  This question's been bugging me for a long time. I've always wondered how game developers were solving certain problems or situations that are quite common in certain genres. For example, how would one implement the quests of a typical role-playing game (e.g. BG or TES)? Or how would you implement weapons with multiple stacking effects in a first-person shooter (e.g. the Shrink-gun or Freezer from DN3D)? How would you implement multiple choice options with a possibly intricate decision tree leading to several different outcomes (e.g. the mission trees in WC)? Are there any examples or other resources for that? Blogs? Books? Sourcecode?

• How to use SMS content provider? Where are the docs?

  Hi, I'd like to be able to read the system's SMS content provider. Basically I wanted to make an SMS messaging app, but it would only be useful if I could see past threads etc. It seems like there's a content provider for this, but I can't find documentation for it - anyone know where that is? • sql Database to save different contact details for a message sending site

  I am working for a project to create a database for saving different persons contact details in sql. For example, X person saves 10 contacts, Y persons save 15 contacts, z persons save 20 contacts and so on. I cant create seperate tables to save contacts of x,y,z and so on. But i just want to know the alternative method to do that. Is there any easy method to save different cotacts and is there any easy method to retrieve it. I'm just a student, i don't know much about sql and don't have much experience in this. So i need your help to know much about this.

• ASP.NET 4.0 webforms routing

  I have an existing site that I'd like to convert to use routing, and after reading Scott Guthrie's post here, I built a working sample that works for most circumstances. However, since not all of the pages on the existing site match a particular pattern, I'll need to check against a database to determine which route (destination .aspx page) to use. For example, most pages are like this: http://www.mysite.com/people/person.html This is fine - I can easily route these to the view_person.aspx page because of the 'people' directory. But some pages are like this: http://www.mysite.com/category_page.html http://www.mysite.com/product_page.html This necessitates checking the database to see whether to route to the view_category.aspx page or the view_product.aspx page. And this is where I'm stuck. Do I create an IRouteHandler that checks the database and returns the route? Or is there a better way? The only code I've found that kind of fits is the answer to this question. Thanks in advance.

• Catching the Facebook Login Event to change the HTML of the parent page

  I am trying to create Facebook based login using Javascript. Once a person clicks a button he should get a div replaced by another div, if he is logged in to Facebook. However, if he is not logged in to Facebook he is asked his Facebook credentials and he logs in. However, we need the user to click the button once more for the div replacement to happen in this case. I want to know if there is a way in which I can catch the Facebook login event and change the div? Is polling a way or there is some other way out. I want to use only Javascript.

• Making a textfile into a list in matlab?

  I have a textfile and would like to import it onto Matlab and make it a list Person1 name = steven grade = 11 age= 17 Person2 name = mike grade = 9 age= 15 Person3 name = taylor grade = 11 age= 17 There are a few hundred entries like these above. Each are seperated by a blank line I was thinking I could scan the text and make the information between each blank line into an item in the list. I also would like to be able to look up each person by name once I have a list like the one below. I want something like x = [Person1 Person2 Person3 name = steven name = mike name = taylor grade = 11 grade = 9 grade = 11 age = 17 age = 15 age = 17] This seems very straight forward but I have been having trouble with this so far, I may be overlooking something. anyone have any ideas or advice?

  Hello, I have few tables like example. Users Books UsersBookPurchase UID BookId UserId UName Name BookId Password Price Email This is fine. I am having my own login system but i am also using some 3rd party to validate like OpenID or facebook Authetication. My question is if the user is able to log in successfully using OpenID or facebook Authentication, what steps do i need to do i.e do i have to insert one fake row in Users table because if i do not insert how will integrity be maintained. I mean what user id should i insert in UsersBookPurchase when the person who has logged in using Facebook Authentication has made a purchase because the UserId is reference key from Users table. Please give me a high level overview of what i need to do because this is fairly common scenario. Thanks in advance :)

• Modelling multiple simultaneous states

  How can you go about modelling an object that can have multiple simultaneous states? For example, you could have a person that's waiting for a bus. That's one state. But they could also be reading a newspaper while waiting for the bus. Furthermore, they could be thinking about something while reading the newspaper. They could also be sniffing their nose because they have a cold. That's a four states in all taking place at the same time. Obviously using booleans would be tedious and unflexible. Also, a conventional state pattern would mean that states are exclusive and can't be simultaneous in nature. The only thing I can think of is a State pattern combined with a Composite. Would this do or is there a way of taking things further?

  I inherited a mysql database that has a table with columns like this: object_id, property, value It holds data like this: 1,first_name,Jane 1,last_name,Doe 1,age,10 1,color,red 2,first_name,Mike 2,last_name,Smith 2,age,20 2,color,blue 3,first_name,John 3,last_name,Doe 3,age,20 3,color,red ... Basically what I want to do is treat this table as a regular table. How would I get the id numbers (or all properties) of a person who is age 20 sorted by last and than first name? So far I have: SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'age' AND value = '20' union SELECT object_id FROM table WHERE property = 'color' AND value = 'red' But I'm not sure how to go about ordering the data.   Hey I have a form where the person enters the subdomain like value.google.com and the entry would be "valid" I want to run a regex check (I am absolutely horrible at regex) that does the following: First Character: Cannot be symbol Middle Characters: a-z, A-Z, and symbols - and . • Use of LOC to determine project size

  How many lines of code (LOC) does it take to be considered a large project? How about for just one person writing it? I know this metric is questionable, but there is a significant difference, for a single developer, between 1k and 10k LOC. I typically use space for readability, especially for SQL statements, and I try to reduce the amount of LOC for maintenance purpose to follow as many best practice as i can. For example, I created a unified diff of the code I modified today, and it was over 1k LOC (including comments and blank lines). Is "modified LOC" a better metric? I have ~2k LOC, so it's surprising I modified 1k. I guess rewriting counts as both a deletion and addition which doubles the stats.

"who has been checking in the most code recently?" "Of the final product, how much of it was written by Person X?" "Which coder is best at adhering to the coding conventions?" Is there any plugin available to do this? (If not, I would be interested in developing one myself. Any ideas on where to get started on that?) We're using Visual Studio 2008 with the AnkhSVN plugin.

  Hi Everyone, I have a kase model which I am using a simple search form in. The problem I am having is some kases are linked to companies through a company model, and people through a people model.   I have two tables: RatingsTable that contains a ratingname and a bit whether it is a positive or negative rating: Good 1 Bad 0 Fun 1 Boring 0 FeedbackTable that contains feedback on things...the person rating, the rating and the thing rated. The feedback can be determined if it's a positive or negative rating based on RatingsTable. Jim Chicken Good Jim Steak Bad Ted Waterskiing Fun Ted Hiking Fun Nancy Hiking Boring I am trying to write an efficient MySQL query for the following: On a page, I want to display the the top 'things' that have the highest proportional positive ratings. I want to be sure that the items from the feedback table are unique...meaning, that if Jim has rated Chicken Good 20 times...it should only be counted once. At some point I will want to require a minimum number of ratings (at least 10) to be counted for this page as well. I'll want to to do the same for highest proportional negative ratings, but I am sure I can tweak the one for positive accordingly.

I have managed to create a flash object which plays well without FancyBox, however I want a person to click on the gallery and then an swobject is created which will then be show on a fancybox. • Dealing with a badly formatted CSV file

  I have an exceptionally bad CSV file. Although I "solved" the problem in the end by manually writing scripts to process and reprocess this specific file I wanted to know if there were any other solutions out there. You have a CSV file that has all the fields terminated by | (pipe) characters. Running a quick check shows you that there are 53 fields in the file. The person who gave you the file claims there there are only 28 fields. Not all of the fields have information in them. For example there are five custom_field_{num} fields which may or may not have data. How would you get this into a database nicely? The ideal solution (and one I searched high and low for) would be to just throw it all into a table with no column names or specifications. Then remove any columns that were completely blank and then give them titles and specifications.

• Generating Running Sum of Ratings in SQL

  I have a rating table. It boils down to: rating_value created +2 april 3rd -5 april 20th So, every time someone gets rated, I track that rating event in the database. I want to generate a rating history/time graph where the rating is the sum of all ratings up to that point in time on a graph. I.E. A person's rating on April 5th might be select sum(rating_value) from ratings where created <= april 5th The only problem with this approach is I have to run this day by day across the interval I'm interested in. Is there some trick to generating a running total using this sort of data? Otherwise, I'm thinking the best approach is to create a denormalized "rating history" table alongside the individual ratings.

• How to merge/crosslink Javadoc?

  If you have the standard Javadoc for a few different projects, how can you process them to create a single unified set of documentation in which everything is cross-linked? Ideally, the result would be similar to the documentation for the various modules in the NetBeans Platform: http://bits.netbeans.org/dev/javadoc/index.html but I've looked at their build scripts and they're predicated on you building everything from source. I'm looking for something which could also handle linking in Javadoc for third-party libraries, so I'd imagine it would need to be a post-processing operation. I can't be the first person to ever want this. Any ideas?
