  • Can't (re)Install VLC (removed by update{again})

    I use VLC a lot, And When 2.0 came out Ubuntu did not update to that version, the REPO had the older version even months later, So I added the daily repo: http://ppa.launchpad.net/videolan/stable-daily/ubuntu and that worked for a while, after a few months later I received a 'Distribution upgrade' and when I installed it, it removed VLC. when I tried to re-install it gave me a bunch of unmet dependency's, so I disabled the source, ran apt-get update, and tried to install the older VLC, that did not work either. I eventually found a web page, and it helped me get it working, and I was also able to get the 'Stable Daily' working too But last night, I got another 'disto upgrade' and it uninstalled VLC again. when I try to reinstall from daily I get: The following packages have unmet dependencies: vlc : Depends: fonts-freefont-ttf but it is not installable Depends: vlc-nox (= 2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libvlccore5 (>= 2.0.0) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: vlc-plugin-notify (= 2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: vlc-plugin-pulse (= 2.0.3+git20121005+r392-0~r42~precise1) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages. and from the default source: vlc : Depends: vlc-nox (= 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libvlccore5 (>= 2.0.0) but it is not going to be installed Recommends: vlc-plugin-notify (= 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) but it is not going to be installed vlc-plugin-pulse : Depends: vlc-nox (= 2.0.3-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) but it is not going to be installed Depends: libvlccore5 (>= 2.0.0) but it is not going to be installed E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.   • Belgrade Open Source Software Development Center

    A new Open Source Software Development Center is open at University of Belgrade Serbia. It centers around using Java & NetBeans as open source projects to learn from and contribute to. Assistant Professor Zoran Sevarac says that not only does the center allow him to teach software development using open source projects, but also "we are improving our University courses based on the experience we get from working on open source code."  Some of the projects underway are a NetBeans UML plugin; Neuroph (a Java neural network framework, with a NetBeans Platform-based UI); a NetBeans DOAP Plugin; WorkieTalkie (NetBeans chat plugin); and 2D and 3D visualization plugins for NetBeans. Here's video describing the NetBeans UML plugin: University of Belgrade also has an official university course about open source development, where students learn to use development tools, work in teams, participate in open source projects and learn from real world software development projects.   • What can I send back to the browser while I wait for PHP execution?

    So....I have a PHP page that involves a lot of backend execution, namely 'exec' calls to run shell commands on the host server. This can take upwards of a few minutes depending on the calls involved. (If you look below, each recursion through the exec calls is mounting a LUN; I'd like to sometimes do upwards of 100 per execution.)   • Computer crashes on resume from standby almost every time

    I am running Ubuntu 12.04 on a Core i5 2500K and ASRock Z68 Pro3-M motherboard (no graphics card, hd is a WD Green 1TB, and cd drive is some cheap lite-on drive). Since installing 12.04, my computer has been freezing after resume, but not every time. When I start to resume, it starts going normally with a blinking cursor on the screen and then sometimes it will continue on to the gnome 3 unlock screen. Most of the time, however, it will blink for a little bit and then the monitor will flip modes and shut off due to no signal. Pressing keys on the keyboard gets no response (num lock light doesn't respond, Ctrl-Alt-F1 fails to drop it into a terminal, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesn't work) and so I assume the computer is crashed. The worst part is, the logs look entirely normal.   • EXC_BAD_ACCESS and KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS after intiating a print sequence.

    MAC G4/1.5GHz/2GB/1TB+ OS10.4.11 Start up Volume has been erased/complete reinstall with updated software. Current problem only occurs when printing to an Epson Artisan 800 [USB as well as Ethernet connected] when using Macromedia FreeHand 10.0.1.67. All other apps/printers work fine. Memory has been removed/swapped/reinstalled several times, CPU was changed from 1.5GB to 1.3GB. Page(s) will print, but application quits within a second or two after selecting "print." Apple has never replied, Epson hasn't a clue, and I am befuddled!! Perhaps there is GURU out their who and see a bigger-better picture and understands how to interpret all of this stuff. If so, it would be a terrific pleasure to get a handle on how to cure this problem or get some A M M U N I T I O N to fire in the right direction. I thank you in advance.     Writing about changes in the Denali Memory Manager In his last post Rusi mentioned: " In previous SQL versions only the 8k allocations were limited by the ‘max server memory’ configuration option.  Allocations larger than 8k weren’t constrained." In SQL Server versions before Denali single page allocations and multi-Page allocations are handled by different components, the Single Page Allocator (which is responsible for Buffer Pool allocations and governed by 'max server memory') and the Multi-Page allocator (MPA) which handles allocations of greater than an 8K page. If there are many multi-page allocations this can affect how much memory needs to be reserved outside 'max server memory' which may in turn involve setting the -g memory_to_reserve startup parameter. We'll follow up with more generic articles on the new Memory Manager structure, but in this post I want to clarify what might cause these larger allocations. So what kinds of query result in MPA activity? I was asked this question the other day after delivering an MCM webcast on Memory Manager changes in Denali. After asking around our Dev team I was connected to one of our test leads Sangeetha who had tested the plan cache, and kindly provided this example of an MPA intensive query: A workload that has stored procedures with a large # of parameters (say > 100, > 500), and then invoked via large ad hoc batches, where each SP has different parameters will result in a plan being cached for this “exec proc” batch. This plan will result in MPA.   Exec proc_name @p1, ….@p500 Exec proc_name @p1, ….@p500 . . . Exec proc_name @p1, ….@p500 Go   Another workload would be large adhoc batches of the form: Select * from t where col1 in (1, 2, 3, ….500) Select * from t where col1 in (1, 2, 3, ….500) Select * from t where col1 in (1, 2, 3, ….500) … Go  In Denali all page allocations are handled by an "Any size page allocator" and included in 'max server memory'.   • Chrome Rewrite of Host: in HTML GET

    At some point in the past I had a plugin for firefox that rewrites the HTML headers being sent by your browser, specifically the "Host:" line in the HTML GET request. I can't find this plugin online. Does anyone know a plugin/way to do this? I am looking for one for Chrome but any would work. The specific reason for this is I am trying to work on a wordpress website which I just did a DNS change on. Until that DNS change goes into effect I can use the IP but since its a shared host the Host line isn't set right.

  • dpkg unsatisfied dependencies, now apt-get wants to remove whole system

    firstly, I'm sorry for my terminal output in portuguese, but I guess it is still understandable. I am using Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 and I tried to update the GNOME Online Accounts packages by downloading the following .deb files from packages.ubuntu.com for the Ubuntu 14.10 version: libgoa-backend-1.0-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-backend-1.0-1_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-1.0-dev_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb libgoa-1.0-0b_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb gnome-online-accounts_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb gir1.2-goa-1.0_3.12.4-1_amd64.deb After downloading them in the same folder, I run the command sudo dpkg -i *.deb, but it didn't install the packages, instead it showed errors due to packages which them depend doesn't meet the required version (and Ubuntu have no way to install them since they are not in this version's repositories). So now every time I want to install anything through apt-get, Ubuntu tells me to run apt-get -f install to fix the errors.     I have never programmed in Silverlight, but I hate it. The reason is that I need it to watch videos on one of the site I watch, but like every other day I need to update the plugin. Why is Silverlight so unstable ??? they just can't get it right and I have to update that plugin all the time. P.S. I'm now thinking of somehow hacking that video stream and bypass the silverlight(so I could just throw it away). P.S. Its not updated like any other FF plugin, because its special and you need to download an exe ... pathethic.

  • How can I get six Xbox controllers to provide input to an HTML5 game?

    I'm creating a six player HTML 5 game designed to be played locally (Red Ice). I've previous set up handling 7 Wiimotes using something along the lines of Joy2Key to map each input for each player to a separate keyboard key, but Wiimotes are pretty hard on the hands for these types of games and not very ergonomic so I thought I'd try and get Xbox controller support. I don't believe that any simple key mapping solution will work due to the nature of the directional stick. My inclination is that this will require a browser plugin and if so I'd prefer to write the plugin for Google Chrome. How do I create a Chrome browser plugin to handle multiple Xbox controllers or is there some other way? Please do not answer this question saying it can't be done, because it absolutely can. EDIT: I don't believe any keymapping/mouse simulating solution will work unless it can reliably distinguish six axis of inputs, one per player.

I use Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (32-bit) and I didn't bother to install the Flash plugin for Firefox as I am using a netbook and sometimes Flash caused firefox to crash. What I would like to ask is if I had the link to the video, is there some way I can download it and watch it offline (via VLC) so that I don't need to install Flash plugin? Command line or GUI techniques is welcome. Based on what I have read, using the /tmp technique requires Flash plugin to be installed and the video to be loaded before I can go scavenge it in the said directory. Note that I also want to dload videos from site aside from youtube.

I'm figuring I gotta do something with the activity stream, but it seems like the stream is based on the user who is currently logged in, which is not what I want. So what should I do? Use a nifty plugin that does the trick (maybe someone knows a plugin I don't know of, as I've already tried the bbPress Latest Discussion plugin) Hardcode a forum-activity loop into the page-template file, using the is_front_page() function? The totem plugin was not always working correctly with Opera, and I'm actually depending on the [Copy URL] feature of gecko-mediaplayer. However that plugin does some inept buffering of videos. It seems to default to 20% caching regardless of what you set in the preferences window. This is quite annoying for big video files. Does anyone know the actual way to configure the cache= size. Which is the real configuration filename under Ubuntu?

  • What's the best Scala build system?

    I've seen questions about IDE's here -- Which is the best IDE for Scala development? and What is the current state of tooling for Scala?, but I've had mixed experiences with IDEs. Right now, I'm using the Eclipse IDE with the automatic workspace refresh option, and KDE 4's Kate as my text editor. Here are some of the problems I'd like to solve: use my own editor IDEs are really geared at everyone using their components. I like Kate better, but the refresh system is very annoying (it doesn't use inotify, rather, maybe a 10s polling interval). The reason I don't use the built-in text editor is because broken auto-complete functionalities cause the IDE to hang for maybe 10s. rebuild only modified files The Eclipse build system is broken. It doesn't know when to rebuild classes. I find myself almost half of the time going to project-clean. Worse, it seems even after it has finished building my project, a few minutes later it will pop up with some bizarre error (edit - these errors appear to be things that were previously solved with a project clean, but then come back up...). Finally, setting "Preferences / Continue launch if project contains errors" to "prompt" seems to have no effect for Scala projects (i.e. it always launches even if there are errors). build customization I can use the "nightly" release, but I'll want to modify and use my own Scala builds, not the compiler that's built into the IDE's plugin. It would also be nice to pass [e.g.] -Xprint:jvm to the compiler (to print out lowered code). fast compiling Though Eclipse doesn't always build right, it does seem snappy -- even more so than fsc. I looked at Ant and Maven, though haven't employed either yet (I'll also need to spend time solving #3 and #4). I wanted to see if anyone has other suggestions before I spend time getting a suboptimal build system working. Thanks in advance! UPDATE - I'm now using Maven, passing a project as a compiler plugin to it. It seems fast enough; I'm not sure what kind of jar caching Maven does. A current repository for Scala 2.8.0 is available [link]. The archetypes are very cool, and cross-platform support seems very good. However, about compile issues, I'm not sure if fsc is actually fixed, or my project is stable enough (e.g. class names aren't changing) -- running it manually doesn't bother me as much. If you'd like to see an example, feel free to browse the pom.xml files I'm using [github]. UPDATE 2 - from benchmarks I've seen, Daniel Spiewak is right that buildr's faster than Maven (and, if one is doing incremental changes, Maven's 10 second latency gets annoying), so if one can craft a compatible build file, then it's probably worth it...

  • Ripping MP3s in Rhythmbox Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit)?

    I installed a couple of days ago Ubuntu 12.10 (64 bit). I today tried ripping a CD in the MP3 format. However, whenever I try to rip, it says it is missing an extra multimedia plugin "Gstreamer extra plug-ins (i386)". I then try to install the :i386 version of the gstreamer-ugly plugins, but then I get the same problem but with the id3-demuxer (or something similar) The Terminal output I get from both problems (but replace the "MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) encoder" with the "ID3-demuxer" name) is: james@clefairy:~$ rhythmbox (rhythmbox:24122): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed Rhythmbox-Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|rhythmbox|MPEG-1 Layer 3 (MP3) encoder|encoder-audio/mpeg, mpegversion=(int)1, layer=(int)3 /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/gobject/constants.py:24: Warning: g_boxed_type_register_static: assertion `g_type_from_name (name) == 0' failed import gobject._gobject It doesn't help that each time I have to install/remove the entire Gstreamer-ugly collection each time - I can't find that specific file.
