  • whats the default username and password for an ubuntu live cd?

    - by Rory McCann
What's the username and password for an ubuntu live cd image? I ask cause I've recently copied the contents of an ubuntu based live iso (easypeasy, the ldistro for nwtbooks) onto a harddisk, but the squash fs is corrupt. Most likely cause I copied it live. :) so it's not autologging in. Is there a username/password for this? Update: I tried username ubuntu and a blank password, it didn't work

  • Proftpd: How to set default root to a users home directory without jailing the user?

    - by sacamano
Hi there. I've installed proftpd on my debian box but I'm having having some trouble with the configuration. In my proftpd.conf I've added; DefaultRoot ~ !ftp_special This works fine in that all users except members of ftp-special are unable to navigate outside of their home folder. However, I want users that are members of ftp-special to enter a special home folder when logging on to the ftp server but at the same time I want them to be able to navigate the entire server. Right now, if a user that is a member of ftp-special logs on his entry-point is the root ( / ). Thanks in advance.

  • How can I change the default keyboard layout in Ubuntu 10.10?

    - by startoftext
Ubuntu keeps detecting my keyboard layout as Romanian. It almost always does this on a reboot and some times on waking from sleep. Some times it just randomly changes back to Romanian while the computer is on. I always set it back to "USA" in the keyboard preferences and delete the Romanian layout. What files configure this in Ubuntu? I looked in xorg.conf and did not find any keyboard settings. How can I set this to USA permanently? I have a laptop with a typical US layout built in keyboard and I also have an apple keyboard that is also US layout connected via USB. I have run other distributions on this same setup before and never had this happen.

  • How to make the default virtual host return a 404 header in apache?

    - by user59240
I know that similar questions have been asked, but the available answers are not very clear, so please bear with me. After setting up a few <VirtualHost>s in apache, I'd like to configure the _defualt_ ServerName so that it returns the 404 message. I.e., unless some explicitly available domain is specified in the Host http header, return 404. (Ideally something more direct than pointing to a now-nonexistent directory.) Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • How do I change the default Windows behavior of double-clicking on the top of an app's window?

    - by Mike C.
I recently got a Mac for use at home and really like the feature whereby an app is minimized when you double-click the top of the window. I've gotten so hooked on this behavior that, without thinking about it, I expect it to work on Windows (only to be quickly reminded that it doesn't). Is there a way to change the way Windows handles the double-clicking of the top of an app's window so that the app window will be minimized to the task bar rather than maximized?

  • How do I make Windows pbrush default to a save-as JPG format?

    - by nik
Every time I want to save some image I paste into the Paint application, it chooses a BMP/DIB format (which is the worst for saving things from the clipboard). How can I hack this Windows pbrush application into defaulting to a JPEG format save always? If it matters I am using Windows XP SP3 and Paint 5.1 at the moment. But, I thought the hack would be generic, and I'd like to do this across all my Windows machines.

  • How to change the X-Windows default border width for all window frames in Ubuntu using Gnome 2.28

    - by Heston T. Holtmann
Way back from Windows 3.x days to the latest 64bit Windows 7 (classic/standard theme).. there is a way to make the window edge border wider then 1 pixel... I often use 3 to 5 pixel to make it easy to grab on hi-resolutions displays and hi DPI monitors. There doesn't seem to be an easy or obvious way to do this with the Gnome X-Windowing system? Does any one know how?

  • How do you set the default user in Linux for file creation?

    - by Not a Name
I want to create a directory, for example: /public/all But I want it so that if you create a file in all, the owner is root, but anyone with access to the /public/all folder can delete/edit/etc the file, just not change the permissions. (I will use a self-created "setx" application to change the execute value if needed.) Reason for this, I don't want you to be able to deny other users write/read access to files in /public/all. I heard setuid on directories doesn't work for that.

  • Does Windows 7 have .NET 4 installed by default?

    - by Nasenbaer
I offered software where .NET 4.0 is needed and promised, that Windows 7 already comes with this framework. If not, the user can use the integrated "Windows Update" function to install the framework. My client said to me there is no Framework on Windows 7 Professional installed already. What are details about the situation of Windows 7 and is there an option to install .NET by using the update function of Windows 7?

  • How do I change the default ftp folder in Mac OS X 10.6?

    - by Wild_Eep
I'm running WordPress 2.9.1 from a Mac running 10.6.3. WordPress is installed to the /Library/WebServer/Documents folder. WordPress has a feature called Auto Update. Clicking an auto update button will download and install updated versions of the WordPress software, or third-party plugin tools. It's a convenient way to keep things up to date. WordPress uses FTP to download the files. I've enabled FTP and set up a user account and opened the requisite ports in my firewall for FTP traffic. This doesn't seem to be enough for my self-hosted installation, though. I'm sure this feature was originally designed for someone who has access to a remote shared webserver, and that it's merely a configuration challenge related to the FTP setup. I feel that if I can adjust the initial directory that the FTP service presents to the AutoUpdate feature, everything else will work properly. So, my question is, how do I adjust what folder is presented when a given user connects to a Mac running 10.6.3 via FTP?

  • Can I change the user that is the default choice in UAC?

    - by Will
Windows 7 install. I RANU, so I have to hit the UAC every once in awhile. The problem is that it asks me to enter my password to elevate, but I need to enter the domain\username of the box admin (I'm on a domain) and the password. Instead of UAC popping up with my username entered and the caret in the password box, I'd like it to pop up with the domain\username of a different user, specifically the local admin account, entered. This would save me a click and some typing. Sue me, I'm lazy. Is this possible?

  • Running a WebLogic Portal (WLP) 10.3.4 Domain as a Windows Service

    - by user647124
To start a WLP server as a Windows service it is simplest to make your own script based on the provided standard script located at WL_HOME\server\bin\installSvc.cmd. The standard script works fine for a plain WLS domain, but lacks some classpath and options necessary for WLP.Start by making a copy of the installSvc.cmd script and naming it something specific to your domain.Next, just under SETLOCAL you will find where WL_HOME is defined. Here you will add the definitions you would normally add in a script that later calls installSvc.cmd (as per the standard documentation). set DOMAIN_NAME=gnma_test_domainset USERDOMAIN_HOME=D:\my_test_domainset SERVER_NAME=AdminServerset WLS_USER=weblogicset WLS_PW=gnmaAdmin01set PRODUCTION_MODE=trueset MEM_ARGS=-Xms512m –Xmx512mset MW_HOME=C:\Oracle\Middleware Note: I had heard of people using this approach who had issues with the length of the command line. This may be due to their use of the default domain path. In the example above, I use a shorter path.At this point, edit the DOMAIN_HOME\bin\startWebLogic.cmd and set it to echo both the classpath and the options. Then start the domain and capture the output of those echoes, then shut the domain back down. Now REM out the existing CLASSPATH definition, then use the outputs you captured earlier to set the CLASSPATH and JAVA_OPTIONS like this: REM set CLASSPATH=%WEBLOGIC_CLASSPATH%;%CLASSPATH%; C:\Oracle\Middleware\wlportal_10.3\portal\lib\security\wsrp-security-providers.jarset CLASSPATH=%MW_HOME%\patch_wls1034\profiles\default\sys_manifest_classpath\weblogic_patch.jar;%MW_HOME%\patch_wlp1034\profiles\default\sys_manifest_classpath\weblogic_patch.jar;%MW_HOME%\patch_oepe1111\profiles\default\sys_manifest_classpath\weblogic_patch.jar;%MW_HOME%\patch_ocm1033\profiles\default\sys_manifest_classpath\weblogic_patch.jar;%MW_HOME%\JROCKI~1.1-3\lib\tools.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\weblogic_sp.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\weblogic.jar;%MW_HOME%\modules\features\weblogic.server.modules_10.3.4.0.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\webservices.jar;%MW_HOME%\modules\ORGAPA~1.1/lib/ant-all.jar;%MW_HOME%\modules\NETSFA~1.0_1/lib/ant-contrib.jar;%WL_HOME%\common\derby\lib\derbyclient.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\xqrl.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\xquery.jar;%WL_HOME%\server\lib\binxml.jarset JAVA_OPTIONS= -Xverify:none -ea -da:com.bea... -da:javelin... -da:weblogic... -ea:com.bea.wli... -ea:com.bea.broker... -ea:com.bea.sbconsole... -Dplatform.home=%WL_HOME% -Dwls.home=%WL_HOME%\server -Dweblogic.home=%WL_HOME%\server -Dweblogic.wsee.bind.suppressDeployErrorMessage=true -Dweblogic.wsee.skip.async.response=true -Dweblogic.management.discover=true -Dwlw.iterativeDev=true -Dwlw.testConsole=true -Dwlw.logErrorsToConsole=true -Dweblogic.ext.dirs=%MW_HOME%\patch_wls1034\profiles\default\sysext_manifest_classpath;%MW_HOME%\patch_wlp1034\profiles\default\sysext_manifest_classpath;%MW_HOME%\patch_oepe1111\profiles\default\sysext_manifest_classpath;%MW_HOME%\patch_ocm1033\profiles\default\sysext_manifest_classpath;%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\p13n\lib\system;%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\light-portal\lib\system;%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\portal\lib\system;%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\info-mgmt\lib\system;%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\analytics\lib\system;%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\apps\lib\system;%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\info-mgmt\deprecated\lib\system;%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\content-mgmt\lib\system -Dweblogic.alternateTypesDirectory=%MW_HOME%\wlportal_10.3\portal\lib\securityAnd that's it. Looks really simple, but it took me quite some time to gather all the necessary pieces in order to make it work. Hopefully you find this before you went through half as much research. The example here uses a domain with only the Admin server and no managed servers. For a variety of reasons I only want the Admin server to be run as a service. The standard documentation along with the example above should allow you to expand this to include managed servers should you feel the need.

  • Built-in GZip/Deflate Compression on IIS 7.x

    - by Rick Strahl
IIS 7 improves internal compression functionality dramatically making it much easier than previous versions to take advantage of compression that’s built-in to the Web server. IIS 7 also supports dynamic compression which allows automatic compression of content created in your own applications (ASP.NET or otherwise!). The scheme is based on content-type sniffing and so it works with any kind of Web application framework. While static compression on IIS 7 is super easy to set up and turned on by default for most text content (text/*, which includes HTML and CSS, as well as for JavaScript, Atom, XAML, XML), setting up dynamic compression is a bit more involved, mostly because the various default compression settings are set in multiple places down the IIS –> ASP.NET hierarchy. Let’s take a look at each of the two approaches available: Static Compression Compresses static content from the hard disk. IIS can cache this content by compressing the file once and storing the compressed file on disk and serving the compressed alias whenever static content is requested and it hasn’t changed. The overhead for this is minimal and should be aggressively enabled. Dynamic Compression Works against application generated output from applications like your ASP.NET apps. Unlike static content, dynamic content must be compressed every time a page that requests it regenerates its content. As such dynamic compression has a much bigger impact than static caching. How Compression is configured Compression in IIS 7.x  is configured with two .config file elements in the <system.WebServer> space. The elements can be set anywhere in the IIS/ASP.NET configuration pipeline all the way from ApplicationHost.config down to the local web.config file. The following is from the the default setting in ApplicationHost.config (in the %windir%\System32\inetsrv\config forlder) on IIS 7.5 with a couple of small adjustments (added json output and enabled dynamic compression): <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <configuration> <system.webServer> <httpCompression directory="%SystemDrive%\inetpub\temp\IIS Temporary Compressed Files"> <scheme name="gzip" dll="%Windir%\system32\inetsrv\gzip.dll" staticCompressionLevel="9" /> <dynamicTypes> <add mimeType="text/*" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="message/*" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/x-javascript" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/json" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="*/*" enabled="false" /> </dynamicTypes> <staticTypes> <add mimeType="text/*" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="message/*" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/x-javascript" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/atom+xml" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="application/xaml+xml" enabled="true" /> <add mimeType="*/*" enabled="false" /> </staticTypes> </httpCompression> <urlCompression doStaticCompression="true" doDynamicCompression="true" /> </system.webServer> </configuration> You can find documentation on the httpCompression and urlCompression keys here respectively: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms690689%28v=vs.90%29.aspx http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa347437%28v=vs.90%29.aspx The httpCompression Element – What and How to compress Basically httpCompression configures what types to compress and how to compress them. It specifies the DLL that handles gzip encoding and the types of documents that are to be compressed. Types are set up based on mime-types which looks at returned Content-Type headers in HTTP responses. For example, I added the application/json to mime type to my dynamic compression types above to allow that content to be compressed as well since I have quite a bit of AJAX content that gets sent to the client. The UrlCompression Element – Enables and Disables Compression The urlCompression element is a quick way to turn compression on and off. By default static compression is enabled server wide, and dynamic compression is disabled server wide. This might be a bit confusing because the httpCompression element also has a doDynamicCompression attribute which is set to true by default, but the urlCompression attribute by the same name actually overrides it. The urlCompression element only has three attributes: doStaticCompression, doDynamicCompression and dynamicCompressionBeforeCache. The doCompression attributes are the final determining factor whether compression is enabled, so it’s a good idea to be explcit! The default for doDynamicCompression='false”, but doStaticCompression="true"! Static Compression is enabled by Default, Dynamic Compression is not Because static compression is very efficient in IIS 7 it’s enabled by default server wide and there probably is no reason to ever change that setting. Dynamic compression however, since it’s more resource intensive, is turned off by default. If you want to enable dynamic compression there are a few quirks you have to deal with, namely that enabling it in ApplicationHost.config doesn’t work. Setting: <urlCompression doDynamicCompression="true" /> in applicationhost.config appears to have no effect and I had to move this element into my local web.config to make dynamic compression work. This is actually a smart choice because you’re not likely to want dynamic compression in every application on a server. Rather dynamic compression should be applied selectively where it makes sense. However, nowhere is it documented that the setting in applicationhost.config doesn’t work (or more likely is overridden somewhere and disabled lower in the configuration hierarchy). So: remember to set doDynamicCompression=”true” in web.config!!! How Static Compression works Static compression works against static content loaded from files on disk. Because this content is static and not bound to change frequently – such as .js, .css and static HTML content – it’s fairly easy for IIS to compress and then cache the compressed content. The way this works is that IIS compresses the files into a special folder on the server’s hard disk and then reads the content from this location if already compressed content is requested and the underlying file resource has not changed. The semantics of serving an already compressed file are very efficient – IIS still checks for file changes, but otherwise just serves the already compressed file from the compression folder. The compression folder is located at: %windir%\inetpub\temp\IIS Temporary Compressed Files\ApplicationPool\ If you look into the subfolders you’ll find compressed files: These files are pre-compressed and IIS serves them directly to the client until the underlying files are changed. As I mentioned before – static compression is on by default and there’s very little reason to turn that functionality off as it is efficient and just works out of the box. The one tweak you might want to do is to set the compression level to maximum. Since IIS only compresses content very infrequently it would make sense to apply maximum compression. You can do this with the staticCompressionLevel setting on the scheme element: <scheme name="gzip" dll="%Windir%\system32\inetsrv\gzip.dll" staticCompressionLevel="9" /> Other than that the default settings are probably just fine. Dynamic Compression – not so fast! By default dynamic compression is disabled and that’s actually quite sensible – you should use dynamic compression very carefully and think about what content you want to compress. In most applications it wouldn’t make sense to compress *all* generated content as it would generate a significant amount of overhead. Scott Fortsyth has a great post that details some of the performance numbers and how much impact dynamic compression has. Depending on how busy your server is you can play around with compression and see what impact it has on your server’s performance. There are also a few settings you can tweak to minimize the overhead of dynamic compression. Specifically the httpCompression key has a couple of CPU related keys that can help minimize the impact of Dynamic Compression on a busy server: dynamicCompressionDisableCpuUsage dynamicCompressionEnableCpuUsage By default these are set to 90 and 50 which means that when the CPU hits 90% compression will be disabled until CPU utilization drops back down to 50%. Again this is actually quite sensible as it utilizes CPU power from compression when available and falling off when the threshold has been hit. It’s a good way some of that extra CPU power on your big servers to use when utilization is low. Again these settings are something you likely have to play with. I would probably set the upper limit a little lower than 90% maybe around 70% to make this a feature that kicks in only if there’s lots of power to spare. I’m not really sure how accurate these CPU readings that IIS uses are as Cpu usage on Web Servers can spike drastically even during low loads. Don’t trust settings – do some load testing or monitor your server in a live environment to see what values make sense for your environment. Finally for dynamic compression I tend to add one Mime type for JSON data, since a lot of my applications send large chunks of JSON data over the wire. You can do that with the application/json content type: <add mimeType="application/json" enabled="true" /> What about Deflate Compression? The default compression is GZip. The documentation hints that you can use a different compression scheme and mentions Deflate compression. And sure enough you can change the compression settings to: <scheme name="deflate" dll="%Windir%\system32\inetsrv\gzip.dll" staticCompressionLevel="9" /> to get deflate style compression. The deflate algorithm produces slightly more compact output so I tend to prefer it over GZip but more HTTP clients (other than browsers) support GZip than Deflate so be careful with this option if you build Web APIs. I also had some issues with the above value actually being applied right away. Changing the scheme in applicationhost.config didn’t show up on the site  right away. It required me to do a full IISReset to get that change to show up before I saw the change over to deflate compressed content. Content was slightly more compressed with deflate – not sure if it’s worth the slightly less common compression type, but the option at least is available. IIS 7 finally makes GZip Easy In summary IIS 7 makes GZip easy finally, even if the configuration settings are a bit obtuse and the documentation is seriously lacking. But once you know the basic settings I’ve described here and the fact that you can override all of this in your local web.config it’s pretty straight forward to configure GZip support and tweak it exactly to your needs. Static compression is a total no brainer as it adds very little overhead compared to direct static file serving and provides solid compression. Dynamic Compression is a little more tricky as it does add some overhead to servers, so it probably will require some tweaking to get the right balance of CPU load vs. compression ratios. • struts2 invalid.token returned when form submitted using JQuery

    - by John
Hi, I have inherited some code in which I now have to add CSRF prevention and am trying to use the struts2 tokenSession interceptor to do this. I am adding a token to my form using the struts2 token tag like so: <form id="updateObject" name="updateObject" action="<%=request.getContextPath()%>/prv/updateObject.action" method="POST"> <fieldset class="x-fieldset"> <legend>Update object - Action Required</legend> <div>...</div> <s:token /> <s:hidden name="id" id="objectId" /> more stuff here... <input type="submit" value="Update Object" onclick="javascript:return doUpdateObject('myAction');"/> </fieldset> </form> In my javascript function, I am adding/removing some validation rules (depending upon the action required, and submitting the form: function doUpdateObject(action){ actionPanel.registerAction(action); // this function places the action name in an in-scope variable doUpdateObjectValidationSetup(action); // this function adds/removes jquery validation rules depending upon the action if($("#updateObject").valid()){ $("form#updateObject").submit(); } return false; } I have intercepted the request and a token is being added, however the struts2 tokenSession interceptor is returning invalid.token. The code works as expected without this interceptor. (struts2 xml file not posted - will post the relevant section if required). I have also used the tokenSession interceptor in other pages which use a basic html submit button (i.e. not going via javascript or jquery) and this also works as expected. What is making the token invalid? N.B. The project I have inherited uses a strange mixture of standard html, struts2 tags, ExtJS and JQuery. I will clean this up at some point but at the moment I just need to get the tokenSession interceptor working asap in the code as-is (as I have to apply a similar fix to several hundred pages...). Any help/pointers/tips/etc greatly appreciated! Regards, John

  • Change the default SqlCommand CommandTimeout with configuration rather than recompile?

    - by robertc
I am supporting an ASP.Net 3.5 web application and users are experiencing a timeout error after 30 seconds when trying to run a report. Looking around the web it seems it's easy enough to change the timeout in the code, unfortunately I'm not able to access the code and recompile. • ASP.NET 2.0 app runs on Win 2003 in IIS 5 isolation mode but not in (default) IIS 6 mode

    - by Tex
The app uses DLLImport to call a legacy unmanaged dll. Let's call this dll Unmanaged.dll for the sake of this question. Unmanaged.dll has dependencies on 5 other legacy dll's. All of the legacy dll's are placed in the WebApp/bin/ directory of my ASP.NET application. When IIS is running in 5.0 isolation mode, the app works fine - calls to the legacy dll are processed without error. When IIS is running in the default 6.0 mode, the app is able to initiate the Unmanaged.dll (InitMe()), but dies during a later call to it (ProcessString()). I'm pulling my hair out here. I've moved the unmanaged dll's to various locations, tried all kinds of security settings and searched long and hard for a solution. Help! Sample code: [DllImport("Unmanaged.dll", EntryPoint="initME", CharSet=System.Runtime.InteropServices.CharSet.Ansi, CallingConvention=CallingConvention.Cdecl)] internal static extern int InitME(); //Calls to InitMe work fine - Unmanaged.dll initiates and writes some entries in a dedicated log file [DllImport("Unmanaged.dll", EntryPoint="processString", CharSet=System.Runtime.InteropServices.CharSet.Ansi, CallingConvention=CallingConvention.Cdecl)] internal static extern int ProcessString(string inStream, int inLen, StringBuilder outStream, ref int outLen, int maxLen); //Calls to ProcessString cause the app to crash, without leaving much of a trace that I can find so far
