  My fried suggest I try to apply for a job at EMBL. I'm not bioinformatic in any way, but my friend (who by the way is a biologist working at EMBL) insists that I could adapt to the new environment as long as I have a interest in subject and am generally good at learning new things. But here is a catch. For the last 4 years I've been working with .Net and other Microsoft technologies which I enjoy even more lately. Now, from googling I couldn't find whether it will be possible for me to stick with .Net because it was all perl, java, linux and so on. Is there anybody who could prove whether there is at least minor opportunity for a .Net developer to at least partly develop with C#?

• Preventing decompilation of C# application

  Hi, We are planning to develop a client server application using C# and MySQL. We plan to sell the product on the shelf like any other software utility. We are worried about the decompilation of our product which does have some sort of edge over our competitors in terms of usability and bundled functionality. How can we prevent our software from decompilation, so the business logic of the product remains intact? We have heard about Reflector and other decompilers which makes our code very much vulnerable for copying. Our customer base is not Corporates by medical practitioners who themselves may not do it but our competitors may want to copy/disable licensing so value of our software goes down. • A strange issue... No code changes getting reflected.

  I am using netbeans to develop an applet, i have a piece of code which looked like this: ipAddresss = DEFAULT_IP; System.out.println("portlet.services.hostname:" + ipAddresss); Now I changed it to something like this: ipAddresss = DEFAULT_IP; System.out.println("portlet.services.hostname using default IP Address:" + ipAddresss); But no matter what I do, it sill keep on printing: portlet.services.hostname:null I have tried deleting all .netbeans folder from documents and settings, tried creating new project, but now i am completely baffled by this issue... So, the problem is, no matter what I do, no change is getting reflected when I run the program. Can there be a java applet cache, netbeans cache, i am not sure why...

  Hello all, I develop the part of app functionality. I have the databinding object 'A' and another object 'B'. public class SomeProxy { public SomeProxy(BindingSource A) { var b = new B(); } } public class B { public int SomePropertyFromA{get;set;} //Some autocalculated propeties, that are based on SomePropertyFromA //I want to reculculate them, when the SomePropertyFromA will be changed } 'B' object culculates some values, based on the property 'a' of the 'A' object. I want to bind property in object 'B' to the same property 'a' in 'A'. It's need to handle on changes of the 'a' property, because some UI controls are binded to 'B'-s properties. How can I do this? • Static assembly initialization

  I'm attempting to develop an Interceptor framework (in C#) where I can simply implement some interfaces, and through the use of some static initialization, register all my Interceptors with a common Dispatcher to be invoked at a later time. The problem lies in the fact that my Interceptor implementations are never actually referenced by my application so the static constructors never get called, and as a result, the Interceptors are never registered. If possible, I would like to keep all references to my Interceptor libraries out of my application, as this is my way of (hopefully) enforcing loose coupling across different modules. Hopefully this makes some sense. Let me know if there's anything I can clarify... Does anyone have any ideas, or perhaps a better way to go about implementing my Interceptor pattern? TIA, Jeremy

  What happened to Java and Sun? The community surrounding them had some of my favorite tools and software to develop with. The Java platform anyway, still looked like it had some promise to it: Groovy and Grails. Why does all of this seem to be going the way of the dodo lately? (Yes, I know their stock price is dropping badly.) Is it just the economy? Or did the lack of cohesion (i.e., not settling on a framework) among the community finally lead to its demise?

• Can I include both Apache Axis 1 and 2 libraries in the same project?

  If it sounds like a ridiculous idea then it is. The client only wants to have to install one project on their server. Our web service will be bridging between mobile phones and various SOAP services made in .NET, Apache Axis 1 and 2, which rely on standards to transfer files such as MTOM and DIME. I am looking for an 'architecture' trick, such as develop the Axis 1 calls in a separate project and compile as a jar, to then pass it into the Axis 2 project.... Hmmm. Anything rather than having to download the source code for Axis 1 & 2 and compile them using the same xml libraries, etc. "It can't be done" is an acceptable answer. Thanks!

  Hello, I developed a project using VB.Net and I used the following way to publish it: 1- Build - Build "my project" 2- Build - Publish "my project" then I follow the wizard and got the setup file at the end. But when I tried to install it I got an error telling me that my media files couldn't be found. ** I placed the media files in "Debug" folder inside "bin" folder. ** I'm using Microsoft Visual Basic 2008 Express Edition to develop this project. Is there any way to publish this project ?

• remove a varchar2 string from the middle of table data values

  Data in the file_name field of the generation table should be an assigned number, then _01, _02, or _03, etc. and then .ldf (example 82617_01.pdf). Somewhere, the program is putting a state name and sometimes a date/time stamp, between the assigned number and the 01, 02, etc. (82617_ALABAMA_01.pdf or 19998_MAINE_07-31-2010_11-05-59_AM.pdf or 5485325_OREGON_01.pdf for example). We would like to develop an SQL statement to find the bad file names and fix them. In theory it seems rather simple to find file_names that include a varchar2 data type and remove it, but putting the statement together is beyond me. Any help or suggestions apprecuiated. Something like ........... UPDATE GENERATION SET FILE_NAME (?) WHERE FILE_NAME (?...LIKE '%STRING%');?

  I have the following situation: A software hosted at github. 4 developers, each have her own fork in github. Each developer creates and develops using branches in her own fork. Given that we use branches to develop, we want to merge our branches (in our forks) to the upstream repo. How do I merge in github without using pull request? • Seam reRender component in partial; reRender across naming containers

  Hello, I'm using seam to develop a simple web app. Using a4j commandButton in many places, with the property reRender="componentName" componentName is in most places a a4j outputPanel Which always worked, until I used a template. with include of two different views. reRender applied to the whole view does work, but reRender applied to an inner component does not. Same issue with page rules, all action I had defined are not functioning any more. • Writing an AI for a turn-based board game

  Hi, i'm currently programming a board game (8x8) in which I need to develop an AI. I have read a lot of articles about AI in board games, minmax with or without alphabeta pruning, but I don't really know how to implements this, I don't know where to start... About my game, this is a turn-based game, each player has pieces on the board, they have to pick one and choose in moving this piece (1 or 2 cells max) or clone the piece (1 cell max). At the moment, I have a really stupid AI which choose a random piece then choose a random move to play... Could you please give me some clues, on how to implement this functionality ? Best regards

  I'm doing research and one point I want to cover is "What is the relationship between Domain-driven Design and Aspect oriented programming?" I know that a main principle in DDD is separation of concerns and I understand that. What I'm not really certain is, whether aspects in AOP acts like "sub domains" in our domain in DDD. Are these two concepts, basically the same thing. I mean, If I develop an application following AOP and DDD, at the end of the day will it be true that "a sub domain" == "an aspect". I will also appreciate any other opinions what is the common between AOP and DDD.

  hi, I develop a web application it is working fine in local. When i upload the site in online through CuteFTP it is showing the error like this... Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine. Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off". Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL. please help me i place the but even though it is not working it is giving same error. • from JS to iphone dev - what's the best language to start with?

  I am a total beginner and would like to eventually learn to develop for the iphone. I have just done a beginner's CS course where the language we learned was JavaScript. We studied basic concepts like: variables, arrays, loops (for,while,if,if..else..), properties and functions. I'm wondering if I am starting in the right/wrong place by following this book: Learn C on the Mac by Dave Mark? I have read a few chapters and am finding it a bit hard to get my head around the way that C works, for example the way that Strings are printed seems overly complicated as compared to JS. Do you think that JS was the wrong language to start off with and would I be better to go from JS straight to Objective-C rather than to C? I have tried to read up on previous threads on the merits/demerits of learning C first but haven't found any that relate JS to learning C/Obj C/ Cocoa. Any advice appreciated as I am very new to this. Thanks

• python packaging problem

  hi expert, I develop code in python to scan wifi and send to the server, it's working fine when executed manually, but i packaged it via http://www.python-packager.com by uploading my .py file and they create package for me as deb file for linux, and i download it and install the package but nothing happen when i click the .exe or set it as startup application. Why does this happen? Nothing is printed in the terminal. In .py file i'm having print statement to check manually to list out the wifi scan value, data to post to the server, response from the server once send. How this can be solved? thanks

• Is there any real advantage to use zend ce server over just referencing (include) the zend framework library?

  Hi, I'm new to PHP frameworks, and currently I'm trying Zend Framework (ZF). I'm old fashioned when it comes to installing software, I like to install apache/mysql/php all separetely since I find easier and it gives me more control of it. It seems that the "encouraged" way to develop with Zend Framework is using the Zend (CE) Server. I personally don't like this idea of a app install everything else (PHP/Apache and so on). From what I've seen if I include Zend Framework Library in php.ini path I'm ready to go. So is there any real advantage to use the Full Zend (CE) Server??

As I've searched for an answer, I find that none of the solutions people say have rid them of this error have worked for me. Here is a list of methods that did not work. -Cleaning: It just said it couldn't clean until I resolved the error. -Building the Project: It built it, but the error did not go away. -Deleting import R: The error did not go away. -Renaming import R to import me.package.R: The error persisted. • C++ corrupt my thinking, how to trust auto garbage collector?

  I use to program mainly with C/C++, that's make me dealing with pointers and memory management daily. This days I'm trying to develop using other tools, such as Java, Python and Ruby. The problem is that I keep thinking C++ style, I'm writing code as C++ usually written in almost every programming language, and the biggest problem is the memory management, I keep writing bad code using references in Java and just get as close as I can to the C++ style. So I need 2 thinks here, one is to trust the garbage collector, let's say by seeing benchmarks and proofs that it's realy working in Java, and know what I should never do in order to get my code the best way it can be. And the second think is knowing how to write other languages code. I mean I know what to do, I'm just never write the code as most Java or Python programmers usually do, are there any books for C++ programmers just to introduce me to the writing conventions? (by the way, forgive me for my English mistakes)

• The Scala way to use one actor per socket connection

  I am wondering how it is possible to avoid one socket connection pr. thread in Scala. I have thought a lot about it, but I always end up with some code which is listening for incoming data for each client connection. The problem is that I want to develop an application which should simultanously handle perhaps a couple of thousand connections. However I will of course not want to create a thread for each connection because of the lack of scalability and context switching. What would be the "right" way to do this. In my world it should be possible to have one actor for each connection without the need to block one thread per actor.

  When I used to develop in C++, I remember that Visual Studio had an entry in its Autos window whenever returning from a function call. This entry would tell me what value was returned from that function. One might argue that if a function returns a value, then you should set a variable to that value, i.e. int i = GetRandomInt(); But as a contrived example, suppose I wanted to do this: CycleTushKicker( GetRandomInt()); Instead of stepping into CycleTushKicker to figure out how many lickings my kid gets, I'd just like to know the value as soon as I exit GetRandomInt. Is there a way to get this when using C#?

• One code on dev server, and production server - how to deal with links?

  I have a copy of a code running ont he prod server, and I sue my local machine(s) running xampp as a dev server. I have several websites that I actively develop, so Im forced to use http://localhost/sitename All my URLs are relative to the domain, (/file.php). They work fine on the prod server, but on a local server, they all point to localhost, when I want to make them all work relative to the site folder they are in. Is there anything I could do, other than what I do now, which is this: if($_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] == "localhost") { $path_to = "http://" . $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] . "/folder"; $path_to_files = $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'] . • PHP: Iterate through folders and display HTML contends

  Hi, I’m currently trying to develop a method to get a overview of all my different web templates I’ve created and (legally) downloaded over the years. I thought about a displaying them like Wordpress is previewing it’s templates view a small preview windows, displaying the concrete file with styles and everything. How to divide them into rows and columns and create AJAX modal window open on preview and pagination and so on I believe I can manage, but it is the concept itself about iterate over several folders then find all index.htm / index.html pages and displaying them. I’ve not worked very much with directories in PHP and the only references and code stumps I’ve found so far is just to list all the files in a certain directory like, what it contains. I would be really grateful if someone knew about a script, a function, snippet or just could get me a nudge in the right direction to create such a (probably simple) preview function.
