• Learning Java Swing (GUI builder or not?)

  Well I know basic Java and wanted to learn Swing so of course looked at the Sun website first, where this tutorial is. I was going to start it but realised it relied heavily on NetBeans, which I'm not sure about. I'm not sure because it's learning that I want to acheive, not a nice looking program. So I thought using NetBeans like this would be great once I know it, but I don't want to be building things without a clue what's going on underneath, and of course this could also cause problems later. My first question is is this the right way to do it, should I try not to rely on an IDE heavily? Looking through questions on the site most people recommend using the Sun tutorial, and I've only seen one answer that agrees with what I'm thinking, and they linked to this resource which looks promising. Or perhaps I'm getting the wrong idea of the Sun tutorial, perhaps it doesn't rely on the IDE, it just seemed like that. My second question is, if you agree with me, what resources (apart from the one above) would you recommend? Thanks for your answers.

With this code the right border of the button is around 20-30 pixel outside the form window. Why is that? • HTML Slider element?

  I'm coding an app (temporarily up here), and I want to make its parameters modifiable. I feel the best way to do this would be with your standard GUI slider elements (a la this, but not so ugly). I just noticed that the DOM doesn't provide these, however... What's the best way to introduce sliders to a webpage? Is there a standard library that everybody uses? Should I just roll my own? Or should is there a different element I can use? Should I embed them in the canvas element somehow?

I know the industry's standard language is C++, for 3D graphics the main choice is between Direct 3D and OpenGL, but what is the most widely used GUI framework? I'm currently on a Mac so if native Windows API is the answer, then what is the cross platform choice? • How to develop a DirectFB app without leaving X.11 environment.

  Hi folks, I'm trying to develop a GUI application for an embedded platform, without any windowing whatsoever and I'm doing that with DirectFB, and it suits my needs very fine. Since the embedded I develop for is not that powerful, I would really like to try to develop on my own Ubuntu desktop. The problem is Framebuffer is conflicting with X.org causing me to leave the whole desktop, and shutdown X.org just to see the result of my changes. Is there a good framebuffer simulator that suits my needs? Qt has one, called QVFb, but it only works for developing Qt apps, and the VNC back-end of DirectFB always crash. So, any ideas?

I have working program made with C and SDL just to load pictures and make a slideshow, but i don´t know how to put this over video with transparencies. I read http://doc.trolltech.com/4.5/designer-using-a-ui-file.html to use these GUI elements in my code and using multiple inheritance approach. I am introducing bookmark feature which somewhat look like http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3041/screenshotyb.png. Now the problem I am facing is How can I show all existing bookmark folders in the drop down(say folders are in a QVector). So my main problem is how can I pass some inputs to the UI element.   I have a GUI which resembles an interpreter. It allows the user to write a script in Jython (implementation of Python in Java) and run it whenever he wants. Apart from that, I also wish to allow the user to instantly terminate the run whenever he wants. Thing is, I don't really know how to do it. The script is being run on a different Thread, but I don't know of any secure way to stop/interrupt/terminate a thread in the middle of its run, let alone not knowing what is being run by the thread/script (it could be a simple task or maybe some sort of a heavy SQL query against a DB, and a DB is something which requires careful resource handling). How can I instantly terminate such run on demand?

  Can you cast an object to one that implements an interface? Right now, I'm building a GUI, and I don't want to rewrite the Confirm/Cancel code (A confirmation pop-up) over and over again. So, what I'm trying to do is write a class that gets passed the class it's used in and tells the class whether or not the user pressed Confirm or Cancel. The class always implements a certain interface.   i received a big book full of processes. i was thinking about the end user (they will be lawyers) and decided the best GUI would be showing activity diagrams or business processes. It reminded me Quickbooks and how non-accountants can successfully use it and understand accounting processes. i began doing research before sending my project to a bunch of programmers: is there some open source solution? can i use MS Visio libraries? which UML tool is programable? what about Eclipse and its modeling tools? etc etc the key points here are: relationships between events, artifacts, actors, etc should be stored in a database. processes or steps in a process should be easily modified by updating the database do this sounds too crazy? (should I explain a bit more why it must be programmed this way?)

• Clean way to display/hide a bunch of buttons based on a ComboBox selection

  I'm writing a standalone application in VB.NET using Visual Studio 2005. I want to display/hide a bunch of Buttons based on the selected value of a ComboBox. Each selection would have a different set of Buttons to display, and I'd like to have them arranged in a nice grid. Driving a TabControl with the ComboBox value would be the kind of behavior I want, but I don't want it to look like a TabControl to the user because it might be confusing. Is there a way to do this? Basically, I'd like Selection1 of the ComboBox to show Buttons 1-4, Selection2 to show Buttons 5-11, Selection3 to show (maybe) Buttons 1, 3, 5, 6, and 8, etc., have them arranged nicely, and have the GUI show only the ComboBox and the buttons. • Are Java GUIs always slow to update or is it just me?

  I've just started making my first GUI application in Java and I decided to use the NetBeans IDE to do it. I think its working fine so far, except for one problem; it seems to be slow updating the content of a window. Even in very simple windows with few controls I find that when - for example - closing or resizing a window, I get the normal window border working properly but the inside is completely see through for a second. It's not the biggest deal in the world, I just find it mildly annoying.

• why message box is always hidden behind main dialog and cannot be shown on the top

  I am using MFC to write a GUI application. I chose dialog-based application, and put picture control, edit box and buttons on it. When the picture control is mapped to the class derived from CWnd using DDX_Control, all the message boxes (including default system message box pop up when you enter invalid input in the edit box) are hidden behind main dialog until you use "alt + tab" to bring them to front. If I map the picture control to the default CStatic class, the above problem disappeared. Do anyone has some hints to solve this problem? Thank you in advance for any help.

  Is VCL dead, or does it have a future as a GUI library? As CLX ended, is there any chance for cross-platform support in future releases? I've had to do some work with legacy app that uses Borland's VCL(BCB6). Now that new features have to be implemented, it's necessary to revalue alternatives. Whether to stick with VCL or migrate to some other library/framework. I've never read much what's happening in the field Embarcadero(Borland) tools. At least there seems to be only few VCL tagged questions here in SO and no much luck with google either.

• Python Game using pyGame with Window Menu elements

  Here's the deal. I'm trying to write an arkanoid clone game and the thing is that I need a window menu like you get in pyGTK. For example File-(Open/Save/Exit) .. something like that and opening an "about" context where the author should be written. I'm already using pyGame for writting the game logic. I've tried pgu to write the GUI but that doesn't help me, altough it has those menu elements I'm taking about, you can't include the screen of the game in it's container. Does anybody know how to include such window menus with the usage of pyGame ?

• Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

  Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?
