• Google Chrome user agent, wrong language

  Hello! After some months, my Chrome(now 10.0.648.127 beta; but I tried with the lastest stable too) displayed some popular sites in English, instead of my Chrome & system language, which is Hungarian... I saw my User-Agent, which shows in Chrome: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.16 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/10.0.648.127 Safari/534.16 But in Firefox: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; hu-HU; rv:1.9.2.15) Gecko/20110303 Ubuntu/10.04 (lucid) Firefox/3.6.15, what is correct... My question is: How can I change my user-agent(maybe dynamically, by version)? I tried with google-chrome --user-agent "text", but it failed in the newest versions.

• A few meta questions about making flash games

  A few questions for a beginner game maker without an artist. Is there a site where flash game creators can download (and use) free art? I don't need character sprites but environments like trees, clouds, platforms, etc. Is there a site where a programmer can collaborate with an artist and a composer? (Even if so, the chances are low for a beginner with no portfolio to find an artist willing to collaborate, right?) Do you have recommended sites for asking action script questions (dedicated solely to flash?) Thanks!

• CSS practices: negative positioning

  I'm somewhat of a novice to CSS. Anyway, I noticed that an extremely common method used in CSS is to have negative or off-screen positioning, whether it be to hide text or preload images or what have you. Even on SE sites, like StackOverflow and this website, have #hlogo a { text-indent: -999999em } set in their CSS. So I guess I have a few questions. is this valid CSS? or is it just a "hack"? are there downsides to doing things this way? why is this so common? aren't there better ways to hide content?

• can a guy with embedded system background go into game development

  Well, I finished my Masters in Embedded Systems, and I am working in GUI development, and working with graphic tools and images and GUI's keep me glued to my seat more than working on code for MUP/MUC . And I want to give game development a Fair chance, try out developing a game from scratch using basic libraries then tryout the same in a free/open source game engine and there is a good chance I may fall in love with it, but it is poissible for a person with an Electrical and Electronics Bachelors and Embedded Systems Masters ( just a years experience in the field) go into game development and be successful in the profession. • Can't find Localhost files

  Hope you can help. This is my first time trying Ubuntu/Linux. I am logged in as root I have downloaded and installed LAMP and PHPMYADMIN. I get the test page under localhost say that It works and is installed Correctly. I have also put my files in the /var/www. they are PHP files When I put the address localhost/(page name.php) I get an error saying Not Found The requested URL /index.php was not found on this server. Apache/2.2.22 (Ubuntu) Server at localhost Port 80 I Have put the files in the wrong folder?? If I look in the "/etc/ap[ache2/sites-available/default", It tells my my DocumentRoot is /var/www Would love somehelp on this please Many thanks GF

• Online Advertising And Marketing Your Services?

  I have been working on freelance sites for a good 4 or 5 years, bending over backwards to build a decent portfolio and generate great ratings. I take huge pride in my work (web applications). I'm completely lost because when I think what would happen if I suddenly lost my freelance account it isn't a pretty picture. I have literally no idea where else I could advertise my services apart from google paid advertising. Any suggestions? I'd of course be more than willing to pay for marketing and such. I've been searching google for ages and can't find much advice on where to advertise to secure good clients for web development work. I say good clients because I mean actual business owners, not somebody else who is outsourcing to me (where do they find clients?). I'd appreciate any help.

  I want to AJAX enable all of my Add To Cart buttons because search engine bots are indexing these and not paying attention to my robots file or site map. I just don't want to loose potential customers. I have seen a number of top sites using heavily JavaScript support content, including Amazon, is it OK to follow the trend? The rest of my site progressively degrades, but I would really like to implement this because of the benefits to the customer (instant satisfaction), my infrastructure (constant page rebuilds), and allowing me to use SEO tools to optimize without the tool picking up thousands of "Add to Cart" widgets in my catalog. • How to handle canonical url changes like Stack Overflow

  Stack Overflow sites all have pretty urls which include the question title. In the HTML it also have canonical url for that page. I just found out that when I change the question title, the url is changed immediately. The canonical url is also updated. Does it mean that as long as the page with the old canonical url redirects to the new canonical url, then search engines will update their records of the canonical url as well? Is there anything else that one can actively do to make the url change even more smoother?

• Why use flash to as content headings? Why not?

  A large number of sites lately which use Flash to replace what would be simple HTML headings (h1, h2, h3). Some of them do it consistently for every header. Why would you do this? What are the pros and cons of this? This seems strange to me and really inefficient, particularly since a page can have dozens of headers. I notice this because I use Flash Block (which temporarily disables Flash), so not everyone may have seen it. Just today I landed here with 4 flash headers. I've seen dozens of such use of Flash this week alone, and I am wondering if this has some benefits.

  When linking pages, does google give higher value to href="http://www.mydomain.com" than href="/"? I am wondering because I have heard that (for SEO) it is better to provide the full http address when linking to the sites homepage. As I thought about it, I wondered why that would be. Would google really assign higher value to href="http://www.mydomain.com" instead of href="/"? They both mean the same thing. Do you guys know or have any resources on this?

  I know this is considered best practise to prevent cookie hijacking. I would like to adopt this approach, but ran across a problem on our forum where the users post images which either aren't posted with URL's over HTTPS or the url itself doesn't support HTTPS. This throws up a lot of ugly browser warnings. I see I have two options: Disable HTTPS for the forum Force all user posted content to start with // in the url so it selects the right protocol, if it doesn't support HTTPS so be it Do I have any other options?   I have been working with web sites and web development for a long time and as a result I am able to build and launch complex websites (social network, dating site, stackoverflow, etc.) in little time (1-3 weeks). Problem is: I know very little about CSS, page layout, photoshop and graphic design. Of course I know HTML but when it comes to putting together something that looks good I am horrible. I just don't have the artistic skills. I wanted to launch some websites without any silly or naive intent to take over the world. Just for fun and to improve the portfolio. How do you guys recommend that I approach this problem of "finding this right partner" with the same mindset? Where should I look for this person? I have no idea... :(

• Targeting advertising for T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile users

  We'd like to target our advertising to Virgin Mobile users. However, Virgin Mobile is actually on the T-Mobile network. So when we do a lookup of the IP address it reports T-Mobile. So this gives 2 problems: No way to target Virgin Mobile When we target T-Mobile we accidentally target Virgin Mobile users too. We actually have 2 separate sites for T-Mobile and Virgin Mobile - So is there any way we can make sure we send people to the right site?
