3 Tools Update. I've nugetted microsoft-web-helpers successfully. I cannot get @razor intellisense to recognize the microsoft.web.helpers classes. They do work correctely at runtime, i.e. @Twitter.profile shows a profile, but at design time the statent is seen as an error and no members are shown after "." I've tried to add <add assembly="System.Web.Helpers, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35" /> to the <assemblies> element in web.config, but it didn't help. • How do you get your self focused with so many distractions around? (which you can't or don't want to

    - by Teja Kantamneni
This question is definitely for a programmer and is centric towards a programmer. But if somebody feels it should not belong here I would not mind deleting it. I don't think this need to go as a WIKI, but if feel like it is a WIKI, I can do that too. The Question is: As a programmer you have to keep yourself up to date with the latest technologies and for that every programmer will generally follow some technology blogs and some social networking sites like (twitter, FB, SO, DZONE etc), how to keep your self focused on the things and still want to follow the technology trends? No Subjective or argumentative answers, Just want to know what practices other fellow programmers do for this...

  • Techniques to avoid DeadlineExceededException in GAE/J?

    - by Tahir Akram
I am developing an Twitter4J web application in Google App Engine/Java. I need to show two lists. One is Twitter friends and other is followers. With photo and screen name. It is working fine for people who have 20-30 followers and friends. But it gave me DeadlineExceededException when I try a user who has 150+ followers and friends. GAE throws this exception if web request take time more than 30 seconds. So what techniques I can adopt to avoid this exception. Should I generate two AJAX calls for each of my list. After page loads. So that every call will have its own 30 secs limit? Or what else you think? I am gone make it. Please help.

  • Blackberry apps: Native or webapps?

    - by jpartogi
Dear all, I have read the Blackberry documentation and it is possible to push a notification from a webapp. I am planning to create a Blackberry application that compliments to our webapps. But I am still left in the middle whether to develop a webapp or native Blackberry app. I have also look at how a webapp runs on Blackberry browser and it looks smooth. From your experience does the native app offer something that the webapp doesn't? Bonus question, is Facebook and Twitter app on Blackberry a native app or a webapp? If it is a webapp, is it possible to make a launcher for the application on Blackberry? Thanks for your help.

  • How to implement Android Pull-to-Refresh

    - by yuku
In Android applications such as Twitter (official app), when you encounter a ListView, you can pull it down (and it will bounce back when released) to refresh the content. I wonder what is the best way, in your opinion, to implement that? Some possibilities I could think of: An item on top of the ListView - however I don't think scrolling back to item position 1 (0-based) with animation on the ListView is an easy task. Another view outside the ListView - but I need to take care of moving the ListView position down when it is pulled, and I'm not sure if we can detect if the drag-touches to the ListView still really scroll the items on the ListView. Any recommendations?

  • jQuery templates - Load another template within a template (composite)

    - by Saxman
    I'm following this post by Dave Ward (http://encosia.com/2010/12/02/jquery-templates-composite-rendering-and-remote-loading/) to load a composite templates for a Blog, where I have a total of 3 small templates (all in one file) for a blog post. In the template file, I have these 3 templates: blogTemplate, where I render the "postTemplate" Inside the "postTemplate", I would like to render another template that displays comments, I called this "commentsTemplate" the "commentsTemplate" Here's the structure of my json data: blog Title Content PostedDate Comments (a collection of comments) CommentContents CommentedBy CommentedDate For now, I was able to render the Post content using the code below: Javascript $(document).ready(function () { $.get('/GetPost', function (data) { $.get('/Content/Templates/_postWithComments.tmpl.htm', function (templates) { $('body').append(templates); $('#blogTemplate').tmpl(data).appendTo('#blogPost'); }); }); }); Templates <!--Blog Container Templates--> <script id="blogTemplate" type="x-jquery-tmpl"> <div class="latestPost"> {{tmpl() '#postTemplate'}} </div> </script> <!--Post Item Container--> <script id="postTemplate" type="x-jquery-tmpl"> <h2> ${Title}</h2> <div class="entryHead"> Posted in <a class="category" rel="#">Design</a> on ${PostedDateString} <a class="comments" rel="#">${NumberOfComments} Comments</a></div> ${Content} <div class="tags"> {{if Tags.length}} <strong>Tags:</strong> {{each(i, tag) Tags}} <a class="tag" href="/blog/tags/{{= tag.Name}}"> {{= tag.Name}}</a> {{/each}} <a class="share" rel="#"><strong>TELL A FRIEND</strong></a> <a class="share twitter" rel="#">Twitter</a> <a class="share facebook" rel="#">Facebook</a> {{/if}} </div> <!-- close .tags --> <!-- end Entry 01 --> {{if Comments.length}} {{each(i, comment) Comments}} {{tmpl() '#commentTemplate'}} {{/each}} {{/if}} <div class="lineHor"> </div> </script> <!--Comment Items Container--> <script id="commentTemplate" type="x-jquery-tmpl"> <h4> Comments</h4> &nbsp; <!-- COMMENT --> <div id="authorComment1"> <div id="gravatar1" class="grid_2"> <!--<img src="images/gravatar.png" alt="" />--> </div> <!-- close #gravatar --> <div id="commentText1"> <span class="replyHead">by<a class="author" rel="#">${= comment.CommentedBy}</a>on today</span> <p> {{= comment.CommentContents}}</p> </div> <!-- close #commentText --> <div id="quote1"> <a class="quote" rel="#"><strong>Quote this Comment</strong></a> </div> <!-- close #quote --> </div> <!-- close #authorComment --> <!-- END COMMENT --> </script> Where I'm having problem is at the {{each(i, comment) Comments}} {{tmpl() '#commentTemplate'}} {{/each}} Update - Example Json data when GetPost method is called { Id: 1, Title: "Test Blog", Content: "This is a test post asdf asdf asdf asdf asdf", PostedDateString: "2010-12-20", - Comments: [ - { Id: 1, PostId: 1, CommentContents: "Test comments # 1, asdf asdf asdf", PostedBy: "User 1", CommentedDate: "2010-12-20" }, - { Id: 2, PostId: 1, CommentContents: "Test comments # 2, ghjk gjjk gjkk", PostedBy: "User 2", CommentedDate: "2010-12-21" } ] } I've tried passing in {{tmpl(comment) ..., {{tmpl(Comments) ..., or leave {{tmpl() ... but none seems to work. I don't know how to iterate over the Comments collection and pass that object into the commentsTemplate. Any suggestions? Thank you very much.

  • Why release the NSURLConnection instance in this statement?

    - by aquaibm
I read this in a book. -(IBAction) updateTweets { tweetsView.text = @""; [tweetsData release]; tweetsData = [[NSMutableData alloc] init]; NSURL *url = [NSURL URLWithString:@"http://twitter.com/statuses/public_timeline.xml" ]; NSURLRequest *request = [[NSURLRequest alloc] initWithURL: url]; NSURLConnection *connection = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest:request delegate:self]; [connection release]; [request release]; [activityIndicator startAnimating]; } In this statement,is that correct to release the "connection" instance at that time? After releasing it which means this NSURLConnection instance will be destroyed since it's reference count is 0 ,how are we going to make this connection operation work? THANKS.

  • Is there a production ready web application framework in Python?

    - by peperg
I heard lots of good opinions about Python language. They say it's mature, expressive etc... Are there any production-ready web application frameworks in Python. By "production ready" I mean : supports objective-relational mapping with caching and declarative desciption (like JPA, Hibernate etc..) controls oriented user interface support - no HTML templates but something like JSF (RichFaces, Icefaces) or GWT, Vaadin, ZK component decomposition and dependency injection (like EJB or Spring) unit and integration testing good IDE support clustering, modularity etc (like Terracota, OSGi etc..) there are successful applications written in it by companies like IBM, Oracle etc (I mean real business applications not Twitter) could have commercial support Is it possible at all in Python world ? Or only choices are : use Python and write everything from the bottom (too expensice) stick to JEE buy .NET stack

  • How to use Zend Cache with SimpleXML objects?

    - by Jeremy Hicks
I'm trying to cache the user timeline of a Twitter feed using Zend_Service_Twitter which returns its results as a SimpleXML object. Unfortunately the regular serialize functions (which Zend Cache uses) don't play nice with SimpleXMl objects. I found this http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg18133.html. So it looks like I'll need to create some kind of custom frontend for Zend Cache to be able to change the serialize function used. Anybody ever done this already or can point me where to look to start?

  • Regex for url formatting (www.domain.tld to anchors)

    - by Kristaps
Hi. I'm currently developing a little browser-based Twitter widget. Currently, I'm stuck with getting the URLs to work. I'm kinda newbie, when it comes to regex (I know, how to get parts of a string, but this one – tough one). So, I need a regex that would search/replace www.domain.tld -> <a href="http://www.domain.tld">http://www.domain.tld</a> With/without http://, preferably. Any advice is welcome. Thanks.

  • Link all'interno di un campo testo

    - by aleds
Grazie Alessandro DS http://alex-on-rails.blogspot.com/

  • PHP replace string help...

    - by MILESMIBALERR
i am designing a site with a comment system and i would like a twitter like reply system. The if the user puts @a_registered_username i would like it to become a link to the user's profile. i think preg_replace is the function needed for this. $ALL_USERS_ROW *['USERNAME'] is the database query array for all the users and ['USERNAME'] is the username row. $content is the comment containing the @username i think this should not be very hard to solve for someone who is good at php. Does anybody have any idea how to do it?

I just validated my actual XHTML Strict 1.0 doc with the w3c validator service.. and it says that, <ul id="socialnetwork"> <li><a href="http://www.twitter.com" target="_blank"></a></li> <li><a href="http://www.flickr.com" target="_blank"></a></li> <li><a href="http://www.xing.com" target="_blank"></a></li> <li><a href="http://www.rss.com" target="_blank"></a></li> </ul> the target="_blank" is not valid.. but I need the target blank so a new tab will open in the browser, so that the user does not leave the main page. What can I do? Why is this not valid?

  • iphone's nsxmlparser parsing RSS causes encoding problems

    - by Tankista
Hi, Im working on simle RSS reader. This reader loads data from internet via this code: NSXMLParser *rss = [[NSXMLParser alloc] initWithURL:[NSURL URLWithString:@"http://twitter.com/statuses/user_timeline/50405236.rss"]]; My problem is with encoding. RSS 2.0 file is supposed to be UTF8 encoded according to encoding attribute in XML file. <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> So when I download URLs content I get text truncated after first occurance of char with diacritics, example: l š c t ž ý á í é, etc. I tried to solve the problem by downloading URL as UTF8 string, I used this code: NSString *rssXmlString = [NSString stringWithContentsOfURL: [NSURL URLWithString: @"http://www.macblog.sk/rss.xml"] encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding error: nil]; NSData *rssXmlData = [rssXmlString dataUsingEncoding: NSUTF8StringEncoding]; Did not help. Thanx for your responses.

  • How to limit the wordpress tagcloud by date?

    - by Nordin
Hello, I've been searching for quite a while now to find a way to limit wordpress tags by date and order them by the amount of times they appeared in the selected timeframe. But I've been rather unsuccesful. What I'm trying to achieve is something like the trending topics on Twitter. But in this case, 'trending tags'. By default the wordpress tagcloud displays the most popular tags of all time. Which makes no sense in my case, since I want to track current trends. Ideally it would be something like: Most popular tags of today Obama (18 mentions) New York (15 mentions) Iron Man (11 mentions) Robin Hood (7 mentions) And then multiplied for 'most popular this week' and 'most popular this month'. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this?

  • Dealing with uncertainty in ORM - Entity Framework CodeOnly

    - by Simon Fox
This is a bit of a strange one but I've just seen something on twitter which kind of baffled me and I'm interested to know more. Rob Conery tweeted the following a couple of hours ago: Class name of the day: "Maybe<T>". Method of the day: "ToMaybe<T>()". He then went on to offer a Tekpub coupon to anyone who could guess where it came from. He linked to a further tweet which had a clue and from that I worked out that it was Entity Framework Code-Only but while trying to determine the usage someone else answered to which Rob replied ...EF CodeOnly - dealing with uncertainty.... So my question boils down to what exactly is he referring to with uncertainty and how does this fit in to Entity Framework Code-Only?
