• How to use multiple instances of gcc?

  I have both gcc 4.7.3 and 4.8.1 installed But on running gcc --version I get gcc (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.3-1ubuntu1) 4.7.3 Copyright (C) 2012 Free Software Foundation, Inc. This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. I am an Ubuntu newbie and I don't know much about updating symbolic-links... I searched the Internet, and found out about update-alternatives but was reluctant to use it... Please can someone help me in choosing 4.8 over 4.7 & also tell me is it bad to have 2 versions of same gcc?

  Is there any direct way do contact a „real” person, an YouTube employer? Someone created an account for the company I work for (previous employer). She entered some password and e-mail. The provided e-mail was valid, but since last login (more than two years), we changed our domain, and this e-mail is probably not valid anymore (and we even don't know it), co we can't use option to reset password. I have used all the options in YouTube help center, and no one worked. Also we can't contact this previous employer to get any data she entered in the registration form. The only data I know is the username. All the movies present the products of our company, there are links to our site in movie descriptions, so there should be no problem to prove that the account is ours. This is an urgent case, becouse the movies contain outdated information.

• Why use string.Empty over "" when assigning to a string object

  I've been running StyleCop over my code and one of the recommendations SA1122 is to use string.Empty rather than "" when assigning an empty string to a value. My question is why is this considered best practice. Or, is this considered best practice? I assume there is no compiler difference between the two statements so I can only think that it's a readability thing? • Content appearing under multiple categories; anything I can do to prevent duplicate penalty?

  I'm working with a CMS that allows me to post content in to multiple categories. So, I have this link: www.site.com/category/green-cars Here are the GREEN cars TITLE: A Big green car INTRO: this is a great big green car. But then I have this link: www.site.com/category/big-cars Here are the BIG cars TITLE: A Big green car INTRO: this is a great big green car. So essentially - for every item of content, header and the intro sentence is the same regardless of the category the item appears in. Will a search engine penalise the site for having the same content in this way? I've looked at canonical links, but I don't think this is relevant here. All my content points to the same page - but the content may appear in multiple categories first. Or am I worrying about nothing? Thanks.

• Is there an easier way to implement 301 redirects when converting a site to WordPress

  I have just converted a website to WordPress. The old site has hundreds of hard-coded html files, and the new site does not match the old site's directory structure or file naming system (bad SEO in the original site), so I can't place any "blanket" 301 redirects. Its been at least 2 months, and the old links are still appearing in Google searches, despite a google-friendly sitemap.xml. Do I need to hardcode a 301 for every individual page in my htaccess file, or am I just misunderstanding 301s and apache? Is there some other way I can update Google about the fact that my entire site structure has changed?

• Can mass different log-in pages result in SEO duplicate and/or low quality punishments?

  I have internal pages that rely on an external API which I would like to build upon user request. Two options I thought about: Make lots of 'thin' pages that specifies that if you want content about X, you need to log-in, and then the page will be built. Pros: user understands what he'll get when logging in. Cons: SEO implications of such a solution due to the mass 'low quality' and 'cross-sites duplicate content' Make them all redirect to ONE same generic log-in page. Pros: No duplicate low quality content. Cons: Lots of internal links to the same log-in page. Which would you recommend?

• Firefox: middle mouse button stopped working

  In Firefox, middle mouse button/wheel has been assigned "Open link in new tab" action for a while now, by default. Since I ran Software Update tonight, this action doesn't work in Firefox anymore. To be specific, middle mouse click doesn't open links anymore. At the same time, it closes tabs just fine (middle-click a tab == 'Close tab'). I don't know the update details, but I remember that Firefox update was there among other things. I tried running Firefox with a clean profile and middle button did work there, so something must've changed with existing settings.

• Will Google Analytics track URLs that just redirect?

  I have a link on my site. That links goes to another URL on my site. The code on the server sees that resource being requested and redirects the browser to another website. Will Google Analytics be able to know that the user requested the URL from my server and was redirected? Specifically, I set up a /buy link on my watchmecode.net site to try and track who is clicking the "Buy & Download" button. This link/button hits my server, and my server immediately does a redirect to the PayPal processing so the user can buy the screencast. Is Google Analytics going to know that the user hit the /buy URL on my site, and track that for me? If not, what can I do to make that happen?

• Q&amp;A: Will my favourite ORM Foo work with SQL Azure?

  short answer: Quite probably, as SQL Azure is very similar to SQL Server longer answer: Object Relational Mappers (ORMs) that work with SQL Server are likely but not guaranteed to work with SQL Azure. The differences between the RDBMS versions are small – but may cause problems, for example in tools used to create the mapping between objects and tables or in generated SQL from the ORM which expects “certain things” :-) More specifically: ADO.NET Entity Framework / LINQ to Entities can be used with SQL Azure, but the Visual Studio designer does not currently work. You will need to point the designer at a version of your database running of SQL Server to create the mapping, then change the connection details to run against SQL Azure. LINQ to SQL has similar issues to ADO.NET Entity Framework above NHibernate can be used against SQL Azure DevExpress XPO supports SQL Azure from version 9.3 DataObjects.Net supports SQL Azure Open Access from Telerik works “seamlessly”  - their words not mine :-) The list above is by no means comprehensive – please leave a comment with details of other ORMs that work (or do not work) with SQL Azure. • How do I port my Ubuntu from my Desktop to Laptop

  Hi, I am currently using Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my desktop box. I have got a new laptop and I will be using it from now on. But I will have to do the setup all over again (setting up applications/updates). Plus many of my preferences and tweaks I've had in my desktop will be lost and those too I will have to all over again. Is there an easy way where I can just take image or something and use it in my laptop?? Any help/pointers/links are much appreciated.

• Should I index my mobile duplicate of my desktop website on google?

  I have a duplicate of http://he.thenamestork.com with the url http://he.thenamestork.com/mobile - all files are duplicated while the mobile version has a slightly different content. Notice that when I write 'mobile' I only mean regular HTML4 with smartphone friendly CSS. I have a series of redirects (using .htaccess) that allows smartphone users land directly on the mobile versions. But I wonder, shound I index the mobile version as well so those users will be able to get direct, faster links? And what is the proper way of doing that without causing problem in google search? I guess I'm asking if there's a way to get google display regular urls for desktop users and ../mobile/.. urls for smartphone users, and if it is smart SEOwise.

• How can I enable auto-switching HDMI sound on Ubuntu 12.04?

  I've just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my Lenovo G550 notebook and decided to test the main thing I use it for, on Windows: watching movies and series on my living room TV. Plugged in the HDMI cable, screen auto-configured nicely - awesome. But the sound is coming through my notebook's speakers, instead of my TV. Searched for almost an hour on Google, found a couple of things - nothing that helped, though. • Interacting with IE using sendkeys from Excel

  I'm trying to write an application which uses values from excel and then switches to a web application using sendkeys. The problem I am having is that I cannot used sendkeys ("{ENTER}") or sendkeys ("^o") as I don't have the access for that. I'm trying to automate a very trivial admin task. I've thought about using the mouse to interact with the links as well as pausing and waiting for the user to just hit return but so far have been unable to come up with a solution. Do you think there is anyway around this? I have some VBA knowledge (enough to get me this far) but not a great deal.

• How to to let Google know about dynamic content?

  Im looking for the best practice to let Google know about a vast number of dynamically created content. Let's say (I mean - dream) that I'm Facebook, and I want to let Google to index all the users' posts. Sitemap.xml may be the answer for this but they are limited to 50,000 URLs in each site map. I know that I can create 500 sitemaps and create a sitemap for sitemaps, but they are also limited, 25,000,000 URLS sounds quite enough at the moment, but could cause problems in the future. I.E - stackoverflow already has 3 Million posts, probably sitemap is not the solution for them. Creating a page with paging, and links to all the dynamic data. i guess this is what stackoverflow did by creating this page here: http://stackoverflow.com/questions So I think that Option 2 is the answer, but it seems to me that sitemaps might have some added value. So what should i do?

  No clue on a title for this, someone feel free to suggest an edit. I have a client that has a website. He owns around 200 domains, and wants each domain to contain content from the main website. The header, footer, and navigation bars will remain the same for each domain, but the actual page content will vary (obviously duplicate content issues, open to suggestions) He wants each individual page to be its own separate domain, rather than a url within the main domain. (page1.com page2.com etc - NOT site.com/page1.html, however the file is actually hosted at site.com/page1.html - all links will direct to site.com/whatever accordingly) What would be the best place to start reading / learning on how to do this, and what concerns/considerations should be taken into mind?

  Hi All, We currently have Analytics tracking codes running throughout our site including our Sub Domains. What I would like to do is create different Profiles under the same account segmenting the sub domains by means of filters. Currently I am just excluding the hostname of the main website by using the following custom filter: Exclude: Hostname Filter pattern: ^www.mydomain.co.za(.*) I know this isn't the proper method of doing this though and have some of the main domains links coming through in the data. I wonder the same thing: how is a Codeing Dojo organized? What is the structure of a meeting? How would one pick Katas? What do you plan ahead of time?
