• Today is my first day in the land of backbone.js

  I am semi-excited to say that today is my first day into the land of backbone.js.  This will of course take me into many other new javascript-y areas.  As I have primarily been focused on building backend systems for the past many years…with no focus on client side bits…this will be all new ground for me.  Very exciting! I am sure that this endeavor will lead to writing about many new findings along the way.  Expect the subject of near future postings to not be related to MVC or server side code. • Why will Google Analytics not allow our URL?

  In Google Analytics we're trying to add a property for each website of a WordPress multisite network. It works well for all of the sub-site but one. In the Default URL field we used the following: www.mywebsite.no/ - works www.mywebsite.no/nurse - works, as does a few other sub-sites www.mywebsite.no/doctor - doesn't work In the last case we get the following error: Value is not a valid domain. (e.g. example.com, www.example.com) We can't change the name of the sub-site but GA just won't accept the URL. Why is this and what can we do to solve this?

• Application development : method to manage backgound process

  I am developing an application with different behavior depending on the arguments : - "-config" starts a Gtk window to change options, start and close the daemon. - "-daemon" starts a background process that does something every X minutes. I already know how to use fork/system/exec etc... But I would like to know the main logic of such application to : - restart or refresh the daemon when configuration change. - keep only one instance of the daemon. I have red that killing the daemon to restart it is not a clean way to do. How other applications do ? (ubuntuone, weather forecast, rss feed working with notification area) Thanks for your help. PS : I don't want to create a system-wide daemon, just a user application with a background process.

• How to include high resolution version of thumbnail

  I'm running a tube site that has a thumbnail for each post/video (running via Wordpress, 500k posts). When I first created the thumbnails they were a fairly large size, around 640px in width each and because of that I was seeing a lot of traffic from Google Images. After streamlining the site and resizing all of the thumbnails down to 170px rather than scaling them down I'm worried that Google isn't going to rank the images as high as they would be at a larger resolution, so is there a way to include the higher res versions and serve them to be indexed instead of the smaller ones?

  I never know where it's acceptable to post something like this, so please forgive if it's in the wrong place. I'm very interested in going further in to web development; I know a bit of javascript, a bit of php, and so forth, but I'm now seeing these services that will go from psd to wordpress for 200 bucks and I'm wondering how the hell is anyone able to compete with this? So I'm wondering if those more knowledgeable than me could tell me what areas are the least likely to be able to be outsourced, for 5 bucks to some kid in Uzbekistan( no offense to that kid).. do you think it's on the database management side, or maybe app development? ideas appreciated.

• How to handle animations?

  I am coding a simple 2D engine to be used with HTML5. I already have classes such as Picture, Scene, Camera and Renderer, but now I need to work on Animations. Picture is basocally a wrapper for a normal image object, with it's own draw method, but this is unrelated, I'm interested in how animation in 2D games is usually done. What I planned to do, is to have the Animation class as well act like a wrapper for a few image objects, and then have methods such as getCurrentImage, next and animate (which would use intervals to quickly change the current image). I meant to feed the animation a couple of PNG's at inicialisation. Is quickly swapping PNG images acceptable for 2D animation? Are there some standard ways of doing this, or are there flaws in my ways?

  This year the Summit registration opens at 6PM on Sunday at the Seattle convention center.  Last year we had a dozen people hanging out, watching the twitter feed on the big monitor and catching up.  All we really needed was a bar and we’d have our own little party going. So this year I’m adding a bar.  I’ve arranged for a cash bar and some stand up tables.  I’m buying the first round for the first 40 or so people that come by.  Come by, register and say Hi.  I’d especially like to encourage first-time attendees to stop by.  This is a low key way to meet some people that will be at the conference.

• How to get notfications of ppa updates?

  How can I get notified of updates to a certain PPA? For example when I am interested in new package versions of a certain package in a certain PPA? If a user has the package in question installed and is using the default desktop, she probably get notified via an icon in the traybar or something like that. But I am searching for a method which works even when the package is not installed (and without gnome). It should be reliable and prompt. Does launchpad provides some RSS/Atom-Feed features for PPAs? Or email notifications? (As a sidenote: I am surprised that even with my own PPA I only get an upload notification via mail - but no notification when the binary package is finished.)

  Lately, I've been working a lot in PHP and specifically within the WordPress framework. I'm noticing a lot of code in the form of: if ( 1 == $options['postlink'] ) Where I would have expected to see: if ( $options['postlink'] == 1 ) Is this a convention found in certain languages / frameworks? Is there any reason the former approach is preferable to the latter (from a processing perspective, or a parsing perspective or even a human perspective?) Or is it merely a matter of taste? I have always thought it better when performing a test, that the variable item being tested against some constant is on the left. It seems to map better to the way we would ask the question in natural language: "if the cake is chocolate" rather than "if chocolate is the cake".

• Starting small custom development company, type of niches to target?

  This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps.   I'm so sorry because this question doesn't related to Ubuntu. I asked in Openstack forum but this forum is not very active. So I think if someone have experience with Openstack Nova can help me with my problem. I've read some explanations about nova-network and how to configure it like this one from wiki: http://wiki.openstack.org/UnderstandingFlatNetworking I'm confusing about a detail. If every traffic from the instances must go through nova controller node, then why we still need the public interface for nova-compute node? Is it necessary? What happen when a request from outside to an instance. For example I have a controller node and a nova-compute node. In nova-compute node I run an instance with a Wordpress website. Then someone connect to the public IP of this instance. So the request go directly from router to the nova-compute node or from router to controller node then nova-compute node? Thank you!

• remove ssl from Google search results

  I am the webadmin of a WordPress site that serves up http pages statically. The problem is that some of the pages are shown as https in Google search results. For instance, if the search term "Example Press Kit" is entered the search result site link comes up as: https://example.com/presskit/ We don't have a site ssl certificate, so surfers are being bounced. I have tried everything. Most recently I created a new website in Google WebAdmin for the https version of our home page. Then, I added sitelinks that should have redirected site links intended for https://example.com/* to http://example.com/*. But it doesn't work! Google still shows a dead link to http://example.com/presskit. I didn't think dead links lasted very long on Google results, but there they are, two weeks later. Any ideas?

• Images not indexed by google since moving to cdn

  Last week I moved all the images on coffeeandvanilla.com to a cdn( maxcdn.coffeeandvanilla.com ). The problem I'm having is that although the sitemap—generated by yoast wordpress seo plugin—points images to the correct location, google only indexes[sic] images from the category and page site maps but 0 images from the posts sitemap( see screenshot https://dl.dropbox.com/u/4635252/sitemap.png ) This website has been doing quite well with google image-search before the change, visits from google image search have dropped from ~200/day to 11 yesterday Here is an example entry from the generated posts.xml sitemap http://pastebin.com/vcMRf9VW Can anyone suggest where the problem lies? Why have I lost all my google image juice? Should I just wait some more, how long before really worrying?

• How can I stop a bot attack on my site?

  I have a site (built with wordpress) that is currently under a bot attack (as best I can tell). A file is being requested over and over, and the referrer is (almost every time) turkyoutube.org/player/player.swf. The file being requested is deep within my theme files, and is always followed by "?v=" and a long string (i.e. r.php?v=Wby02FlVyms&title=izlesen.tk_Wby02FlVyms&toke). I've tried setting an .htaccess rule for that referrer, which seems to work, except that now my 404 page is being loaded over and over, which is still using lots of bandwidth. Is there a way to create an .htaccess rule that requires no bandwidth usage on my part? I also tried creating a robots.txt file, but the attack seems to be ignoring that. #This is the relevant part of the .htaccess file: RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} turkyoutube\.org [NC] RewriteRule .* - [F]

• problem with template: negative margins on float

  hi, i'm having a very strange problem with the wordpress template. i'd like to place 2 divs besides each other like this: <div style='float:left;'> left div </div> <div style='float:right'> right div </div> normally this works as it should - both divs should stick directly to each other - but something in the style.css (which uses css reset) causes the right div to overlap the left div with ~ 5pixels. i searched the whole .css for it but couldn't find out :(( it's just a fact that it must be something with the default css. anyone knows what is causing this - some fix? thanks

• Which CMS for photo-blog website?

  I need to add photo-blog to a site that I'm recently working on. It is very simple site so the blog doesn't have to be very sophisticated. What I need is: a CMS that allows me to create simple blog-like news with one (or more) images at the beginning and some description/comment below. Preferably, I would like to create something that works like sites like these two: http://www.photoblog.com/dreamie or http://www.photoblog.pl/mending/ it must be customizable. I want to integrate it's look as much as possible with current page: http://saviorforest.tk preferably, it should provide some mechanizm for uploading and storing images at the server. I thought about wordpress, but it seems to be a little bit too complicated for such simple task. Do you know any simple and easy in use CMS that would work here?
