• Ati X1600 driver problem on Mac

  Hi all, I currently own a 06' Macbook pro 1.1, and since some months I have recurrent problems of displays bug or artifacts. I searched quickly around to see that a lot of other users on Mac (iMac or Macbook pro) also have the same problem due to a problem for the X1600 video card. Apparently it's due to overheating problem, in my case even without warming a lot I have very bad display bugs such as colorful pixel lines, or glitches, and freeze and crash, all of this on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. I found this interesting article here talking about this problem and trying to gather people so that Apple take the serious GPU problem in consideration. In one of the comments, an user said he removed all bundle named with "radeon" and then he had no more problems under Leopard, and seems ot work fine well too on Snow Leopard. I did the same thing, I removed the bundles of the driver, restart, and no more problems, but not more 3D acceleration, which is not an acceptable solution. For those interested, here is the list of files to be deleted to stop having this problem. /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000.kext /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000GA.plugin /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000GLDriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX1000VADriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000.kext /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000GA.plugin /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver.bundle /System/Library/Extensions/ATIRadeonX2000VADriver.bundle I would like to know if there is a way to fix this using other drivers if that's possible or by creating a group to force Apple to make a replacement program in place. • Using Graphics2D to overlay text on a BufferedImage and return a BufferedImage

  I have checked similarly named questions, but they don't answer this use case. Basically, I was to overlay some text (text) at a given coordinate (x,y) I have the below function in a package; protected BufferedImage Process2(BufferedImage image){ Graphics2D gO = image.createGraphics(); gO.setColor(Color.red); gO.setFont(new Font( "SansSerif", Font.BOLD, 12 )); gO.drawString(this.text, this.x, this.y); System.err.println(this.text+this.x+this.y); return image; } I feel like im missing something patently obvious; every reference to Graphics2D I can find is dealing with either games or writing directly to a file but I just want a BufferedImage returned. with the overlay 'rendered' In the current code, the image appears out the end unchanged. • How to store the path of a game pawn in a turn based game ?

  Hello, I have a square grid, for a turn based game ( grid is similar to the chess board ), but the moves in the games are different based on whether you have lapped your opponent pawn at least once or not. i.e if you have not lapped (beaten any of the opponents pawns) in the outer most grid as below if you have lapped your opponent pawn once at least, then you get to reach home,this way.Any player having all his pawns reaching "home" first wins. The ones in yellow are safe-houses, i.e both the opponent pawn and the player's pawn get to stay in the same grid, this is not considered to be lapping ( the opponent ).The lapped pawn will return to its start point. Now the question is, what is the effective way to store the paths for the all the pawns.we will have 4 pawns for the player and 4 opponent pawns. Is there any pattern to store such static information, in a elegant way ? Thanks for your time

• Laptops with easy heat sink service?

  Can you recommend a current laptop model with easy heat sink access – or better yet, a removable air intake filter – making it easy to periodically clean out the dust and lint that always packs up in these things? Every laptop I've owned has eventually overheated on account of a clogged heat sink. (I suppose it doesn't help that I have a cat who loves to hang out where I'm working, or that my laptop is almost always running.) One of the things I really love about my current system, a Dell Inspiron 1420n, is how easy it is to service its cooling system: whenever I notice the fan starting to work harder and the CPU temperature climbing higher than it should be, I merely have to unscrew a single panel from the bottom of the machine, clean out the heat sink, and then I'm good for another few months. Which current models of the "business laptop" variety offer similar easy cooling system service? I'm looking for something roughly along the lines of: 14- or 15-inch display Nehalem-based CPU Solid construction – magnesium chassis or better (like the Inspiron) TPM (for BitLocker) ideal, but not mandatory Docking adapter ideal, but not mandatory Good battery life For example, the ThinkPad T410 would have been my top choice, but it seems like it would be a serious chore to service its heat sink. For the current MacBook Pros it looks downright impossible. No matter how nice the laptop is in other respects, it'll be of no use to me when it's overheating. So, any suggestions? Thanks in advance... (I'm constantly surprised that customers and manufacturers don't pay more attention to this feature, at least in the business laptop subcategory. In the last couple months I've fixed two friends' laptops which were also overheating due to clogged cooling systems; clearly I'm not the only one affected by this.)

• Migrating to Amazon AWS etc: What key statistics/questions should be analyzed and asked?

  I searched SOverflow pretty extensively for something similar to this set of questions. BACKGROUND: We are a growing 'big(ish)' data chemical data company that are outgrowing our lab and our dedicated production workhorses. Make no mistake, we need to do some serious query optimization. Our data (It comes from a certain govt. agency so the schema and lack of indexing is atrocious). So yes, I know, AWS or EC2 is not a silver bullet in the face of spending time to maybe rework your queries/code entirely 'out of the box'. With that said I would appreciate any input on the following questions: We produce on CentOS and lab on Ubuntu LTS which I prefer especially with their growing cloud / AWS integration. If we are mysql centric, and our biggest problem is these big cartesian products that produce slow queries, should we roll out what we know after more optimization with respect to Ubuntu/mySQL with the added Amazon horsepower? Or is there some merit to the NoSQL and other technologies they offer? What are the key metrics I need to gather from apache and mysql other than like: Disk I/O operations, Data up/down avgs and trends and special high usage periods/scenarios? I've reviewed AWS/EC2 fine print, but want 2nd opinions. What other services aside from the basic web/database have proven valuable to you? I know nothing of Hadoop or many other technologies they offer, echoing my prev. question, do you sometimes find it worth it (Initially having it be a gamble aside from basic homework) to dive/break into a whole new environment and try to/or end up finding a way of more efficiently producing your data/site product? Anything I should watch out for in projecting costs, or any other general advice when working with AWS folks from anyone else where your company is very niche and very very technical (Scientifically - or anybody for that matter)? • Squid, authentication, Outlook Anywhere, Windows 7 and HTTP 1.1 = NIGHTMARE

  I'm running a Squid proxy (latest version, 3.1.4) on Linux CentOS 5.4 with Samba 3.5.4, in order to allow authenticated web access for domain users; everything works fine, and even Windows 7 clients are fully supported. Authentication is transparent for domain users, while it is explicitly requested for non-domain ones, and it works if the user can provide valid domain credentials. All nice and good. Then, Outlook Anywhere kicks in and pain and suffering ensue. When Outlook (be it 2007 or 2010, it doesn't matter) runs on Windows XP clients, it connects gracefully through the Squid proxy to its remote Exchange server. When it runs on Windows 7, it doesn't. If the authentication requirement is lifted from the proxy, everything works on Windows 7 too, so the problem is obviously related to NTLM authentication with Squid. Digging more deeply (WireShark), I discovered Outlook Anywhere uses HTTP 1.1 when it runs on Windows 7, while it uses HTTP 1.0 when on Windows XP. And it looks like Squid, even in its latest incarnation, still has some serious troubles handling HTTP 1.1 properly, particularly when SSL and proxy authentication are thrown in the mix. While waiting for Squid to fully and officially support HTTP 1.1 (and it looks like this could take quite a long time), I'm looking for one of the following solutions: Make Squid handle this correctly, if it is at all possible. Identify Outlook Anywhere connections and have Squid not require authentication for them. But it isn't easy: again, the behaviour of Outlook differs when running on Windows XP and Windows 7, and while on Windows XP Outlook sends a really nice user-agent string of "MSRPC", on Windows 7 it doesn't send any (why? WHY?!?). Force Outlook Anywhere to use HTTP 1.0 even when running on Windows 7. And no, this is not as simple as deselecting "use HTTP 1.1" in Internet Explorer, looks like Outlook ignores that setting and chooses on its own which protocol to use. Any other feasible solution which doesn't involve whitelisting specific destination Exchange servers, which is the last-resort solution I'm trying to avoid.

• Apache+PHP on Windows Server 2008

  I've installed Apache/2.2 and PHP/5.3 lots of times under Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003. The official *.msi installers work fine and configure everything. Now I need to install them into a Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard 64-bit box and I'm facing nothing but problems: There are no official 64 bit binaries for Apache and no binaries at all for PHP (official or third-party). It's alright, I'll do with good 32 bits, but it's kind of surprising. Official documentation is vague, generic and completely unaware of UAC or any recent Windows security feature. The PHP installer is unable to configure mod_php and the Apache installer is unable to configure... well, Apache. After three hours I've finally reached the point where I'm installing everything in the root folder and assigning full control access to all users in all files and directories and all I've got is a PHP-less Apache server that's able to serve static pages. So I guess it's time to stop and think. My question is: Has anyone installed an Apache+PHP production server under Windows Server 2008 in a serious, secure and reliable way and documented the whole process? Or should I just find a bundle like XAMPP and the like that requires no installation? === EDIT === I've installed Xampp Lite 1.7.3 and everything was working in 5 minutes. I'd still like to find some documentation about installing the original packages: XAMPP installs tons of stuff I don't need and offers no tool to enable and disable PHP extensions.

• Dell PE2950 - slow IO rates for writing and reading locally

  I'm having a serious issue with dell server PE2950. The server has really slow IO rates, so slow that I'm not able to use it anymore I tried few things to solve this: changing disks to new disks (configured them as raid1) changing perc card + perc cables reinstalling the OS of course, had to cause of changing of disks, centos 5.5 x64bit firmware update to everything virtual disks policy: No Read Ahead,Write Back, disk cache policy disabled. openmanage doesn't alert about anything, also i ran dell's diag tests, everything passed, also dell didn't see anything in deset log. dell offered to reseat everything, including the cpu, we did that as well, still io rates are slow I have several PE2950 servers, and I never had such a thing with any of those. All have similar or exact hardware as this one, all configured the same, with the same os centos 5.5 x64, same disks, same raid, same policy. How can I prevent Rails from pluralizing the columns? • Why do I get this message from chrome when navigating to https://www.amazon.com?

  This is probably not the site you are looking for! You attempted to reach www.amazon.com, but instead you actually reached a server identifying itself as *.voxcdn.com. This may be caused by a misconfiguration on the server or by something more serious. An attacker on your network could be trying to get you to visit a fake (and potentially harmful) version of www.amazon.com. Intermittently, I get a blank page when going to http://www.amazon.com. So I stuck an 's' in the URL, making it https://www.amazon.com and got that message above (with the nice red screen) from Chrome indicating there might be some monkey business going on. After hammering on the URL a bunch of times and pulling it up in Chrome's developer tool to look at the network traffic on it, the url (without the s) started behaving. The url with the s just hangs, but the red screen no longer comes up. Some specs... I've got a macBook Pro, Snow Leopard, Time Warner cable. I've had enough strange stuff happening over the past couple months (google.com, youtube.com, amazon.com not coming up or loading strange error messages with random reference numbers) that I finally decided to switch to OpenDNS. Still having problems, though.

• Easy solution to monitoring & blocking connections to non-malicious services, IP's, and tracking companies

  Our family lives in the middle of nowhere, so the only high-speed internet available is Verizon's 3G mobile broadband. We have the highest package available, yet continually go over the 10GB limit and get charged $10 every 1GB we go over. We run a business from home, so stopping when we hit the limit is not an option. I've found the majority of connections are to Google, Microsoft, Akamai, Facebook, and other web service companies (mainly google). I know these are harmless connections, but when it costs money for them to monitor our web activity it becomes a serious problem. Here's some things I've done, but I'm sure there's something else that could help before blocking a huge set of IP ranges: stopped using windows (on my machine) use MVPS host file on all computers use firefox on all computers (with don't track me option) ad block plugin on all browsers blocking google updates blocking windows updates block images in browsers (when possible) use comodo (paranoia-level style of blocking..) virus-free computers with ESET NOD32 bought router and installed dd-wrt in attempt to block connections more diligently (and throttle bandwidth if it comes to that) Anything I'm missing? I know Google analytics is on almost all websites, as well as FB like buttons but I would like to be able to stop these connections without blocking use of google services like gmail, etc. Any ideas?

• How do I determine the cause of a sustained spike in mysql queries/activity?

  So this is more of a "I'm trying to learn about how this works" question rather than "there is a serious problem I can't figure out!" question. I'm setting up a VPS and have been tweaking and changing things here and there. I recently installed munin (like two days ago) and yesterday I noticed a significant increase in mysql activity. So now my curiosity is going crazy. How do I setup/access mysql's query log? I have about 5 databases on the server so I want to see which one is getting all the action. Is there anything else I can do to keep a better eye on what's going on? Here are the graphs. As you can tell, it's not that much activity at all but I'm just curious at the change. The sites that are on the server right now do not get a lot of traffic. It's running a couple drupal sites, only one of which is live. The live one hasn't had a spike in traffic and the last spike was 250 visitors so it's barely a spike at all.

• Networking DOS within Windows 7 XP Mode, with a Windows XP/7 Networked Share

  For awhile now, one of my clients has been stuck with Corel Paradox 4.0 (it used to be the biggest database system in the DOS days, until Microsoft released Access in the early 90's) so for awhile I've managed to keep it on life support on Windows XP for a few years, however since switching to Windows 7 x64, I've had to resort to using XP Mode as the sandbox to keep it up and running. While I am able to run Paradox as usual in XP Mode, I'm having a serious issue where if I try connecting the install to the network share (which is located on the Windows 7 portion of the system), Paradox keeps exiting because it says the serial number is invalid. Now, I know for a fact that this is an issue with the virtual loopback adapter and also having the VM linked to the physical ethernet adapter -- and while I have solved this issue before, most of my fixes have been bandages since after a few weeks the issue pops up again. Long story short, I wanted to ask if there is a permanent way to link a DOS program to a network share address. For example, when I try doing \tsclient\paradox (the Windows 7 Address) I keep getting an error saying I need a valid network address. I've tried mapping that folder to various drive letters such as P:\Paradox -- but for some reason that keeps failing over time. For what it's worth, Paradox uses a .SOM file to store the network settings, however it isn't editable in Notepad but rather it's controlled by a wizard in Paradox. But if that extension rings any bells, I'd welcome any insights.

  i have this enormous array that i am pulling from an API for BattleField Bad Company 2, and the soldier stats can be pulled as a multi dimensional array with an inner array for each soldier, however the API sormats it sorting the soldiers by name alphabetically, i want to sort them by rank (which is just another key within that soldiers array). ive been trying to figure this out for days, anyone have any ideas?   im designing a collection of video games for the command line (such as deal or no deal, tic tac toe, racing, maze puzzle, connect four, wack a mole, etc.) however it would really make things easier for me if i could make it so that when the user makes a selection (such as what direction to move in the game) , that as soon as they press the arrow keys then it carries out the IF statements that follow. • Paypal adaptive payment API call with C# .NET? Preferably with WebServices

  Okay I might be entirely off track now but here goes: Our "webshop" offers two functions, buying a specific product and selling it back to us. Back-end handles if the user can sell or not. I've decided to use Paypal's adaptive payments for this one as it seems the way to go doing these kinds of transactions. I've never implemented any kind of shop so I'm totally green with this one. I only recently learned ASP.NET and have mainly developed games before moving to this kind of development. HTTP is still some level of magic to me hehe.. I might be confused but I think paypal offers a webservice with their adaptive payment API. My humble request: A nice soul who wants to share an example of implementing an adaptive payment API call with C# .NET. • Learning Visual C++ 2008 and C++ at the same time? Any resources to recommend?

  Hey guys, I am trying to learn Visual C++ 2008 and C++ at the same time to get involved with sourcemod, a server side modding tool for valve games. However I have never touched Visual C++ or C++ in general, and doing some preliminary research I am quite confused on these different versions of C++ (mfc, cli, win32), and why a lot of people seem to hate Visual C++ and use something like Borland instead. I really learn visually, and have used videos from places like Lynda.com with great success. I was wondering if anyone had any exceptional resources they had come across to teach Visual C++ 2k8, with its intricacies and setting up the IDE along with C++ at the same time. Books would be nice, but videos would be preferred, and I don't mind paying for resources. Thanks in advance!

Looking at the current 3d games, in some they create near to hundreds of characters, what lead me to think that there are some good 3d character/model creator. • Are primitive types garbage collected in Android?

  I know this may be a dumb question, but my background is more in c++ and managing my own memory. I am currently cutting down every single allocation that I can from one of my games to try and reduce the frequency of garbage collection and perceived "lag", so for every variable that I create that is an Object (String and Rect for example) I am making sure that I create it before hand in my constructor and not create temporary variables in simple 10 line functions... (I hope that makes sense) Anyways I was working though it some more tonight and I realized that I may be completely wrong about my assumption on garbage collection and primitive types (int, boolean, float) are these primitive type variables that I create in a 10 line function that gets called 20 times a second adding to my problem of garbage collection? So a year ago every few seconds I would see a message in logcat like GC freed 4010 objects / 484064 bytes in 101ms Now I see that message every 15-90 seconds or so... So to rephrase my question: Are primitive types (int, float, boolean, etc) included when seeing this message?

• How to make a secure game in javascript ?

  Hello, I'm working on games using javascript some html and css, and I was wondering if there was any way to secure the game so that the user can't just call game.php?result=victory to finish the game and earn some point. As of right now here are the solution I have. For a chance game, start the page with the result already in place, win or loose, then just do some animations to show it, but all the score and win/loose stuff is done server-side. For a battle game, just get the action from the javascript call, and do the damage calculation, reaction of the oponent on the server and just send back the data. but the last solution imply that I will have to send actions each time the user do anything. This might work for a turn by turn battle game, but I think it would be to slow for any other kind of game. So my question is, is there some kind of secure way I can prep my javascript to secure the infomation sent.
