• Java Formatter specify starting position for text

  I'm trying to position a string at a certain starting position on a line, regardless of where the previous text ended. For instance: Mandatory arguments to long options are mandatory for short options too. -a, --all do not ignore entries starting with . -A, --almost-all do not list implied . and .. The explanation of the options begin at position 30 regardless of the text preceding. How do you accomplish this with java.util.Formatter? I have tested with both the width (%30s) and precision (%.30) arguments, and neither provide the desired result.

• Attaching files to WCF REST service responses

  I have a resource that looks something like this: /users/{id}/summary?format={format} When format is "xml" or "json" I respond with a user summary object that gets automagically encoded by WCF - fine so far. But when format equals "pdf", I want my response to consist of a trivial HTTP response body and a PDF file attachment. How is this done? Hacking on WebOperationContext.Current.OutgoingResponse doesn't seem to work, and wouldn't be the right thing even if it did. Including the bits of the file in a CDATA section or something in the response isn't safe. Should I create a subclass of Message, then provide a custom IDispatchMessageFormatter that responds with it? I went a short distance down that path but ultimately found the documentation opaque. What's the right thing?

• [Three20] How to adjust width of TTStyledTextLabel ?

  Hi I am implementing an IM app on iOS. I found that three20 library has a TTStyledTextLabel which provides cool features like showing images and url links. However I want to embed the TTStyledTextLabel in a message bubble (just like the sms app shipped with iphone does), where I need the label to adjust its size according to the text length. I found that TTStyledTextLabel can adjust its height according to its width, but I don't know how to make it shrink horizontally when the text is very short and can't fill up a whole line. Any suggestions?

  I am using the gcc compiler. My project source tree looks like somewhat like this test$~: tree . . |-- folder | |-- hello.cpp | `-- hello.h `-- main.cpp 1 directory, 3 files test$~: The file main.cpp contains the main() function and all the functions invoked by main.cpp lie in the directory named folder So far in all my little projects I never had to put some source code under a sub-directory. What I am looking for, in short, is some gcc command for recursive compilation in sub-directories and their subdirectories and so on... This command should be invoked from the home directory of the code project.

  Unlike the other posts about the task "delete all tables", this question is specifically about using SqlCommand to access the database. A coworker is facing the problem that no matter how it attempts it, he can't delete all tables from a database via SqlCommand. He states that he can't perform such action as long as there is an active connection - the connection by the SqlCommand itself. I believe this should be possible and easy, but I don't have much of a clue about databases so I came here to ask. It would be awesome if you could provide a short code example in C# (or any .NET language, for that matter). If you require additional information, just leave a comment.

• network error 414 when using google translate with wordpress

  I am using a jQuery and google translate on a wordpress site. It works well unless I call a div that is repeated in the loop like in an archives page. On these pages I get a network error 414 that the request URI is too large. The archives page I have are short and the php is only generating about 5 paragraphs for each category archive. Does anyone know how I can correct this error? Is this a serverfault question?

  What is the worst real-world macros/pre-processor abuse you've ever come across (please no contrived IOCCC answers *haha*)? Please add a short snippet or story if it is really entertaining. The goal is to teach something instead of always telling people "never use macros". p.s.: I've used macros before... but usually I get rid of them eventually when I have a "real" solution (even if the real solution is inlined so it becomes similar to a macro). Bonus: Give an example where the macro was really was better than a not-macro solution. Related question: When are C++ macros beneficial?

• How to feed an xml database with tags obtained thru html forms ?

  Hello! Not a programmer, I begin with xml, html forms and xslt on Mac. I plan to use a form to post short texts in a xhtml page and invite end users to add some annotations to the said text. The users would select a specific part of the text posted and each annotation would stand for one specific chain of characters. My goal is to consolidate the tags obtained from various user's annotations to one xml "knowledge base" containing the original text with all the revision indicators. Then I plan to use xslt sheets to product various reports based on the tags obtained. my two questions are : 1- am I dreaming ? Is it really possible to do that with xml, xforms, xslt without using java, php, ajax or other seasoned programmer's tools ? 2- What should be my focus for further explorations aiming in that direction ?   On my website when the user selects the facebook like button they have the option to enter comments. This popup window to enter comments only contains the users avatar and place to enter comments. How can i include my pic and a brief description of the site directly below the comment??? At first I thought it was from the HTML title attribute or meta property="og:title" ... but populating these have no affect I have another site that contains both pic and a desc below the comment but the pic seems to be grabed at random -but always the same- from the site and the short desc I thought from the -title- attribute but its not - I changed the -title- and it still shows the same desc, its like its cached??? Any ideas how to control or populate a brief description and image within the comment section of a like button???

• How do you make Python wait so that you can read the output?

  I've always been a heavy user of Notepad2, as it is fast, feature-rich, and supports syntax highlighting. Recently I've been using it for Python. My problem: when I finish editing a certain Python source code, and try to launch it, the screen disappears before I can see the output pop up. Is there any way for me to make the results wait so that I can read it, short of using an input() or time-delay function? Otherwise I'd have to use IDLE, because of the output that stops for you to read. (My apologies if this question is a silly one, but I'm very new at Python and programming in general.)

  I wrote a short C++ program to do XOR encryption on a file, which I may use for some personal files (if it gets cracked it's no big deal - I'm just protecting against casual viewers). Basically, I take an ASCII password and repeatedly XOR the password with the data in the file. Now I'm curious, though: if someone wanted to crack this, how would they go about it? Would it take a long time? Does it depend on the length of the password (i.e., what's the big-O)?

• Why TortoiseHg not show the "merge conflict"?

  Short version of the question: Since I already have TortoiseHg, I right clicked on that file trying to see the merge conflict visually, but there is no way to see it? Details: To make a simple case of merge conflict, I hg init a repo on Win 7, and then clone it to another folder. Now, in one working directory, i added the line "the code is 123", committed. And in the other folder, i did an "hg pull" and "hg update" Now, I go back to the first folder, and change "123" to "123abc", and then do an "hg commit" And then I go to the other folder and edit "123" to "123xyz" over there, and do an "hg commit", and when "hg push", it says it can't. So I try to use any visual tool to see how the conflict is like, but ... TortoiseHg doesn't seem to have any option to do that?

  My impression of Python from the short time I've been developing with it is that it's incredible powerful and flexible, but I can't help but feel like "with great power comes great responsibility." So while I've read numerous blog posts about simple and elegant Python snippets that solve a problems, I wonder if there are design patterns or abuses of Python language features that, once built into an application or library, cause the code to be incredibly brittle and near impossible to refactor. So the question is basically what are the most frustrating, but somewhat common, Python "hacks" or language feature abuses that someone can introduce that will cause nightmares for future maintainers of that code?

  Hi, i'm a computer science student working on a Yahoo Messenger - like program implemented in Java. My problem is that whenever the JTextArea inside my frame contains new message updates, the user must be prompted even when his/her frame is minimized. Is there a workaround on how to make the JFrame on the taskbar blink when updates are received? In short, i badly need a way to notify the user that the frame has been updated even though it is minimized. Is that possible? Thanks for you help. ^_^

  I have about 7500 (short) text lines in a table cell. The table looses its background image on about 1800th line. Is there a limit about the table's length? Text in the cell stays visible till end, but without background.   I've seen many (code-golf) Perl programs out there and even if I can't read them (Don't know Perl) I wonder how you can manage to get such a small bit of code to do what would take 20 lines in some other programming language. What is the secret of Perl? Is there a special syntax that allows you to do complex tasks in few keystrokes? Is it the mix of regular expressions? I'd like to learn how to write powerful and yet short programs like the ones you know from the code-golf challenges here. What would be the best place to start out? I don't want to learn "clean" Perl - I want to write scripts even I don't understand anymore after a week. If there are other programming languages out there with which I can write even shorter code, please tell me.

• Java data structure to use with Hibernate to store unknown number of parameters?

  Following problem: I want to render a news stream of short messages based on localized texts. In various places of these messages I have to insert parameters to "customize" them. I guess you know what I mean ;) My question probably falls into the "Which is the best style to do it?" category: How would you store these parameters (they may be Strings and Numbers that need to be formatted according to Locale) in the database? I'm using Hibernate to do the ORM and I can think of the following solutions: build a combined String and save it as such (ugly and hard to maintain I think) do some kind of fancy normalization and and make every parameter a single row on the database (clean I guess, but a performance nightmare) Put the params into an Array, Map or other Java data structure and save it in binary format (probably causes a lot of overhead size-wise) I tend towards option #3 but I'm afraid that it might be to costly in terms of size in the database. What do you think?

• How to duplicate INSERTS into a seperate table?

  An iPhone application I have installed uses an SQLite database to log entries with basic INSERTS and DELETES being performed on it. However I wish to keep a permanent log of the INSERTS made to this table, so when an INSERT occurs, I want it to be written to another table also as to create a log. I don't have access to the application source code in order to modify the SQL statements made, I do have access to the SQLite database. Can I do this with triggers? If so can somebody provide a short example.
