• Anyone know how do i get the real time feeds on gas station price in US via webservice version?

  Hi, Anyone has pointers on how to get real time US gas station feeds via webservice ? I'm trying to develop an iphone app that give users real time gas station price near their location. Currently i was wondering is there a legit government service that produce real time gas station price in the US on a daily basis? I heard about http://gasbuddy.com/ but i don't know where they get the data source from and was not sure if i should base on their data as well. On the other hand, there is a bunch of iphone apps on the apple store that show the gas price info. I'm clueless on how did the developers got their source from to get the nearest gas station price locations. Anyone has any suggestion? Thanks for the info :- )

• Approach to data wrapping

  I'm developing in PHP and MySQL. The information about the currently logged in user is stored in many different tables. The information that I need on each page, I preload. However if something is needed from a rarely accessed table - then I do $newdata = $db->Query('SELECT * FROM rare_table WHERE user_id='.$user->id); I would like to simplify the above to a point where I don't have to specify that the query should be limited to this particular user. An ideal function call would be: $newdata = $user->Query('SELECT * FROM rare_table'); Obviously I'd have to parse the SQL and add a WHERE clause. Or add to the already existing clause. Questions: are there tools to do this? How can I develop this? Is this even a good idea?

  Hello Friends, I am having a very strange requirement, Our client is having one network management system (Netcool) which reads the number of machine from two text file. Now whenever new machine is added in those text files application needs restart. We need to develop one GUI which writes the new machine into network in those files and restart the said application. I was in favor of java based application for the same but here everybody wants solution in ASP .Net Now i am not sure is it possible to write file on sun solaris based operating system from .net application and then restarting the process which is running on the same machine. Please suggest me, it would be great if you are having any articles or examples for the same.

  Although I try to distance myself from web-oriented work nowadays (unless I need the money) I've received a number of emails from clients wishing for me to help design and develop online solutions for adult websites. Hell, when I was 17 I was asked to help design an adult website that I would not legally be able to view. After talking to a few Software Engineers and Flash Developers I have heard that there is a lot of interesting work in the adult industry for those who like to work with new technologies. Have any of you worked for a company dealing with adult/pornographic content? Did you enjoy it? If you haven't would you ever consider it? More than anything I find it interesting to see how others would view the offer, whether you would be afraid to list it on a CV/Resume, how interesting the work would be, how you think future employees would see you and whether you believe that they would judge you for working in a dirty industry.

  I'm in charge of having a BlackBerry app developed that translates the contents of a message from one language to another. So the aim would be to have a button at the bottom of a received message which says 'translate this'. I've heard that this kind of thing is possible using J2ME plus the native BlackBerry API. Can this be done for all kinds of messanging features on the Blackberry, or just some? ie I'm thinking SMS, email and BB messages. Secondly, given that the translation itself is done via a web request, I feel like this should be a fairly lightweight application. Would anyone care to hazard a guess how long it might take an experienced contractor to develop such an app?

  Hello! We sell photoalbums which our customers create theirselves using a client album editor program (for Windows). Now we are going to develop an online program so customers could create their albums in the browser: upload photos and edit them. This is going to be a rich browser application with full graphics support. The problem is what technology to use? Our server application is build in Java and we think about Java Applets so that we could reuse some Java-code. We are also not very familiar with Flash. But some people say that Flash is preferred. Maybe there're some modern technologies now? SVG or some Google technologies (like GWT but with graphics support) or something? What do you think? Thanks in advance!

• Should I learn Haskell or F# if I already know OCaml?

  I am wondering if I should continue to learn OCaml or switch to F# or Haskell. Here are the criteria I am most interested in: Longevity Which language will last longer? I don't want to learn something that might be abandoned in a couple years by users and developers. Will Inria, Microsoft, University of Glasgow continue to support their respective compilers for the long run? Practicality Articles like this make me afraid to use Haskell. A hash table is the best structure for fast retrieval. Haskell proponents in there suggest using Data.Map which is a binary tree. I don't like being tied to a bulky .NET framework unless the benefits are large. I want to be able to develop more than just parsers and math programs. Well Designed I like my languages to be consistent. Please support your opinion with logical arguments and citations from articles. Thank you.

  Want to develop a system accurately counting people that go through a normal 1-2m wide door. and twitter whenever people goes in or out and tells how many people remain inside. Now, Twitter part is easy, but people counting is difficult. There is some semi existing counting solution, but they do not quite fit my needs.   I develop an application that uses the chromium embedded framework's control. I write in C++. I would like to use CEF mechanizm to localize an application if it exists. Can i embed the application's customized strings into CEF .pak files (en-US.pak and so on) so that i can retrieve these locolized strings in run-time? If so how can i embed them and how can i retrieve a given embedded string in my application code? If .pak files is not a case then is there other ability to localize an application through CEF?   Hi, I'm having to develop a site on PHP 5.1.6 and I've just come across a bug in my site which isn't happening on 5.2+. When using foreach() to iterate over an object, I get the following error: "Fatal error: Objects used as arrays in post/pre increment/decrement must return values by reference..."   I am developing a Facebook Card Game for my thesis and i am wondering which architecture fits best? I am going to develop the game using Silverlight + ASP.NET. On the one side the game should contain player vs. player card games. On the other there will be also a lot of contant similar to Mafia Wars(or any other game like that) where you just interact with the server (incl. database) I read a lot about ASP.NET MVC, Silverlight MVVM and that stuff. But what fits best for a game like that? Also i am not sure if i should go with Silverlight 4 already? I don't want to start the wrong way. I really appreciate your help.

• How to eliminate authentication on my MVC app that is called from asp.net forms app

  Curious what recommendations anyone has. I have an existing asp.net forms application that does a Forms Authentication and has identity impersonate turned on. The application has a link to a questionnaire that I would like to develop separately in an asp.net MVC application, but I don't want the users to click on the link and be prompted for a username and password, I would like them to be able seamless start filling out the questionnaire. Is there a way to somehow transfer authentication from one .net app to another? I would like to be able to pass stuff like UserRole. What's the best way to do this?

• Which "platform" should we use for a notifier-component?

  Hi all We need to develop a notifier component. What it will do, is to scan a database at given intervals (say, every 15th minute), to see if any notifications needs to be sent out. We're running on Windows, and so we've been looking into either a Windows Service or the Windows Task Scheduler. Our biggest concern is the robustness of our implementation. If it, for some reason, crashes, can it be auto-restarted the next interval? Can we use custom logging logic, to take care of crashes? I'd like an educated guess on what to use here :) Feel free to say if you need additional info, to make such a guess.. Props will be given if someone could make a short listing of the pros n cons of a windows service vs. the windows task scheduler. Also, it should be noted, that we aren't set on either of these, so if you have any alternatives, please, do post away. Thanks in advance :)

  I've got some real nay-sayers on my hands here, and I'm trying to give them the reason why OOP was developed in the first place. I realize that OOP is not perfect for all problems and situations, but it was developed for a reason... My guess would be, that a few of those reasons would be: Maintainability Re-usability Document-ability Abstraction of Complex Technologies Dynamic Extension at Runtime... Probably some things that I'm not even aware of yet... But I really don't have much to back this up, and I was wondering why OOP was developed in the first place, and it's history. What were the people who developed OOP trying to accomplish? What led them to develop OOP?

  It must be a fairly standard wheel, so I'd rather not reinvent it. Create/modify/delete users. Ditto their passwords & maybe enforce password change every X days. Also, create groups, like "sales", "support", etc and add/remove users. The only unique part should be what they have permission to do (visit certain parts of the site after login, etc) And I'd like to store admin data in an ODBC compliant database (MySql to start with, but I may move on). Is this a new wheel? There doesn't seem to be much of anything on SourceForge, but if I could find something established and trusted I wouldn't even mind paying a few $100 as a trade of for the time needed to develop & test it.

  Hello. I'm PHP-programmer, but I'm extremely interested in learning Java. So I decided to change speciality from PHP to Java. At the moment I have an opportunity to try to make quite simple web-application (it should contain 2-3 forms, several pages with information from the database and authorization module) and also I have a chance to choose any technology I want. Besides I have about 3 months for this task. I've decided to develop site with Java technologies for the purpose of studying. I've already read a book about Java ("Java2 Complete Reference" by P.Naughton) and currently I'm reading "Thinking in Java" by B.Eckel. I clearly understand it's not enough for efficient development, but I want, at least, to try. I would be very appreciated for the advises, which framework (for example) or technology to choose (Spring, Grails etc.) and what primary aspects and technologies of Java should I pay attention to?   hey guys, for developement reasons (working with facebook-connect) i put the connect iframe in an iframe. on that way i am able to work on the connect-thing independent of my ip and don't have to develop on the live-server. the iframe holding the connect-button iframe is on my server, accessing the same db-server as the developer version (developer version is running on localhsot). as far as good ... BUT how can i let the parent site know, that the user has connected, so that i get his profile-picture displayd as reaction to this? how can i react in generally on an action/event/JS in an iframe? is there a way? can the iframe post data to the parent site? like a time-stamp and fb_userid? if the iframe stuff doesn't work ... i thougt of saving the ip to the fb_userid (to db) and check matches ... but i don't like this idea.

  I have to develop a class which can run it's own hard-coded task in a background thread and communicate with container class sending him progress updates and taking messages from it. I believe I am going to extend BackgroundWorker class but it looks a bit weird to extend and I haven't managed to find a good example wit Google. Can you share a link to a good example of solving such a task? Please don't offer placing a BackgroundWorker visually on a form and reading the standard tutorial, it's not for my case. Maybe I'd better not extend but encapsulate a BackgroundWorker, but I hardly understand how to use it outide WinForms designer either :-(

  I'm looking into Mono and .NET C#, we'll be needing to run the code on Linux Servers in the future when the project is developed. At this point I've been looking at ASP.NET MVC and Mono I run an ubuntu distro and want to do development for a web application, some of the other developers use windows and run other .NET items with Visual Studio. What does Mono not provide that Visual Studio does? If running this on Linux later shouldn't we use Mono Develop ? Is there some third party tools or addin's that might be an issue with Mono later?

I'm trying to adhere to the TDD concept as a training exercise, and as part of that exercise I'm writing documentation for the API as I develop the class. Case in point - I'm working on a classic "getCollection" type mapper class. I want it to be able to retrieve collections of asset X (let's say blog posts) for a specific user, and also collections based on an arbitrary array of numeric values. So - you might have a method like any one of these $User = $UserMapper->load(1); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection(range(10,20)); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection($User); $ArticleCollection = $ArticleMapper->getCollection($User->getId()); So, in writing the documentation for the getCollection method - I want to declare the @param variable in the Docblock. Is it better to have a unique method for each argument type, or is it acceptable to have a method that delegates to the correct internal method/class based on argument type?
