• Desktop sharing options for Ubuntu 12.04 with Unity

  I would like to be able to access my office Ubuntu 12.04 machine from home, from a Mac Mini with Mac OSX. I have a VPN and I am able to access my office machine over SSH, so connectivity is not a problem. I browsed other questions, and it seems that there are several options: VNC XRDP FreeNX (haven't heard this one before) Are there any other? I have been using Remote Desktop on Windows before, and I actually like it. Not sure how well is XRDP implemented. I also used VNC several years back, and I didn't like its performance back then - not sure if things have changed since then. As I said above, the machine I want to access is running Ubuntu 12.04, with Unity. And I am using Unity by choice - I really like it and would like to continue using it :) The client computer is running Mac OSX (Snow Leopard). Based on your previous experience what is the best setup for this environment?

  When you are creating BI template through application the RTF template information will stored in XDO_LOBS table.Column LOB_CODE will store the template short code,ie the link between the template and lob. When you migrate the template through java oracle.apps.xdo.oa.util.XDOLoader make sure the rtf file name and template short code are same.Otherwise the rtf will not get attached. Eg:  Source Instance Template Short Code : XXCUST_TEMPLATE RTF Name: XXCUST_TEMPLATE_1.rtf When you migrate the above details through  XDOLoader the rtf will not get attached to template in destination instance.So make sure RTF Name should be XXCUST_TEMPLATE.

This is an updated re-release of the generic Partial Schema Exporter Tool.  The generic patch is for 7.3.1.x and 12.2.x. TABLE_REORG was introduced in 7.3.1.3 12.2.0.  Therefore for 7.3.1.x the schema must be at 7.3.1.3 or above. This is build 3 of the patch. It contains fixes for the following bugs - BUG 17495971 - DEMANTRA 12.2 - CUMULATIVE HISTORY NOT CORRECT   It now only uses DATA_PUMP COMPRESSION only on Enterprise Edition for 11g and and up. - Bug 17452153 - 1OFF:16086475:TRYING TO FILTER DROP DOWN IN A METHOD CALL USING MORE THAN 1 ATTR   It now builds GL level filters with and without the GL id column where applicable. • Gzip compress offline?

  I've configured my site to serve compressed content by putting this line in .htaccess AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/html text/plain text/xml text/javascript text/css application/javascript application/json This works perfectly for almost all files except a few large JSON files that are above 200Kb. For some reason they are not being compressed. I see that they don't using the net tab in firebug and the Network section in chrome. So as a workaround I thought I could compress these files offline and have Apache read them compressed. What tool should I use to compress them? is the linux gzip the one? any special flags or something I should use? What should I put in .htaccess so that the server would know to serve these files with content-encoding gzip ?

• Mounting Samba share whenever it's available, unmounting when it's not

  I am trying setup permanent samba share mounts. That's not too hard using these instructions. But, I want them to Automatically remount whenever I join the network where these shares are available. Automatically unmount (or make access requests fail immediately instead of hanging) whenever I leave the network, i.e. avoid this automatically. Googling suggests that AutoFS might be helpful. I gather it takes care of the 1. above but I am not sure about the 2. The other questions about automated Samba mounts, i.e. How to mount a samba share permanently?, do not seem to address automatic remounts/unmounts, so I think this is not a duplicate. Thanks.

• Displaying and updating score in Android (OpenGL ES 2)

  I'm using a FrameLayout where I have a GLSurfaceView at the bottom and a few Views on top of it. One of those Views is a TextView that displays the current score. Here's how I'm updating the score TextView based on what happens in my game loop: whenever an event happens that increases the score, I call activity.runOnUiThread(updater), where activity is the activity that has the above FrameLayout (my main game activity) and updater is just a Runnable that increments the score. From my understanding, using runOnUiThread() from the OpenGL thread is standard practice - otherwise you'll get an exception, I can't remember its name. The problem is that there's a very noticeable lag between the event and the score update. For example the character gets a coin, but the coin count is not updated quickly. I tried summing all the score events from my game loop and calling runOnUiThread() only once per loop, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference - the lag is still noticeable. How can I improve my design to avoid this lag?

  Actually I came across a question in Dynamic Programming where we need to find the number of ways to tile a 2 X N area with tiles of given dimensions.. Here is the problem statement Now after a bit of recurrence solving I came out with these. F(n) = F(n-1) + F(n-2) + 2G(n-1), and G(n) = G(n-1) + F(n-1) I know how to solve LR model where one function is there.For large N as is the case in the above problem we can do the matrix exponentiation and achieve O(k^3log(N)) time where k is the minimum number such that for all km F(n) does not depend on F(n-k). The method of solving linear recurrence with matrix exponentiation as it is given in that blog. Now for the LR involving two functions can anyone suggest an approach feasible enough for large N.

• What's the difference between my nameserver and CName settings?

  I have purchased a domain name(mxsoup.net) through GoDaddy, and it is just parked. In order to set up my custom URL for my SourceAudio site, they give me the following instructions: In order to host your site at a your own URL, we need you to set up some DNS records to point your URL to us. Specifically, we need two CNAME references, one for 'www.mxsoup.net' and one for 'secure.mxsoup.net', both of which should point to 'web2.sourceaudio.com'. But the rep on the phone at GoDaddy said that my site is hosted at HostMonster.com, and therefore I need to talk to them to accomplish this(which is possibly true, but my business owner says he hasn't purchased hosting for this particular domain, yet he does have some other sites in his hostmonster hosting acct.) My GoDaddy account shows that my nameservers are pointing at NS1.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and NS2.HOSTMONSTER.COM, and I can edit those. But is this the same as setting up the CNAME as described above? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Upgrade or replace a Wubi installation?

  I've got Windows 7 with Wubi 11.10 installed. I would like to upgrade to 12.04 but I'm not sure what the best path would be. I'm not skilled enough to use Ubuntu all the time, and my iPhone requires me to run some Windows version for the damn iTunes software. I would love to run Windows XP but I can't figure out how to install it via USB -- my computer has no cd drive. I'd like to run Windows XP and Wubi 12.04 on top of that. Or, perhaps, Ubuntu 12.04 natively and Windows XP alongside of that. So I guess I have 2 questions: (lazy) Should I upgrade my Wubi from inside Ubuntu, or should I remove Wubi 11.10 from within Windows and install a brand new Wubi 12.04? (proper) How can I install Windows XP and Ubuntu 12.04 alongside each other? Update: I am going to create a separate question post about the above #2 question... I realize it's wrong to ask two questions in one post when they are that different.

• Why bother writing an Windows 8 app?

  So you want to know more about development for Window 8. Great! There are lots of reasons you should be excited about this. Since I don’t know why YOU are interested in this, I’ll make a list of reasons people can choose from. (as a side note: whenever I talk about Win8 development I am referring to the Metro Style / WinRt side of things. Apps for the ‘classic’ desktop side of Win8 on Intel are business as usual…) So… Why would you care about making an app for Windows 8? 1. It’s cool. Let’s not beat around the bush: if you like development for a hobby then you’ll love to work on this new platform. You can create apps in a relative short time (short time as in compared to writing a new CRM system) and that makes it great for a hobby product. 2. You’ll stand out. Hey, we all need an ego boost every now and then. We all need to feel special. So if you can manage to be one of the first to have you app in the Store then you’ll likely to be noticed. Just close your eyes for a moment and image you standing in a bar. It’s crowded, and then you casually say “Oh yeah, I just had my app certified and it’s in the Win8 store now”. People will stop talking, will offer you drinks and beautiful women / gorgeous man / furry creatures from Alpha Centauri (whatever your preferences are) will propose. Or maybe not. Anyway…. 3. Make some cash! IDC predicts there will be about 350,000,000 Windows 8 licenses sold in the next year. Think about that number. 350,000,000. And they all have access to the Store. Where you’re app will be. With one little click they can select it, download and somehow magically $1.00 or $2.00 from their bank account is transferred to yours. Now, I am not saying that all of those people will download and buy your app but what if only 1% of them did? Remember: there aren’t that many apps available yet….. 4. Learn. Creating new small apps is a great way to learn new stuff. Yes, you could read about it (on this blog for instance) but the only way to learn something is to do it. So be prepared for the future and learn something new by doing it.Write an app! Now! 5. The biggie (for me at least): it’s fun. Even if you remove the points above it’s still fun to write for these devices and this platform. Now some of you will say : “But why not write a great app for IOS or Android?” I think this is a valid question. Of course the novelty of the platform wears out and points 2 and 3 from above list will not be as relevant as it is today. But still 1 4 and 5 remain. And don’t forget: if you already work on the Microsoft platform it’s not that hard to learn this new Win8 stuff. If you have done some XAML development (be it WPF or Silverlight) you are almost there in becoming a good Win8 developer. So you’ll be more productive much sooner than when you have to learn Objective C or Java. Even if you’re a HTML / Javascript developer (I say developer here, not designer) you’ll be up to speed on Win8 development pretty soon. Yes, you, that funky Web Developer who lives and breathes HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript / Node.Js / JQuery: you too can be a Win8 developer. A first class Win8 developer! So..   Our company owns a domain say www.mycompany.com. I understand that it is trivial to get an SSL certificate for above domain since we do have a website running on that address. We want a certificate for a subdomain say sub.mycompany.com. We intend to use this sub-domain in our organisation network only and have no plans to publish a public website on this subdomain. So the question is "Is it necessary to have a DNS entry for subdomain, resolving to our IP address and host some page on that address?" I hope proving that main domain is in our control, we can get an SSL certificate for sub domain also. Is it possible?

• Prevent gnome-shell's dash from listing Recent Items

  I am using gnome-shell in Ubuntu 11.10. I am getting annoyed when dash search lists Recent Items. I have tried many ways to prevent it like Deleting activity.sqlite and activity.sqlite-journal files under ~/.local/share/zeitgeist Adding all the possible entries in Activity Log Manager to prevent application logging Specifying time range in Activity Log Manager to forget my activities. But none of the methods are working. The recent items list is still populated. Is there any way to tell dash not to list Recent Items while searching, other than the above methods? Or is there any way to delete the recent items list?

• How can I force the Nautilus sidebar text color to stay white in my Ambiance modification?

As shown below, the text color for the sidebar does not want to stay white unless it is selected. It did earlier, but now it's not and I'm not sure why. How can I force that text to stay white in the theme files? (See the linked question above for a reference as to what changes I made; everything else is the same as regular Ambiance.)

  I have been trying to use English-UK thesaurus in LibreOffice but so far cannot get it to work. I have installed mythes-en-us as only it was available in repos. As suggested in some forums I searched for openoffice.org thesaurus, but again US version was available. As a result I can't enable thesaurus when I choose English UK: As instructed elsewhere I tried this: cd /usr/share/myspell/dicts sudo ln -s th_en_US_v2.dat th_en_GB_v2.dat sudo ln -s th_en_US_v2.idx th_en_GB_v2.idx Still the result is same as shown in above screenshots. What can be done now?

• Offline apt-get update to age of cache

  I have a script to quickly upgrade a Live or fresh system from cached files on a flash drive. In essence, it looks like this: # *Code to remove and symlink /var/cache/apt/ if currently empty of packages.* sudo apt-get dist-upgrade # Quick offline cached upgrade; not limited by slow WANs. echo $'\nMake sure Internet is reachable and press enter for complete online upgrade.'; read sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade # Complete online upgrade. The problem is that the ‘cached upgrade’ seems to ignore the cached pkgcache.bin and srcpkgcache.bin which is where I assume apt-get update stores its changes, so the upgrade completes as if the system is up-to-date. Useless. So in that case, I need some code to apt-get update to the age of the package cache on my flash drive. This code would be placed between the 1st and 2nd lines of the code above.

  I recently joined a company and it is my first job. When reading the code base, I felt that the code was not well written. It seemed to me that the code had most of the problems mentioned here and also seemed to have an Anemic Domain Model. There are no unit tests and they don't employ any code quality checking tools like findbugs or pmd. The problem I have is that the code is very difficult to understand. Maybe my conclusions are wrong because I am not that experienced. I need advice on whether to communicate the above facts to a superior or not. If I am to communicate, to whom(Tech Lead, Architect, Product Manager) and how? And if I do communicate will they take it badly since I'm a Junior and has no experience?

• How do I prevent a KActor from changing the orientation of its Z-Axis?

  So I have an object that inherits from KActor that I would like to behave as a dynamic physics object, but I want its Z-Axis to remain upright, but very stiffly. I've tried the bStayUpright that triggers the "Stay Upright Spring". The problem is, it's a spring, and the object in question oscillates into position when I want it to remain oriented properly without wobbling. In the image above, the yellow block has fallen onto the gray box, and it is currently pivoting about the contact point as it tries to right itself. Should I be tweaking the StayUprightMaxTorque and StayUprightTorqueFactor parameters, or should I be using a Constraint of some sort?

  I have a script, and now it's the perfect time to have an option to change theme templates. I was looking forward to store these files in php files, or html files. with CSS file. I looked over some codes and I found that they use brackets to refer to the variable. Here's an example of a template block: <div class='block_div'> <center>{title}</center> {content} </div> I know that I can use PHP vars usering <?=$var;?>. However, I think the one above is better, and I looked over the web to find anything about it but I couldn't. My Question is how I can use these brackets in my php or html code. to let the user changing the template only not the code!

• part of google search appliance drawing from http instead of https

  we are using the google search appliance in our web app. It is used by several other parts of our organization but we are using it on a web app that uses https. So, we followed google's instructions to get all the google code via https so that users don't get the annoying "This page contains both secure and insecure items" popup. Most of the google code has behaved and come to us as https, but there is a part of it pulling from http://www.google.com/cse full URL = http://www.google.com/cse?q=searchTerma&cx=001025153263958516519%3Aj2323tveixc&cof=FORID%3A11%3BNB%3A1&ie... that causes the insecure items warning to popup. This popup occurs in the results page and the above URL is the only non-secure request I can find.

  Is there a phrase to describe an algorithim or programme is complete in that given any possible value for its arguments there is a predicatable outcome? i.e. all the ramifications have been considered whatever the context? A simple example would be the below function: function returns string get_item_type(int type_no) { if(type_no < 10) return "hockey stick" else if (type_no < 20) return "bulldozer" else return "unknown" } (excuse the dismal pseudo code) No matter what number is supplied all possibiblites are catered for. My question is: is there a word to fill the blank here: "get_item_type() is ______ complete" ? (The answer is not Turing Complete - that is something quite different - but I annoyingly always think of something as "Turing Complete" when I am thinking of the above).
