• Server costs and back loading for mobile devices

  A company approached me to design an MMO for the mobile platform and I have the perfect idea for them. My question is how much would a server for a FTP game that has both a PVE element and PVP cost? Also do you think that it would be better or is it even possible to back load the data onto the phones (trying to come up with some interesting way to back up the data in case of emergency). I don't want the game to be totally online reliant (I want to appeal to not only phone users but also iPod touch users) and for there to be an offline mode. If you can't tell this is my first game besides simple projects I've done on the side. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• What Do I Need To Know About Servers In a Web Development Role?

  I know that may sound a little vague, so I'll try and explain a little further... After being self employed developer for many years I'm now in search of a commercial web developer role. My only experience with servers and hosting is uploading through FTP and playing around with CPanel/WHM a little. The role's I'm going for are web development PHP, MySQL, HTML, CSS type roles, but in recent interviews I've been asked questions about setting up things on the server, that I had no idea what was being said... which wasn't ideal! Without knowing more than I do, it's hard to explain what exactly I'm looking to learn, but it's basically just the server elements I should know as a web developer? If you're a web developer, do you have any dealing with the server apart from uploading files, and if so, what? Are things like Subversion(SVN) and version control systems often set up by the web development team, could that be what they were talking about?

  I am just starting up a small website development business and one of the issues I am having is remembering passwords and account information for clients hosting, cpanel, ftp accounts etc. I was wondering what is the most suitable system / industry standard for controlling such information? Pretty marginal on the close there... I read the FAQ and I felt list this could be a common issue for webmasters, its defiantly not a coding questions so stackoverflow is out of the question and its not a broad question its focused on one particular aspect of being a webmaster.

  Recently, Here at the company, more than one programmer was appointed in charge for a LightSwitch(C#) software development project and immediately there was a need of some sort of source control/sync. We have never used Team Foundation Server but we'd gladly use it if it's worth it. Is it the right tool to use for synchronising code between programmers? Does it have the needed features? Do you have any other tool in mind? (I have used TortoiseSVN but it was too simple and 'texty' if you know what I mean, we need a professional tool) What other features does Team Foundation has that we can use? (if you did not understand any of the above please ask me to clarify further)

• Needs management tool for .java files

  When I open the src file in the project folder in Package Explorer in Eclipse, it says the following: Error retrieving content description for resource '/GuiAdd/src/GuiAdd.Java.' Now, the directories of the source projects shown in Eclipse Package explorer doesn't always have the source file to link to, causing this message. I need a way to sync the folders in the correct directory without overwriting the newest ones. Some source files I project files of the root which the Package explorer links to may be the correct versions but other source files in the root may not have the latest source or any source. I am not using svn/git or other depository programs.

• Cannot access my own web page

  I am developing, learning and experimenting with php,html,javascript,flash and so on. Having web hosting and all of the cpanel, phpmyadmin and other utilities. One day, while updating information, connection between my computer and website just went down. I found out that it is only from this computer, where I cannot access anything. I don't know what is the reason I cannot access website, however this is what I have checked so far: Everything else opens normally, having problem only with my page. Cannot access FTP,cpanel or any kind of information related to the domain and hosting ipconfigs detects IP, but shows request timed out (so its not browser related) Turned off Firewall,AV, Rebooted computer Cleared caches,temp,cookies,histry with CCleaner Checked connectivity with both (wired,wireless) networks ISP has dynamic IP that has been changed about 3 times since issue Checked host file I am out of ideas and understanding what could cause this kind of issue, however couple minutes ago, found out that everything works with proxy server (when adding IP and port to the browsers) Can someone point out what should I check or try to get rid of this problem?

• How can I choose a different Ubuntu One default local folder?

  I would like to tell Ubuntu One to sync with '~/Public/Ubuntu One' rather than '~/Ubuntu One'. Since I'm using it on Arch Linux, I don't have any right-click option for that. I tried to edit ~/.config/ubuntuone/syncdaemon.conf and add the line root_dir = ~/new/folder (as suggested in this thread), but the file is automatically reverted to its previous state. Also, the command u1sdtool hangs and does apparently nothing - I have to use Ctrl + C to close it. Is there another way to setup the default Ubuntu One default local folder?

  Some background: I'm employed at a small, Australia-based web agency that is dipping it's toe into Mobile Application development (iOS). The project that I'm working on provides a way for users to save medication dosage information which is sync'd with a backend server. Users must agree to ToS, Disclaimer etc before using the application. This is my first iOS application, and the project is currently over budget. As a result, management is not devoting the resources to Q&A and is pushing instead for more features. I am an employee of the agency, that has been contracted by a non-for-profit. The application will probably be released under our agency's name, but we also have the option of releasing it as the not-for-profit. My question is, if there are bugs found in the application, and as a result a user takes an incorrect dosage of a medication, am I personally liable? Is there anything that I can or should do in order to protect myself personally?

• 12.04 - sound is laggy when running games through Wine

  Lenovo U400 Wine 1.5.5 Ubuntu 12.04 with all updates applied I'm experiencing severe (~500ms) audio lag in all games run in Wine. Portal 2, Half-Life, World of Goo, and Fallout are all exhibiting this problem. When I run winecfg though and click the "Test Sound" button at the bottom of the Audio tab, the sound effect appears to play immediately. So I'm not sure what's going on. I don't think it's a problem with PulseAudio by itself since totem videos and Youtube clips both play in perfect sync. Anyone have any ideas on where to start fixing this? thanks! (edit: I thought this was limited to Steam games but I installed a non-Steam game and I now see that's not the case. I get audio lag in other apps too.)

• Client Side Prediction

  I have a question regarding Client Side prediction. Ive tried to search topics about my specific problem but couldn't find anything which really answered my problem. Most tutorials and explanations assume that the Client sends messages like "Move my player up by 1 Position", but what if i send messages like "Set my player's velocity to x"? Since it's hard to explain with text, i made a graphic explaining my problem. The main problem is, that the player sets his own velocity, due to Client Side Prediction, earlier than the Server. • How to install Syngen?

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04. I found out that there is a near-obsolete program based on the obsolete Caml Special Light by someone at INRIA ( ftp.inria.fr, directory lang/caml-light ). The program is called Syngen. I need it to create Syntax diagrams. But i am not able to run the binaries that come with it, and i'm not able to compile the source because it needs a compiler called cmlc. Somebody help, i find REALLY less documentation about this in internet.

  I need to know how to set up a local webDav server on my PC so that goodreader on ipad can automatically sync with it over the local wifi network? I am really a rookie when it comes to setting up a web server and have tried various guides on the internet. I tried setting up a webdav server using IIS and forwarded the required ports and enabled webdav publishing but goodreader can find it in the local wifi network automatically nor is it able to connect even after manually entering the credendtials. So i'll be really greateful if someone who has successfully setup a webdav server for use with goodreader can point me on how to do it?

The main problem with them, is that you have to have your project be open source to use them, so anybody can edit them. So... is there some way I can have my own svn repositories on my own server?   We have to develop our own file management system in Java web application. We need to sync files between our main server and client severs and find out whether all the client server has all the latest version of files. Our files are in pdf, doc and xls format they changes every now and then as and when it is required. What we are thinking of using MD5 checksum to find out hashcode of files on Main server and store it in database. Same would be there in Client Servers database. After comparing records on database we would come to know whether client servers are synced or not. Please suggest if there are any better ways to do the same.

  I manage several WordPress websites, and successfully recently used the Automatic Upgrade feature to bring them up to 3.1. However, on one of the sites, I received a 503 (I believe it was 503). After that I was presented with "The service is unavailable." whenever I tried to access any page, including the index page, wp-admin, etc. I had similar problems before when a WordPress site got stuck in maintenance mode, and all I needed to do was login via FTP and rename or delete the .maintenance file. I tried that in this case, but that didn't do the trick. I am now presented with "Fatal error: Call to undefined function require_wp_db() in **\wp-settings.php on line 71" I can't figure out how to fix this problem, and I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas. As a result of this I installed apache and all the things that come associated with it, and also installed Joomla, and I got everything running well. My problem is, I need to make apache run this website locally, so I downloaded the public_html folder from the FTP server on my website, but I have absolutely no idea how to implement the website in order to make it run on apache. I've read a few guides, but they all tell me how to create a new website instead of helping me host a website already done.
