  • Giant battery consumption with dual graphics solution (only i-gpu working)

    I use a Laptop with Intel Core i7 SandyBridge and integrated Intel HD3000 graphics as well as a Nvidia Geforce GTS 555M. So far, I got the impression my Laptop was running with the Nvidia graphics adapter only because the fan was always running on highest speed (and loudest noise) and it was getting very hot even when doing nothing. Also the battery is empty after ~40-50 minutes (while having ~4-5 hours with Intel graphics in Win7). Since this can't be healthy I wanted to switch to the integrated graphics instead. I was fairly surprised when the System Information showed me that the as graphics adapter I use "Intel M". Why is my battery empty so fast with Ubuntu? Without using the NVIDIA graphics adapter? Summary: I DONT WANT to use the Nvidia graphics adapter (OPTIMUS), I just want the Intel solution. As I have understood, the Intel solution is running already, emptying my battery 10x as fast as Win7. What is wrong? Any ideas?

  • How can I fix broken i915 drivers for Intel GPUs?

    I've got troubles getting the i915 drivers to work correctly on my laptop (HP Pavilion DM4 2101ea). Specifically, the laptop screen goes black and stays black after the splash graphic when booting both from USB key and from harddrive. To get anything on to the display after the splash screen I have to boot either with acpi=off nomodeset i915.modeset=0 I'd rather not turn ACPI off because I like my fans spinning and nomodeset is a bit overkill, so for now I'm booting with i915.modeset=0. Unfortunately, this turns off KMS and my current maximum resolution on the laptop screen is fixed to 1024x768 instead of its real capability. When not setting any of the above boot flags and I plug in an external monitor, the external monitor works fine. When booting with the flags, the external monitor works fine too, but can only do 1024x768 and can't do anything else than mirroring the laptop display. I did upgrade the i915 drivers from 2.17 that ship with Precise to 2.19 which are the most recent ones but without luck of getting anything to display.     I have found that using desktop effects in Ubuntu versions later than 8.10 causes the desktop to freeze after a few seconds on my PC. the command lspci -nn gave the following 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02) and with lspci -k I have 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02) Kernel driver in use: i915 Kernel modules: i915 The intel graphics cards seems to have some performence issues with xorg driver. However I have not noticed any freeze in Ubuntu 8.10. There are some workarounds at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes to make them work. But I can't find out what workaround should I do with my graphics controller. I have tried workaround F but it did not help. can anyone help me find a workaround for my graphics card? and is it actually possible to use desktop effect in this graphics card ?

  • Control external monitor brightness

    Hello Ubuntu community, I can control the brightness of my DELL U2713HM connected with DisplayPort via the command: ddccontrol -p -r 0x10 -w 53 where in this example the number 53 represents the brightness level (range 0 to 100). But I don't know how to link the command to my brightness keys on my keyboard. I searched already, but just found answers to integrated laptop screens. In /sys/class/backlight is the folder acpi_video0 with some subfolders and files. The file actual_brightness contains a number from 0 to 20, which is changing when I press the brightness keys. How do I get my external monitor listed as a device in /sys/class/backlight ? PS: I am running a fresh Ubuntu 12.10 install with integrated graphics Intel HD4000.

  • xrandr shows VGA1 as disconnected

    I have a Thinkpad W520 with Nvidia Optimus graphics. I have disabled the Nvidia card in BIOS (by selecting "integrated graphics"), so I'm running only on the integrated Intel graphics. I get full 3D acceleration, which would suggest the drivers are properly installed. However, I'm not able to use an external monitor. With the external monitor connected and turned on, running xrandr always gives: $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192 LVDS1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 344mm x 193mm 1920x1080 60.0*+ 59.9 50.0 1680x1050 60.0 59.9 1600x1024 60.2 1400x1050 60.0 1280x1024 60.0 1440x900 59.9 1280x960 60.0 1360x768 59.8 60.0 1152x864 60.0 1024x768 60.0 800x600 60.3 56.2 640x480 59.9 VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) What gives? It sees the VGA1 port (to which the external display is connected), but it appears disconnected. I have tried forcing a resolution as per these instructions, but when I do that X becomes unresponsive and I have to Ctrl-Alt-F1 and restart it.

    I'm looking for a forum that meets these requirements: Login using Facebook/Twitter/OpenID etc. User profiles with reward system Voting/thumbs up function Categories and tags for sorting threads Custom category pages with moderated static header Embeddable threads and categories (For example, a whole category or single thread can be integrated into wordpress) API to users, discussions etc. I've looked at forums like Vanilla, Disqus, OSQA etc, but none seem to match the above "hybrid criteria". Hosted or self-hosted doesn't matter but I'm really looking for something that can be integrated into an existing CMS to replace comments while at the same time have curated category pages and user profiles.   • Are Intel HD 4000 graphics supported on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS?

    I have an intel Core i7-3700 system with Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics with a dual monitor setup (1 connected via VGA, the other via DVI) on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit. I'm trying to get my monitors correctly detected. Right now, in only 1 unknown monitor is detected with a max resolution of 1280x1024, which is lower than my main monitor connected to DVI. Also, the desktop is mirrored rather than extended. I've previously managed to get a Core i5-2400 system with Intel HD 3000 integrated graphics with the same dual monitor setup and Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit to work using the glasen ppa drivers, but this time, after installing them following the instructions How do I install the Intel HD 3000 video driver? but it doesn't seem to work. Does the Intel HD 4000 require a different driver from the 3000? If so, where can I get it?

    I have recently installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my system. But the usb port does not seem to be working.   • What is the Oracle Utilities Application Framework?

    The Oracle Utilities Application Framework is a reusable, scalable and flexible java based framework which allows other products to be built, configured and implemented in a standard way. Note: Even though the Framework is built in java it can be integrated with COBOL based extensions for backward compatibility. When Oracle Utilities Customer Care & Billing was migrated from V1 to V2, it was decided that the technical aspects of that product be separated to allow for reuse and independence from technical issues. The idea was that all the technical aspects would be concentrated in this separate product (i.e. a framework) and allow all products using the framework to concentrate on delivering superior functionality. The product was named the Oracle Utilities Application Framework (oufw is the product code). The technical components are contained in the Oracle Utilities Application Framework which can be summarized as follows: Metadata - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework is responsible for defining and using the metadata to define the runtime behavior of the product. All the metadata definition and management is contained within the Oracle Utilities Application Framework. UI Management - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework is responsible for defining and rendering the pages and responsible for ensuring the pages are in the appropriate format for the locale. Integration - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework is responsible for providing the integration points to the architecture. Refer to the Oracle Utilities Application Framework Integration Overview for more details Tools - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework provides a common set of facilities and tools that can be used across all products. Technology - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework is responsible for all technology standards compliance, platform support and integration. There are a number of products from the Tax and Utilities Global Business Unit as well as from the Financial Services Global Business Unit that are built upon the Oracle Utilities Application Framework. These products require the Oracle Utilities Application Framework to be installed first and then the product itself installed onto the framework to complete the installation process. There are a number of key benefits that the Oracle Utilities Application Framework provides to these products: Common facilities - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework provides a standard set of technical facilities that mean that products can concentrate in the unique aspects of their markets rather than making technical decisions. Common methods of configuration - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework standardizes the technical configuration process for a product. Customers can effectively reuse the configuration process across products. Multi-lingual and Multi-platform - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework allows the products to be offered in more markets and across multiple platforms for maximized flexibility. Common methods of implementation - The Oracle Utilities Application Framework standardizes the technical aspects of a product implementation. Customers can effectively reuse the technical implementation process across products. Quicker adoption of new technologies - As new technologies and standards are identified as being important for the product line, they can be integrated centrally benefiting multiple products. When the capacity of a web service is reached and it continues to accept connections, it will most likely start to deteriorate. Fortunately there are 2 techniques, with Oracle Service Bus, that you can apply for protecting this from happening. You can either limit the concurrent number of requests for a Business Service (outbound requests) or you can limit the number of threads processing the requests for a Proxy Service (inbound requests). Limiting the Concurrent Number of Requests Limiting the concurrent requests for a Business Service cannot be set at design time so you have to use the built-in Oracle Service Bus Administration Console to do it (/sbconsole). Follow these steps to enable it: In Change Center, click Create to start a new Session Select Project Explorer, and navigate to the Business Service you want to limit Select the Operational Settings tab of the View a Business Service page In this tab, under Throttling, select the Enable check box. By enabling throttling you Specify a value for Maximum Concurrency Specify a positive integer value for Throttling Queue to backlog messages that has exceeded the message concurrency limit Specify the maximum time in milliseconds for Message Expiration a message can spend in Throttling Queue Click Update Click Active in Change Center to active the new settings If you re-publish the service, it will not overwrite the settings. Only if the resource is renamed or moved, it will. Please note that a throttling queue is an in-memory queue. Messages that are placed in this queue are not recoverable when a server fails or when you restart a server. Limiting the Number of Threads A better approach, in my opinion, is to limit the number of threads that can work with request. Follow these steps to do it: Open the WebLogic Server Console (/console) In Change Center, click Create to start a new Session In the left pane expand Environment and select Work Managers In the Global Work Managers page, click New    Click the Work Manager radio button, then click Next Enter a Name for the new Work Manager, and click Next In the Available Targets list, select server instances or clusters on which you will deploy applications that reference the Work Manager Click Finish. The new Work Manager now appears in the Global Work Managers page. Select the new Work Manager Right next to the Maximum Threads Constraint drop-down box, click New   Click the Maximum Threads Constraint radio button, then click Next Enter a Name and a thread Count to be the maximum size to allocate for requests. Click Next  In the Available Targets list, select server instances or clusters on which you will deploy applications that reference the Work Manager Click Finish Click Save Click Active in Change Center to active your changes.  A restart may be necessary.   Puh! Almost there. Start a new session. Go to the Service Bus Console (/sbconsole) and find your consuming Proxy Service. Click the Edit button of the Transport Configuration tab. Click Next Set the Dispatch Policy to the new Work Manager Click Last Click Save Click Active in Change Center to active your changes.
