• Is there a Windows 7 compatible IPSec VPN client that allows protocol and port specific rules?

  As the title says, I need to find a IPSec VPN client for Windows 7. On XP and Vista we've used SafeNet SoftRemote in which you can set up rules for specific protocols and ports. But SoftRemote isn't compatible with Windows 7. 172.xxx.xxx.1 TCP 1433 172.xxx.xxx.2 TCP 1433 172.xxx.xxx.10 ALL ... Since the VPN gateway is configured this way the client must mirror these settings. I've tried TheGreenBow, NCP Secure Entry, Cisco VPN Client and Shrew Soft VPN but none of these allows you to configure by protocol and port. Does anyone have any other suggestions? EDIT: Forgot to mention that agressive mode is also a requirement. --UPDATE-- I've got some news... I've managed to get SoftRemote to work on Windows 7 x64 through Windows XP Mode. After scouring all corners of the Internet for idéas I had enough information to construct a working solution. This solution will probably benefit other clients as well! You'll find a post here with detailed instructions of how I went about.

  I'm interested in building or buying a task-specific computer for my brother. His requirements are ridiculously simple: the machine has to be able to wait in hundreds of web-based virtual waiting rooms at once and not crash. To be competitive, he needs to be able to enter the waiting rooms an dauto-refresh them faster. My question is, what priority do I give the different specs? My initial surmise is this: Connection speed (nothing to do with my build, but I kind of think this will be more beneficial than anything I build for him) Memory size -- I don't usually see firefox taking up more than a gig, even when heavily tabbed, but I think one gig for the operating system and two gigs for the browser are necessary. Processor speed -- I think the processor will affect performance, but even something out of date will do what he needs Memory speed/RAM bus -- I doubt this will matter much, but it seems just on this side of irrelevant. Everything else is a non-issue for him. Does this seem to stack up correctly? Also, since he's looking to stay on the cheaper side, and I might end up recommending a refurb to him, is there anything particularly egregious that Vista would do if it came pre-installed? If I build it myself, I'll give him linux, but if I have it shipped to him, I'm not sure I could walk him through the install process for linux, but I probably could walk him through the process to upgrade to Windows 7, if it were somehow worth it.

• Not playing .mov files in WMP, not loading .mov files in Windows Live Movie Maker. What am I missing?

  My friend needs to create a video and she has some source files that are .MOV format. I assume they are h.264. She can view the files with QuickTime. She has a laptop running Vista, and a just-downloaded version of Windows Live Movie Maker (which I'll call LMM for short). LMM shows an 'X' icon when she tries to add one of these files to it. My machine runs Windows 7 Pro, and a slightly earlier build of LMM and has no problems editing video with these source files. I assume she's missing a codec but what can I tell her? I've looked at the answer that mentions a QuickTime DirectShow Source Filter Plugin. It mentions only playback through WMP, not editing via LMM, but is that what she needs? I didn't have to load anything like that. That project's now done (she punted and used iMovie on a Mac). But I did gain another clue. She could play a 720p .MOV file, but these were 1920x1080 files.

• Problem with Windows Service and network printers.

  I have a Windows Service application that every now and then should print some documents. As far as I know, to print those documents, my service must be run with a user account other than Local Service or Network Service. So i have created a user account and added that to the Administrators group and ran the service with it. With locally installed printers, I don't have any problems because those printers are automatically installed for all accounts. To be able to print with the network printers, I have created another application that syncs the installed printers of the currently logged in user with the user account that my service uses with the rundll32.exe printui.dll,PrintUIEntry command. In Vista and Windows7 I don't have any problems with the syncing of the printers because every time that a printer should be installed the authentication window will open and it asks for the appropriate user account to install that printer (The service user account is not created on the network printers computers) but in XP a find dialog with the "Connecting to {printername}" caption will appear and stops responding, or sometimes it installs the printer but every time service tries to print, a Win32Exception with "A StartDocPrinter call was not issued" message will throw and in the user account that runs the sync application a duplicate printer will be shown and I couldn't delete those printers unless with force (using registry). Am I doing the right thing for printing documents with Windows Services at all? If yes, how can I solve the above-mentioned problem? And if not, what the heck should I do? Thanks.

• Windows 7 restarts while being idle

  My Windows 7 almost always restarts when I keep it idle for ~20-30mins. It happened randomly before, but lately, if I leave the computer I can be sure it's gonna restart after those 30mins. It never happens when I play games or work tho, just when it's idle. It's a fresh install of Windows 7 64bit. I had also problems while installing it, it always crashed while finalizing the install and I had to reinstall again. Eventually it installed on 3rd or 4th try after I deleted all of my partitions and added them again. I thought it might have been a hardware problem, but temperatures seem to be okay and I have no idea how to track what might have been causing it. Any ideas? I'm running Windows 7 64bit on: Gigabyte EX58-UD4P Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 6GB of DDR3 1066Mhz RAM WDC WD1001FALS-00J7B0 1TB SATA II I have a very bad feeling it might be something with HDD and its compatibility with Windows 7 as I haven't had those problems for 1 year while I had Vista.

• What is the quickest reliable way to backup a NAS drive to a USB drive?

  How would you backup 600+ GB of data on a NAS (Network-Attached Storage) drive to a USB external drive? The NAS drive does not contain mission critical data nonetheless I wish to make weekly copies of it just in case. The NAS drive is almost exclusively used as an archive dump and is rarely updated. However the backup strategy used must have a simple restore procedure so I can confidently say the data now on the NAS drive is exactly how it was at the time of backup. I did try xcopy but seemed like it would take many-many hours and eventually crashed with insufficient memory. http://www.ctunion.com/node/114 suggests I would need to use xxcopy instead due to folder/file name lengths. My concern with xcopy/xxcopy is the length of time it takes. Hoping something else is faster. NAS drive is DLink DNS-313. 1TB drive installed. Connected to router via Ethernet cable. USB drive is Seagate 1TB. Can be connected to Windows Vista (preferred) or Windows 7 PCs. Both PCs are usually connected Wirelessly however ethernet cable can be used during backup to speed up the process.

  When creating a System DSN, I get the error: Connection failed: SQLState: '08001' SQL Server Error: 2 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2]. Connection failed: SQLState: 'HYT00' SQL Server Error: 0 [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0]Login timeout expired I'm running Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP2, and installed SQL Server 2008 Express Advanced without errors. I'll be using the database locally for an app installed on the same PC. I'm able to successfully connect with SQL Server Management Studio using Windows Authentication (my Windows account is a member of local Administrators), and I can successfully create a database with default ownership (defaults to my Windows account). SQL Server Configuration Manager shows that Shared Memory, TCP/IP, and Named Pipes are enabled for SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration, SQL Native Client 10.0 Configuration (32bit), and SQL Server Network Configuration (SQLEXPRESS). The SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) and SQL Server Reporting Services (SQLEXPRESS) services are running. When I create a system DSN, my driver choices are SQL server (sqlsrv32.dll 4-10-09), which gives a generic wizard, and SQL Server Native Client 10.0 (sqlncli10.dll 7-10-08), which gives the SQL Server 2008 wizard. I choose the latter. I enter name, description, and have tried both MyPCName and 127.0.0.1 for the server name (browsing turns up nothing). After clicking Next, I leave it at Integrated Windows authentication, and leave Connect to server for additional options checked. After clicking Next, I get the error above. • Some guest networking and VMware Tools functionality broken with Sprint SmartView on the host

  Using VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on Vista 64-bit. I started having problems with VMware networking about 6 months ago after upgrades to Sprint SmartView. I did not have problems previously, but I don't know if that is because I was lucky. The main symptoms of the problem when SmartView is installed are: I can no longer drag files from the host to copy them to the guest. When they are dragged, the disallowed cursor (the circle with a slash) shows in the guest. If I try to enable shared folders in the guest while it is running, I will not be able to see the shared files and will be informed that networking is not working. I can still ping guests from the host and I can still access network services via NAT most of the time when connected via my USB broadband adapter. When I configure shared folders so they are "always enabled" (with a mapped drive), I can access files on the via the mapped folders. I can also copy the file on the host and then paste it in the guest, as was suggested in some other threads concerning drag-and-drop problems that I found. The VMware Tools icon is showing in all cases and I don't see any obvious errors in the host's event viewer. If I uninstall SmartView, the problems disappear. If SmartView (current version is 2.28.0082) is reinstalled I will experience the same problems. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling VMware and SmartView in various ways but it appears tha these problems are consistent when SmartView is installed (not just when it is running or connected, but when it is present on the system). I'm wondering if this is a combination of software (WS 6.5.3, Vista64, and SmartView) that works for other people, which would indicate a problem that is peculiar to my configuration.

• Network problems with Ubuntu on VMware

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 inside VMware Player running under Windows Vista and I can't connect to the internet or the host computer from the Ubuntu. I have set all the VMware services to “manual” (like VMware DHCP Service), but starting them manually doesn't help. In VMware, the network seems to work (there is a green dot beside the network icon) and I have tried both Bridged and NAT settings. ifconfig doesn't show the eth1 interface, unless I give it as a parameter (or use -a). I think this means that Ubuntu thinks that the network isn't connected at all.   I have a bit slow PC here, so I decided to put Ubuntu 11.04 on it. It use to run Windows Vista on a resolution of 1280x1024, so both my hardware and monitor support it. Now I'm on Ubuntu, but can only run 1024x768, and the screen is not that bright. Its like when you don't have the right drivers on a Windows machine. Now i'm new to linux, so I do not know what do do. I have an onboard Intel chipset i965. • What are some techniques to monitor multiple instances of a piece of software?

  It was recommended that I ask this question here by a member of StackOverflow. I have a piece of self-serve kiosk software that will be running at multiple sites. I'd like to monitor their status remotely. The kiosk application itself is pretty much finished. I am now in the process of creating a piece of software that will monitor all of the kiosks from a central location so that the customer can view particular details remotely (for instance, how many bills are in the acceptor's cash cartridge, what customer is currently logged in, etc.). Because I am in such an early stage of development, my options are quite open. I understand that I'm not giving very many qualifications, but I'd like to try to get a good variety of potential solutions. Some details: Kiosk software is a VB6 app running on Windows Embedded Monitoring software will be run on a modern desktop version of Windows (either XP, Vista, or 7) Database is SQL Server 2008 My initial idea was to develop a .NET app that would simply report the last database transaction for each kiosk at a set interval (say every second or so) but I'd really like for the kiosk software to report its status in real-time. I'm not exactly sure where to begin in terms of what modifications may need to be made to the kiosk software, and what the monitoring software will require. • Server Manager from Windows 2008 to Hyper-V 2008 R2?

  My workstation is running Windows Server 2008. I do not have local admin privileges. I have a Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (i.e. Core+Hyper-V) box. On that box, I do have local admin privileges. I can Remote Desktop to the box; Hyper-V Manager works fine (outside of Server Manager). It's just that there are some things that are easier to do in Server Manager (partition disks, etc.) than at the command line. I'd like to use Server Manager on my workstation to manage the Hyper-V box. However: When I run Server Manager on my workstation, it prompts for elevation, and won't then let me connect to another server. If I attempt to run MMC and then add "Server Manager" as a Snap-in, it doesn't prompt me for the server name. Then it complains that I'm not an Administrator. It doesn't provide for connecting to another server. The Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) are for Windows Vista and Windows 7 RC. These don't install on Windows 2008.

• Is Gmail Being Blocked by my ISP (wait till you read this)?

  This is the strangest thing I have ever encountered. I have a desktop on which I cannot access Gmail and also youtube sign in (I believe since youtube is owned by google they both use the same sign in system). So okay, maybe my ISP is blocking these for some reason or maybe my firewall is, or maybe there is something wrong with my connectivity, right? NO. On other computers that uses the same connection via a wireless router I can access both gmail and youtube sign in just fine. On this computer which doesn't have a wireless card and so I have to connect via Ethernet cable (connected to a USB converter since the Ethernet port doesn't work anymore) I can access all sites and services including things like aol and hotmail. But only when it comes to gmail, do I get complete and utter throttling. I even turned off my AV ad Firewall momentarily and no luck. The gmail ages starts to load and by mid point it just stays there loading and loading and loading... never ends. I tried everything, I reset the modem and router multiple times. I reinstalled my operating system from a vista to a windows 7 hoping a complete reinstall would solve the issue, but no luck. So can anyone for the life of them figure out why this could be? And yes, I am going to call my ISP but not to solve this issue, but to cancel them. I want to upgrade to cabel from DSL anyway. I didn't mention my ISP because I'm not sure if that is within the rules (if it's okay some one let me know and I will). P.S. All this happened one day, before gmail was perfectly accessible in this computer. I can't remember anything special that happened on that day prior to this. The only thing I can think of is, my ISP or Google itself is blocking this computer based on it's mac address, but I don't know if that's even done. • Single computer on network cannot connect to internet.

  Hi All, I hope you can help me out! :) I have 3 computers and one device (Xbox) on my home network; 2 running XP and one on Vista. The computer that can't connect to the internet (XP) is old and failing, and shows no warning before it completely runs out of battery. Thus today, I started it up forgetting that I had unplugged it the night before, and it just ran out of battery entirely whilst I was using it and died. I think that before this I had been browsing the internet, but I can't remember for certain. (i.e. The problem I am having may or may not have been caused by this 'hard' power off). Anyway, now when I start the computer up it takes 5-10 minutes after logging on to display the start bar and icons. Also, I cannot browse the internet. The computer seems to connect to the network OK (I have tried both wired and wireless), but I can't visit sites and can't ping web addresses. Pinging the router fails, as does pinging another of my computers on the network. I have never encountered something like this before, and whilst I am no noob I am also not a sysadmin, haha. :( Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you for your time. P.S. I have tried a system restore (newbie move?).

• Windows Remote Desktop: "configuring remote session" closes without error

  I have a desktop/laptop pair at home operating x64 Windows 7 (the desktop was upgraded from Windows Vista, works just fine). I remote desktop to them on a daily basis when outside. In recent weeks, I would occasionally fail to connect to my desktop. It can connect and authenticate fine, but the "configuring remote session" dialog would simply close and not show me the desktop window or any error message. There is no error event log relating to this on the desktop computer. Some suggestions call for disabling remote audio, which mine already is, but trying different audio modes did not yield any different result. I am not too sure if this is related to video card drivers (they do get auto-updated), since remote desktop video is supposed to steer via a virtual device driver? Nonetheless the desktop operates three monitors via an ATI Radeon HD5770 (1 Displayport, 2 DVI). I do not see a real problem with that since I can mostly connect and operate it remotely. I try to "remote tunnel" via my home laptop but obviously won't work either as the problem lies in the desktop. What other conditions can cause remote desktop to break without error? UPDATE I came home and still couldn't connect to the desktop until I restarted the entire system.

• ISA 2000 and COD MW2 Steam

  OK, so maybe not the "proper use" of network resources, but we enjoy the odd COD game during lunch hours. When we played COD4, we had a dedicated server setup at the back of the server room. With MW2, we need to be able to connect to steam to be able to play multi-player. I went through and created the following rules in ISA 2000 (I'm stuck with 2000 for now). Protocol Definition: Steam Primary connection: Port 27000, UDP, Send Receive Secondary Connection: Port range 27001-27030 Send Receive Protocol Definition: Steam TCP In Primary connection: 27014, TCP, Inbound Secondary Connection: Port range: 27015-27050, Inbound Protocol Definition: Steam 4380 Primary connection: 4380, UDP, Send Receive When I start steam on my local workstation (I did add an exception to the Vista Firewall to allow steam), the steam client sits on "Updating Steam" for 5 minutes then errors out with: You must connect to the internet first.   Has anyone been successful with transferring audio cassette tape recordings to a digital format? I would like to preserve old cassette tape recordings of my grandparents to some digital format: MP3, WAV, etc... The quality of the tapes are mediocre. Below is a list of the hardware that I can work with: Cassette Deck: I have a Technics stereo cassette deck model RS-B12. It has separate left and right IN and OUT RCA type jacks on the back. On the computer side: -I have a Windows Vista PC with no additional software other than what came with the machine from Costco. No sound editing software that I can see. There is no sound card on the PC. On the front panel there is a mini-phono mic input jack and there are several different types of in/out mini-phono jacks on the back. In addition, USB and Firewire. I also have access to a new (2009) iMac with a mini-phono input jack for a powered mic or other audio source and GarageBand that has come with the computer. In addition, USB and Firewire. What are my options for getting these cassette recordings into a digital format? Whats the best format? What sort of wires would I need and will I want to utilize the USB or Firewire or can I simply use the audio inputs on the PC (or Mac) to receive the audio stream?

  What I have: Workstations running Ubuntu Jaunty mounting /home on a remote NFS server. User accounts are still created locally on each individual workstation. Workstations running Windows XP / Vista NFS server (as noted above) Windows 2008 server All machines share a single private network (LAN). What I need to accomplish: A single, intuitive (GUI driven) place for an office administrator to create user accounts. This should let anyone login to their (linux or windows) workstation, then fire up remote desktop and use the same login to the Windows 2008 server, from any machine on the network. I have read so much on samba, LDAP vs AD, etc and now I'm even more confused than I was before I began researching the problem. Ideally, Linux and Windows users should be able to get to their local files once logged into the Win2008 server. I am a programmer, not an interoperability guru and I'm completely lost on where to even start trying to accomplish this, plus I've run out of things to Google. How would you do this? Is it even possible?

  My Dell Studio XPS 13 has a brightness up & down buttons (Fn + up arrow / down arrow), as do most laptops have. It's running Windows 7 64bit and I've installed Windows Live Messenger (build 14 and something) on it. When I hit Fn + down arrow, to reduce screen brightness, the Messenger window pops up. That's true whether it has been running in background (system tray / minimized) before or not. Note, to make messenger hide itself to the system tray, I've set it to Vista Compatibility mode. I don't think that has anything to do with it though, since if I shut compatibility mode off, the problem persists. There's a thread on the matter here, but with no solution. Thanks, Asaf SOLUTION: Stop Intellitype when using internal keyboard. See detailed howto here. EDIT: Some new findings on the matter - If I exit messenger entirely and restart (or simply stop) the service "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant" the problem is solved until I run messenger again. It persists even after entirely closing messenger, until I restart the said service. EDIT2: The above service "Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant" actual name is wlidsvc. There's no shortcut defined for messenger, nor is there any other hot key in its preferences. EDIT3: I'm not sure if it's relates, but some of the Fn keys are not working - Fn + F1 doesn't put the machine to sleep, Fn + F3 doesn't show battery status. EDIT4: Problem probably relates to conflict with IntelliType Pro. See my answer below. Said conflict also causes Undo command when disabling Wireless (Wireless touch button), and other side effects for various keys.

  Hello, I've been noticing this since Windows Vista. I see it on Windows 7, now, as well. In any case throughout the day I notice that my computer makes apparently random device-connect and/or device-disconnect ("boink") sounds. I suppose it is the same sound you hear when connecting or disconnecting a USB device such as a thumb drive. I've noticed that this happens on each of three computers I work with at home, my wife's computer, and my machine at work. It happens without any user action at all - i.e. I'll be just sitting there (hands off my mouse and keyboard), and the computer will make the sound. There is no visual queue or anything. Just the sound. I have sometimes gone in pursuit of the sound - running virus scans, examining event logs and such, and observing task manager - but have never had any luck tracking this thing down, but have not had any luck. Surely someone else out there must be experiencing this, too. Any ideas? Thanks, Steve

• USPTO site asks for Quicktime Plug-in which I already have installed. Why?

  Whenever I try to watch the images of a patent in the USPTO site (example) using Firefox, the browser asks me to download the latest Quicktime, manually. This is totally strange because I already HAVE the latest plug-in (it even appears on my Firefox add-ons list). In the past I have only been able to see patent images using Safari. But never with Firefox. Is it a USPTO problem or a Mozilla one? Is there a way to fix the problem? edit: I can't see TIFF images neither with Internet Explorer (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions) nor with Chrome. All these browsers don't know how to open embedded TIFF images because they don't recognize the installed Quicktime plugin. A USPTO conspiracy to promote Safari? Come to think of it, I had this problem in my old computer as well. It had a 32-bit Vista OS, now I have 64-bit Windows 7. I hate TIFF and can't find Mozilla-specific information anywhere.. Arghh, am I the only one here with this freak problem?!

• Cannot find network path for computer in workgroup of home Windows XP PCs

  VMWare Workstation 6.5 is running as an app on a Windows Vista 64bit PC host. Thanks to Workstation we have 2 guest machines running: TerriVM and MattVM (both of these run Windows XP SP2). We are attempting to get virtual networking configured so we can access the files of both of these VM guest systems from other real PCs connected to this home network. We think we are close but we can't quite get it right... Here is what we've done so far: * On VM Workstation, we set "Host Virtual Network Mapping" to use VMnet0 with the setting "Bridge to an automatically chosen adapter". * On each VM guest (i.e. using Windows explorer on XP), we rightmouse on the C disk, click "Sharing" tab, set shareName to "C_Disk" and check both boxes labeled "Share this folder on the network" and "Allow network users to change my files". Symptoms: On "JohnsRealXP" PC, we go to Windows Explorer, My Computer, Map Network Drive, type into Folder textbox: \TerriVM\C_Disk and assign drive letter T. We see all the folders on this shared drive and can open files on them. So that is good. On same "JohnsRealXP" PC, we go to Windows Explorer, My Computer, Map Network Drive, type into Folder textbox: \MattVM\C_Disk and assign drive letter M. We get a message box "_The network path \mattvm\C_Disk could not be found_". Alternatively, we type just \mattvm\ into the Folder box and click "Browse" and get a dialog box where we drill down from "Entire Network" to "Microsoft Windows Network" to "Workgroup" where both TerriVM and MattVM are listed as computers on the network. Clicking the + sign next to MattVM gives an hourglass and never enables the OK button and I have to cancel. In summary, I think we've attempted to share both of these virtual machines using the same techniques and connect to them in similar fashion, but one connects properly and the other machine can be seen but no shared resources on it can be accessed. Can anyone suggest something possibly overlooked or something to try? Thanks so much in advance.

• Sony PMB causing failure to load Windows 7 Pro 64-bit normally or even Safe Mode

  After installing Sony's Picture Motion Browser on my desktop with Windows 7 Pro x64, it always goes to Startup Repair due to Windows 7 failing to start. This always happens after I try to install it. I've installed with all unnecessary programs closed and all disk drives and unnecessary usb ports empty. I don't exactly know what is causing the problem. Any ideas?
