• Linear search vs Octree (Frustum cull)

  I am wondering whether I should look into implementing an octree of some kind. I have a very simple game which consists of a 3d plane for the floor. There are multiple objects scattered around on the ground, each one has an aabb in world space. Currently I just do a loop through the list of all these objects and check if its bounding box intersects with the frustum, it works great but I am wondering if if it would be a good investment in an octree. I only have max 512 of these objects on the map and they all contain bounding boxes. I am not sure if an octree would make it faster since I have so little objects in the scene.

• Using EPEL repos with Oracle Linux

  There's a Fedora project called EPEL which hosts a set of additional packages that can be installed on top of various distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Scientific Linux and of course also Oracle Linux. These packages are not distributed by the distribution vendor and as such also not supported by the vendors (including Oracle) however for users that want to pick up some extras that are useful, it's very easy to do this. All you need to do is download the EPEL RPM from the website, install it on Oracle Linux 5 or Oracle Linux 6 and run yum install or yum search to get the packages. example : # wget http://download.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/i386/epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # rpm -ivh epel-release-6-5.noarch.rpm # yum repolist Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, rhnplugin repo id repo name status epel Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux 6 - x86_64 7,124 The folks that build these repositories are doing a great job at adding very useful packages. • How to force Empathy Internet Messaging to change default webcam?

  I just recently bought a new webcam. It is USB powered. For personal reasons, I wish to not use the built in webcam that came with my netbook. I want to use this new one. I love empathy, it is a great chat client. But, I can't seem to switch my default webcam in empathy from the built in webcam, to the one I just bought. So, is there a way to force empathy to use the USB powered webcam, rather than the built in webcam?

• Google Analytics - TOS section pertaining to privacy

  The Google Analytics terms of service does do not allow to track "data that personally identifies an individual (such as a name, email address or billing information), or other data which can be reasonably linked to such information by Google". Does anybody have first-hand knowledge if this includes user ids which cannot be resolved by Google but can be linked to actual persons via an Analytics Users CRM system (e.g. a CRM linked to Analytics via API access) ? I used to think so, but if that where the case many ecommerce implementations would be illegal (since they store transactions id which can be linked to client's purchases). If anybody has insights about the intended meaning of the paragraph (preferably with a reliable source) it would be great if he/she could share :-)

  Watching YouTube videos on the Wii just got a whole lot easier; YouTube’s native Wii app streamlines the process and cuts out the need for the Internet Channel browser. Previous to this release you had to use the $5 Internet Channel and the Opera Browser to access YouTube. It worked but it wasn’t elegant by any means. • AndEngine Sprite position

  I had noticed the AndEngine a few days ago, and I tried to create basic game with a few Sprites.Sure, the engine makes the development process much more easier.However I found the sprite lacking a major functionally: Whenever there is a need to refer to the position of an Sprite the engine manipulates the position based on the top-left corner of sprite,this is not the best thing because there is a need to subtract/add the width/height to its position in order to refer to its center.However when we refer to he scale of the Sprite it scaled according to its center point (which is great) I find it very confusing to refer to its position each time differently.I solved that by extending the Sprite class and implementing my methods of setCenter and getCenter, I guess that not the best way to do so. Do you have any suggestion?

• How to cleanup a Local Repository?

  In my local repository each time i update the packages inside. The problem is: I have many versions of the same package. so, i need to delete the old versions in some way.(don't tell me to do it manually!!) Any ideas?!! Maybe a script that checks the version of each package keeping the newer version and deletind older ones can solve this issue. • Authorization pop-up requested by http://localhost:51675 every time I run Firefox

  Using Ubuntu 10.04. Whenever I run Firefox I get a pop up requesting authorisation. It says 'a user name and password are being requested by http://localhost:51675. The site says "server" I have tried all passwords I know and nothing is accepted. If I click 'cancel' it disappears but re-appears after about 5 minutes. This whole 'experience' is accompanied by a great deal of hard disc activity. Can anyone help with this?

• Will a programming professional certificate from a university enhance my resume/prospect for being hired?

I'm planning to take up an Online Certification in web programming or .NET programming from the University of Illinois through O'Reilly (see link) to keep busy this summer. Will that help me get a great job? I've heard some say that certifications will give you a cutting edge. I've heard others say that it doesn't really matter. What do you think? • Cannot Update through Manager or Terminal/ Software Center Does Not Work

  I installed Tor a few days ago via the terminal. I deleted some hashtags in the gedit polipo, and changed my proxy settings in chrome, but was unable to make it work and have since changed all of it back. I then downloaded the Tor browser bundle which works great, but ever since then have been unable to download updates or new software. The update manager says to "check internet connection" and the software center displays a mostly blank screen under apps like "rhythmbox" and just says "available from main source" when I click on "use this source" a refresh symbol appears on the upper right corner of the software center for a split second, and then nothing happens. The app does not download and isn't available in the dash. When I try via the terminal it says it's unable to connect to my ip address. I tried changing the server and unchecking all the repository options for software sources, all to no avail. WHAT DID I DO?????

• How much server bandwidth does an average RTS game require per month?

  My friend and I are going to write a multiplayer, multiplatform RTS game and are currently analyzing the costs of going with a client-server architecture. The game will have a small map with mostly characters, not buildings (think of DotA or League of Legends). The authoritative game logic will run on the server and message packet sizes will be highly optimized. We'd like to know approximately how much server bandwidth our proposed RTS game would use on a monthly basis, considering these theoretical constants: 100 concurrent users maximum 8 players maximum per game 10 ticks per second Bonus: If you can tell us approximately how much server RAM this kind of game would use that would also help a great deal. • Configuration of the network manager via DBus: how to set the ad hoc mode

  I have an hard nut to crack: a nice bottle of italian Chianti wine to the solver! :) To automatically configure Wifi, I first have to kill the network manager and than activate the wifi via the commandline: I do this all automatically in my application and works great. However... it is not the right way to do this. As the user has no network gui anymore to configure some other network access. A much better and transparent way would be to configure wifi directly via network manager over the DBus interface. I was able to configure it, but I wasn't able to set it to ad hoc mode... Searching the web for a while: a lot about configuration in general but nothing related to ad hoc mode. I think the only way to do figure that out is to look into the source code of the network manager...maybe someone already did it and he can answer.

• 11.10 runs really choppy and slow, but not if I choose "Gnome Classic"

  I'd like to use Unity with Ubuntu 11.10, but everything from Unity runs really choppy and slow. I have an ATI graphics card and I have installed the drivers through "Additional Drivers". The drivers work, as I can play 3d games flawlessly. When I drag the mouse box around or drag windows around, it is really choppy. I previously had Ubuntu 10.10 and everything worked fine. I installed gnome 3 on 11.10 and it does the same thing Unity does, very choppy and slow graphics. However, if I choose Gnome Classic, everything is fine. I can drag the mouse box all around with no problems. I can drag windows around and it looks and feels great. Is this a bug with Unity? Are others experiencing this? Or is there something I can do to fix this?

• How to categorize textures into atlases

  I am going to use texture atlasing for the first time in my games, and at first it seemed like a great idea to split textures into atlases by categorizing them by terrain themes e.g ForestTextures, WinterTextures etc. But that could cause a problem when for example a flower has to use transparency shader and other models use a diffuse shader. So those cannot be atlased into the same texture. Thus, would atlasing textures into themes as mentioned before and then splitting them by shader like ForestDiffuse and ForestTransparent be good? Or is there a better way to categorize and build them?

• Real performance of node.js

  I've got a question concerning node.js performance. There is quite lot of "benchmarks" and a lot of fuss about great performance of node.js. But how does it stand in real world? Not just process empty request at high speed. If someone could try to compare this scenario: Java (or equivalent) server running an application with complex business logic between receiving request and sending response. How would node.js deal with it? If there was need for a lot of JavaScript processing on server side, is node.js really so fast that it can execute JavaScript, and stand a chance against more heavyveight competitors?

• How to install Netgear N-300 UAB adapter WNA3100 on Ubuntu 12.04

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, the first thing I'm trying to do, is to setup my wireless adapter. I can see it using lsusb: beer@beer-linux:~$ lsusb ... Bus 002 Device 006: ID 0846:9020 NetGear, Inc. WNA3100(v1) Wireless-N 300 [Broadcom BCM43231] ... I have found a lot of dated instructions on the net and just wanted to know what the right way is to set it up on 12.04. I don't want to mess up a brand new install by tweaking things that don't need tweaking. According to most posts, you have to install the Windows drivers using the ndiswrapper package. Is this still the right way to go? If so, it would be great if someone could write down the steps to do this under 12.04

• Why are more programmers not freelance these days? [closed]

  Leaving the whole pie to only a few of them, amplifying the huge differences between the two status. Pay is a (huge) one, not having to do overtime is another. I leave the question open to hopefully get many great answers on all the different subjects that affects that feeling and decision not to go. EDIT: While this question is really global, I'll be interested in any studies, facts, articles, opinions regarding local markets such as US, India and even Australia in which I'm in love with. • Is there a way to group 2 or 3 gui windows so that they don't get lost behind other open windows?

  For instance floating panels and main window in Gimp are independent windows. If I change focus to a full window (e.g. Firefox by doing Alt-Shift) and go back to the main Gimp window I don't get back the floating panels also (I have to change to them as well in order to see them). It would be great if the 3 windows can be "tied" (or linked) together in order that they don't get lost behind other open windows when I change back to (make active window) any of them? I think this configuration (if it exists) should show itself more obviously in the gnome environment. This question seems to address the same problem but it doesn't seem to be accurately answered.
