• Targeting a vehicle with complex movement?

  Targeting a vehicle with known constant velocity is simple, and collision is guaranteed. Imprecise AI can be modeled by adding a small error factor. But how would one go about targeting a vehicle whose movements are more complex? Perhaps it's evading the AI or another game object. I've been thinking about how I'd do it myself in a FPS (in which bullets have finite speed) and think there might need to be at least couple of targeting modes based on the target's movement in the previous second or so: If it's near linear (peak acceleration in a certain range) target with the linear model If it's highly irregular (perhaps size of bounding box of recent positions could be used?) , target at an average For now I can assume 2d space, AI is stationary and projectile moves linearly.

• How to name a clamp function that only clamps from one side?

  Clamp() is a function that ensures that provided variable is in provided range. You can find such function in .NET, in Unity, and probably anywhere. While it is useful, I often need to clamp my value from one side only. For example, to ensure that float is always non-negative or always positive (like radius value from inspector). I used names ClampFromAbove() and ClampFromBelow(), but I wonder if such names is good or even grammatically valid in programming-English. Also, it probably make sense to distinguish non-negative case too. How'd you name such function? Something like EnsureNonNegative()? My intention is creating pair of extension methods and use them like this: var normalizedRadius = originalRadius.ClampFromBelow(0.0001); var distance = someVector.Magnitude.ClampFromAbove(maxDistance);

• How to persuade C fanatics to work on my C++ open source project?

  I am launching an open-source project into a space where a lot of the development is still done Linux-kernel-style, i.e. C-language with a low-level mindset. There are multiple benefits to C++ in our space but I fear those used to working in C will be scared off. How can I make the case for the benefits of C++? Specifically, the following C++ attributes are very valuable: concept of objects and reference-counting pointers - really don't want to have to malloc(sizeof(X)) or memcpy() structs templates for specialising whole bodies of code with specific performance optimizations and for avoiding duplication of code. template metaprogramming related to the above syntactic sweetness available (e.g. operator overloading, to be used in very small doses) STL Boost libraries Many of the knee-jerk negative reactions to C++ are illfounded. Performance does not suffer: modern compilers can flatten dozens of call stack levels and avoid bloat through wide use of template specializations. Granted, when using metaprogramming and building multiple specializations of a large call tree, compile time is slower but there are ways to mitigate this. How can I sell C++?

• Unable to access media wiki pages from another computer?

  I have set up a web server in my Windows 7 with easyPHP. The website works fine when I browse the locally via localhost or 127.0.0.1. But, unable to open the site from another computer which is in the same LAN or in connected to my LAN. My local IP is in the 10.x.x.x range. The firewall turned off on my private network. I've also tried by changing Listen 127.0.0.1:80 to Listen 80 In httpd.conf but still i'm unable to access the media wiki from other machines. Unable to browse the pages from other machines using localhost or using IP address (Ex: 10.x.x.x). Could you please let me know your suggestions and comments?

• Vector normalization gives very imprecise results

  When I normalize vectors I receive very strange results. The lengths of the normalized vectors range from 1.0 to almost 1.5. The functions are all written by me, but I just can't find a mistake in my algorithm. When I normalize I just divide all components of the vector by the vector's length. public double length(){ return Math.sqrt(x*x + y*y); } public void normalize(){ if(length() > 0){ x /= length(); y /= length(); } } Is this supposed to happen? I mean I can see the length ranging from 0.9 to 1.1 at worst, but this is just overwhelming. Cheers

• Detect rotated rectangle collision

  I'm trying to implement a script that detects whether two rotated rectangles collide for my game. I used the method explained in the following article for my implementation in Google Dart. 2D Rotated Rectangle Collision I tried to implement this code into my game. Basically from what I understood was that I have two rectangles, these two rectangles can produce four axis (two per rectangle) by subtracting adjacent corner coordinates. Then all the corners from both rectangles need to be projected onto each axis, then multiplying the coordinates of the projection by the axis coordinates (point.x*axis.x+point.y*axis.y) to make a scalar value and checking whether the range of both the rectangle's projections overlap. When all the axis have overlapping projections, there's a collision. First of all, I'm wondering whether my comprehension about this algorithm is correct. If so I'd like to get some pointers in where my implementation (written in Dart, which is very readable for people comfortable with C-syntax) goes wrong. Thanks!

• Just installed Ubuntu 12.04. When booting, all I get is a black screen with cursor

  Installation appears to go fine. After rebooting, I get my motherboard loading screens, but when it comes time for Ubuntu to boot, I just get a black screen with a blinking white underscore in the top-left - same as I got when waiting for the install CD to load, except it lasts forever. The only keypress it seems to recognize is ctrl+alt+del, which reboots. Letters don't register, function keys w/ or w/o modifiers do nothing. I've installed Ubuntu 12.04 twice and got the same error. The first time, I installed it as the only OS, and had it take up the whole disk. The second time, I installed Windows 7 first, then Ubuntu by specifying custom partitions. After this install, it would boot straight to Windows without showing grub. I used EasyBCD to add the Ubuntu installation to grub, and this got grub to show, and let me select it, but it led back to the same error described up top. I've had Linux Mint 11 and 12 installed on this PC, but was unable to get previous versions of Ubuntu to install (always had errors while installing, not after). • In-memory DB to perform intersects on set slices

  I have a specific programming need where I need to efficiently store large sorted sets in memory, query them for ranges, and intersect them against other sets that are also queried for ranged. I am looking at Redis, but I can't see a range slice command. MongoDB can only use 1 index, so it has to perform row-level scans, whereas I wish to process using columns that are intersected. I'm also looking at Counchbase, but can't easily determine from the documentation if it is suited to this. I know it uses Memcached, which is AFAIK not suited to this usage. Could anyone share potential solutions for this specific problem? EDIT For example, I need to perform the following: Get the IDs of all cars where the price is between 2000 and 3000, and intersect that will all cars where the engine capacity is between 3000 and 4000.

• The very beggining research for web developing

  It is a general question to ask what would be the easiest way to start a website, however every one need a little boost up at the begging. There are content management systems, or admin panels, or some people have developed their own systems and many more diffirent things people use at the very beggining. Among others my way was looking for a very lightweight cms and develop a system on to it, unfortunately I couldn't find a good system to develop on, for example I decided to develop on snewscms (the lightest weight cms) but it is really hard to manage since it is not developed with object oriented programming standarts and I thought it would be a mistake to continue developing on to such a system. On the other hand starting to code from the core would be weak about security, and using a massive cms like joomla or drupal will not be good since there will be many things that are unused and moreover I will not feel well when I don't know what I am controlling since it is not easy to know every part of them. What I am asking is what would you do if you had lost all the files you are currently using today, where would you start from? What tool would you use? Or is there a lightweight and well coded tool to get start with?

• Cisco ASA: How to route PPPoE-assigned subnet?

  We've just received a fiber uplink, and I'm trying to configure our Cisco ASA 5505 to properly use it. The provider requires us to connect via PPPoE, and I managed to configure the ASA as a PPPoE client and establish a connection. The ASA is assigned an IP address by PPPoE, and I can ping out from the ASA to the internet, but I should have access to an entire /28 subnet. I can't figure out how to get that subnet configured on the ASA, so that I can route or NAT the available public addresses to various internal hosts. My assigned range is: 188.xx.xx.176/28 The address I get via PPPoE is 188.xx.xx.177/32, which according to our provider is our Default Gateway address. They claim the subnet is correctly routed to us on their side. How does the ASA know which range it is responsible for on the Fiber interface? How do I use the addresses from my range? To clarify my config; The ASA is currently configured to default-route to our ADSL uplink on port Ethernet0/0 (interface vlan2, nicknamed Outside). The fiber is connected to port Ethernet0/2 (interface vlan50, nicknamed Fiber) so I can configure and test it before making it the default route. Once I'm clear on how to set it all up, I'll fully replace the Outside interface with Fiber. [HttpPost] public ActionResult ReportByRange(FormCollection formValues) { Period reportPeriod = formValues["ReportPeriod"]; // creates a Period, with the expected values } The problem is if I replace the FormCollection with the model type I'm passing to the view then the ReportPeriod property never gets set. [HttpPost] public ActionResult ReportByRange(ReportViewModel viewModel) { Period reportPeriod = viewModel.ReportPeriod; // this is null } I expected MVC would try to set the string from the textbox to that property and it would automatically generate a Period (as in my FormCollection example), but it's not. How do I tell the textbox I've generated in the custom editor to poplate that property on the model?

• Different Azure blob streams when using .Net client vs. REST interface

  I have encountered an unusual difference in the way that the .Net client for Azure and the direct REST API bring back streams of binary data. If I use the CloundBlob.DownloadToStream() vs. getting the response stream from the HTTP response, I get streams with the same length, but different content. Specifically the REST response seems to 0 out a series of bytes. I've discovered this issue because I'm trying to use the byte range feature for blobs which is currently not supported in the .Net client (if I'm wrong on this point and someone can point at where I can do this it might make the rest of this question irrelevant).
