• Are there advantages of using hard coded URLs for localization?

  On the Synergy website, localization is detected (and can be overridden) but uses the same URL for all languages. Some websites however, like Wikipedia have language specific subdomains. What are the advantages of having either subdomains or subdirectories (i.e. a specific URL) for each language localization? Also, should it automatically redirect the user to the specific subdomain/subdir based on the language that the browser requests? I suspect that there are advantages, which I'm guessing are: When the website appears in search results for non-English languages, the translated page description will be shown (assuming there is a translation provided by the website). When a user shares a page (e.g. through twitter), it will show in a specific language. Perhaps this is a disadvantage though? Am I correct, if so, are there more advantages?

• How can a regular user be notified of a required reboot?

  I am administrating multiple machines on which I am admin and the users have not admin-rights. The machines are configured to pull and install updates automatically. A new kernel will require a reboot. On Ubuntu Precise this was made visible to the user through the color change of the shutdown-menu in the upper right corner (it turned red). Now, on Ubuntu Trusty, there is not color change anymore. Also, the Update Manager will not pop up for regular users reminding them of an outstanding reboot. How can a regular user know that a reboot is required?

• rsync verify a file already exists in dest folder so it will skip the copy on the 1st sync

  I have been looking at different tutorials about rsync about some specific situation I have. I have a home server with all my pics, this server is my backup, my PC is the one that receives the new pics and until now i had been manually copying and pasting new photos from the PC to the server. I was trying to setup rsync to do this automatically and in principle, it does without problem. Now the issue; when I fire up rsync it start copying all the files, even the ones were already in the destination (this is because it is the 1st sync). so my question is: Is it possible for rsync to verify that a file is the same (name/size/bin) so it will skip the copy on the 1st sync?

• Is there a standard for machine-readable descriptions of RESTful services?

  I've interacted with a few RESTful APIs that provided excellent documentation for humans and descriptive URIs, but none of them seem to return machine-readable descriptions of themselves. It's not too tough to write methods of my own that assemble the right paths, and many language-specific API libraries are already just wrappers around RESTful requests. But the next level of abstraction seems really useful: a library that could read in an API's own machine readable documentation and generate the wrappers automatically, perhaps with a call to some standard URI like base_url + '/documentation' Are there any standards for machine-readable API documentation? Am I doing REST wrong? I am a relatively new programmer, but this seems like a good idea.

• Software Center won't take into account my changed OpenID name: any idea?

  Failing to install IntelliJ from the Software Center, I realized my login is wrong in the /etc/apt/auth.conf entry that the install process generates. In this file, I see my original OpenID, that's the one which got automatically generated when signing up on Launchpad. It contains my last name so I changed it. I purged conf and binaries for Ubuntu One, reinstalled, deleted all listed "Devices" from app, all "Applications" from Launchpad. Deleted ~/.cache/software-center/, reboot, but still: When installing IntelliJ, the auth.conf file receives my original OpenID, not the modified one Problem is that the commercial subscription, for IntelliJ private PPA, uses my modified OpenID, so authentication attempt fails. I can't remove nor modify this subscription, even by changing back my OpenID into Launchpad. Any idea to solve this?

• large tmpfs /run partition - must it be so big?

  I am running Ubuntu 11.10 desktop on a couple of 8G RAM Wintel boxes. Both have been created automatically by the default installer with a 1.6GB tmpfs /run partition, where I suspect this amount of RAM could be more usefully used elsewhere in the system. I suspect that the installer takes 20% as the default, which is probably OK for boxes with lots less RAM, but seems overkill for an 8GB system. My question is - can I change its size, if so, how, and what are the risks in doing so? The /run partition does not appear in the /etc/fstab file so it must be set up elsewhere.

  I was always confused about header files. They are so strange: you include .h file which doesn't include .cpp but .cpp are somehow compiled too. NOTE: I UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING ABOUT THE HEADERS, PLEASE DON'T TELL ME I'M STUPID OR SHOULD USE OTHER LANGUAGE Recently I joined a team project, and of course, both .h and .cpp are used.   With Entity Framework 5 in Visual Studio 2012 the code first feature could let you come to the question “Where is the automatically created database located?” I run in the question after changing the model which throws during the next run this error: “The model backing the 'MyContext' context has changed since the database was created. But where is the database and what type is it??? In this constellation the frameworks generates a localDB. You could access this database via SQL Server Object Explorer. For the first time you have to add this localDB. The server name is “(localdb)\v11.0”: And so we could browse through the content of this database. It got the same name like the context class.

• Recognizing text fields according to their label value

  I have an application who has text fields (not select, not checkbox or other types) where an user can enter some value, like this: ISBN and E-Mail are the label of each input. Now I have to automatically test these inputs according to their label. The question is: how to recognize that, for example, the first input requires an ISBN code? I programmed something like this: turn the label value to lowercase check if the label value contains isbn if so set the field value to a random ISBN code (i.e.: 1234567890), else set it to a random value (default) For the email field: turn the label value to lowercase check if the label value contains e-mail or email or mail if so set the field value to a random email (i.e.: [email protected]), else set it to a random value (default) And so on for each text field I encounter. Is that reliable? How can I improve the "recognizing part"? I know only the label value and the field value (what is already written in the field by default) for each text input.

• Menu bar and launcher missing in new installation of ubuntu 13.04

  I have just installed ubuntu 13.04 on my ThinkPad laptop. I am missing the launcher and upper bar. I only found references to the same problem for upgrades, so I tried everything written here, here and here with no success. However, referring to the second link, I ran ccsm and found my Ubuntu Unity Plugin unchecked. Checking it required to also enable the OpenGL and so I did. But, apparently I am unable to enable the OpenGL. Trying to enable it manually...and the checkbox gets automatically unchecked after few seconds. Please help. Update: I have Intel graphics driver, maybe the problem is specifically with it?. I also tried running ccsm after logging using CTRL+ALT+F1 like given here. I was able to enable OpenGL and the Ubuntu Unity Plugin there, but still, no effect on my display, also after reboot.

• Error [9783] Support for cores revisions 0x17 and 0x18 disabled by module

  At start up after my dell BIOS load i get the puprle screen and then a black screen and this at the top "[9783] Support for cores revisions 0x17 and 0x18 disabled by module... " sorry i think there's more to it and that's probably crucial but it goes SO fast sometimes and sometimes slower... I just wiped my laptop and installed 13.10 over it and ticked LVM at installation and log in automatically, idk if that would make a difference here...   Torrent from the Pirate Bay even though I have Tixati installed and working? Asks for an application which I don't have (apturl or something similar?) Trying to get the latest AMD Radeon drivers automatically installed? the main file downloads...but just shows up in a window full of files but idk where to drag them. And PlayOnLinux my one hope for gaming since Steam is buggin out without proper drivers? Can't figure out where to "mount" the DVD version it asks for. I'm so lost. I dove head first into the Linux thing thinking it was wildly superior, and maybe it is, but dang if the simplest things aren't hard to do. Any help appreciated. I've been reading guides and manuals but what I need is human experience most of all.

• How to make my proxy settings change depending on the network I connect to?

  My company's corporate network requires me to set a network proxy to access the net, but when I am anywhere else, I don't need it. The proxy settings in Ubuntu (System - Preferences - Proxy server) allowed me to create "locations" that I can manually select. Then I have a "default" location (with no proxy) and a "work" location (with my company's proxy in it). Is there a way to make Ubuntu automatically select the "work" location based on the connection I'm using? I thought I could use the IP subnet (very specific) to detect where I am, but I have no idea how to set it up... Edit: I really need to have the proxy settings set at the system level. All my network connections (IMAP, SMTP, chat, etc) need to go through the proxy. Not only the web browser.

• can't chmod on external hard disk?

  I have an USB3.0 external hard disk, partitioned to 3 NTFS partitions. When I plug the hard disk in, the 3 partitions automatically mounted under /media. So far so good. I can read and write to files, or mkdir, etc on these partitions. But I can't do chmod/chown on any of the files/directories on these partitions. The owner:group always myself, and the mode are always 700 for directories and 600 for files. I have another partition on internal harddisk also mounted. That partition works fine. I looked the output of mount command, the only difference between mount options is that there is one extra 'default_permissions' on the external hard disks. Anyway I can set the owner:group and mode on these files and directories.

• Dual monitor not working after an update

  I did a package manager update yesterday and it turns out that my dual monitor setup has stopped working. I have poor vision so I really need to connect to a much bigger screen, but since yesterday, when I connect the screen to my laptop, the screen does not automatically reset itself to the laptop display. Even after lots of trial and error with the display settings, I am getting different dispalys on the laptop and external screen and right now only the big screen is active while the laptop has blanked out. • Why doesn't `unity --reset` work?

• What program to use to create subtitles for a video?

  I have a video that I want to create subtitles for. Is there a program that can perform rudimentary speech-to-text in order to set the correct start/stop of each individual subtitle create rudimentary text subtitles (using some sort of speech-to-text) I know about gnome-subtitles. However, it requires extensive effort to create those subtitles manually. You need to select yourself the start and stop for each sentence. Youtube has the above features (creates rudimentary text subtitles at the correct timings, using speech-to-text). However I would rather not upload the videos to Youtube just to get my subtitles. Is it possible to do the subtitles efficiently in Ubuntu? Update: I plan to use the .srt subtitles only, and do not need to hard code them on the videos. My biggest requirement is to have the program automatically find the start/stop for each sentence, so that I write the text in it.

• Bluetooth connectivity on Ubuntu 11.04

  I tried to connect to a device via Bluetooth from my laptop running Ubuntu 11.04, and I have some difficulty. I had to write a script to restart the Bluetooth dongle (it does not activate Bluetooth automatically). An icon appears in the top status bar on Ubuntu (good). Pairing of the devices happen easily enough (good). Trying to view files on the device from the laptop, the window that comes up does not show the paired devices. There is a window, but it's too small, and you dont know which device is selected (bad). If you choose the wrong device (I only knew it was the wrong device when my cell phone lit up), the icon on the status bar disappears, and doesn't come back, even though the devices are still paired (bad). Does anyone have that problem, and is there a fix? A.

• Can I use Unity with XMonad?

  I've been using Fedora for a while, but I recently decided to upgrade my ubuntu installation from 12.04 to 12.10. While I was using Fedora, I found xmonad tiling window manager which I sort of got working with xfce. I really like xmonad and I now automatically use the keyboard shortcuts without even thinking. So I would like to use xmonad with unity. Now, I have seen several blog posts etc. that explain how to setup the whole thing in 12.04, with Unity2D. But now, Unity2D has been removed, and the old methods no longer apply. I have read that Unity is actually just a Compiz plugin, and that the wm can't be replaced. Does no version of Unity have a replaceable WM? I've also tried MATE (GNOME2 fork) with xmonad on 12.10 and that is totally broken for me, but that's for another question.

• Moving two objects proportionally

  I'm trying to move two objects away from each other at a proportional distance, but on different scales. I'm not quite sure how to do this. Object A can go from position 0.1 to 1. Object B has no limits. If object B is decreasing, then Object A should be decreasing at rate R. Likewise, if Object B is increasing, then Object A increases at rate R. How can I tie these two Object positions together so that in an update loop, they automatically update their positions? I tried using: ObjA.Pos += 0.001f * ObjB.VelocityY; //0.001f is the rate This works but there's an error each time it runs. ObjA starts off at its max position 1 but then the next time it will stop at 0.97, 0.94, 0.91 etc.. This is due to the 0.001f rate I put in. Is there a way to control the rate, yet not end up with the rounding error?

• Make recovery disk for customers

  I hear about other computer shops that sells customers recovery disks that they have created. I'm assuming all that they do is make a image and uses an automation script that allows this to be done. I have seen where clonezilla does this, but it has to be the same HDD size or they might have problems down the road. Is there any other freeware that I could do this with that allows you to use on any size disk. Ghost is really good for this because it automatically fills up empty space with the partition and never needs any user input or "Expert Mode" like clonezilla. But it is not freeware.

• Should I be concerned about hAtom tags on my blog?

  I am using a theme that automatically adds hatom-entry, hatom-feed classes on my WordPress blog. I read that such tags/classes should be used for syndicated content. Anyway, then I ran a Rich Snippet Tool, which threw a "HAtomfeed" error. So I removed a "hfeed" div tag. Now, should I be concerned? Can this cause any problems? I still have a couple of these classes (listed below), and I just hope they do not effect my site's ranking. For now, these are the tags the Rich Snippet Tool has detected: hatom-feed hatom-entry: entry-title: entry-content: published: author: fn: person-name: url: Appreciate your help! • update-grub is setting a wrong linux root partition

  Initially, Ubuntu was installed on another partition (sda5 or sda4). At some point I did manually move the root partition to sda2. Now, the problem is that whenever a new kernel is installed, the automatic regeneration of the menu.lst is using the OLD Linux partition. So I have to manually change in menu.lst the lines : root (hd0,5) into root (hd0,1) How can I configure update-grub to automatically generate menu.lst with the current Linux root partition? I assume that the (hd0,5) was written somewhere at installation, but I couldn't find it.
