• Authorization pop-up requested by http://localhost:51675 every time I run Firefox

  Using Ubuntu 10.04. Whenever I run Firefox I get a pop up requesting authorisation. It says 'a user name and password are being requested by http://localhost:51675. The site says "server" I have tried all passwords I know and nothing is accepted. If I click 'cancel' it disappears but re-appears after about 5 minutes. This whole 'experience' is accompanied by a great deal of hard disc activity. Can anyone help with this?

• How to set up an informational interview?

  I've heard a lot about informational interviews, but don't have the slightest idea how to actually set one up or run one effectively. I work as an SDET (SDE in Test) in an area with lots of great technical companies, and would like to have a better understanding of how different companies do testing. I have three sub-questions: Who would I get in contact with to set up informational interviews at a company that I'd like to learn about? How can I make sure the time is productive? And, how do I keep the interview from being a burden to the employee(s) whom I speak with?

• Point-in-time restore of database backup?

• is box-shadow (CSS3) really not ready to use? (according to "CAN I USE")

  I have a problem that I want you to help me, I am currently making a website, I am building that website on HTML5 and CSS3 technology, every feature I'd like to use I check it first in "CAN I USE", the technology I use most is box-shadow, and I already made some great things with it but, I have a doubt about the percentage of browser that don't support that technology, the percentage of browser that do not support box-shadow is around 17.12%, and if you see the conclusions (show options = other options = show conclusions) they say that that feature isn't ready yet because they are "Waiting for Opera Mini 5.0-6.0 to expire", I personally think that the best that we can do in order to make people update their browsers is not support older browser, but ... am I right thinking like this? will I have bad consecuences if I don't support older browsers? is worth to work twice just to support older browsers? should I still working with box-shadow?

• SQL Auto Close Options

  Found an interesting thing that others have run across but it is the first time I’ve seen it. A customer emailed to say that the SQL 2008 db that I had helped him with seemed to be going into recovery mode on a regular basis while watching the SQL Management Studio screen. Needless to say he was a bit nervous and about to take some drastic steps. Eventually he found that the Auto Close option was set to true. When this is set to true, the database automatically closes all connections and unlocks the mdf file after 300 milliseconds. When a new connection is made it spins backup… Great for xcopy deployment on a client machine but not a multi-user server based application. So the warning… if you have started a database with SQL express and then move it to a production SQL server, make sure you check that the Auto Close option is set to false. See options screen below:

• How to install Netgear N-300 UAB adapter WNA3100 on Ubuntu 12.04

  After a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, the first thing I'm trying to do, is to setup my wireless adapter. I can see it using lsusb: beer@beer-linux:~$ lsusb ... Bus 002 Device 006: ID 0846:9020 NetGear, Inc. WNA3100(v1) Wireless-N 300 [Broadcom BCM43231] ... I have found a lot of dated instructions on the net and just wanted to know what the right way is to set it up on 12.04. I don't want to mess up a brand new install by tweaking things that don't need tweaking. According to most posts, you have to install the Windows drivers using the ndiswrapper package. Is this still the right way to go? If so, it would be great if someone could write down the steps to do this under 12.04

• Skype no sound on Kubuntu 13.10

  I just performed a fresh install of Kubuntu 13.10 on my machine. Everything is working great except for Skype. I cannot get any form of audio playback in Skype. In the sound settings panel I get a bunch of different sound sources, none of which work! At the moment I have set it to "sysdefault (unknown)" I installed it using the deb package found on the official website. My phonon backend is using phonon-gstreamer. • Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed"

  After 10+ years of java/c# programming, I find myself creating either: abstract classes: contract not meant to be instantiated as-is. final/sealed classes: implementation not meant to serve as base class to something else. I can't think of any situation where a simple "class" (i.e. neither abstract nor final/sealed) would be "wise programming". Why should a class be anything other than "abstract" or "final/sealed" ? • Skills for RAD developer.

  I am about to embark on an exquisite journey. I have applied for an event, where in span of 48 straight hours, strangers meet, throw around some great ideas, decide on teams, and make a working prototype of IT project. All within 48 hours. I anticipate, that this will be very skill and ability intensive experience, and I want to be prepared. Since i will need to develop my part of the code quickly, I have a following question: What would be the most needed skills for these 48 hours? I do know, that things like proper documentation, version control and such are pretty important for a full fledged application/program/web development, but for this span of frantic coding? Background: I am a web developer, so answers applicable to web development would be more appreciated than others.

• Samsung driver for notebooks in Natty?

  Hi, I have a Samsung N150 Netbook and I installed Unity 11.04 to make some tests. But some functions do not work like backlight and vertical scroll on the touchpad. There are drivers for samsung notbooks and I know that there is a PPA. But not for Natty. Will the drivers be avalible some day in the kernel by default? Will Canonical add these drivers in the kernel, if the Kernel developers wont? I think this would be very usefull because Unity is great for Netbooks and Samsung Netbooks are really nice.

• Who Moved My Cheese DotNetNuke Edition

  Last week, I discussed a new change in 5.4 where we have backported the RibbonBar from DotNetNuke Professional to the Community Edition. Well that is not the only big change that is occurring with this release. We are also backporting the Telerik Editor Provider! This is another huge win for the community. Over the course of the last 7 years we have primarily had 2 different HTML editors that we have shipped with DotNetNuke. The first text editor we used was FreeTextBox. • Configuration of the network manager via DBus: how to set the ad hoc mode

  I have an hard nut to crack: a nice bottle of italian Chianti wine to the solver! :) To automatically configure Wifi, I first have to kill the network manager and than activate the wifi via the commandline: I do this all automatically in my application and works great. However... it is not the right way to do this. As the user has no network gui anymore to configure some other network access. A much better and transparent way would be to configure wifi directly via network manager over the DBus interface. I was able to configure it, but I wasn't able to set it to ad hoc mode... Searching the web for a while: a lot about configuration in general but nothing related to ad hoc mode. I think the only way to do figure that out is to look into the source code of the network manager...maybe someone already did it and he can answer.

  Great news! Oracle WebLogic Server is now free for developers! What does this mean for you? That you as a developer are permited to: "[...] deploy the programs only on your single developer desktop computer (of any type, including physical, virtual or remote virtual), to be used and accessed by only (1) named developer." • How to recognize a good programmer?

  Our company is looking for new programmers. And here comes the problem - there are many developers who look really great at the interview, seem to know the technology you need and have a good job background, but after two moths of work, you find out that they are not able to work in a team, writing some code takes them very long time, and moreover, the result is not as good as it should be. So, do you use any formalized tests (are there any?)? How do you recognize a good programmer - and a good person? Are there any simple 'good' questions that might reveal the future problems? ...or is it just about your 'feeling' about the person (ie., mainly your experience), and trying him out? • New EFI Laptop: After restart, Ubuntu boots to black screen?

  So, I've got this new laptop (Acer Aspire 5560 15") that's doing a funny thing.. If I cold booth the machine, everything is great! I see the grub menu, and Ubuntu 12.04 loads just fine. If I reboot within Ubuntu, I see the BIOS screen, but then nothing. No grub menu, no hard drive activity except for just a blip. I noticed that when installing Ubuntu this time, I had to create an EFI boot partition -- something I'm not used to. And I'm guessing that it has something to do with the issue. Could be totally wrong. Any ideas?

• Lenovo Y460 heats up with Ubuntu 11.10

  I'm new with Ubuntu and I'm enjoying my experience with Ubuntu 11.10 on my Lenovo ideapad Y460. I'm dual booting Ubuntu with Windows 7 64 bit. It's great using Ubuntu, however I noticed that my laptop heats up rather quickly when I use Ubuntu. Does this have to do with drivers? I have Nvidia GT 425M graphics, but I don't know if this information is relevant. My fans are just not working right as they do in Windows 7. Did I miss installing something or what am I doing wrong?

• Interacting with IE using sendkeys from Excel

  I'm trying to write an application which uses values from excel and then switches to a web application using sendkeys. The problem I am having is that I cannot used sendkeys ("{ENTER}") or sendkeys ("^o") as I don't have the access for that. I'm trying to automate a very trivial admin task. I've thought about using the mouse to interact with the links as well as pausing and waiting for the user to just hit return but so far have been unable to come up with a solution. Do you think there is anyway around this? I have some VBA knowledge (enough to get me this far) but not a great deal.
