• Command to surround a character with spaces in vim

  I am trying to use vim properly - to aid me I've mapped my arrow keys to "" so that I am forced to use {hjlk} to move around. This is causing me a problem when I want to just surround a character with spaces, eg: "2+3" is better formatted "2 + 3" Previously I would have put my cursor over the + and typed: i[space][arrow-right][space][Esc] That's 5 presses. To do this without the arrow I seem to need to put the cursor over the + and go: i[space][Esc]lli[space][Esc] That's 8 presses. I can convert the "li" into an "a" which reduces it to 7 presses: i[space][Esc]la[space][Esc] Short of writing this into a macro is there a better way of doing it? Is there some magic vim command which will allow me to do it in less than even 5 presses - and some way to generalise it so that I can do it to entire words or symbols, eg if I want to convert 3==4 to 3 == 4?

• Static variable for optimization

  I'm wondering if I can use a static variable for optimization: public function Bar() { static $i = moderatelyExpensiveFunctionCall(); if ($i) { return something(); } else { return somethingElse(); } } I know that once $i is initialized, it won't be changed by by that line of code on successive calls to Bar(). I assume this means that moderatelyExpensiveFunctionCall() won't be evaluated every time I call, but I'd like to know for certain. Once PHP sees a static variable that has been initialized, does it skip over that line of code? In other words, is this going to optimize my execution time if I make a lot of calls to Bar(), or am I wasting my time?

• Should I allow my clients to open tickets/access trac?

  I just installed trac for this project I'm working on, since it's turned out to be a bit bigger than I anticipated. I've added a bunch of tickets with my clients requests which come in the form of emails, phone calls, and meetings. I've also added some stuff I know needs to be done/fixed but they haven't specifically requested. Should I grant them access to trac so they can submit the tickets themselves so I don't have to keep translating (words into tickets) for them? They're very non-technical, so I'm not sure how well it would work; they might open tickets and not provide enough detail, or get confused by all the different fields. If your answer is "no", should I at least let them view the tickets, so they can see what I'm working on, what's been done, hasn't been done? So they can stop calling me to say "xxx doesn't work" when it's already a ticket? (Not that this would work, but I could at least respond "see ticket #42")

• C# Regex: only letters followed by an optional .

  Hello, I am looking for a way to get words out of a sentence. I am pretty far with the following expression: \b([a-zA-Z]+?)\b but there are some occurrences that it counts a word when I want it not to. E.g a word followed by more than one period like "text..". So, in my regex I want to have the period to be at the end of a word zero or one time. Inserting .? did not do the trick, and variations on this have not yielded anything fruitful either. Hope someone can help!

  Hi guys I have aproblem with rich text box string color: I have the richtexbox that user type a message in it. I mark up each word that exist in my dictionary. • Resize and center image in html/css?

  Is there a way I can resize, crop, and center an image using html/css only? (img tag or css sprite) For example if I have a 500x500 pixel image, I want to resize that to a 250x250 pixel image I want to make the actual visible image to be 100x100, but still have the scale of a 250x250 sized image. I want the center of the image to be at a location x,y. Is that possible with only html/css, if not, how do you propose I go about it with javascript? Edit - ????: For (2), say my scaled image is now 200x200, and I want my visible image to be 100x100: So I guess what I mean is I want the scale and resolution of the image to be 200x200 but I want the visible image to be 100x100 or in other words the visible image would be at coordinates x,y: 0,0; 0,100; 100,0; 100,100; of the 200x200 image. Sorry, but I'm not good at explaining this.

• Is JPA + EJB to much slow (or heavy) for over Internet transactions?

  Hi, I am developing a stand-alone java client application that connects to a Glassfish v3 application for JPA/EJB facade style transactions. In other words, my client application do not connect directly to the database to CRUD, but it transfers JPA objets using EJB stateless sessions. I have scenarios where this client application will be used in an external network connected with a VPN over Internet with a client connection of 512kbp/DSL, and a simple query takes so much time, I'm seeing the traffic graph and when I merge a entity in the client application I see megabytes of traffic (I couldn't believe how a purchase order entity could weight more than 1 mb). I have LAZY fetch in almost every many-to-many relationship, but I have a lot of many-to-one relationships between entities (but this is the great advantage of JPA!). Could I do something to accelerate the the speed of transactions between JPA/EJB server and the remote java client? Thank you in advance.

  I figured out that in order to turn [some name] into [some_name] I need to use the following expression: s/\(\[[^ ]*\) /\1_/ i.e. create a backreference capture for anything that starts with a literal '[' that contains any number of non space characters, followed by a space, to be replaced with the non space characters followed by an underscore. What I don't know yet though is how to alter this expression so it works for ALL underscores within the braces e.g. [a few words] into [a_few_words]. I sense that I'm close, but am just missing a chunk of knowledge that will unlock the key to making this thing work an infinite number of times within the constraints of the first set of []s contained in a line (of SQL Server DDL in this case). Any suggestions gratefully received....

• Filtering out unique rows in MySQL

  So I've got a large amount of SQL data that looks basically like this: user | src | dst 1 | 1 | 1 1 | 1 | 1 1 | 1 | 2 1 | 1 | 2 2 | 1 | 1 2 | 1 | 3 I want to filter out pairs of (src,dst) that are unique to one user (even if that user has duplicates), leaving behind only those pairs belonging to more than one user: user | src | dst 1 | 1 | 1 1 | 1 | 1 2 | 1 | 1 In other words, pair (1,2) is unique to user 1 and pair (1,3) to user 2, so they're dropped, leaving behind only all instances of pair (1,1). Any ideas? The answers to the question below can find the non-unique pairs, but my SQL-fu doesn't suffice to handle the complication of requiring that they belong to multiple users as well. • rearranging a list of months

  How can I list the numbers 01 to 12 (one for each of the 12 months) in such a way so that the current month always comes last where the oldest one is first. In other words, if the number is grater than the current month, it's from the previous year. e.g. 02 is Feb, 2011 (the current month right now), 03 is March, 2010 and 09 is Sep, 2010 but 01 is Jan, 2011. In this case, I'd like to have [09, 03, 01, 02]. • How do I ensure data consistency in this concurrent situation?

  The problem is this: I have multiple competing threads (100+) that need to access one database table Each thread will pass a String name - where that name exists in the table, the database should return the id for the row, where the name doesn't already exist, the name should be inserted and the id returned. There can only ever be one instance of name in the database - ie. name must be unique How do I ensure that thread one doesn't insert name1 at the same time as thread two also tries to insert name1? In other words, how do I guarantee the uniqueness of name in a concurrent environment? This also needs to be as efficient as possible - this has the potential to be a serious bottleneck. If I specify $sc-setTrack(array('just bought from')); This will correctly pull only tweets that have all 3 keywords - but doesn't maintain the order. 1) I want the keywords to appear in the same order like "I just bought apple from itunes" but the above also returns tweets like "I bought some apples and just removed them from the bag" 2) Is there a way to specify the exact words say "NBA basketball" with nothing in between - in the sense I dont want tweets like this to be returned Watching basketball on NBA tv I just want tweets which contain the exact phrase to be returned like I love watching NBA basketball 3) Also is there a way to specify negative keywords Any tips if this is possible. • Co-opt popular abandonware opensource project?

  Here's the scenario: A popular open source project is used/loved by many but has become stale due to the fact that the last drop came out nearly a year ago. Many bugs/feature requests/fixes have been logged in the interim and everyone is getting by via downloading the trunk and building custom/private builds with the changes incorporated. The copyright is simple -- there is none and the code is in the public domain. The project owner spins the project as community open source and has set up a sourceforge site, but to date (5 years running now) has yet to accept one contributor. In other words the "community" is a community of one. The project owner takes great pride in the project and has obviously contributed a lot of time/effort but for whatever reason has has seemingly abandoned the project and is unresponsive when offers of help are made. So, the question, should the community fork the codebase, set up a new community site, and take matters in their own hands?

• Are there libraries or techniques for collecting and weighing keywords from a block of text?

  I have a field in my database that can contain large blocks of text. I need to make this searchable but don't have the ability to use full text searching. Instead, on update, I want my business layer to process the block of text and extract keywords from it which I can save as searchable metadata. Ideally, these keywords could then be weighed based on the number of times they appear in the block of text. Naturally, words like "the", "and", "of", etc. should be discarded as they just add a lot of noise to the search. Are there tools or libraries in Python that can do this filtering or should I roll my own?

  Cubism was designed, by mbostock's own words, for maximum information density - which means it generally wants to display one datapoint per pixel. While this is useful in many cases, it doesn't help when your data itself is not that dense. • Sending data between forms without using .Show()

  Lets say I have 2 forms. In Form1 I have a timer, which counts (count++) and in Form2 I have a text box (textBox1) which shows how much the timer has counted. Now I want to know how would I show the integer 'count' in 'textBox1' without any user interference (clicking buttons) or in other words, how would I make the data in the text box auto refresh (without using Form2 form = new Form2(); form.Show();). I want 2 separate windows, in one a running timer and in the other a textbox displaying how much the timer has counted and constantly updating (with the help of the timer, I presume).

• jQuery inline text scrolling/rotating/carousel effect

  I trying to create an animation with JQuery that scrolls 1 word in a sentence. For example, I am a nice sententce of text with a MAGIC word in it OTHER HIDDEN WORDS After a second or so, MAGIC would move upwards and OTHER would scroll into view. I've tried playing with a few carousel plugins but I can't seem to get the effect working. Some seem to have so many nested divs that they refuse to display inline, others have issues when one word is longer than another. Does anybody know of a plugin that could make this possible? Is this even possible?

• What algorithm would you use to code a parrot?

  A parrot learns the most commonly uttered words and phrases in its vicinity so it can repeat them at inappropriate moments. So how would you create a software version? Assuming it has access to a microphone and can record sound at will, how would you code it without requiring infinite resources? The best I can imagine is to divide the stream using silences in the sound, and then use some pattern recognition to encode each one as a list of tokens, storing new ones as you meet them. Hashing the token sequences and counting occurrences in a database, you could build up a picture of the most frequently uttered phrases. But given the huge variety in phrases, how do you prevent this just becoming a huge list? And the sheer number of pairs to match would surely generate lot of false positives from the combinatorial nature of matching. Would you use a neural net, since that's how a real parrot manages it? Or is there another, cleverer way of matching large-scale patterns in analogue data?

  hi, I've a parent (Canvas) with many children (LinkButtons) The linkButtons trigger an event to communicate between them: dispatchEvent(new SameBookmarkEvent("SameBookmarkEvent", bookmark.name)); and all linkButtons have a listener this.addEventListener("SameBookmarkEvent", highlightMe); ... private function highlightMe(e:SameBookmarkEvent):void { //do something } Now, the issue is that the event is only listened by the dispatcher child. In other words, only the child triggering the event, is receiving it. I was wondering what's wrong with it, and if I should add a listener to the parent (Canvas)... I basically need the children (LinkButton) communicate between them

• ORM Against a Service-Wrapped Data Source

  We are tasked with migrating an existing set of entities (currently POCOs persisted with NHibernate against an MSSQL database) to now persist to some kind of web service (yet to be built, either RESTful or SOAP-based, and that we control). I like how NHibernate encapsulates the persistence concerns and lets us maintain a logic-rich, persistence-agnostic domain model. Is there any way to make NHibernate talk to a web service at the back end instead of a SQL database directly? In other words, can "service instead of SQL database" be treated as a persistence implementation detail and allow us to continue to use NHibernate? Am I asking the right question? :)

• In PLT scheme, can I export functions after another function has been called?

  I'm trying to create a binding to libpython using scheme's FFI. To do this, I have to get the location of python, create the ffi-lib, and then create functions from it. So for instance I could do this: (module pyscheme scheme (require foreign) (unsafe!) (define (link-python [lib "/usr/lib/libpython2.6.so"]) (ffi-lib lib)) This is all well and good, but I can't think of a way to export functions. For instance, I could do something like this: (define Py_Initialize (get-ffi-obj "Py_Initialize" libpython (_fun -> _void))) ...but then I'd have to store a reference to libpython (created by link-python) globally somehow. Is there any way to export these functions once link-python is called? In other words, I'd like someone using the module to be able to do this: (require pyscheme) (link-python) (Py_Initialize) ...or this: (require pyscheme) (link-python "/weird/location/for/libpython.so") (Py_Initialize) ...but have this give an error: (require pyscheme) (Py_Initialize) How can I do this?
